Description of Work: The company responded promptly to my request for service through Angie's List and immediately scheduled time to complete the estimate. I requested painting of cracked and peeling wood trim around two garage doors and the wood kick plate below my front door. Some of the trim was separating and required minor repair, but no removal or replacement of any trim. I was a little surprised to learn the company had a minimum $500 project cost, but the representative was up front about this when he provided the estimate. He suggested I find additional work for them to do to make the cost worth the service call. So I asked them to also install a set of shutters on a second story window and paint the gable vent. I supplied the shutters - so they was not included in the cost. The work was done promptly on the date scheduled. The worker was very professional and polite; he did a great job and cleaned up the work site afterward. I guess I had a bit of sticker shock at the price, since previously I have done my own painting and handyman work! But overall it was worth it to have it done professionally and in a single day.

The services were provided on schedule and according to our agreement. Gary is tremendously professional and knowledgeable about all aspects of interior painting. When there were questions, he checked with me first, provided his insight and then proceeded. The final results were beautiful and exactly what I hoped for. I would be comfortable recommending Thrift Painting and Gary to anyone who needs to have interior work done. I will definitely use this company in the future.
Description of Work: Gary from Thrift Painting and an assistant painted the entire interior of my house.

The painter arrived late and proceeded to start the job even though I was no longer home (had called their office and asked to re-schedule as I had to leave for work). When I got home, I saw that the wrong color was already applied (was supposed to be a natural cedar color; was stained a very dark brown) to the front of the house. After an extended argument with the painter and the office, I was told that they would complete the job with the wrong color and on time...no allowance on the price; just an admission that it was the wrong color!! The job was NOT completed on time (painter continued to work through graduation party in front of guests!!) although there were no weather delays.
Description of Work: Stained the exterior (cedar siding) of my house...the wrong color!!

Response from Thrift Painting
Dear Angie's List Members, We were very surprised to see a report about a project done over 15 YEARS AGO. we looked back at our records to find that we did indeed complete a project for this member. We don't recall the actual job as it was 15 years ago. The project total was $1,862 not $4,000. We don't require any money up front and don't expect to be paid until our customers are satisfied. We ask Angie's List members to read all of the posts about us to see what other Angie's List members say about our work.

Their representative went over the entire process regarding materials and methods to be used as well as the expected timeframe. The estimate was quickly provided via email and regular mail. They accomodated extra work requested by us (one additional door trim to be painted). All work was done on time and at the expected price. They did a good job. And we would use them again in the future.
Description of Work: We had a 10x12 foot elevated deck, deck steps, posts and railings re-stained/painted. Trim to 4 doors and garage door trim were also painted.

John Kitto, one of the founders of Thrift Painting, did the estimate, and another person did the actual wall prep and painting. Very happy with the quality of the job. I urged a primer coat because we were going from a darker (much darker) color to a lighter color. John demured and felt that two coats of paint would do the job. Lo and behold, the paint did not cover, and there was considerable bleed through of the old paint. Granted, I supplied the paint. It was not cheap paint. It was Pittsburgh Paint, a nationally recognized brand. The label says "covers in one coat." Do not ever believe this. This is one of the great lies, along with "the check is in the mail." But I digress. It's debatable whether Thrift's paint would have covered or not; we'll never know. But the point is, I was dissatisfied with the job, and John sent the painter back to apply a THIRD COAT at no extra charge (I just had to supply another gallon of the paint). The third coat was the charm. The job is beautiful, and kudos to John and Thrift Painting for "making it right."

Very well. Communication was excellent throughout the process from setting up the initial consultation to finishing up the job. They also kept us well informed of possible schedule delays due to weather. John gave us much appreciated help in picking out appropriate colors, and the work itself went very well--right on schedule.

John, who had given the estimate, came on the day scheduled with Dan and he showed Dan where & what to do. John also came to survey the work after its completion. Both men have been here before-- Dan painted our living and dining room a few years ago. Excellent, careful work!
Description of Work: The ceilings of one bedroom and the main bathroom needed surface removed before priming and painting, since paint and plaster were peeling. Some other small details of chipped paint surfaces in the hall and in the living room also needed to be touched up. J

