It turned out very well. The job they did was fantastic. You get what you paid for.
Description of Work: I used the basement remodeling service of Larson Builders LLC. They did renovation of our basement. Turning it back into a laundry room than an office, a little bit of mould remediation, we had a flood incident so they had to put in the proper drywall. They did all the finished work, contacted the painting works, and got the air duct put in to the lower basement. They set the proper person to put in the exhaust that we had an issue.

This customer was courteous and patient throughout the project. We were able to put their basement back together with some upgrades after there had been water damage. It was a pleasure doing business with them on this project, and I hope and return some day to help customize their home to their needs.

All of the work was done in a timely manner and with professionalism. Rick Larson was very responsive to our needs and kept us up-to-date on all of the work by the various subcontractors. Pleasure to work with them would definitely hire them again.
Description of Work: Remodeled our basement. Added a family room, sewing room, workshop, bathroom and storage area. Did a complete remodel from new walls, insulation, electrical, plumbing, heating and flooring.

This was a great basement remodel. One of my most memorable. Not only was it a great design and customers to work with; but I had my first born son, Orion 5 weeks early in the middle of the project. What a surprise for me and the customer. They were excellent dealing with a bit of changed schedule. What a pleasure it was to work with them. I hope they enjoy their new space for years to come.

They tried valiantly to find a ready-made vanity that would work and when that effort failed they provided the perfect custom vanity and did the installation beautifully while I was out of town. I highly recommend them and would use them exclusively if the occasion should arise again.
Description of Work: They replaced a custom bathroom vanity and nearby wood trim following an inside "discovered too late" plumbing leak.

I really wished we were able to get what the customer needed in a more reasonable timeframe. After having email issues, this was believed to be much sooner that a proposal was in fact sent. I believe the customer did not receive it and didn't even realize. I resent the proposal a few weeks after this report was given. Regardless, even at that point, we should have gotten back much sooner. This is typically not how we do business and we will always strive to exceed the expectations of our customer before, during, and after the job.

We had a bathroom that hadn't been touched since 1959. It was starting to smell. Both me and my wife could tell that Rick was very excited to dig in and ready to serve. We didn't expected the amount of mortar holding up the existing shower stall which took an extra day for a tool rental and a lot more weight to haul out. Nor did we expect a foundational crack that lead to ground erosion under the foundation of the old shower stall. Rick used Angies list and his contacts to get Dry Otter to fix these unexpected problems in less than a week. Every sub contractor he used was great....from cabinets (better than our kitchen cabinets), plumber, carpenter, dry waller/painters, flooring, and electrician.
Description of Work: Completely tore down and remodeled our downstairs bathroom. Replaced sink, built in cabinet, added a matching toilet topper cabinet, replaced the upstairs and downstairs toilet. Widened and added some height to our new shower stall. Foam jacked under the eroded shower stall foundation (very quickly and professionally) and repaired a foundational crack. Installed mold resistant drywall, added a light above the shower and replaced the exhaust fan. Also leveled and replaced our floor.

The overall job went very well. Rick was timely and responsive throughout the entire process. We did all the design ourselves, and he had suggestions for websites for fixtures and was able to refer us to a carpenter he works with to custom build a vanity and wall cabinet for us. We used a combination of mosaic tile and subway tile on the bathroom walls, and there were a few minor defects in the mosaic tile (which was installed by a subcontractor), including a couple spots where individual tiles are not laid straight, but these are more noticeable to us than anyone outside looking at the bathroom, particularly since the mosaic covers one entire wall. There was also some slight damage to the mosaic where a hole was drilled in it for pipe installation, but that's beneath the vanity, and not clearly visible. Overall, looks very good and we're pleased with the results.
Description of Work: Rick's company did a complete remodel of our bathroom from top to bottom, including tear out of all existing wall tile, flooring and fixtures, laying new floor tile and wall tile, replacing all lighting, plumbing and fixtures.

See above. Sub-contractor did a quick and thorough installation of ventilation system.
Description of Work: Rick Larson of Larson Builders initially gave us a comprehensive building plan and bid for our Lampworking studio. After some fine tuning, we determined that we only needed the ventilation part of his bid which he had sub-contracted to a HVAC supplier who did the actual work. Rick was professional, available, and most understanding of our needs. I woul definitely call him again.

