The design and the build of the room did not meet code. When final inspection occurred the sunroom failed and Bear was in able to keep the sunroom open to the house as promised. Also when permit was pulled they did mot disclose to the inspector that the wall was open which it was with the previous room. We add to go through arbitration a year of stress and we won but it was 33 cents on the dollar we recovered. We now have the stress of looking for a new contractor to fix what they couldn't. Don't pay Bear until your room is finished so you don't end up loosing thousands of dollars. Learn from my trusting faith in a NARI certified contractor. Most are good and I've had good experiences until Bear

It was perfect. It was top-notch all the way. The way they presented their product to us was one of the reasons we chose them. Their presentation was extremely convincing. They actually showed us the product first-hand. The fact they brought to us was very important to us. Their crew that came to work was absolutely amazing. They were professional, courteous, reliable, and dependable. I have nothing but the utmost respect for them.

Originally paid for room in fall of 2012. Main construction from Spring 2013-Winter 2013 Door and windows wouldn?t close/lock, room leaks. Bear would not return my emails or phone calls. When I finally would reach them they would say things like ?just needs a little more caulk?. They even absurdly had someone come out and put black foam pipe insulation around the roof saying this was a fix for leaks! Continued complaints and trying to get them to fix things through Spring of 2014. I finally gave up and continued to work only with manufacturer and a new company. Manufacturer and new company completely re-did frame, windows, and roof. All was constructed incorrectly. I still have wrong door on which doesn?t match my room. Someone else in the area must also have the wrong door. Also hired another contractor to fix numerous foundation issues of which I am still working with the manufacturer, new company, and additional contractors to rectify. Why has it taken me so long to write this? The experience has made me sick. Bear was so demeaning and insulting that I just couldn?t ?bear? to put myself in the situation of working with them any longer. I finally am writing this in that I can?t live with myself if I don?t do something to warn others of this snake-oil salesman whose company is a nightmare.

Response from Bear Builders LLC
[Member name removed] chose a sunroom manufactured by Living Spaces with the understanding that it was a brand new product. We did what every responsible builder does with a new product: we insisted upon the manufacturer’s intense involvement. I secured a promise from Living Spaces that they would be on-site for a hands-on installation and would completely oversee the first few jobs we would perform with their product. The Living Spaces representative pre-measured the room before material was ordered, was on-site for the majority of the installation, and was available by phone when he was not present. Every problem that was brought to our attention we fielded with Living Spaces, as was appropriate in this situation. Any and all installation issues occurred under the direction of the Living Spaces representative. Contrary to [Member name removed] assertions, we went out multiple times and followed Living Spaces’ exact instruction, including the "absurd" black foam pipe insulation. The customers understood that this was a new product. They were confident, same as Bear, that the manufacturer’s presence and installation guidance would result in a high quality sunroom and a positive installation experience. When issues arose, [Member name removed] was kind and patient, while [Member name removed] (understandably) became upset and demanding, using much of the extreme language seen in this complaint. As a result, we received mixed messages. Bear Sunrooms takes pride in providing extraordinary service. Living Spaces let us down. They said they were making corrections in their manufacturing as a result of negative feedback from this and other jobs. Despite this, they assured us that they would stand behind their product. As a result, I became “gun shy” of Living Spaces because it felt like I was presenting a product prematurely that was far from perfected. It was as though Bear Sunrooms and [Member name removed] were a “guinea pig” for the manufacturer. This fact is supported by all the product changes they have since made. Because I was having serious doubts about Living Spaces, I decided not to carry their product until all of the problems were fixed. After that, Living Spaces struck back at us by ceasing all support with us and finding another contractor to take over the area. All support was terminated, and they wanted everything to go through their new contractor. [Member name removed] said that “all was constructed incorrectly.” Again, every step of this project was done according to the manufacturer’s direction, and then we were, essentially, locked out. It appears the manufacturer has its current appointed contractor working to resolve their issues. Living Spaces has not informed me of any of this; however, I’m happy to hear they're standing behind their product. They should. Since the material was manufactured by them and the entire installation was done with their hands-on instruction, it is fitting and appropriate that Living Spaces and their current contractor resolve the problems, particularly since they ceased all communication with us. [Member name removed] insults are hurtful and categorically inaccurate. I am deeply saddened that the homeowners have had to endure these problems. They didn't deserve it. [Member name removed] anger, however, is misdirected. We've constructed hundreds of sunrooms and have never walked away from a problem. If we conducted ourselves in the fashion that she describes, we surely would no longer be in business or have the many positive testimonials on our website. Any complaint has always been settled to the customer’s satisfaction. This project was taken out of our hands. We had no knowledge of, and are not responsible for, work that other contractors do. Living Spaces made the decision not to give us the “right to cure.” They directed this project from the beginning and continue to do so. I believe [Member name removed] is aware of this information, because Living Spaces has since informed me that she has threatened suit against them.

