I believe I've stated the results in the last paragraph.
Description of Work: Removed medium sized maple and ash tree from my back yard. The trees were either diseased or had a girdled root choking it. They also removed three Arbor Vitae evergreens in the back yard. None of this was accessible by utilizing a bucket truck boom so they had to be climbed and trimmed one branch at a time. Crew also removed an approximately 25' Austrian pine in my front yard and ground the stump. This was all accomplished in a very efficient workmanlike professional manner. The three man crew were quite congenial, worked great together, and communicated everything they would do quite well. They did a great job cleaning my yard after the tree removal.

Overall great job. They talked through what they would do, kept me informed, were thorough and careful with clean-up. Will definitely use again.

Darrell came out and did an estimate on very large oak and large maple as well as grinding some stumps. He was very knowledgeable about the different trees in the yard and how much trimming should be done. When his crew came to do the service, they were very friendly and thorough about what needed to be trimmed. I was particular about how much of the oak I wanted cut above the house and the crew came as close as they could while keeping the health of the 150 year old oak tree in mind. Crew did a great job on the large oak and maple and as well as the cleanup. They even blew off the debris on the roof and cut the wood into firewood pieces. Highly recommend and will use in the future.

This company is simply the best. They brought the appropriate equipment for the job and showed up on time. The staff knew what needed to be done and did all the work with safety in mind. Hard hats and harnessed limbs are simply standard operating procedure. This time I needed the stump ground out. Now when you look, you don't know where the tree was. All small limbs, and trim was removed completely. When they left, you wouldn't know that a tree had been cut down that day. The company is responsive and timely. Consistently, options are offered as to how best to tackle the job. Everyone on the crew is professional and when on my property, I'm confident they will do the job quickly and safely. As much as I hated to see that tree gone, I knew I called the right team to do the job right.
Description of Work: For the fourth time, I called Capital City Tree Service to remove trees. This time it was a 75 foot, dying cherry tree located in a tight spot in the back yard. They left some of the wood for firewood, as requested, and completely removed everything else.

Everything went great with Capital City Trees. Darrel came out to assess my 2 ash trees, and it was easy to see his expertise with Emerald Ash Borer. He gave me lots of background information and then printed out a proposal to treat the trees right on the spot. His proposal was the best price of the 5 contractors I had come out to assess the trees. I used a coupon from Madison Perks and that made it an even better deal. Only a couple days later, they sent a guy out to drill into the trees and administer the insecticide. It took about an hour for the 2 trees, and now my trees are protected for 2 years!

I worked with Nick mostly over the phone, but everything was excellent. He returned calls the day of, was clear on all the treatment that would be needed, and made sure I knew when and what was going to happen. He even called me back because he thought he had missed my call, but had already called me back already. The fungicide and insecticide treatment for oak wilt was the cheapest I found in Madison, and was applied within a week after I called.

I met with Darrell to receive an estimate for tree trimming. He gave me a written estimate on the spot, and I agreed with going forward with the work. The work was then scheduled for approximately 2 weeks after I received the estimate. The work crew arrived on time to perform the work which consisted of hauling away a fallen oak limb, cutting out buck thorn along my driveway, and taking out an elm tree leaning over the driveway. They chipped all the wood and took it away and cleaned up the work site.

The three person crew (Forrester, Spencer and Nick) arrived on time, introduced themselves and discussed the specifics of the job with us prior to starting work. They were friendly and conducted themselves in a professional manner. We requested, when the job was quoted, that both stumps be removed by grinding. The crew advised us that, for one tree in particular, the root system of the nearby healthy tree may be damaged by grinding the stump. We changed our minds on the stump grinding, and they cut each stump as low to the ground as possible. The second tree was in a wooded area, so that stump did not present a problem with mowing or walking over it. They subtracted an allowance for stump grinding from the final invoice. The crew did a great job of cleaning up the yard, and the equipment used for the high branches did not damage the yard. The crew was very careful, and we were especially impressed with the care taken in cutting and lowering large branches, especially ones that were very close to the house. I would suggest one area for improvement, which is to inform the customer up front what will or may happen to complete the job. Our crew did not have the equipment to grind the stumps. They explained that sometimes, a separate crew was assigned to grind stumps, and they would grind them within a day or two. This was a non-issue for us as we decided to have them ground, and it's no big deal if we did have the stumps ground; it's just something we should be told up front, on the quote. Also a minor point, but they used hand trucks to move the big trunk sections out by the road. They said someone would stop by in a day or two, with special equipment used to pick up the trunk sections and haul them away. They completed this as promised, and used a blower to remove any wood chips off our driveway after these sections were lowered. Again, this was not an issue for us, but they should inform the customer up front of these options. Overall, we were very satisfied with their services, and would definitely call them to bid on future jobs.