We are homeowners who have not ventured into large project contracting in the past, and approached this project with a significant level of trepidation, with scenes from the movie "The Money Pit" dancing in the back of our heads. We had developed design plans prior to sending out requests for bids from ~ 8 contractors selected from Angies List reviews, and due to other work commitments we ended up interviewing 3 contractors, including the contractor who had worked with us to develop the design plans. We chose Larson LLC because of the level of detail provided in their bid estimate as well as the knowledge and attention to detail displayed in our subsequent discussions. Our overall experience with this project has been extremely positive. Although we ran into some structural issues early on (our house is 75 years old), we were able to work through them. These issues could have resulted in our dropping the project, but we felt the contractor was always honest and straightforward in laying out our options, and allowing us to make decisions without undue pressure. Throughout the project the contractor increased our comfort level by always keeping us informed of the work and schedule, providing an atmosphere where questions and concerns were welcomed, and paying close attention to details. By the end of the project our relationship with the contractor felt more like a partnership than the usual owner/contractor relationship. Larson LLC coordinated 7 sub-contractors ( Krizan Construction - concrete work; Harker Heating & Cooling - HVAC; The Electrician - electrical; All State Roofing; Dixon Drywall & Texture; JP's Painting & Staining; T.S. Masonry) along with their own employees and 3 outside contractors. From our standpoint the coordination went very well with a deadline established by us for the interior work being met. We were impressed with the selection of the subcontractors, for the most part they seemed to reflect the same openness and attention to detail as Larson LLC. The coordination with the outside contractors was also done smoothly. We'll try to distill down our experience with Larson LLC in the following points: 1) The quality of the work and attention to detail gave us the confidence that the finished project was done right. 2) Rick Larson was always accessible, either on-site or by telephone. In one case we had a minor emergency that he responded to on a Saturday morning and within an hour of our call had a crew addressing the problem. 3) Rick Larson and his employees were very open with the work schedule and with encouraging any questions or concerns that we had. When issues arose that required a decision on our part, Rick was very good at laying out options, providing recommendations, and respecting our decisions when they didn't follow his recommendation. 4) Although this may seem like a minor concern, Rick and his employees were very diligent in cleaning up the work site every day before leaving. This made living with the disruption of the construction much more bearable. 5) Rick Larson and his employees and sub contractors were open, friendly and upbeat and made for a positive work atmosphere and good working relationship. In conclusion, the addition turned out better than we had imagined, the experience was no where near as onerous as we had initially expected, and we would be happy to use Larson LLC for any work in the future as well as recommend them to others.
Description of Work: The main project was a two story addition to the back of the house. This entailed demolition of an existing 3 season porch, tyeing in a frost wall to existing foundations, rough carpentry, windows, doors, HVAC addition to existing furnace/AC, electrical, drywall, siding the addition as well as the existing house, stonework including tuckpointing the existing house, trim carpentry, construction of a 2nd story deck, roofing, eaves including a leaf guard and exterior painting. Carpeting, interior painting, tile work and railings were contracted with other vendors but required coordination with Larson LLC.

We selected Rick Larson of Larson Builders as our contractor after interviewing and receiving three bids. Rick was energetic, engaged, and clearly capable of the work. We requested a challenging, compressed construction schedule, and Rick rose to the challenge and delivered. When multiple surprises emerged during demolition and subsequent construction, Rick quickly researched and developed cost-effective, high-quality options, maximizing our ability to shape the final project. We love our new space and know that we've added lasting value to the home. We'd hire Rick again in a heartbeat. DEMO ? GREAT work all around; efficient work and tidy cleanup. ROUGH CARPENTRY ? GREAT work on walls, soffits, and stairs. We really appreciate the extra effort to patch old concrete foundation damage, and his solo work abilities are amazing. FINISH CARPENTRY ? GREAT. The oak panel doors look fantastic, and this was an amazing job of installation and finishing touches ? Rick?s finish carpenter is an amazingly talented craftsman and his opinions on addressing design or other issues have been a great help. The baseboards and shoe are also looking great, as are the window casings. The cabinets in the office and bath area are perfect and exactly as I imagined them. The granite counter top looks great too. ELECTRICAL ? GREAT work on the rough-in and the flexibility to add/adjust on-the-fly. Finish work was good and a few minor issues (crooked faceplates) were addressed without hassle ? great customer service. PLUMBING ? OUTSTANDING work all-around including complicated work moving many water pipes, replumbing cold soft water to upstairs and downstairs fixtures, gas line and vent moves, etc... Top-notch. HVAC ? Everything looks and works GREAT. We love our new dual-zoned system. INSULATION ? GREAT, efficient work! The basement climate is a night-and-day difference versus pre-remodel condition. Temperature is warm, stable, and uniformly distributed throughout the space. The great attention to detail in insulation means our basement zone heat has yet to turn on for more than 30 minutes a day, even in late-November weather. WALL & CEILING FINISHING Drywall ? I really appreciated the advice on sound-deadening products and the quick option to save headspace with special SilentFX in low-clearance areas. The batt insulation, soundboard, and z-channel accomplished exactly what we?d hoped, and the basement is now a properly separate, private space. Paint ? the paint job looks FANTASTIC. Excellent attention to detail. FLOORING ? The entire flooring crew has been FANTASTIC, efficient, and a pleasure to work with. The laminate floors looks great, and it?s great to know the concrete?s now properly sealed beneath them. The stair carpet looks great also. TILE ? Bath tile looks GREAT, and I appreciate the extra effort to address our unique ceiling height/tile height issue. Great solution with the extra course of glass tiles. PATIO ? The concrete crew did an OUTSTANDING job creating a new, more-expansive stamped-concrete patio which will be enjoyed for many years to come. Great improvement over the previous space, and everything looks amazing and exactly as designe

