My entire front yard used to be a prairie garden jungle and I wanted to convert it to a normal grass yard. In addition, I wanted several bushes and trees saved but have the rest taken down. A.L. Landscaping put in a bid that was reasonable compared to other companies and they explained in detail in advance how they would do the job. They got the job done before Memorial Day as they promised and they were able to do the whole thing in just 2 days! The grading and sod job they did was excellent and they provided me with helpful maintenance tips. They even provided me with a little extra mulch for a flower bed. Communication was great with Chuck and his team was professional and diligent. If I ever need landscaping done again I'll be sure to hire A.L. Landscaping!

It was terrible. I would never recommend this company. It took 6 weeks (!) to get this done. They did not communicate. I would call to find out why no workers were out, and get Dave, the estimator and landscape designer we were working with. He would fire excuses at me, yell and was incredibly rude. This happened repeatedly. The wall is terrible. It bulges out in spots towards my neighbor's yard and now there's this "step" in the top of the wall, that was not there at the start. They claimed they were finished. They were not. Capstones missing from a portion of the wall, and the last section of fence not installed. Dave came over and I showed him the problem. I showed him a possible solution. He once again began yelling at me, excuse after excuse. Said he'd send someone over to finish things. After a week, I finally called them and they sent out Chuck, who did not yell, explained the situation, listened to my concerns and apologized for Dave's behavior. He then worked for about 1.5 hours or so, and finished up the wall. I paid him but am left with an ugly, if not a poorly constructed wall. Do not use them.

Last fall I worked with Chuck Langfeldt with A.L. Landscaping to solve a problem with a crumbling retaining wall around my deck. In working with Chuck he pointed out that it was lack of proper drainage around and under my deck that was causing the problem, an issue I had not considered. Also, as there is a substantial slope leading to the lawn from the area around my deck, I was interested in having steps installed to mitigate that issue as well. Although I was having problems envisioning the final result of the design, I trusted Chuck and I am completely thrilled with the results. I also cannot say enough good things about Derek and his crew in implementing the design and completing the project. I would give them the highest rating.

They did a great job and achieved the objectives - albeit quite a bit more costly than I was expecting. They were able to get my hot tub in place to be hooked up on time before freezing temps and got most of the work done before the ground froze. That was the reason I went with them - because they seemed most confident that they could get done what I needed to get done - in the time frame I needed it done. (Though a couple of other vendors were a few thousands of dollars less) And they DID get it done on time! I am very happy with the quality of the work overall. Minor item - they didn't use any protection from concrete dust on my screened porch - so the screen and everything inside it i(including my futon fabric) - and it is still covered in stone sawing dust (though they tried to use a blower on it afterwards) - as is half of the back of my house (I personally hosed off the other half - and left half un-hosed off since I didn't want to create a muddy mess over there. They promised to get to cleaning the back of the house in the spring. (So I'm looking out some pretty cloudy windows in the bedrooms) An unfortunate side effect of their patio construction was that the rain water runoff from it is running across the (future grass) yard and pooling in back - so they will have to come out and "charge more money" next spring to resolve that issue - whether rain garden or some other solution. But it is better than water pooling on the patio.... They also plan on putting grass seed down next spring. Chuck was good at helping me plan without a formal plan and helped come up with the total design. He was flexible enough to understand that some things (per my preference - such as final patio shape) needed to be visualized with spray paint from my living room window - before commencing. Many vendors might have insisted on a formal plan. Chuck figured out where the extra stair steps I purchased could be used and a number of other things - as we brainstormed our way to a beautiful final result. He was even able to use some of the old sentimental flagstone in a tiny ledge terrace at the top of the hill - and you could tell that he really really cares about people and getting a good result (on time) - and what they think of the result - so he aims to please (albeit being a unnecessarily argumentative here and there) Though there were a few things that weren't quite right as things progressed - they were corrected very promptly. (such as the tread measurement of the stone stairs as they were going in that were too narrow (less that 12 inches and needed to be 16ish), plantings slightly out of line) Had I not been there - the result may have not been what I liked - but I went outside to review what was going on when it called for it - to catch a glitch to get fixed quickly before it might become a more expensive fix. Some of the guys knocked off at 2 PM on some beautiful days - and that was a bit frustrating to both Chuck and I - as the job could have been done sooner - but it still got done in pretty decent time. Overall - a beautiful job though the final bill was a bit of a shocker, and more than I expected.

