Less than two weeks later, the blower motor burned out. I spoke with the repairman to ask again if I should replace. Etoom the time to show me the internal parts and that they were in great shape. He again said that despite the bad luck and timing he would not recommend replacement. E&W had two chances to sell a new unit but recommended that this unit had plenty of life (the original unit was one the most efficient models available at the time). The repair was of nominal cost. I believe they really wanted todo the right thing and make sure their customers are treated right. I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Had them inspect an almost 20 yr old furnace/AC as part of a home purchase. I could have easily been convinced to replace unit but they recommended against saying everything looked good.

To those people with hot water heating, I highly recommend these guys. They're price is very reasonable, if they weren't I wouldn't have called. They're very courteous, helpful and explained what I needed to replace the filters. They fixed my furnace here too.
Description of Work: They came last summer when the air conditioner went out, and way before that, I had a hot water heating system, and they're the first ones who actually knew what they're talking about and they fixed what was wrong with it, with very little money. I mean it was just a little thing that was wrong, the other people I had that looked at it missed it, they didn't know.

It wasn't cheap but it was the newer technology. They came out, explained everything to us, we asked questions and they were willing to answer until we finally understood how the system works. It was really pretty complicated but we felt that they were very honest and got the job done. They come back every year and service the boiler. I would recommend them to everybody.

I have used Eand W for routine maintenance for over 20 years in my current home. They always responded to my calls to set up routine maintenance or needed repair promptly. They always arrived when scheduled and were always professional, knowledgeable and friendly. There was never any pressure from the staff to replace my relic. However, I felt it was time to do so. Ultimately I decided to hire Eand W without getting other bids even though other reviews indicated that their price would be higher. When Greg arrived to inspect and review my home to be able to give me a price quote I also asked him about possibly installing ductless air conditioning. I signed the contract for both and they were able to start the following week. The entire project was completed in five working days. During the removal of the old boiler and the installation of the new one and the ductless AC units the technicians were the most professional persons I have ever dealt with. They were knowledgeable and patiently answered my many questions. They went about the installation efficiently and quietly. At the end of the day everything was left neatly and any mess was cleaned up. All of the old boiler and attachments were removed without any damage to any area of my home.
Description of Work: Installed a boiler replacement (hot water heat with baseboard heaters) and ductless air conditioning units. The original boiler was 45 years old and still worked OK. I decided not to risk another winter with the old boiler. I am not able to install central air conditioning because my home has no duct work.

Eand W has a reputation for being among the best for installing radiant heat systems. They are extremely knowledgable and friendly in initial interviews. Their bid for installing a complete system in a new house was high, but not unexpected. I am willing to pay for quality if a company instills confidence and is responsive. Their response time was a bit slow (they explained they were temporarily understaffed) and when I asked for a breakdown of time and materials, they provided basic information. I asked some pointed questions about prices and asked about the potential for tax credits if also installing solar thermal water heating. I never heard back from them. My feeling is that if I'm going to pay $35,000 on a complete system, a contractor should make time to answer my questions in full, justify their expenses and offer me alternatives (like solar add-ons that would not only give them more work but provide me with a sizable tax creditand mdash;a win-win situation). I eventually found a company that did just that. While I still believe Eand W is extremely competent and may even warrant a higher fee, ultimately I was left feeling like they were too busy and couldn't be bothered with trying to win my business. Which they didn't.

Excellent proposal and written information and extensive examination of my needs and options.
Description of Work: I was getting estimates for a new furnace and air conditioning unit as mine was over 20 years old. The person that came out to give me the estimate spent more time with me than all four other companies and explained what would need to be done and what type of systems would be the best for me. He examined my house carefully as some room additions had been done and the AC might need to be moved. I was very impressed with his knowledge and his ability to explain the details of my replacement needs. He didn't just tell me what I needed but explained the positives and negatives of my options. I felt his company would do quality work and install quality Trane equipment. I went with another company because of their top rated air cleaner and I hope I am not sorry.

The initial installation went smoothly. However when an inspector was here looking at other work he brought up that an HVAC permit had not been pulled. A permit was part of the estimate and cost from Eand W. Eand W had to return to complete additional work to comply with the code and the issue lead to a delay in the ceiling phase of the remodeling project.

Was professional from bidding through installation. Explained options clearly. Bid was pretty similar to other bids I got for comparable system. Installation was completed in one day and everything from the old system was cleaned up before I got home from work. They clearly explained how the system worked, how to increase energy efficiency, and what I needed to do for maintenance. They had to come back once to adjust one of the heating zones and once to replace a part that was causing a clicking noise in the system. They were very responsive to calls regarding these two minor problems and came the same day I called.
Description of Work: Replaced original hot water furnace (from 1950s) with much smaller, high efficiency furnace. Created three heating zones in home (old system had two zones) and installed three new electronic heat controls, one for each zone.

Recently the boiler, which is only 14 years old, got a crack in it and thus needed replacement. The staff were pleasant enough, but I had a few concerns: I was told that they had a lot of problems with the brand (Burnham), and so no longer carried it. I then called several other Hand C places who reported that Burnham is a very reliable brand. They were somewhat slow about getting the estimate to me--said that they have a family business and had a death in the family, so this seemed reasonable, and I wasn't in an emergency situation. Still, a little odd. Their estimate was over $2000 more that the next (in part because they wanted to install a different brand that needed different pipes). When another company was doing the installation, they noted that the water feed was from a cold water source not connected to the water softener. I'm not knowledgeable in these things, but it seems that the boiler may have cracked due to hard water deposits and/or temp. shock when filling. ($8,200)
Description of Work: This company installed the boiler in my house when the previous owner was there. They have also done yearly maintenance and seemed reasonable, although I received some slightly contradictory advice about how/when to flush the boiler by different workers over the last 4 years.

I couldn't tell if the guy really knew what he was talking about or if he was feeding me lines. He talked really fast and tended to play up the "family company, service over selling quantity, won't be the cheapest bid but would give the straight scoop" line. He talked a mile a minute. Talked about personal issues (dental work-root canal recently). Trashed our AC before taking a look at it; once he saw it, he said that it was a good model, but then went into a "hmmmm, well, I was encouraged until I saw the connections to the furnace; they don't make kit parts for that type of connection anymore, and if anything goes wrong with the connection, it's time for a new AC unit" mode. He got lost coming here, called the house for directions but then had a hard time finding the house, drove right by while I was in the front yard flagging him down. Didn't inspire huge amounts of confidence; I don't know if that was because of the fast talking, but it was a bit creepy. (1-last-of 6 total bids).
Description of Work: Installation of Trane XV90 High Efficiency Gas Furnace and Trane XR13 AC system. 20% due upon acceptance of bid. Although he said the actual AC unit was ok, he said that we need an interface, an "A Coil" interface with the furnace and the heat pump. He said the current furnace doesn't have one, and the new unit can have one installed for c. $900-$1000. (It did have one). We would receive our bid by e-mail in the next week to ten days, as there are only 9 in the company and they are working, doing sales, and the office work. (Actually received it in 8 days). This company was recommended by a dear friend that used them for alternative energy installation projects; sounds as though they don't do exclusively furnace installations. I was deeply disappointed, as we received a glowing recommendation. Talked about how the company would offer the rebate but would expect his dealership to contribute part of the money, resulting in a lower commission on his end (wierd!)

Overall service went very well. We were not getting any heat from our furnace and this was during some very cold days in October. When a service person came to our home he diagnosed a failed pressure switch which was most likely due to heavy rains. Service person had to leave and return another day with parts that needed to be ordered. Friendly, professional service.
