Good for a small project, absolutely not qualified to manage a large project with multiple contractors. My major kitchen remodel (over $100k) was quoted to take 4-6 weeks and took SIX MONTHS. Luckily my boyfriend was home for a lot of the remodel because there was no project management and contractors would come over and ask him what they had to do as they had no direction, no oversight. They made very elementary errors that caused numerous project delays - cabinet shelves too long because they didn’t account for the cabinet lighting or spice racks, cabinet door dropped and had to be completely remade, electric outlets not recessed after backsplash installed, toe kicks not nailed down, texture overspray all over window, can lights not flush with ceiling, contractors unaware of lock boxes when they arrive, just a mess. I called and emailed, trying to reach the owner, who never returned one call or email. You’d think with a large expensive remodel the owner would reach out when this much goes wrong. This company went from drywall only to now trying to handle major remodels and they are in way over their heads. I only gave this 2 stars because the end result is “good”.

Dear [Member Name Removed], Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us at JB Custom. We are truly sorry that your kitchen remodel did not meet the high standards we strive to uphold. Your honest feedback is crucial in helping us identify and address our areas of improvement. We acknowledge that our expansion into larger-scale projects as a General Contractor has been challenging, particularly in establishing a reliable pool of subcontractors. We accept full responsibility for the oversight and communication lapses that occurred during your project. Despite these challenges, we are relieved to hear that you were satisfied with the final result of your remodel. It was imperative for us to ensure the completion of your kitchen to your liking, and we are glad to have achieved that goal, albeit with difficulties along the [Member Information Removed]. We are very pleased with the painting done by Aldo and Jose. They were polite, professional and completed the job in one day. We were pleasantly surprised that our dining room, kitchen, foyer and hallway were completed by 4:30 on day one.

Before I critique what didn't go well on the project, I'd first like to mention that the crew working at my house were kind, professional and did a great job of prep and clean up! However, there were certainly some disappointments and shortcomings which I experienced that I'd caution other potential customers. The project appeared to take much longer than anticipated due to a number of revisits for rework. On the first day, the fast drying mud/plaster wasn't drying in a timely manner as expected. I was told that it was unusual and they would need to come back another day as turning up the heat and blasting fans wouldn't expedite the process enough to continue that day. By that evening, in every room, the product developed air bubbles that were quite large (pictures 1 & 2). I don't know if this was due to a poor mix or application, but it certainly added time to rework on day 2 of the project. As day 2 of the project continued, I was sequestered to my office as there was work needed to be done in the hallway directly outside my door. By the time the crew notified me that I was able to come out, everything was completed including the tear down and clean up and the crew was out the door. There was no final walk through or discussion of the job. Sadly, as I inspected the work, I noticed that on one wall, the mud had been sprayed, but NOT knocked down to match the texture as had been done in all other areas (picture 3). If the crew or even the project manager assigned (who aside from showing up on day 1 during the prep time and then never seen again) had taken a few minutes to perform a final walk through, this may have been caught proactively. As it turned out, it required a third day of work to sand down and respray the mud to then knock it down. At the end of this effort, I was satisfied despite a bit of over spray that wasn't knocked down in certain areas as I knew once it was painted it would be decently disguised. Where my experience with JB Custom really becomes disappointing is in my follow up interactions. I requested a second quote to perform more of the same work as as we discovered the need during the first project. This effort was probably 20% (or less) of the effort of the first job, but the estimate came in at MORE than double the first job. Needless to say, I was a little shell shocked by the price. When I inquired about the disparity in price, I was told that the first job was under quoted and they spent far too many hours on the first project. The estimator went on to say that the first project should have likely been quoted at the price of the new project. I then asked for clarification as if that was the case, why would the second job be the same price for a fifth of the work. While I would not expect to pay a fifth of the price due to overhead and standard prep activities, perhaps half? The only response the estimator was able to give was "At the end of the day we are a business and we need to make money, ya know?". At that point, I realized that there wasn't much value in attempting work with the estimator or continue the dialogue. In this scenario, it feels as I the customer is being punished for the additional time booked to the project which perhaps could have been avoided with improved craftsmanship and less or no rework along with more proactive project management. The frustrating part of this scenario is that I acted in good faith and didn't complain about cracks in the knockdown texture that are literally a few inches from a big patch (~2.5ft x 4ft) that the crew addressed. I assumed that since we'd be doing business again in the near future, we'd catch it on the second go around. I also pointed these items out to the estimator for the second job and even inquired on the phone while discussing the second estimate, but never received an answer about that work that wasn't performed (pictures 4, 5, 6). Now I'm left to find a different company to perform the new work, but also address the items left by JB Custom.
Description of Work: I recently contracted with JB Custom to repair sections of my walls and ceiling where the knockdown texture had cracked and was peeling from the surfaces.

