Genesis Painting

We hired Genesis to paint the first floor of our home. Built in 1928, our home's walls are plaster and had many cracks and areas of peeling paint, not to mention several details like window frames, trim and picture railing. Genesis did a fantastic job with the painting, and our house looked like a different home when we returned after the work was finished. We were gone while the crew was painting, so I can't speak to how they behave while doing the job, but they left our house better than they found it as far as I can tell. We also really appreciated that free color consultation, and love the colors Laura helped my wife pick out. The reason I don't think I would hire them again is because of the price-they were far and away the most expensive choice by several thousands of dollars from the 4 quotes we received. We ended up going with them because we were afraid that the other painters wouldn't do as good a job, but now that we have had another excellent but not nearly as expensive painter in the house (Megna), I feel kind of silly for paying as much we did to Genesis. It was also difficult to get a hold of the guy who did the initial estimate (Jeff) once we had signed the contract, and it kind of made me feel that once they had our signatures on that contract, our satisfaction with understanding the process and being involved was a low priority. Overall, excellent workmanship, but extraordinarily expensive, and mediocre customer service.

Great - all the work done looks very good

From the initial consultation with Jeff to the color consultation with Laurie through the last day of painting, we had an exceptional experience with Genesis and I have extremely high standards. Painting an entire house at once had me feeling overwhelmed when it came to color selection. We had a very clear idea of what we wanted our home to look and feel like, but...undertones will get you every time. Laurie arrived and she was warm, easy to communicate with and very skilled. She took into account our lighting, cabinets/counter tops, furniture and future design ideas. After ~25-30 min, she presented us with her initial color selections and had a backup stack of colors. We swapped a two colors out and in approximately an hour we had all paint selections done. It would've taken me weeks to do this on my own and we'll absolutely use her again, as she has her own consultation service. For painting, we were assigned a team with Jason as the Project Manager, Pat as the main dry wall repair/prep person and Jose (Joey) as an additional team member (dry wall and paint). This team was EXCELLENT. They were friendly, professional, trustworthy in our home while we were at work and communicated consistently throughout the 8 day project. They notified us of anything they found while prepping the walls, asked questions as they worked, and also reviewed next steps with us regularly. They did a brilliant job of working around the chaos of just having moved in (e.g. boxes/stuff everywhere) and were generous in helping us remove fixtures/move items along the way. We had one bathroom color that was not ideal for us and in less than 24 hrs Laurie had sent us alternative options, we selected a new color and the walls were painted (and perfect). This was our first experience with Hallman Lindsay paint and the quality and coverage was superior to anything we'd used before from big box stores with little to no smell. The colors are beautiful and the attention to detail with painting is excellent - all of the lines are crisp and clean. At our final walk through Jason took us through paint care and also helped advise us with paint types/tools to use for our fireplace/trim which we are doing ourselves. The project price was higher than other contractors we were recommended, but we were able to take advantage of winter rates and selected Genesis due to their immediate availability in between seasons. After our experience, we will absolutely be repeat customers.

Genesis Painting was great! Eduardo and Ricardo did an excellent job in our home and their attention to detail was wonderful! We had every room in the house painted, including all ceilings and walls. We had Laurie (color consultant) come out to the house to help us pick colors and the palette she chose was beautiful! It took the 2-man crew 5 days to finish our approx 2000 sq ft home...would have taken us MONTHS! We got quotes for our job from 3 different companies, and Genesis was in the middle of the two other quotes, which included the free color consultation. We highly recommend Genesis Painting and will definitely use them again in the future, probably to have our kitchen cabinets painted. :)

The team was amazing. As they started to apply the first coat, we knew right away it wasn't the color we were looking for. Troy was awesome to work with and was very patient with us as we chose a new color. In two days, the project was complete and we had the color we were looking for. Corey and his team were very professional and friendly. It was an outstanding experience overall!

We had some trouble with our bill and the quality of work received such as original paint showing and missing caulk after the workers left. The Workers did eventually come back to fix the errors which was appreciated.  We do recommend making sure everything you are needing done is put on the proposal before work begins to avoid confusion later on and do double check the work once the workers leave.  Knowing Genesis does have a guarantee that they will come back and fix any problems is a benefit.  


 

Horrible experience.

The reason we went with Genesis was because they had good reviews and guaranteed that they would be able to start on the Monday of our closing and be done by the end of Thursday of the same week. It was agreed that Genesis would be at the house at 10AM Monday morning to start work.

