His communication was clear and he truly has a heart for this. All people associated with Thompson Custom Builders did a professional job and produced customized high-end results. It was great to not have to fight to get what we wanted. They knew what we wanted and they created it. No surprises or omissions. We experienced a devastating flood in our basement in 2018. When we talked with Thompson Custom Builders, the basement was concrete floor, wood studs, and the entire electrical had to be replaced. They took it from a blank canvas and created a wonderful basement with custom Amish built cabinetry and kitchenette, exercise area, full bathroom, and wonderful family room with TV viewing area. We love it! As a business owner myself, I appreciate their honest, truthful, approach to cost, setting expectations, work ethic and quality. Before hiring John, we visited this website to read all of his reviews and were encouraged by what we read. With the added referral from a friend and two other competitive bids, we decided to go ahead with the project with John. Now that we are completely done with the renovation, we are thrilled to say that all of the reviews were true. John has been in the biz a long time and he's figured out how to be fair while producing a great product. Starting off with the initial bid, he brought all of his subs to our house so they could make an accurate judgment about what the overall project would cost. Some other outfits will send one bidder, and then you might find out that the quote isn't as accurate as you'd hope. The transparency financially was one of our favorite parts of the process. Also, each of his subs are exceptional. I never had to worry if they'd show up to get the job done. They are all very talented and it was clear that it wasn't their first rodeo. I've never met a contractor who works harder. He always gave us 110%. I would definitely hire John and his crew again.

We had an excellent experience working with Thompson Custom Builders/John Thompson. Our project included the addition of a sun room and remodel of the kitchen and bath of our 1907 historic home. Thus, we were looking for a builder who would bring not only expertise but care (and patience) to an old home. Thompson Custom Builders was a perfect fit. John takes time to know his clients and develops a shared vision for a project. He is focused on quality and is professional, knowledgeable, transparent, detail-oriented, and communicative. We were in constant contact with John about details large and small. Fantastically well. We really enjoyed working with John and would absolutely hire him again. Not only was John a professional himself but virtually all of his subcontractors were excellent as well, special thanks to his finish carpenter Troy, his flooring expert Luke , and his painting crew headed up by Jesus, all for going above and beyond. Things went fantastically well, I enjoyed working with John Thompson and I'd be happy to hire him again. His subcontractors were all wonderful and a few of them were truly exceptional. His finish carpenter Troy, his painting crew led by Jesus, and his flooring guy Luke we're all really incredible outstanding workmen to deal with. Our project was highly custom, intricate and involved two separate neighboring properties. John Thompson was great to work with. He believes in full transparency of costs, project timing, and the home owner's concerns. He has chosen the best in the industry for carpentry, electrical, drywall/paint, and tile team did not disappoint. work was completed on (a tight) schedule, to budget and to a very high quality of workmanship. John also assisted with City Variances and planning board issues, completed all permits and was open and clear about hours, work process, supplies, and always careful to involve us in all decisions. The subcontractors were very professional and pleasant. problems were easy to address and rectify to our satisfaction with John.

We had met with several other companies before we found John and we were frustrated that their quotes for the project were hundreds of thousands of dollars over our budget, and they didn't seem to care about working with us to build a home we could afford. We were very discouraged. We feel so lucky we found John. He not only worked with us to help us find ways to cut costs, but his attention to detail is incredible. He goes way above and beyond to make sure things are perfect and he continues to check in with us, long after the project was finished. He's the hardest worker I have ever met, and he truly cares about his clients. Honestly, I don't have enough words to say how grateful we are for all he did for us. This project has been years in the making, and to see it come to fruition is incredible. We can't stop looking at the beautiful timbers and not a day goes by that we don't think how lucky we are to live here. And it was John Thompson who made that dream come true.

We had a great experience building a house with John Thompson. He has many years experience building houses in the Madison area and works with a great group of contractors. He was extremely detail oriented, able to explain every step of the process and very open about all aspects of the construction. John was always available and quick to respond when we needed to contact him. Our house was completed just as we imagined it: great quality and no surprises on the budget. We highly recommend John to anyone planning to build a house.

John is meticulous in everything he does and he expects the same in the subcontractors with which he works. He first got me in touch with a kitchen designer that spent personal time understanding my cooking style and what I wanted my kitchen to do. The designer provided me with options that I never knew existed and created a terrific base from which to begin. Every other discipline (electrical, plumbing, drywall, etc.) was as detailed and cooperative. The custom Amish cabinets are phenomenal and not much more expensive that big box ready-made. During the entire process John was a wealth of information, ensuring that everything was done in the correct sequence and proactively checking in to ensure everything was happening as it should.

We couldn’t have had a better experience. John Thompson was on top of the entire project and completed it on time. I never realized what went into a project like this and everyone who came to do work was professional, explained things and did an outstanding job.