[Member Name Removed], I'm very sorry to hear there were issues on this job and you were not happy with how it turned out. It looks like the original job was under quoted on the original estimate, which would account for the shock of the price for the second job. We realize price is a huge factor to our customers as well as quality. We always strive to deliver on quality, so we'd definitely want to make that right in every aspect. Sometimes issues pop up with the material or a crew member not seeing the issues you are pointing out and a final walk through could have solved that and is usually our practice, so we take total responsibility for that not being done. If you decide to have the second project done with us, we can combine fixing the issues with any new work or just come and fix the issues in your photos. Ultimately we want you to be happy you called us, and trusted us with your home, so please contact our office if you'd like to get this scheduled.

1st day they sent out a crew that normally did not hang drywall, and the quality showed. Crew left at 3:00 and left a partially-screwed sheet on the wall...didn't want to finish it for the day. 2nd day of drywall hanging was better with an experienced crew. They fixed some day 1 issues. Mudding and taping went ok...did a decent job but finish around a couple light switches was wavy, thankfully will be covered with back splash tile. And there was a 2" by 3" hole in the drywall behind the toilet, which they probably assumed would be covered by trim, which it wasn't - I had to fix myself as I wasn't going to take off more work to wait form them to show up. Seems like all the crews were in a hurry just to get the work done, but didn't take the care to double check quality before moving on to the next step. Owner did stop by a couple times during the project upon request, and try to rectify the situation, but the lack of communication at the start of the project and the problems along the way left an underwhelming feeling.

I am sorry that our price came across as excessive. We try to be as fair as we can and we follow a formula to come up with all quotes. Our paint estimator put together an estimate based on the time and material he felt the job would take. This particular painting estimate included painting walls and ceilings, shelving, windows, and two fuel tanks that needed to be cleaned/painted.

It went great. From our initial call to their office, to the walk-through and quoting process, to the finished product everyone at JB was great to work with. Every question was answered in a timely manner pre, during, and post production. The crew was punctual, and both the owner and crew accommodated our personal schedule to have the job completed ahead of schedule. It helped that we had a pretty clear idea on what we wanted the final texture to look like.

Excellent work in all areas. Did everything I requested and did it well (and I am very picky). Jon was there whenever needed, and crews were responsible and responsive. On one area, I wasn't initially happy with the texturing done and I asked him to take a look at it. He did and said it wasn't right and had it redone without me saying more, at the same time teaching the applicator how to do it properly. Very reasonable prices as well. Highly recommended.

While JB doesn't have a carpenter on staff, they brought in an excellent one as a subcontractor to do the carpentry work. All of the work was done on time, as promised, with a minimum of dust. Their advertised dust containment procedure worked very well. JB finished all the lower-level work quickly and efficiently. The texture crew came once the walls had been taped, pasted and sanded. They applied the texture coat on all four walls to have them blend and look uniform. We were ready to paint a couple days later. The china cabinet work also was handled in a professional, timely way. The carpenter returned a few days later to install new shelves. We're very satisfied with both the drywalling and the carpentry work, and would hire JB again.
Description of Work: We needed to have old barn board removed from a studio area on the lower level, and replaced with drywall. One other walls in the studio also needed drywall, plus construction of a closet space under the basement stairs. In addition, we needed to have beadboard replaced with drywall in a built-in china cabinet upstairs. All the drywall was installed quickly, cleanly and efficiently. The studio space walls were finished with a textured "orange peel" look.

They weren't the most expensive or the cheapest but the quickest to bid the job and most responsive to any questions and clarifications. Really liked that priming the new drywall was included in the bid, all others bid as a separate line item cost. Different crews rotated in, out and sometimes overlapped to haul, hang, tape, mud, sand, prime and clean up - very efficient, done in a week. Very happy with the finished drywall, they did a nice job, including the clean up.

Jon quoted this job as a 1-2 week job but it took 4 weeks and is still not completed. Payment was requested without resolution of a punch list. Many dings, blemishes, and "over spray" of sprayed texture persist. One ding in the hallway wallboard was pointed out to Jon, Bill and at least 3 other people. Never was resolved. All I ever got was lip service and no follow through. Poor supervision of employees. Employees were going through the motions and lacked detail orientation. I lost complete confidence in management, as one owner said one thing and another owner said something else. Woodwork was to be "oiled" per Bill, but was never done. Employees came unprepared to work and did not have proper equipment. They had to borrow my vacuum cleaner and a ladder. Employees were asking me what they should be doing when they came to the house. Wood floors and carpets were not adequately protected. Employees were walking on my wood floor with wet boots on a rainy day. When I came home to see this, I pointed out that water on wood floors can do damage, they looked at me like I was from outer space. They did wipe up the water and lay down brown paper but only after I insisted. Truly an unprofessional job. I heard nothing but excuses from management. All of the issues that your company had (supervisor on vacation, other big jobs being done, lack of enough equipment, poor subs used, etc.) became my problem. Why did I pay almost $9,000 for a job that was, and still is, riddled with issues and problems. I try to give jobs to small, local businesses to support them in their growth and endeavors. Never again. I will now use only big companies that have a good reputation. I strongly advise that your management team sits down and discusses what and why things went so wrong. Company needs to get it's act together and show some responsibility, respect and professionalism
