Jewelers Workshop

Jewelry Sales/Design/Repair, Appraisals - Antiques/Jewelry/Items

About us

The Jewelers Workshop started out as a mall cart on the UW Library Mall in Madison in 1969. Since then it has moved several times. We specialize in custom making jewelry exactly like our clients ask us to make it. We take their ideas, turn them into sketches, turn those sketches into wax models and then turn those models into jewelry. Our sales staff is non-commission based and our bench jewelers often talk directly with the clients to assure we have a firm understanding of their desires. If a client wants an idea our jewelers, our artists are always excited to come up with something new. The head of our repairs department, Johnny, has been with us for 30 years and is honest about what he can repair and also about what he should repair. Lately we have been working a lot with gold and gemstones that people bring in and want to fashion into new jewelry. This could include either grandma's diamond for a new wedding ring or jewelry that has been sitting in the back of a drawer for 10 years. We have a wide selection of diamonds and other gem stones but if we don't have it in stock, we are happy to order it for you. We do not limit ourselves to diamonds (or the expensive rocks). If you really want us to (and we judge it to be possible), we can fashion a rock you found onto a beach into jewelry. Thanks, Jason

Great! The wedding ring turned out awesome. There was a nick in the ring and engraving on the inside, and after resizing the nick disappeared and the engraving was still perfect. The second job was using an old ring with some gems to create a slide for an omega necklace. Rab discussed our desires and then created three designs for us to consider. My husband and I agreed on one and Rab did a plastic mold for us to look at, and when we approved made the final slide. We are very happy with the result.

I brought two gold rings to Jewelers Workshop to be resized on March 29 and picked them up when notified on April 14. One, a custom ring, needed to be enlarged from size 6.75 to 7.75 and was to be cut and have gold added. The other, a simple wedding band, made by Cartier, needed to be enlarged from 7.25 to 7.65 and was to be "stretched a bit." My main complaint is that the Cartier hallmarks stamped into the wedding band were removed in the process, although I had said I wanted to keep all the markings. According to Cartier, these hallmarks were impressed into the ring in France at the time the ring was made, and wouldn't have come off in normal use. My other complaint is that the seam where the custom ring was enlarged was not cleaned or polished smooth when I picked it up. There was a noticeable groove and a red ink mark at the enlargement spot. This was corrected when I pointed it out. My final complaint is that I think the price was excessive.

Response from Jewelers Workshop
I worked with the member when she brought the rings in for resizing originally and was called down from the shop when she picked up the rings. I have only briefly discussed the sizing with the jeweler who preformed the work and will talk to him about it again when I see him on Tuesday. I did, however, want to respond and apologize. Our prices are based on the amount of gold and labor involved in preforming the repair task. Both rings were higher karat gold (a little more expensive) and a bit wider (also adding into the cost). I quoted her the estimate when she dropped of the rings to be sized. Our prices start at $45 to size a 3mm wide ring down, to size up the 18k gold rings we charged $77 each. We have worked hard to assure all repair prices are known before work starts whenever possible. For me the troubling aspect of the member's posting is about our workmanship and service. I will do what I can to improve it for future customers and also see if there is any way to satisfy the member. I would like to address the custom ring first. During inspection following the repair, I saw that a crack was exposed during the sizing. I marked it with a red sharpie to indicate where a repair needed to be made with the laser welder. Somehow this touchup work was not done and the member was called. I can't say how this ring went to the call pile before the touchup work was done. This should NEVER happen. It somehow did and I am very sorry. We always have a bench jeweler on call at all times and we were able to finish that repair in only a few minutes. Regarding the Cartier domed band; I was unaware of the external markings. I personally inspect most of the jewelry when it comes in for repair and after repairs are made. At no point did I notice the exterior markings. Both the jeweler who preformed the sizing and I made notes of all engravings on the interior of the band but, we both failed to notice the exterior marks. We took care to insure that the interior engravings were not damaged during the sizing. I called the jeweler at home and asked him about the exterior markings. He said he didn't remember seeing them either. When the member came to pick up the rings I spent several minutes trying to find the markings and was unable to do so under the microscope. I would rather not speculate on what happened to the markings because I am at a complete loss. Had we noticed them, we would have made every effort to return them to her in the condition in which she dropped them off. I am deeply sorry that the custom ring was not finished when she picked it up and I will make sure that all of us at the workshop work extra hard in the future to identify any and all hallmarks. When the member picked up the rings they fit a bit snuggly (it was a warm day and she had been outside for a while). I double checked the sizes on the ring mandrel. While the sizes were correct, I told the member that she should bring them back in if they weren't fitting correctly. I wish we could run a business where we never made mistakes and where no mishaps happen. I will follow up with the member, to see if there is anything we can do to help further rectify the situation.
