WE CONTRACTED WITH DOUG TO DO A TOTAL BATHROOM REMODEL, INCLUDING AN ACRYLIC BATHTUB LINER. $2,198 WAS A DOWN PAYMENT OF APPROXIMATELY HALF THE WHOLE JOB. I FIRED HIM AFTER SEEING THE WORK HE DID IN THE SHOWER SURROUND OVER THE TUB. HE HAD SAID HE HAD WORKED WITH NATURAL STONE BEFORE, BUT I DOUBT THAT. AMONG THE MISTAKES HE DID, ARE USING TILE NIPPERS TO CUT STRAIGHT EDGES, NOT LEVELING OUT THE STUDS, C.BOARD OR THINSET, TILES HAD TO BE RECUT ($10 A TILE). HE USED A SHALLOWER TOOTH DEPTH ON HIS TROWEL THAN THE THINSET MANUFACTURER REQUIREMENT FOR 12" TILES. THE INSIDE EDGE CLOSEST TO THE PLUMBING WAS TAPED OVER THE BACKER BOARD BUT NOT COVERED WITH SPECIAL MORTER TO WATERPROOF THE JOINT. I INSISTED HE USE A VAPOR BARRIER, THOUGH I DOUBT IT IS DONE RIGHT, BECAUSE HE'S NEVER INSTALLED ONE. NONE OF THE TILES ARE FLUSH AND THE CORNERS ARE VERY UNEVEN, DID NOT EVEN USE TILE SPACERS IN CORNERS. HE LEFT THICK SMEARS OF GROUT (NOT JUST A HAZE!)ON THE TILES AND SAID IT WAS CLEAN. I CLEANED IT.
Description of Work: DOUG MEASURED AND ORDERED A CUSTOM ACRYLIC BATHTUB LINER (THE WRONG ONE), AND DEMOLISHED TWO LAYERS OF TILE IN A BATHTUB SURROUND AREA, AND VERY POORLY INSTALLED 12" LIMESTONE TILES IN THE AREA.

Mr. Right is very prompt. He worked quickly, did the job well. He gave me a list of do's and don't's after completing the work. The bathtub looked very nice after he finished, although we couldn't shower for 48 hours after the job was finished. One problem: his instructions said to not use a tub mat with suction cups, and I've not been able to find one (the suction cups, however, do not seem to cause damage). Another problem is that you need to use cleaning sprays instead of a powder cleanser. I haven't found a spray that's as effective as powder. Also, since Mr. Right didn't protect all the tile in the bathroom with paper, there some white spray did get on some black tile. It was very light, though, and maybe he didn't notice it. Mr. Right is responsive and professional, but I wonder if there are better products out there. $25 of the total price was for returning another day to "regrout."
Description of Work: Refinished bathtub. Mr. Right removed hardware, sanded down tub, covered areas of bathroom with paper before spraying, and sprayed bathtub with polyurethane enamel. He came back another day to put on sealer around tub (sealer isn't the word - I can't remember what you call that stuff).

The workman was on time, very polite, and the price was reasonable. However, I was left with a thin film of white, from the spray, all over my bathroom. I'm still cleaning two weeks later.
Description of Work: Sprayed bathtub with a refinishing substance to cover flaws.

We asked if we needed to do anything to prepare the bathroom for the work. We also asked if we should remove a faucet before he started the work. He came in, taped off most of everything but didn't do a good enough job. He sprayed all over everything and ruined two pairs of my wife's glasses and countless other bathroom supplies. When he came back to touch everything up, I don't think he taped up anything except for the new faucet. He left over spray on pedestal sink, toilet, and our radiator. He was also 45 minutes late the first time he showed up. Even we saw drips in the finish, he tried to say it was water.
Description of Work: He was going to refinish our claw foot tub.

Response from A-1 REFINISHERS
I WAS CONTACTED BY THE MEMBER THE 1ST TIME FOR A QUOTE, AND THE 2ND TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. SHE ASKED WHAT DID SHE NEED TO DO. I TOLD HER TO MAKE SURE ALL THEIR PERSONAL ITEMS WERE OUT THE BATHROOM, SHE SAID IT WOULD BE DONE. 1ST VISIT: WHEN I ARRIVED I STILL HAD TO WAIT UNTIL THE THEY REMOVED THEIR ITEMS. SHORTLY AFTER I ARRIVED SHE LEFT, HE WATCHED ME MASK OFF THE BATHROOM & PREP THE TUB FOR AN HOUR AND A HALF, I EVEN ASKED HIM TO REMOVE A WOODEN BOX HANGING ON THE WALL, HE ASKED ME TO MASK IT. WE ALSO HAD A CONVERSATION ABOUT THEIR FAUCET, IF HE SHOULD WAIT UNTIL HE CHANGED IT. I TOLD HIM IT WOULD BE BETTER IF THERE WAS NO FAUCET, THE MEMBER DID NOT WANT TO WAIT. 2ND VISIT:(2 WEEKS LATER)I ARRIVED, DID THE JOB,& DIDN'T CHARGE THEM, BECAUSE IT WAS ONLY A 10 MINUTE JOB. HE WAS NOT HOME. SHE DID NOT MENTION A WORD ABOUT ANY DAMAGES, UNTIL I WAS READY TO WALK OUT THE DOOR. SHE SAID HER GLASSES WERE DAMAGED WHILE IN THE CLOSET IN THE BATHROOM. SHE SAID SOME MIST GOT ON THE LENS AND SCRATCHED THEM. I TOLD HER THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE. WHEN I ASKED TO SEE THE GLASSES, SHE SAID SHE TOSSED THEM IN THE TRASH. I TOLD THE MEMBER NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD PAY OFF A CLAIM WITHOUT SEEING THE DAMAGES. OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS, SHE CALLED AND LEFT SOME NASTY MESSAGES ON MY PHONE.

DOUG WAS FLEXIBLE WITH MY WORK SCHEDULE, ARRIVED ON TIME AND TOOK THE TIME NEEDED TO PREP AND PROTECT THE REST OF THE BATHROOM FROM SPRAYED POLYURETHANE ENAMEL. THE FINISH WAS SO BEAUTIFUL, SHINY AND WHITE WHEN HE WAS DONE. IT IS DURABLE AND HAS TRANSFORMED THE LOOK OF THE BATHROOM. DOUG WAS VERY COURTEOUS, EFFICIENT AND PROFESSIONAL.
Description of Work: MY TUB WAS LOOSING THE FINISH AND HAD A GREY TONE TO IT. IT WAS OLD AND HAD A LOT OF WEAR AND TEAR. DOUG AT A-1 REFINISHERS SANDED THE TUB, REMOVED THE HARDWARE AND SPRAYED A BEAUTIFUL NEW DURABLE COAT ON IT. HE COVERED AND MASKED OFF THE REST OF THE BATHROOM.