High-quality meticulous workmanship with incredible attention to detail, excellent ongoing communication (which is vital for a successful project), honesty, creativity, and responsiveness are the hallmarks of doing business with Rick Larson. As in all major projects, we had a few bumps in the road but Rick was able to address the issues that did arise creatively and to the thorough satisfaction of all concerned. His choices of subcontractors for masonry, electrical and drywall were all outstanding as were his own employees. This was a very complex and expensive project and the finished product is excellent , due in no small part to Rick?s talents . We recommend Larson Builders to anyone without hesitation and second all the positive comments from other clients published here. Rick Larson is truly a gifted contractor.
Description of Work: We had an outstanding experience with Larson Builders for an extensive home remodeling project that occurred July to October, 2011 and included the following: · Complete tear-off of wood siding and replacement with high quality insulated vinyl siding · Replacement of five large windows including major strengthening of structural support · Replacement of an unused door, modifying opening to accommodate a small window · Replacement of front and back entry doors · Painting of gable eaves · Replacement of wood soffit and fascia with high quality aluminum products We researched and got quotes from five contractors before settling on Larson Builders. Rick Larson’s thoroughness and detailed vision for what needed to be done was noticeably greater than what we saw in the other contractors’ proposals and the quoted price was still within range. His proposal was highly detailed and all modifications throughout the project were clearly communicated both verbally and in writing. He was willing to research product lines in which we expressed an interest and also suggested many other high quality materials for use throughout the project. All of the window replacements required modifying the dimensional openings and, in the case of the living room windows, necessitated a major structural upgrade. This upgrade was unknown until the work was begun and we believe many other contractors would have gone ahead with the installation of the replacement windows without addressing the structural problem. A similar issue occurred involving the front door installation and Rick addressed that as well.

Description of Work: Numerous facets of home repair/remodeling were performed on this job. Areas of work included major foundation/front stoop cement repair/replacement with beautiful new wood railing, areas of roof and soffit repair, and a complete front closet remodel. All work was done as promised and to high standard. And as usual, Rick was in frequent contact with us about the project and left all spaces in much better condition than he found them.

Started on time and finished ahead of schedule. Two bedrooms, full bath and family room in a basement.
Description of Work: The actual price was considerably more than we wanted to spend, however, Rick came in with a base price and a spread sheet that showed exactly where the money was going. In addition, the spread sheet listed options that we could choose. We spent more than we had originally planned, but we knew exactly what we were paying for. Rick was one of 7 Angie's list companies to bid on finishing the basement. The people/companies he used were of the highest quality. We would use Rick (and his subs) again...in a heartbeat!

Of the three bids we received, Rick's was the highest. We chose him because he seemed more honest, capable, and communicative than the others. We don't miss a penny. If we paid more, we paid for quality.Rick is the contractor you hope for but rarely find. We purchased our home with its 1950s bathroom and kitchen and 100-year-old electrical. On the date of closing, we handed Rick the keys to the house and went on a two week trip. We were never worried. He was in constant communication, updated us weekly (at least, more often when needed), and did a beautiful job. The job took 3 months total, and we were involved every step of the way. We met with sub contractors, and Rick dealt with any hiccups along the way. He guided us through the appliance purchase process, and he took care of landscaping and maintaining our house (we didn't live there during the remodel), even getting our mail and watering the yard. He and his lovely wife even cleaned the house and left us a housewarming gift when we moved in. I now have my dream kitchen, a gorgeous bathroom, and a beautiful home. The house is old, and we have a toddler. Rick is a lead safe contractor (one of the reasons we chose him), but he really went above and beyond in keeping our little one safe. Apart from following lead safe protocol, he identified potential risks in our home and took care of them. For example, he mentioned the paint on our vents was breaking down and offered to vacuum and clear coat them with our approval. He also helped us identify eco-friendly products with his subs for use in our home. His billing procedures and descriptions of work are clear, detailed, and timely. The format is easy to understand and transparent. I never wrote a check without knowing exactly what I was paying for, and I feel like I got my money's worth. Lien wavers were signed and delivered at the time of payment. Raul (his project manager) takes great pride in his work (which he does beautifully), and is really just a nice, stand up guy. We never look at our remodeled kitchen or bathroom and think, "Man, that was such a pain." We just enjoy living here. We will never call anyone else to do work on our house. If Rick is booked, then the project will wait for him.
Description of Work: Rick served as the general contractor for our major home remodel. We updated all of the electrical systems (service upgrade and wiring) and fixtures, gutted and completely modeled the kitchen and full bathroom, painted & drywalled in various parts of the house, cut down a huge tree, and replaced all appliances. I am probably forgetting some things... This was a big job.

