Initial consult: I was contacted by Susan to set up a time when Ted could come take a look at the project. We weren't quite ready at that time, so waited until we had decided on colors. We then set up a time for Ted to take a look. He arrived right on time. We discussed our needs as follows: -- Paint the kitchen and adjoined dining area (not including the ceiling) -- Paint 1 accent wall in the dining area -- I also said that I would be painting the hallway that connects to the kitchen and the stairwell and asked if he could cut in the top of the stairwell since it was hard to reach. He thought all of the above was doable within the 7-hour time I had purchased. We showed him the colors we had selected and confirmed that we would be using Benjamin Moore Aura paint (some of the best). He told us the quantities we should buy of the 2 colors. Scheduling: We were contacted by Susan to arrange a day for the work. Got the details worked out with a minor problem, but got it worked out. No problem. Day of work: Ted arrived within 15 minutes of schedule and got to work laying down drop cloths, etc. I had the paint ready to go. I asked him if he could help paint more of the stairwell instead of painting the accent wall, since it was a more challenging space for me. There must have been some miscommunication because he did help me cut in the top of the stairwell (which we had agreed to earlier), but I had hoped he would have time to paint more of the stairwell itself in lieu of the accent wall. He did cut in the top and sides of the accent wall before he left, which was helpful -- but ultimately, I did get as much painted as I expected. My request or expectations must not have been clear. So in total, the kitchen and dining areas were painted, the accent wall was cut in on the top and sides, and the stairwell was cut in on the top. I did the rest. He was kind enough to let me use his ladder and paintbrush holder extension to paint the stairwell ceiling and upstairs hallway (while he worked in the kitchen). I appreciated that. Quality: Overall, the quality was good. After he left, I found many areas near the trim where the old (yellow) color was showing through. One area is next to the refrigerator so is high visibility. I will need to fix this. He tapes minimally (which saves a lot of time) so the edges seem to be painted more lightly. I was disappointed with having to go back and fix these areas (as I've yet to do it). He was respectful. In all, it was a big help. I'm a good painter, but a slow one. He was able to get done in one day (although with a few problem areas) what would have taken me two. Recommendations: I would recommend that Ted ask the homeowner if there are any areas of particular concern or ask if there are any specific requests (i.e. when trimming along a caulked space if the paint should go up to the caulk edge or cover the caulk. He could advise if there are best practices in such areas.) Better to ask than to assume. He might also want to provide a checklist of things for the homeowner to do prior to the day of work. He also discarded the empty quart sized can of Aura paint, leaving a small amount in the larger gallon can -- wish I could have transferred it into that small can to save space.
Description of Work: Hired Ted to paint the walls of our kitchen and adjoining dining room areas (not the ceiling).

Thank you for the nice report. Perhaps given more time then the contracted 7 hour time allowed I would have been able to spend more time going over the extra details...Something customers should be aware of, I like to wait until the paint dries to see what needs to be done as far as touch goes.

Ted was very prompt, was willing to use our paint, used multiple colors to complete the job and did a great job.
Description of Work: Ted came in and painted a bathroom, bedroom and did a minor drywall repair. He was clear on the time needed, we agreed on a price for services beyond the Angie's List deal and Ted was super prompt with his estimate and scheduled work. When we're ready for more painting we'll be giving Ted a call to come back!

Ted was a pleasure to work with. He communicated very clearly before he started what could most likely be done in the time we'd allotted for the work, and said we could create a separate contract to do any additional work beyond the promotional rate if we chose. We did ultimately decide to add an extra half day in order to get some more work done. His work was very good. The job involved painting close to recently refinished wood floors and he was very careful not to get paint on the floor. The caulking and painting look great. We very much appreciated his attention to detail. He was also efficient in terms of his time and paint usage.
Description of Work: We recently bought a new (old) house and after probably more than 100 work hours of painting by us and our friends we just ran out of steam. So we hired Ted using his Angie's List offer to help finish off some of the detail work. He spent 1.5 days in our house painting trim around windows and on base boards and quarter round, plus some door frames and the trim on a staircase. Most of the work was in a single color, with one room that needed a different color. He also caulked areas where trim had separated from the wall or ceiling.

They came out as expected and worked hard for the allotted time. I had some extra work I wanted them to do and they came out and gave a great estimate for everything combined. They were meticulous and painstakingly careful to make sure everything was done exactly to my liking. The man who did the work is a perfectionist and made sure everything was done the best it could be.