I have an old farmhouse that needed a lot of work. John gutted most of the first floor to the studs. His electrician rewired everything, including the circuit breaker in the basement that was a safety hazard. It was completed to code and easily pasted inspection. John also helped us protect the new floors by spraying foam on the ceiling of the basement to prevent the wood from warping. The basecoat on the floor has been durable and is just as shinny as the day the floor was sealed. As one would imagine a house that is over 100 years old has settled. The floor was not was not flat, the ceiling was not even. John made everything flush and new again. My wife and I could not say enough good things about the outcome, the attention to detail and quality of material used. Everyone that comes to the house comments on how much they like how it turned out. To wrap up the project we had one last meeting to cover all that had happened. No other contractor has done that with us. It provided a sense of closure to the project and reiterated that we got exactly what we wanted and more. This is our dream house that we are going to live in for decades, because of that we choose John to ensure the job was done right.

This was our first major home project so we had our anxieties due to remodeling horror stories that you hear happening. However, John quickly put those anxieties to rest. John's attention to detail was second to none starting right from his initial bid. He came in with every aspect of our project laid out in a line item for his bid. The subcontractors he uses are the best of the best. They were not only good at what they do, they were extremely punctual and respectful of our home and family. Inevitably minor issues came up during the project, each time and every time John and his team handled it quickly and properly. He was always honest and very straight forward with us during the entire process. John is responsive to your calls and concerns. He has an open book policy regarding the actual invoices for the project costs for subs and vendors. So when a draw is due for payment of the project you see the actual invoices that were submitted to him. The project was completed on budget, ahead of schedule, and the work exceeded our expectations. Couldn't be happier with the results. We would highly recommend John and Thompson Custom Builders to anyone.

They were super nice, and time was at the essence. I went with another builder. Everyone is so busy. I had blueprints, but they were so busy, and they never got back to me. All the builders are so overwhelmed. I called five people, and they were all busy. I would won't someone to reject them, since I had minimal experience. He did come out. It seemed like they would be a good company for the background that I needed them to do. I am in an Indian burial site, and I have to have an Architect on site to put the footing and build the garage. Its on an uncatalogued Indian burial site. It screams out of their control. With the availability. They are just as available as anyone else. They have the experience that I would have used. I have an deadline of July 1st to meet. They called me back I think. I have six or more bids, and get them mixed up. I called them, and they called me back. I think I called them back, but its because they are all so busy. We never got very far. I inquired. They were right on time for the meeting. They were there on time.

Our home has been an excellent purchase. There have been no structural problems or surprises. When there have been component difficulties due to equipment issues (deck not draining well, window cranks wearing out prematurely), John has been here in person to correct the problem. He has done this free of charge and over a decade after the house was built. I would recommend Thompson Custom Builders without any reservation. Their work quality is excellent and their customer service cannot be beat.

John and the people he brought into our home were amazing. We were satisfied with every aspect of the job. The transformation of our home is simply amazing. We almost didn't buy this home because we were concerned about the total overhaul that it required, but it was the perfect home with the perfect yard in the perfect location, and we figured that if anyone could rehabilitate it, John could! Happily, we were right. John has impressive attention to detail, and he is an honest, conscientious, and kind person. He is also incredibly experienced; he has been building in the Madison area for 25 years, and he knows all the best people. Whenever we had a question or concern about an upcoming part of the project, John worked with us so we knew what to expect and worked around us so we could live in our house during two major remodeling projects. This was a big project as our family of 5 also lived in the basement while the main level was worked on. We also had a definite completion date as we had a graduation party on the calendar. John and his crews were respectful of our space and schedules as well as keeping the work flow moving. The work was completed to satisfaction, and on the time line expected. As with all remodels, the home owner must stay aware of what is happening each and every day. There were a couple of tough spots during this project, a wrong floor tile, a ceiling break through from the attic, and John handled this with professionalism. There were so many details involved in this project and the work flowed so quickly, we had a hard time keeping up with all the decisions and choices that were made in the initial bid. John communicated with us regularly on what we needed to pick out next, etc. Our new home is wonderful!

We could not be happier with the work that was done. John and his team are amazing! The quality of work could not be any better, and it was completed on time and on budget. We couldn't be happier with the added space we now have for our family of 6. John was wonderful to work with, very thorough and answered all of our questions. He takes pride in his work and that comes through in the crews he has working with him. We had a big project (for our life anyway), and they worked hard to get things done timely around the major holidays of thanksgiving and Christmas. His construction crew worked extremely hard and never seemed to be bothered by my two young boys always gawking and goofing around with them. We've had the space for 10 months now, and I still don't know what we did before it. We've had numerous compliments on how it looks like it was always a part of our house.