We are quite pleased with the result. We have two decorative, but very strong planter hooks that have been attached beneath the gutters, but directly to a beam. So we expect that next summer we'll be able to hang larger planters without fear. Rick came up with an excellent design solution and installed it in less than 2 hours. Cleaning the gutters took another hour.
Description of Work: Larson Builders hung two decorative hooks onto our newly-refurbished porch so we could hang large flower pots on either side of our front door. Since they had just re-sided the outside of our porch and overhang, we were all anxious that these hooks not damage the new vinyl. But we also wanted to be able to hang quite large and heavy flower pots from the hooks. In addition to this job, Larson Builders cleaned leaves from our gutters for the season.

Rick, the owner of Larson Builders, is fantastic to work with. He was flexible, very professional and always avaiable whenever we had a question. He and his crew did a wonderful job transforming our old and nasty basement into an enjoyable playroom for our kids and us. It's a money well-spent. We would definitely recommend Larson Builders to our friends and neighbors who need a contractor.
Description of Work: Rick and his crew did a wonderful job transforming our old and nasty basement into an enjoyable playroom for our kids and us. We learned about Larson Builders from Angie's List. Right after the call, Rick, the owner, quickly responded and came in for measurements. We also had two other contractors came in for measurements and gave us the quote, but by far, Rick is the most likable, professional and seems to know what he's doing and making recommendations right away. Unfortunately, something happened with his phone and he lost his pictures, so he had to come in taking pictures again causing a little delay in delivering the detailed proposal. We decided to go with Rick in the end because of the good report from Angie's list, our own experience with him and his proposal. Everything went as planned mostly and they got it done right before Thanksgiving which really make our Thanksgiving party a blast. They moved one wall to enlarge the playroom, put up new drywells, painted, new lighting and entertainment electrical system and new flooring and open up the entryway to the basement. They cleaned up after the job done each day and helped disposal some of the trash. Rich even helped moving the TV and entertainment center down from our 2nd floor down to the basement on the last day.