Ted is very friendly. Prompt. Called well in advance of scheduled day, called a few days before to confirm. He did come early on in the process to assess the job. I hired a professional painter because of the challenge of using a color hard to work with and also to have the cutting look professional. What went wrong in my book is he did not advise me early on about getting premium paint to minimize the number of coats. Only after applying 3 coats did he say that it is important to get premium paint and not just from Menards or Home Depot. How was I suppose to know? I feel he should have been more assertive in recommending the right kind of paint rather than leaving it up to the non-professional, me. He came back the second day to apply a third coat. This was a surprise to me that he would come back on a second day, and I appreciated it very much. Again, this goes back to his being a nice guy. Pleasant to talk with, just overall nice. But in hindsight, I would have liked him to be more assertive with his professional knowledge and TELL me, get good paint or let him get it. A little sloppiness I had to clean or touch up. The outlets had paint on, and I removed the baseboards to make it easier for him and in a few places, he did not paint low enough, discovered after I put back the baseboards, and the baseboards actually went on higher than before because of the laminate floor I installed. In fact, he was so nice that I almost feel guilty writing this. However, I did not get the professional job I expected. He needs to take charge of the job and not let the homeowner get the paint. He should adjust his prices for the time getting the paint and the cost of it. As for sharing my review, if future customers let him take charge of the job, like getting good paint, and not leaving it to cheap people like me, I think they will be more satisfied than I was. If premium paint was used, like he said after the job was done, coverage would have been better. I would rate him a notch higher if he took charge in terms of what kind/quality paint to get It's my fault for getting a cheaper paint, but when hiring a professional, I think that person should take charge of all aspects of the job.
Description of Work: Painted one bedroom. Two colors. One color was sort of a red - a difficult color to paint. The other was an off-white, applied to ceiling and two of the four walls.

Overall Ted did an OK job on the walls. He did not tape any cracks ( just caulked them ). All the cracks still show. Some were large and look pretty bad. If you have an older home with plaster walls I'd try someone else.

The customer hired us for 7 hours only, it is an older home, the 7 hours does not include extensive dry wall or plaster repair, this would involve extra time and days to come in before and do all of the plaster first and then paint a of couple coats.. This was not agreed upon to do the plaster work and Ted did mention all he would do is to caulk and the customer agreed to this, and the customer only wanted the 7 hours that was paid for...

Can't say hasn't done anything! Ted actaully came out and looked at the work and gave me a timeframe. He was very polite and professional. I called back to speak with him regarding the work, and the woman I spoke to was very rude, which turned me off from the work.
Description of Work: Work has not been done. We are on the list. 4/15/2013 We haven't heard from him either! He came out shortly after we paid the money. He looked around and said he was booked up until April and he would contact us after that.

Ted did a professional job in all respects. He was very attentive to detail and there were no problems with paint spills or drips onto woodwork or the flooor. He was pleasant throughout the time he was working, and we felt comfortable enough to leave him alone as we did outside chores away from home. We contracted an extra hour of time to finish the work, but he had told us that might happen in the preliminary evaluation, so we were not surprised or blind-sided. His work definitely improved the appearance of our home.
Description of Work: We hired Ted to paint our conected kitchen, dining and and living room areas, including the ceiling. Kithens can be difficult because of all the taping around the cabinetry. We also had a large water stain on the ceiling from an upstairs laundry leak. Ted applied a stain covering paint coat first (Killz) to the affected areas and followed with a second coat of the main color. He covered all furniture surfaces with cloth or plastic and cleaned up completely after he was done.

Not a positive experience at all because they "no showed" when they were supposed to come to provide a quote.
Description of Work: I emailed them after seeing reviews on Angie's List. I got a call back the same day and was positively impressed by their quick response. I also appreciated that the person I spoke with told me that it would be a few weeks before they could actually do the work. We set up a time for them to stop by to give me an estimate the following Saturday at 1 pm. They never showed and never called to let me know they weren't coming nor did they call today, the Monday following. I don't remember the last time this happened that a service person didnt at least call to acknowledge a missed appointment. So this was disappointing to say the least!

