It went very, very well. Patrick always promply returned our phone calls. He is willing to work around the homeowners schedule. He volunteered to work through a weekend to get the job done. Prior to committing with Patrick and actually starting the job, Patrick stayed in touch with us, and as our date got closer, he coordinated the actual start date and explained how the project would unfold.
Description of Work: I cannot say enough about how good Patrick is. Actually, he is so good and has such a well regarded reputation, that he schedules new projects out about six months. The quality of his work is well worth the wait! I appreciate the fact that he is a well rounded handyman, and can do some plumbing work, and some electrical work, in additional to general handyman services. We remodeled a half bath, off of the master bedroom, and Patrick installed a new vanity, new countertop, new wall cabinets, lights, and tile floor. In that I was getting the house ready for selling, Patrick did everything within his power to keep expenses and cost to a minimum.

Prompt in arriving, gave a thorough estimate, and did a good job explaining everything. We didn't go with him due to time constraints. We decided as well we are going to do more expansive work, so we will consider him in the future.

Patrick was exactly on time, both for the bid and the work. The job ended up being a little more work than initially expected although the bid was held. He did very nice work and used good quality materials, no cheaping out on 2x4's and such. He used good carpentry practices with no shortcuts. My home was cleaner after he was done compared to when he started. He was cool.

He was very polite and nice. He showed a lot of interest in our project. He was quick to respond. He got back to me right away whenever I contacted him about something. He gives good suggestions about where to look for products and ideas. He seemed to be really straight with us. I felt he was very honest about things and willing to listen to our ideas. We are scheduled to use him for our project in the future.
Description of Work: Patrick Doherty of Happy to Help Home Improvement is an artist! He did a wonderful job transforming our kitchen. We are very pleased! Patrick removed old counter tops, sink and garbage disposal. He built new counter top base, tiled with 14" granite tiles and then tiled the backsplash with with 4" slate tiles, grouted and sealed. He was very attentive to what we wanted and creative in dealing with unusual situations. The backsplash tiles we picked are natural stone and not perfectly uniform in size, shape or thickness, but Patrick was able to adjust as he went along. The backsplash has texture and adds interest, but does not appear crooked as you might expect with uneven tiles. One section of our counter top is wider than the rest. He was able to create a design with the granite tile that looks absolutely wonderful without throwing the alignment out of whack with the rest of the counter. Patrick installed a new sink, faucet and garbage disposal, and reconfigured the drain to align correctly underneath. We are so happy with our new kitchen! But in addition to having gotten the results we were hoping for, we also are so glad to have found such a great guy to do the work! Patrick is very pleasant to work with, flexible, listens to what you want, cleans up at the end of each day, keeps you updated on what he's doing and why. I trusted him completely. We will definitely hire him for our next remodeling job!