Our contractor, Rick Larson, is a delight to work with. He provided us with an incredibly detailed bid, discussed changes and additions with us as needed, and kept us up to date on the work schedule. I always felt I knew what was going on and had plenty of information about what had been discovered as layers in our old house were removed and work plans changed. Rick, his assistant (Raul), the painters (Dixon Drywall), Bortz Masonry, Twoie Gallagher (floor refinisher), and the electrician (Brent Yauchler) are skillful and careful craftsmen. Rick's excellent work wrapping windows with custom-bent aluminum resulted in a truly beautiful presentation; his ability to bend aluminum might fairly be described as an art form. Raul built a beautiful set of banisters and railings. The painters were perfectionists in their work. We were very lucky that the porch's painted wood floor had escaped water damage during its lifetime and were pleased at the gorgeous results when the floor was sanded down and varnished. We could hardly believe our porch had been transformed into such a show piece. I used to be embarrassed that guests had to enter our house through a "junk room," but now I'm proud to show off a really lovely entrance to visitors. At the same time work proceeded on our porch, another large house down the street was being renovated. All work on its exterior -- sanding, repainting, window replacement -- was done within three days. In comparison, the work on our porch took about 3 weeks. I was pleased that the work on our house was being done with greater care and expect that the more careful and skilled work on our house will stand up to weather and time. We've done two other major renovations on our house, one upstairs and one downstairs (both inside), but this one was most visible to our neighbors. Frequently, when I or my partner were outside and neighbors walked past, they would compliment us or the workers on how beautiful the porch looked. People driving past in cars would sometimes stop and make comments on how much they admired the changes we had made.
Description of Work: Larson Builders renovated our front porch: outside, inside, top and bottom. Since lead paint was found on both the exterior and interior of the house, all demolition and building was done according to State and Federal lead-safe practices. Inside: Workers completely removed all existing interior paneling, cove molding, and carpeting. After the paneling was removed, we discovered wood siding on what had formerly been the exterior of the house, but was now the inside of the porch. The siding had to be removed in preparation for installation of drywall. Old electrical (not to code) wiring was removed and new electrical outlets and switches were installed, along with new new lights, baseboard heaters, and a ceiling fan. Douglas Fir floors were sanded down and stained. All painted window and door frames were repaired, sanded and repainted. 1/2" drywall was glued and screwed onto walls and painted. Wood ceiling was repaired and painted. 9 new windows were installed. A new main front door and storm door were installed, which involved tricky carpentry work to adjust the jams of the non-standard door frame and rebuilding of a rotted threshold. All wall stud and window cavities around the 3 outside walls were insulated. A custom-made bench with safety/lift assist shocks was installed along one side of the porch, to contain recycling bins and provide seating. Underneath: In 2010, Larson Builders had replaced rotten timbers underneath the porch (in a small basement beneath the porch that used to be a coal bin, but we called the "dungeon"). The porch had been sinking and pulling away from the main house, but this repair corrected this problem and leveled the porch floor. The timbers were replaced with cinder blocks. In this current renovation, Larson Builders completed work on the dungeon by filling joist cavities under porch with fiberglass insulation and installing fiberglass foundation cover outside the dungeon, and grading dirt to prevent water drainage into the dungeon. They also installed a custom-made Azek board dungeon door with hinges and padlock. Outside: Bushes that grew next to the house were removed The old sidewalk to the street, steps up to the house, and stoop (all concrete) were removed and replaced with new concrete sidewalk, steps and stoop. Treated wood railings (of Larson's special design) were installed on both sides of the staircase. All vinyl siding was removed to expose framing, house wrap insulation and rubber flashing was installed. Windows were wrapped with custom-bent aluminum; Miratec trim board and vinyl corners were installed. Overhang and gutters were repaired. 6 new sets of shutters were installed. As a finishing touch, they installed new house numbers, mailbox and curtain rods.

Rick Larson, the owner of Larson Builders, was responsive to all of our questions and needs during the pre-contracting phase, and advised us as to what he would be doing, and what additional work might be needed once he had demolished the existing soffit to see what was inside. His pricing was very fair, and clearly delineated how any extra work would be handled if it was needed. He came in, exactly on the scheduled date, and demolished the soffit, after setting up appropriate screens so that the mess would be contained within the work area (a very important step, since my wife is very allergic to dust). After Harker removed the existing ducts and installed the new ones, Rick's crew came back to install the new soffit system. He also arranged for a local insulation contractor to install the desired insulation material around the new ducts and for a local drywall installer and painter to complete the new soffit. Afterwards, Rick made sure that everything was cleaned up (cleaner than it had been before the work started) and items that had been moved were moved back into place. All of the work was done when he said it would be done and was done professionally and competently. Those Rick hired to install the insulation, to do the dry wall installation and to paint the finished work were all also professional and competent. At every step of the way, Rick asked if we had any questions as to what had been done and what was going to be done. When the job was complete, Rick asked if there was anything he could have done to improve the performance of the work, and I searched hard but had to reply, "No, there was nothing he could have done better." My wife and I have done several remodeling projects over the years, in several cities, and none had gone as smoothly or as satisfactorily as this one. This is the first time we have worked with Larson Builders, but would definitely consider doing so again.
Description of Work: In connection with installation of a zone heating/cooling system by Harker Heating and Cooling, we needed to demo the soffit containing the existing ducts in the basement and rebuild the soffit after the new ducts were installed. After consulting with other contractors, and obtaining estimates for at least one other, we chose Larson Builders to do this work.

We were very pleased with the outcome of the work. Rick gave great suggestions, was responsive to our requests, worked well with subcontractors and was fun to work with. He managed the project to limit the time we were without our kitchen. The overall time to complete the project was less than 1 month - much less than other quotes that we received.
Description of Work: Kitchen remodel including cabinets, flooring, countertops, paint, plumbing, electrical and trim work.

Rick did a fantastic job from start to finish. He was very professional and gave an itemized estimate before beginning any work. I was able to make adjustments as needed throughout the remodel. I was kept informed about the work every step of the way and met with each individual sub-contractor that was arranged through Larson Builders. There was excellent attention to detail and the kind of results I was looking to achieve. Rick is respectful of your time, your budget and your home. My only hesitation in recommending him is that he may not be available when I need him for my next project!