At 12:30PM, I called the Genesis office because they had not arrived as of yet and I had not heard from them. The Site Manager called me back and said the office had given him the wrong number for me. He said he would be out that afternoon to prep the site and shouldn't have a problem getting done by the end of the week, but if need be, would be willing to work through the weekend to get it done. Remember that Genesis promised to have it done by end of day Thursday. They did not inform the Site Manager of this request. The Site Manager was also not informed of our paint color that we had previously provided to the office. The Site Manager did arrive Monday afternoon and prepared the area to start work Tuesday morning.

Tuesday - upon returning home from work Tuesday, the work was is process and the painters had left for the day. There were empty pop cans and chip bags through the house as well as empty sucker wrappers and used sucker sticks on the carpet in several of the bedrooms.

Wednesday - came home at lunch to review the progress of the painting. Making good progress, but noted that they had not painted behind the washer and dryer in the wash room. Since the painters were at lunch, I called the office. The office stated that the person who quoted the job should have specifically stated that they don't paint behind appliances. The person who quoted the job never stated that and it was not outlined in the proposal. That afternoon, they did finish the work and did paint behind the appliances. Upon coming home, we found that someone had had explosive diarrhea in the bathroom and we had to clean that up. There was also urine all over the toilet seats and floors in most of the bathrooms. Upon further review of their "finished" work, we found the following issues: Multiple spots in the basement with no paint on the walls (and all surfaces supposedly received 2 coats per Genesis....), edging tape was not removed from one of the bedrooms, a return vent was not replaced back on the wall, incomplete/improper patching in several spots, and other multiple spots where there was no paint on the wall (once again all surfaces received two coats per Genesis).

I contacted Genesis on Thursday morning and informed them of the issues and asked for copies of the daily check list that the Site Manager was suppose to complete (we still have not received these). I asked for someone from the office to come out to the house to review the work that was completed, and they refused. All they could offer was that the Site Manager come back to site to complete the final walk through that is standard for all Genesis work and any corrections would be made. Seeing as I had the carpet cleaners coming on Friday, I then had to take Thursday afternoon off to meet the Site Manager at the house. We blue taped the areas of concerns (20+) and they went to work correcting. Unfortunately I was rather rushed when we were doing the review and to this day, I am still finding additional issues that I am not having to repaid myself.

We hired Genesis and paid a heavy premium because of their reputation for good work and professionalism and their guarantee to have the work completed on time. Unfortunately the only thing we received was work completed on time.

To this day, I have not received any further communication from Genesis even though they stated they would follow up with me after the final walk through with the Site Manager. I have also not received a survey asking about my experience as they state they do, but I am assuming that is because they know exactly what I would be saying.

Overall, I feel Genesis did a sub-standard job preparing the walls. As part of their brochure states, they will correct wall/drywall defects before painting. All they did was fill some nail holes and started painting. I had to point out several areas on the walkthrough that they had to go back and correct, and I am still finding more issues that should have been corrected but were not. And based on the number of spots that had no paint on them, I struggle to believe that two coats were really completed, and if they really were, they were definitely not applying it as heavily as they should otherwise there would not have been spots without paint.

We are happy with the work and service. They got us on the schedule very quickly and were flexible with dates and arrival times to fit our schedule. I really appreciated the help picking colors because I don't have an eye for how a color will look in a space. At first I wasn't sure about the color choice the designer recommended, but she explained how it would look with our decor and woodwork, and we decided to place our trust in her. On the wall it is perfect, exactly what we wanted. The two painters who were here were courteous and did great work. They had a lot of woodwork to work around and quite a bit of wear and tear on the walls to patch up. There were a couple patch spots I noticed after they left that were still visible, and they were very nice about coming back to fix it so that it looks perfect.

The first crew they sent out was aweful, the 2nd crew they sent redid what the first group did.

Eduardo was great to work with. He explained what needed to be done and got the job done promptly. We were under a deadline and Genesis accommodated us. Painting was well done and they cleaned up after themselves. Wish we had done this sooner.

We had a lot of issues with them. They had to come back to redo one side of the house. To try to schedule them to come back was really hard. They would schedule a date and then they wouldn't make that date. It was always cancel, cancel, cancel. They finally had a different team come out and do it a couple of months later. It was really frustrating.

It was all good. They’re expensive. The porch paint is going to peel anyway but it’s starting to peel already. Punctuality and professionalism was good.