From the beginning Patrick was concerned with our comfort and ability to live within the chaos of remodeling. Patrick was enthusiastic about our project from the day we met him for an estimate. He took a personal interest and was available long before we started work and any money had changed hands. In fact, Patrick worked close to forty hours for us before we even saw a bill-that we requested. He is very easy to have around. He always made an effort to clean up at the end of the day and was apologetic for what we deemed to be normal remodel mess. He had many great ideas that we incorporated and he always took the time to think through what would be best for the final vision that we had for the space. This personal touch is rare and why it is worth waiting for Patrick's schedule to open up. His hourly rate is extremely reasonable. We had no concerns leaving him alone in our home. He enjoyed changing our space as much as we enjoyed having it changed which is much more than we expected. The connection we made with him has added to our enjoyment of the space since completion. It is exactly as we envisioned done by a professional craftsman who made the whole experience an enjoyable memory. He was agreeable to our helping out with demolition & clean up. We were welcome to do as little or as much as we wanted. He was part of the team and not the leader or boss. Once the job was nearing completion it was obvious that it was running over time-wise. Patrick re-figured the final bill and took a deep cut on his labor. This was unexpected and appreciated. It is a beautiful space done with impeccable attention to detail and worth every penny and every minute of the 5+ weeks it took! We found him to be professional yet laid-back, knowledgeable without being condescending(we felt free to ask the dumb questions) and patient beyond belief. He really is as good as it gets and anyone smart enough to wait for him to be available will not regret the choice.
Description of Work: Let me begin by stating that it won't be quick to schedule Patrick but it is totally worth the wait. He responded very quickly from the first email request for an estimate to completion of our project.Patrick did a total remodel on our bathroom which included moving a wall 9" and turning two former hall closets into a shower and linen closet for the new space. This project was huge in scope(8/31-10/8/2010) and began with Patrick setting up a temporary shower in the basement for us. The bathroom was totally gutted and everything removed. He re-framed, dry-walled, tiled and installed everything. He built a space for our drop in whirlpool tub as well as a new free standing shower next to it and did all plumbing as well as tile. He laid new tile flooring, mosaic tiles to one wall and framed in a mirror. He also installed a mosaic trim around the room, built a new linen closet as well as laundry chute and installed glass blocking. He painted walls and stained the door and trim around the laundry chute. He installed the vanity and top, cabinetry and hardware. His referral to The Tile Store was appreciated as well. We bought under his name and received 25% off and were able to purchase by the piece/tile rather than the case. They also allowed returns on everything that was unused which Patrick assured us is quite rare in the business. Once purchased, they kept the tile until Patrick needed it and he picked it up and brought it to our home. It couldn't have been easier. The price we paid Patrick broken down includes all materials, supplies & trip fees=$2,480 & labor=$6,643. We purchased all tile/grout, vanity, vanity top, shower pan, whirlpool tub, faucets/systems for sink, tub and shower, exhaust fan and paint. Patrick made himself available for consultation many times before the job began and since completion he has responded just as quickly to any questions or concerns we've had.

Pat is easy to communicate with either by email or phone. He'll get back to you almost immediately. He has brought all the tools he needs and is willing to get any additional products of your choosing. I like the way he gives any suggestions or answers questions about the most practical and economical way to do a project. He has done some extra things after completing the first job, i.e. hang some pictures, with my directions for where and how. I just had to ask if he had the time. He almost always does or makes an appointment in the near future. I would definitely have him back.
Description of Work: Finished taping and mudding all the ceiling seams in the garage. The work was done well and took a short time. He listens to what is wanted at the time and the intended goals for the future of the area he is working on. He has been very gracious in his interactions, punctual, and honest. The experience he has for home projects are of a wide range and he enjoys his work. Very nice cleanup as well.

It was actually one person, the owner that did the work. He was great. I thought he was a bit easy to work with. He was very professional and reasonable, and tried to save us money when he could. He had good ideas. I was very pleased with the outcome of the work. The overall experience was a very positive one. I would rate him highly. Overall, I have had no complaints at all. As a matter of fact, we are trying to get him to do another project for us.

The project went incredibly well and exceeded the expectations of two very picky people. We've worked with Patrick on various small projects (moving a closet wall, painting, light and fan replacement, etc.) for the past year, and when we decided to redo our bathrooms, it was a no brainer to ask Patrick to help. He's incredibly sharp, works quickly, and is friendly and down-to-earth. From the beginning, we knew that we had pretty ambitious plans - moving the water wall, building a custom shower, installing a larger tub, etc. Looking back on the project now, we couldn't have done it without his advice. Patrick guided us through the project planning stage (many e-mails back and forth over the months leaing up to the project), and worked with us during the project to make sure that we were on top of everything that needed to be done. He demolished the old bathrooms, helped us to coordinate with contractors for steps like re-routing the pipes, took down the old water wall and rebuilt it (and the walls for the new shower), waterproofed, handled all of the tile work (full shower, floors and tub surround), painted and texturized the walls, and installed all of the new fixtures. Our bathrooms are better than we hoped they would be, and we know who we have to thank. Especially when you're investing in a project of this scope, getting things right the first time is a priority. Patrick never gave us any cause for concern, and some of his design suggestions are now our favorite parts of the bathroom. His tile work is beautiful - we've had all sorts of friends and family over and anyone thinking about remodeling has asked for Patrick's contact info. Overall though, what we appreciate most about Patrick are some of the intangibles that set him apart from others. We can always rely on him to give us the straight answer - e.g. whether our ideas are feasible, whether something is worth the money, etc. And whenever we get stuck, he's always working with us to come up with a solution - it's never a straight "no". Instead, he helps us come up with alternatives. Working with him is a breeze and despite all of the upheaval a project like this causes, we found ourselves missing him once the project was over. We recommend him to anyone looking to tackle home improvement projects.
Description of Work: Complete remodel of two adjacent bathrooms Gutted and demolished existing bathrooms, moved water wall between the two bathrooms (except the plumbing), re-constructed walls, built custom tile enclosed shower, installed vanities, toilets, light fixtures, tile floors, tile baseboards, shower heads, faucets, and cabinets, painted and textured new walls, helped coordinate work done by plumbers, electricians, and a HVAC expert, and provided design advice and guidance