They quoted quickly and reasonably. They coordinated with the power company AND our neighbors. They did a lot of work in a day, leaving neatly piled firewood -as requested. They didn't tear up the lawn even as spring hadn't thawed! They painted cuts as needed and removed the scraps. This was all done professionally, timely, and at the right cost.
Description of Work: They dead limbed two bur oaks entangling power lines between my house and the neighbors. They removed two giant limbs dangerously extended and overgrown. We requested the firewood and they piled it neatly. They even helped with a scraggly smaller tree tangled between it all. The trees look great, balanced and natural.

Response from Capital City Tree Experts
We would like to caution customers about hiring tree companies by price alone. It seems like it worked out well for you on this occasion but, many times, customers fall victim to under-insured, under-equipped, and under-trained workers. Under-insured companies with poorly trained workers may be a huge liability if any damage is caused to your property or to any person while working on your property (you may be stuck with paying for damages to your home or medical bills for workers injured on your property). We encourage anyone that is looking to hire a tree care company make sure they are hiring a company that has the following qualifications; 1. Make sure they are certified Arborists; check for their certification # and verify it at the International Society of Arboriculture website 2. Ask for a dated certificate of insurance, including general liability, and most importantly workmens comp. Companies who do not have this policy can get hurt on your property and you as the homeowner can be responsible for the medical bills. Without General liability insurance, they can damage your personal property and all you will see from them is the taillights of there trucks leaving you high and dry. These policies cost 10's of thousands of dollars, and are an absolute must 3. Ask for references There are 7 more questions you should ask your tree contractor and you can find the list on our website at capcitytree.com. Employee training is very important at Capital City Tree Experts and it comes at a price, but it insures our customers are getting the most qualified people on their property. Trees are a major asset to your property and tree care operations are the 3rd most dangerous trade after logging and commercial fishing. Always make sure to hire qualified arborists to care for your trees. Thank you for your Angie's List review. Will Torgeson, President Capital City Tree Experts, Inc.

This is the second time I have used Capital City - the first for tree removal and the second time for tree trimming. These guys are the best. Everyone on the staff is kind, professional, and hardworking. I have a yard full of Elm and Oak, which can only be trimmed after the third frost. Capital City was here right before Thanksgiving and it was freezing. They went right to work, even cutting up the trimmings into fire wood for me. Darrell, one of the owners was even here helping out too. They completely transformed the look of my home - beautiful job.

Capitol City Tree Experts were fantastic. They came out super quick to perform an estimate, and performed the work a few weeks after I called to have them out. We got quotes from several arborists/tree services, and they were by the far the best priced and they did an amazing job. In order to remove a big ugly spruce from the backyard they needed to remove part of the fencing, but when they were done it looked like no one had touched it at all. Our silver maple looks beautiful now and they even left some of the birch wood neatly stacked for us after we requested some leftovers for firewood. All in all, it was a great experience and I recommend them highly.

I called for an estimate and was told up front that their backlog was about two weeks to get the estimate completed. They came out and provided a detailed estimate along with proof of liability insurance and a professional literature package of their services. I called and committed without any changes. The price was competitive and the quote was clear on what services were included. The work effort spanned two days to complete. Hit by major wind storms in the Madison area that same week, I didn't press to complete my tree service since it didn't impede or impact others. When I called as a follow up, they were here within two business days. Unlike other tree services I have used, this crew completed the job and cleaned up everything. There wasn't a twig, branch or grindings left that I had to deal with. As well, when here to finish the stump grinding, they happily took another order on the spot to grind out four other smaller stumps and promptly sent me a separate invoice. Payment was easy on the website and I was glad to pay it. I wouldn't consider calling another tree service now that I've had the pleasure to work with Capital City Tree Experts.
Description of Work: Darrell provided an inclusive estimate and his crew did an amazing job. When completed, you didn't know they had cut and hauled away two trees, each over 70 feet long. Nary a twig or grindings were left as evidence.

The first crew came out and explained what needed to be done which was very helpful. They dropped the tree and removed all the limbs and brush from our yard. Unfortunately there was some damage to our neighbors fence. They made contact with that customer and assured them repairs would be made. Storms came through in the next couple of weeks so they were delayed finishing our job until they handled the storm emergencies. I was contacted and the situation was explained to us with the guarantee they would be back as soon as possible. A second crew arrived a couple of weeks later and finished the job to our satisfaction along with fence repairs. Clean up again was amazing. I would contract with this company if any tree service is needed and would highly recommend them to anyone needing tree service.
Description of Work: Had storm damage to a large box elder tree. Decided we wanted the entire tree taken down. CCTE came out and gave us an estimate. Crews came out and removed the large tree. A second crew had to come out and remove the large stump and grind it out.