They are mostly interested in money. They did things we asked them not do and didn't do other things we wanted done. We are having insulation problems now that we will need to pay to adjust. They were very difficult to get a hold of and weren't happy about coming to service issues they caused.

We were quite impressed with the product, but more importantly with the vendor himself. Scott reviewed our site and concluded that his product would meet our desire to convert a three season room to a comfortable four season. However he could not with a clear conscious recommend his product in this case. He felt it would a poor choice from an architectural perspective and referred us to another vendor who could work with the existing structure and preserving architectural harmony. Those high ethical standards. are hard to find. Thanks again for your help and we certainly will recommend you!

We thought for quite some time about adding a sunroom addition to our house. I had researched options and had a picture in my head of what I wanted our sunroom to look like. When we made the decision to move it from vision to reality, we began the builder selection process and chose Bear Builders after our first meeting with Scott Bear in March. Scott met us at our house and I described my vision. Scott listened to me carefully and offered suggestions based on his expertise, and so began our journey. Much to our surprise, our sunroom turned out even better than I envisioned, thanks to Scott and his skilled team of professionals. It took a few revisions to complete the design stage of the project, and the construction process began in May which was consistent with the timeline promised when we signed the contract in March. The project went smoothly overall. We were very lucky and had great weather during the build (the local drought came at a good time as far as our construction schedule was concerned). There were a couple unforeseen issues that were addressed quickly but caused only brief delay. The overall project took a bit longer than we anticipated (projected completion date was July 1), but that wasn't entirely Bear Builders? fault, as there were selections that we needed to make which took some time on our part. Regarding that process, I?d like to offer a couple suggestions to improve and possibly speed up the construction process. It wasn?t clear to us when we needed to make our selections for things such as finish flooring and house wall options (those components aren?t included in the base sunroom package and can be contracted separately). It would be helpful for Bear Builders to provide instructions or guidance regarding selection options at the beginning of the construction process, and indicate specifically when a client's selections will affect the construction schedule. In addition, there were different contact persons responsible for different components of the construction process, and it was sometimes confusing to know with whom we should be discussing specific issues (e.g., something in need of correction prior to the next phase of construction, or who was responsible for selection discussions). Overall, our experience was extremely positive and the final result is a beautiful sunroom that exceeds our expectations. We have had no major problems with our sunroom, and Bear Builders was responsive to our request to fix some small issues when the sunroom was completed (the ?punch list? items). There was one water leak identified during the construction phase which was quickly addressed. We have had no water issues since that time. We would not hesitate to choose Bear Builders if we were to build another sunroom, and would recommend Bear Builders to anyone contemplating an addition. We love our oasis and use it every day. We?d be happy to show off our room to anyone who wanted to see it.

In the process of selling my house, a house inspection revealed some work needed to be done on my chimney flashing. Scott Bear had been the contractor for the roof work in 2004, although he now specializes in sunrooms. I called his number and left a message about the inspection findings. He returned my call promptly and said "We'll take care of it." That evening, he sent a worker by to look at the chimney, and the next day a work crew of two returned to repair the flashing. In addition, they noticed some caulking that needed to be done on another roof vent, which the house inspection had not mentioned. They took care of this as well. The work was completed at no charge to me. It was a pleasure to find someone is still in business almost eight years later, and a double pleasure to see how well they stand by their work. I wouldn't hesitate to use him again for any work needing to be done.
Description of Work: Scott Bear arranged for some warranty work to be done on my chimney flashing and another roof vent.

We were excited about the project and put the money down in the spring and were told that the target date for the construction was August. In May we were called by Scott Bear the owner and he said that his prices were going up and that if we gave him some more money he would order our sunroom and get us earlier in the schedule. Well, we gave him the money but did not get the sunroom built until a couple of weeks after the original promise date. The build did go quickly when it finally started and we got $300 back as a refund for the late start. We had a leak in the roof line next to the house and it took some time, but they got out to us and fixed it. But it took two trips to stop the leaks finally. The room is lovely now that it's finished, but the aggravation during the build was not fun.
Description of Work: We had sunroom installed on the back of our house. This included everything except removal of the old sunroom which I did myself and carpet installation.