I have always had a good experience. They have been on time and on budget. I have felt the pricing has been fair and the work executed well. Upon calling them back with a concern, my concern was addressed and rectified.

Very good job start to finish. Understood problem, proposed solutions,strove to ensure proper outcome.

The quality of the work was good it was explained in detail what needed to be done. They finished the job in just a couple of days and were good in cleaning everything up when they finished. The price was reasonable and it included a $200 off coupon. Shortly after the project was done we had some heavy rains which washed out some of the soil and seeding. We requested the company take a look and touch it up but was told it would cost us $100 since it was an act of nature and not their responsibility. We ended up doing that ourselves and rally thought the company missed an real opportunity of added customer service . All in all they did a good job. The water issues have been addressed.

My house is built in a hill and I have two boulder walls that were not high enough and had never been planted so I had drainage issues and mowing issues. I called for an estimate and Dave Polich came within a couple of days. I was very impressed with the three man crew led by Roger. They were personable, experienced, and worked hard and steady. I am now able to mow without fear of falling over the wall, the dirt will no longer wash out from between the rocks, and now it's planted and will be beautiful for years to come. I am extremely satisfied.

the quote was fair and thorough. they pulled permits and arranged for all inspections and finished the job in a timely fashion.

They came right away, were professional, and did nice work.

The overall installation was generally satisfactory, except for two issues. 1. Tree damage: I specifically asked Dave to not damage the existing trees located in the mulch beds that were to remain. I was very disappointed to see bark torn off from portions of 3 trees, one severely. The damage was consistent with damage that a skidsteer bucket might cause if it scraped against the trunk. Dave was not apologetic of the damage, and further refused to compensate us for the damage. 2. Weeds in grass: The new lawn did well in 2009, but contained a large amount of a fast-growing grasses mixed in the lawn. At the time I assumed this was from an annual seed in the seed mix intended to stabilize the lawn, which would not reappear the next season. In 2010, the same fast-growing species did not die off. A local nursery identified it as quackgrass, and indicate the only way to destroy quackgrass was to kill all the grass and start over. I asked Dave to provide a solution to the problem, and he did not do so.

Terrible. First we were told to send in signed contract in order to get on the schedule. We did, along with more than a 25% deposit (they require 20%) in late May. They deposited the check and we didn't hear from them. We initiated every single phone conversation. We expressed concern about having grass grow in time for a Sept wedding. After calling several times Dave told us it would happen late in the 2nd week of June or early the 3rd week. By the end of the 3rd week still hadn't heard anything. Called Mon of the 4th week, had another experience with the extremely rude phone staff. I say that because they seem to know nothing about the jobs and simply take messages (which aren't returned). I once called, said my name and the street, the woman put down the phone and yelled to the others to ask if they knew me. She came back and said she didn't know me. She was pretty much done at that point. I had to prompt her to look up the account. Finally Dave returned the call. He said he would be here sometime Wed. When they arrived I really wanted to try to start on a better foot. The crew was nice and Dave was much more personable. They got to work and put in a great day. We even talked to them about working on the front yard as well. We were very relieved that things were going so well and figured they must just be overly busy with a poorly run office. We even asked if they would be willing to simply till the front yard for us as well. We also talked to the crew about how the soil would be formed along the edge of the backyard. This was Wed. Dave said they would be done and have the yard seeded by Fri. All seemed great. They came back the next day; again, all was great. They poured the concrete and did a bit more grading. And that was it. They never showed up Fri (didn't tell us they weren't coming). Also didn't come on Mon. At this point we are really concerned. Finally they show up on Tues. They threw some seed down, covered it with hay, and left 2 hours later. They didn't do the beds along the border that we talked about. And suddenly they decided that the front yard wasn't going to work, giving us some lame reason about grass not being able to grow there. That wasn't why we wanted the front yard done though (we're planting a garden). Then we get the bill. It has charges for the front yard that was never touched. Also charges for work that wasn't done in the backyard. (Removing some stumps from our fence. We decided, with Dave, the 1st day not to do this.) Oh, and they were supposed to leave us extra grass seed, which they didn't do, but charged us for. So we're not done having to deal with them yet. We just want to pay the bill and move on. I have seen other nice work they have done and I've read a positive review about this company on this site. I have no idea why our job went so terribly wrong. It's very upsetting.

They were excellent and I was very pleased with them. They were professional and knowledgeable. They got the job done in a timely manner. They did a great job and they cleaned up really well. I would recommend them.
