Brian, the owner and plumber, set up an appointment to inspect the leak the same day I called. He arrived as scheduled, along with his apprentice son, and took a look at the problem. The crack was in a Y-fitting on a 4-in waste drain line, located in a very in-accessible location. Other plumbers had told me this was an all-day project (meaning $$$). Brian offered an alternative solution, whereby he would drill out the damaged part of the drain fitting using a "fitting saver" drill-type blade/bit. Once the cracked fitting was removed and cleaned out, it became a simple repair of installing a new pipe nipple and rubber coupling to rejoin the separated lines. After he completed the repair, he showed me why the crack had appeared: Over time, the alignment of the original plumbing had shifted, and thereby putting stress on the joint. He also showed me where the original PVC glue joint had not been properly glued in the first place. It was simply a matter of time before the joint gave way. He also caulked a leaking shower drain in the same area, without charge. He cleaned up appropriately, and was gone within two hours. His bill was very "cost friendly", and he did a great job on the repair. Well worth every dollar he charged. I would absolutely recommend Marshfield Plumbing & Heating for future repairs.