Even though he didn't perform any services he was very honest with us. He said we would be better off contacting a larger operation for all the work we needed to have done. Patrick was great, and if we could give him more than an 'A', we would! We did a complete bathroom gut job. We did all of our own demolition to save some money, and then my husband worked with him for about a week. Patrick did a great, professional job and even taught us some tricks of the trade while he was at it! He tiled framed out a new medicine cabinet, recessed shelf, and put in a new ceiling fan. He drywalled, mudded, and offered to have us paint to save more money on his labor costs. The job took a little longer than expected, as it's a REALLY old house and tiny bathroom and we ran into a lot of differences in standard widths and wall movem't etc. Overall we'd literally call Patrick for anything now. He's honest and fair and if he doesn't think he can do it, he'll let you know.
Description of Work: Complete bathroom remodel down to studs: moved laundry shoot, framed medicine cabinet, built-in shelf in shower, and outside of shower, installed new ceiling fan w/ venting, electrical etc, insulated outside wall, drywalled, puddied, changed shower fixtures from two knobs to one, increased height of shower nozzle, tiled entire tub surround, tiled floor, installed medicine cabinet, toilet, and pedestal sink. Also replaced old original dining room square recessed light to a standard fixture we could hang a chaneleir(sp?) from and mudded the old opening.

We have owned several homes and have worked with many contractors. Patrick is the most considerate remodeler we've worked with. He appreciates older homes and tries to keep the integrity of the house design inmind while upgrading the home's function. He is an excellent communicator and kept us abreast of the project's progress every day. I never had to wonder 'what's happening?' as I have with other contractors. He also kept our costs down by saving a perfectly functional window. The only glitch we had was oozing floor glue (we installed composite tiles) that required multiple messy clean ups. Patrick reduced our bill by 4 hours of labor to accomodate this problem which was totally unexpected and shows how considerate he is. We will hire Patrick again. Surprisingly he was the lowest bid on this job and he was a joy to work with.
Description of Work: The laundry room in our 1960 built home was so cold that liquid laundry soap was almost solid in winter months. Patrick gutted the room reframed, insulated, sheetrocked and painted the walls. He rewired the whole room, hung a new drop ceiling and installed new canned lights. He drilled through our basement concrete and brick exterior 3 times (which I'm sure required pain meds) to install a new exterior light, reroute plumbing for a new exterior spigot and added a cable line for possible future TV/phone in an adjacent room (thinking ahead while the walls were exposed). He reframed a hidden window which he talked me into not replacing as it was in pristine condition (having been unused for all these years). He rerouted the plumbing supply lines and drains for the washer and sink. He installed new upper and lower cabinets and replaced the exterior door. He was very mindful of sealing any possible airleaks. I'm sure I'm not covering everthing he did-he basically gave us a whole new laundry room.

The project turned out great with very little drama or complication. Patrick was extremely easy to work with and understood exactly what we were looking for. We asked him to bring up any ideas he had as the project progressed, and incorporated most of them. His work was exceptional, and he seemed to have very little difficulty coming up with solutions to the inevitable problems that arise when working on an older home and was eager to find ways to help us contain costs. He even volunteered to refund part of the costs of the project because one aspect did not work the way he would have liked it to, even though it wasn't his fault. That offer was entirely unexpected.
Description of Work: Installed bathroom in basement of older house. Did everything except the plumbing, including framing the bathroom, installing insulation, drywall, and waterproof backer board. Also tiled the walls and floor, installed underfloor heating system, baseboard heater, light, exhaust fan, outlets and all eletrical wiring, interior and exterior trim, and glass block. Also built a closet on an adjacent wall.