This is kind of an odd review, but the situation was kind of odd. We had a huge snowstorm in December 2012 and some branches from my huge silver maple were weighed down and resting on the phone lines. The first tree guy I called, who came out within 45 minutes just before dark (when I discovered the problem) and promised to come back the next day, never showed up and never responded to my calls. So I called Cap City. One of the owners, Will, came out the next day, on a Saturday, with a pole saw and took care of the offending branches for about $150. He could not have been nicer or more professional. The tree needed additional work but Will told me that, understandably, that work couldn't really be done until the snow and ice melted, because they would have to climb the tree to do it. That was fine, because he took care of the immediate problem. If that had been my only transaction with them, I would have given them A's in all categories and recommended them to others. But... In April, I called them back to get an estimate for the rest of the tree work. The other owner, Darrell, came out and gave me what I thought was a fair estimate. He, like Will, was nice and professional. He even had a printer in the car so he could give me the estimate in writing on the spot. I was really impressed by that and figured I had found a great company to help with my tree issues. I called back a few days later to attempt to book the job, and no one ever called back. I called several times over the course of the next few weeks, and no response. I finally called back one last time and in reply to their message that "your business is very important to us", I said, "Obviously my business is not that important to you since you haven't returned any of my previous calls. If I don't hear from you by close of business today, I will be taking my business elsewhere". No call or message. Too late, especially in the days of cell phones and being able to access voicemail from just about anywhere. So, I don't know how to rate these guys. That's why I put N/A in all the categories I could, and gave them a C overall, since I had to choose a letter for that. I was really very impressed by their initial response...coming out on short notice, on a weekend, during the winter, taking care of the immediate problem for a fair price, and then a few months later, coming back and providing a fair estimate for further work. Both Will and Darrell were very nice and seemed to know what they were doing. I don't know why they ignored my calls in the spring. I'm a nice, polite person who wanted to pay them more than a thousand dollars. No doubt they had a lot of business with spring coming on, but failing to return multiple phone calls was not impressive. So while I don't plan to use them again, I wouldn't tell other people NOT to use them. They DID do a good job with the initial problem. It was the communication about the follow-up job that was problematic.
Description of Work: Took down a couple of branches on a urgent basis (they were resting on the phone lines after a snowstorm) and a few months later provided an estimate for further work on the tree.

They were excellent. They did an excellent job. They cleaned up, you couldn't tell that they had been there and it was a muddy day. They kept it really clean, they cleaned up all the limbs, there was no saw dusts lying around, wood chips or anything. Their price was very reasonable.

The guys are great. Darrell the estimator is friendly and professional and really knows trees. They even came back the next day to grind a stump they missed. In the end he undershot his bid by about 6 hours and ended up splitting the difference with us. The only complaint and this isn't a big deal is that it took a few weeks to get the whole job done. We weren't in any hurry but I can see how that may be a problem. On the other hand when we needed a tree removed that a storm blew down they were Jonny on the spot. I assume they do the same in other emergency situations which is probably why our job took a little longer.

Capital City Tree Experts were immediately responsive to my initial inquiry for an estimate to remove some Arborvitae and some shrubs. They had an estimate to me within a day or so. I returned the estimate, accepting their offer. I never heard from them again. I contacted them a few months later, Darryl said he would call me the next day. I never heard from him. At the time of the estimate, it was late Fall 2013, and snow flew shortly after, but as a customer who accepted your offer for service, I would expect some sort of contact to let me know your intent. I never got that, which was unfortunate, because they made a great first initial impression, then it nose-dived.

Response from Capital City Tree Experts
We would like to respond to this review with a sincere apology. We have been in the process of implementing a new scheduling system and during this transition period our response times and communication have been delayed. This winter has complicated things further with multiple rescheduling required due to safety hazards related to sub-zero temperatures and windchill. This does not excuse our mistake in any way. Our primary goal is, and always will be, safety for our crew and customer satisfaction. Darrell and I sincerely hope that our new scheduling process (now fully in place) will prevent this kind of mistake from occurring in the future. Again, we hope you can accept our sincere apology. Sincerely, Will Torgeson, President, Capital City Tree Experts

The crew arrived promptly at 8:30 am and after notifying us of their arrival immediately began the task at hand. They worked on the Mulberry tree first and in relative short order had nothing but a stump remaining, with all the brush removed and the wood stacked. Next, they removed the first, the single trunk, of the two Pines and then began and finished the second Pine, the double trunk, which was extremely close to the corner of the house, by this time it was 4:30pm and we were informed that they would return in two days( due to rain forecast the following day) to remove remaining wood and grind the stumps. Once again the crew arrived at 8:30am,informed us of their arrival and very quickly finished the job and left both front and back yards looking very good, clean of brush and twigs and none the worse for wear. We are extremely satisfied with the work and would hire Capital City Tree Experts again if necessary and would gladly recommend them for anyone requiring tree services.