I called, and we met with John to get an estimate. He was professional and his estimate was very close to what we ended up paying -- one room needed a second coat, which wasn't originally planned on, but they asked whether we wanted it done before doing it. I called back 3 days later (I think), and left a message saying that we would like to have them do the job, but I wasn't sure if it could be done before we moved in or not. We had 3 other projects going on at the same time, and were trying to get all of it done before moving; so, there were only about 2 or 3 days that the painting could have been done on. John told me he could pull some guys off of another job, due to the weather, and that they could do it the next day (one of those free days). It couldn't have been better, since new carpeting was going to be put in the day after that. He came early the next morning to get things organized, and had at least 5 guys there to do the painting (could have been 6 or 7, I didn't actually count them while they were there). I gave John the list of paint colors we wanted; he made a couple of calls and sent guys out to get them. I think I left at that point. I came back a couple of times to check on things (since I was only about 3 miles away). The first time is when they asked about the one room needing a second coat; I agreed, and so they sent someone to get another container of that color. The second time I came back, they were close to done, so I just stuck around until they were all done. As with any group of people, some guys were friendlier than others, but none of them were rude, and they didn't seem to mind me asking a few questions. They also offered some extra advice (helpful hints, you might say). They removed the wall plates for the light switches before painting, and put them back on when done. And, I didn't notice any paint on anything that shouldn't have gotten it. (If I look really close, I can see a tiny bit on the bottom of this one strip of wallpaper that they had to paint around, but I don't think I could have done any better.) I was impressed with the speed of both getting the work scheduled and completed, and also with the quality of the painting.
Description of Work: They painted the walls of 4 rooms, 2 hallways, a small free-standing wall, and the inside of 3 closets, using 5 different colors that we selected (from 2 different brands of paint). This was a home that we had just bought, so there was no furniture to speak of.

Estimator was punctual and extremely professional. Explained the process in detail and answered all my questions patiently. We picked out colors. We got a reasonable estimate and scheduled pressure washing. Called them with our color choice and set up date for washing. They did a great job and did not mess up our yard. The painter was on time, professional and answered my questions. He was careful of our plants and re-installed our bird feeders, which was appreciated! We were extremely please and are considering having them do some inside painting over the winter.

Average. Larry (contact and estimate) was very helpful and went out of his way to help with color matching, but was not enthusiastic about corrections requested. The painting crew (Mark) was inflexible and not interested in extra effort to do the job right. They did great with spraying, but cut corners on other areas like trim, concrete and metal surfaces. Window edges and rubber seals were handled poorly.

Response from Thrift Painting
Thrift appreciates the comment that we "did great with spraying" since the spray painting of the soffet, fascia, and siding represents about 98% of the surfaces we painted. We spray many aluminum sided homes each year and people are very satisfied! We applied an additional coat of paint, at no charge and without objection, to some flat smooth aluminum trim surrounding the front window. The homeowner may characterize this as "cutting corners", but sometimes very smooth areas require an additional coat. The "rubber seals" he mentions are the pieces of weather-stripping on the edges of his windows. They should not be painted. We tried to explain that they would not perform correctly if painted. He insisted they be painted. We did paint them for him. We painted a straight line over the jagged old paint on his window edges to improve their look. Typically, on old wooden window sash, you want the paint to be on the glass because it seals the glass/wood joint. The homeowner wanted all of the paint removed from the glass. When the homeowner brought this to our attention, we pointed out that there was a lot of old paint (different color) on the glass. He had not noticed this prior. We did remove all of the paint for him. In retrospect, we should have pointed out the existing old paint on the glass before proceeding.

They did a great job. They called before they came. The work cost exactly what they quoted me for. The estimate was very competitive. It rained on some of the days that they were scheduled to paint, but they worked with my schedule to complete the work. They were very neat and cleaned up before they left. They completed the work in the amount of time they said they were going to. They were very polite and easy to work with.

The painters finished one day early from what they told me in the beginning. The quality of the work was the best! My house looks like a magazine. It was the best thing I ever did. I did request that they did not work certain times of the day and they were fine with that.
Description of Work: I had them paint my entire 1600 square foot house. They primed and then put the coat of color on that I chose for each room. They also did all of the trim and prep work for me. They painted the kitchen, dining room, living room, family room, hallway, two bathrooms and one bedroom.

Went well. Painter showed up on time each day and kept at it. He was pleasant, tidy, willing to talk about other decorating issues in the house. Taped woodwork and cabinets carefully prior to painting. After painter had finished, I noted a small area between the kitchen window and an overhead cabinet that he had missed. I called and he came back the next day at an agreed upon time and painted the small patch. We paid by check when the job was completed.
Description of Work: Prepared, patched, and painted walls and ceiling of living room, dining room, front entry, stair well, and kitchen. Caulked joints as needed. Moved appliances in kitchen. Cleaned up all mess. They supplied paint that we had selected, included in estimated price.