My old back door was very drafty, making it uncomfortable to sit in our dining/kitchen area during the colder months. I asked Patrick if he could replace our back door with one of those newer Energy Star doors. He said it was no problem, asked me for a couple of measurements, and the direction the door opened. He then picked up a door for me and installed it. The install was a little tricky due to the depth of the walls, but he managed to make it work. He even put in some expanding foam to keep the drafts to a minimum. Everything went very well, and the new door has hardly a draft. It looks great, and he kept the work area clean. Patrick was very polite and professional during the whole job, and I would definitely hire him again.

Patrick was professional from start to finish. He came right on time and was prepared with a few potential fixes. In the course of looking at the problem, we realized that to get the smooth look that we wanted, we were going to need to go with a specialized bathtub refinishing company. Instead of trying to sell us on a new tub (which he could have installed for us), Patrick suggested that we call around and see what our options were. Even though no real service was rendered (outside of his professional opinion), we were so impressed with Patrick's character that we felt the need to post a report. Throughout the appointment, he was open and realistic about what he could/couldn't do for us. And even though he went out of his way to meet us early in the morning, he wouldn't accept payment for his help. We ended up going a different route this time, but when we need remodeling help in our new home, we know who we will be calling.
Description of Work: Our bathtub started to get hairline cracks on the bottom about a year ago. We found Patrick on Angie's list and asked him to take a look. Since we were planning to put our house on the market, we wanted to know whether it was fixable (rather than needing a replacement).

Patrick's "happy to help" tagline is exactly right. He helped me imagine a bathroom that looked like an outhouse--dark, soft underfoot, prone to freezing and lined with rough wood paneling--as a pleasant, trouble-free space. I relied on his expertise for fixtures, bought the tile and paint myself but left a lot to him to handle. The result is beautiful, conscientiously crafted, everything just right, all details accounted for. I couldn't be more pleased. Then after that, he confronted the dark underbelly, busted into a walled-in crawl space, and put in a heater and heat tape to keep the pipes warm. Discovering a stalactite of ice under the shower, he also figured out how to deal with that, and came back once more to make sure it was all right. I would entrust a lot to this kind and careful man.
Description of Work: Patrick did a job for me that was so small I was embarassed to ask for help--fixing a leaking tap. Then I consulted him about a moldering bathroom. He gave me a rough estimate and some advice, then a month later did a a total remodel--new sink, toilet, tile floor, paint, build shelves, put in exhaust fan, fix light, deal with frozen pipes/leaking shower.

Patrick was punctual, flexible and helpful in making suggestions for the project. He volunteered to do little "extras" like cut up the old sub floor and bag it for trash pickup. He also volunteered to haul other old construction materials to the local landfill with his own truck. He remained cheerful and helpful through out the project and is so trustworthy that I had no trepidation in letting have the run of our home during our extended absences. We checked his references and they are pretty much the same as what I have written. He moved here from Denver about a year ago and one woman we called there said she cried when she found out he was leaving.
Description of Work: Patrick is a one man remodeling service who does it all. He completely remodeled our 3 bathrooms including plumbing and electrical and installed tile floors. He installed hardwood floors in our dining, living and family rooms and repainted the walls. He installed backsplash tiles in our kitchen and put in a porcelain tile floor. He also installed our new sink and garbage disposer. He also painted the walls in several additional rooms and installed new lighting in our kitchen and sunroom. Patrick came to us with stellar references and everything they said was true. He is a multi-talented craftsman of the highest order and is so personable that he became a good friend. His prices are quite reasonable and he is absolutely reliable. In fact, I wouldn't have joined Angies list except that I thought someone this good deserves some exposure. I know he sounds too good to be true but he really is this good.