This painting job was done during the first week of December 2012. It was a special on Angie's List which I purchased in September of 2012. I called to set up a time and it was agreed that the work be done by the end of November. As the end of November approached, I had not heard from Ted's Painting so I called him. At this time he could not do the work until the first week in December to which I agreed. He arrived on the day we agreed upon to paint. At the end of the day he seemed to be in a rush. He said he had to pick his wife up from work and could not be late. There was no walk-through to check for missed spots as he had to leave. After he wash gone I noticed that there was about a quarter inch white line around the base boards and upon closer inspection noticed a lot of problem with the detail work of painting corners, near the ceiling, tiny areas around door molding and some paint in an already painted wall of a different color. I was not happy with the job done. I called to have him come back to correct the problem, but not until after Christmas and he said that would be okay. I expected him to call to set up a time to correct the problem in January. When I had not heard from him at the end of January, I called him to set up a time. He said he had to check his calendar and would get back to me. He left a message on the answering machine and said he could be there on Wednesday or Friday of the following week (Feb 20 or 22). At 4:30 PM on Wednesday, Feb. 20th he called and said he could be there on Friday. I was not able to have him paint on Friday. He then said he would be on the West side of Madison next week and could maybe be there one day next week. By this time it became apparent to me that he would rather not do the work. I did not during any of these times get a definite time to do the work. I then chose to no longer use his services since I don't believe he really wanted to correct the errors made.
Description of Work: Ted's Painting Angie's List Special: 7 hours of painting for $199.00 The spaces to be painted were a hallway and the living room in a 1970's ranch style home.

This customer bought an Angie's List Coupon for the second time. Did not indicate that she wanted me to go over the 7 hours as she had done the first time. When I arrived at the second time, I mentioned that I had to leave by 4, which is actually over what the 7 hours would have been. Also, I had indicated that the previous painters had left sloppy white paint lines along the stained trim woodwork. As far as my leaving I didn't hurry up the work, I hurried up the clean up, as she knew I had to leave by 4. We received a phone call about the lines, etc. which obviously needed a little extra time, she also asked if I was going to charge extra for the touch up and I said no, I would come by and take care of the problem. Between the customers schedule and mine it was difficult getting over there. I did call a few times with no answer and then when she was able to have me over I was in the middle of my next job. When I finally was able too, she told me to forget it, she would have somebody else take care of it. Also, another extra hour or two should have been allowed because the customer picked out a darker color to go over a lighter color which requires extra time.....

We purchased the Angie's List Big Deal for $199 for 7 hours of painting on 11/14/12. Ted's wife Susan promptly contacted us to make arrangements for Ted to stop by to take a look at the work we wanted done. When Ted arrived on 12/1 we discussed a few options with him. We knew for sure that we wanted the kitchen to be painted. Originally we'd wanted a faux finish on the living room wall, which is quite large due to a cathedral ceiling. We also considered having Ted paint a bedroom for us. We asked for time estimates as we were interested in staying at or below the 7 hours. Ted pointed out that the kitchen + the faux finish on the wall would put us over 7 hours, not to mention adding the bedroom. We decided to paint the bedroom ourselves and forego the faux finish in the living room. Ted coached us on types of paint to consider as well as how much paint to purchase for each room. Very helpful! He said he'd give us a call in early January to set up the appointment for work. By January 31st we contacted Ted & Susan as we hadn't yet heard from them. We arranged for Ted to do the work on February 11th. One of us took the day off. At some point that morning we contacted Ted & Susan as we hadn't been given a time to expect him. Susan called back and followed up with an e-mail explaining that Ted's back had gone out and he would need to reschedule. She did apologize for the inconvenience. We rescheduled for February 19th. When Ted arrived we mentioned that the paint store clerk had advised that we use a gray primer under the paint color for the living room since the wall was currently an off-white and we were having Ted paint with a deep copper color. Our thought was that we could apply the primer to the living room wall while Ted worked on the kitchen - again, in interest of staying under the 7 hours. Ted deemed the primer unnecessary. Ted advised that if he were unable to finish the job he'd be back the following day. We left him to his work and went to ours. When we came home the work was unfinished. No big deal. But as there was no note or call we weren't sure if he'd already worked the 7 hours or what time to expect him the following day. Ted did complete the work the next day and we were then advised that we'd be billed for 4 extra hours. Though Ted and Susan seem to be a bit disorganized and less professional than some, and we were disapppointed in the miscommunication/underestimation of work time, in the end we were happy with Ted's work.

I talked with the husband as I found out when I arrived they had picked 2 deep base colors and explained because of this it was actually going to take a longer time and the husband understood and agreed to this. Then I also contacted the customers through email in the evening that it was going to be about 4 extra hours. The job actually went over 5 1/2 hours, and I ended up charging for 4 hours, then they were upset so we settled for 2 hours... This has been a problem as I come across jobs where customers haven't decided on the colors, so I have make it clear to customers that if its a deep base color the job will end up taking extra time.

I would rate Ted's Painting as an A+. Ted arrived on time, was professional, worked constantly and was meticulous with his painting. When he was finished, he cleaned up his work and left the area as clean as when he came. No drips on the woodwork or doors, carpet, etc. I am more than pleased with the service and would hire him again. Thanks Ted...I love how it turned out!

From the beginning Ted's painting was very professional. They actually contacted me first to see when I needed the service and to set up an estimate. Ted came by and looked around the areas that needed painting. Since we bought the "painter for the day" he told us exactly what he could do in that time frame and answered any questions we had. We decided on our living and dining room. Ted's then followed up with us on their availability, we picked a date and Ted arrived as planned. He is very kind and hard working. We are very happy with his work and will use him again in the future.

Ted showed up at the scheduled time. He was careful to cover everything and tape where required. He was neat, timely, and professional. We did need to extend his engagement with us by an additional two hours as the color we picked for the living room did not match as we had planned, so another coat was required. He rearranged his schedule to get our work done the next morning.

Had a little difficulty getting scheduled because he was soo busy ... but did come and paint on scheduled day and time. 2 coats were necessary to cover previous color which took the entire 7 hours/$199 deal. I also wanted the stairway walls done ... so he did come back to do that which costed an additional $150. His painting was very good and he also cleaned up afterwards ... careful not to drip paint ..

The process took some time, because we let Ted know we were in no hurry to get the job done. (We weren't currently using the lower level, and later, he needed to take time off because of an illness.) When we first met Ted at our home, he explained the entire process, and he told us exactly what (and in what quantity) we'd need to purchase for his use to complete the job. We were especially pleased to hear that he could do all of it--patching the damage, priming, adding texture, and putting on the final coat of paint. That meant we didn't have to find someone for dry wall repair, another person for wall texture, and use Ted only for painting. Ted always came when he said he would--and if behind schedule, phoned to say he would be a little late. He was easy to work with through-out the whole process.
Description of Work: Ted patched drywall damaged by a leak in the plumbing on the floor above, , came back another day when the patching compound was dry to spray- on the wall-texture to match existing texture, put on primer, and returned to paint the top-coat of paint.

I had paid for an Angie's list $199 special for 7 hours of painting. I had Ted over in November to talk about several possibilities for our 7 hour package. After some discussion we agreed that he could do out stair well in the time since it did not require a second coat. He indicated that he would do the job early in Dec. At the end of the second week of Dec I had to call to see when he was planing to come. He apologized and we set a time for 20 Dec which was canceled do to the snow. He finally came 8 January. The work was good but he did not complete the job. He had left before I got home and has not gotten back to me on the job. This last weekend I finished the job in little better than a hour.

Response from Ted's Painting
Ted had spoken to the customers wife about the last lower wall going down to the basement would most likely go over the 7 hours. The customers wife did not reply about paying for the extra hour it would have takenTed to do this. Plus, one of the colors took one coat but the accent color ended up requiring 2 coats, therefore taking up the alloted time. Ted actually painted for 7 1/2 hours and then when he reached the time limit he went home. No one was there and he would have come back or stayed if someone had said something to him about the extra time. When Ted did leave he made sure everything was locked up and left through the garage. Ted apologizes for any miscommunication on his part, but just to say he has wonderful work ethics and prides himself in his professionalism..

We had a tough painting job - bead board ceilings that needed nail holes filled and painting. Ted and his wife Sue who does the scheduling) were wonderful. They followed up quickly with phone calls and set the date for the job, working around our schedule. Ted arrived promptly and did a highly professional job. The ceilings look great. Ted was so good to work with, did a neat, quality job and cleaned up when he was done. We would definitely have Ted back for more paint jobs!
Description of Work: Bead board ceilings that needed nail holes filled and then all painted.
