It was a great experience. I had estimates from several contractors suggested by Green Madison. His estimate was fair and consistent with the others. I selected Cellar to Attic because I felt Rich was direct and answered my questions clearly with suggestions as to which improvements recommended by the energy auditor would give us the best return on our costs. The actual work went very smoothly, he was punctual, very neat during the project and cleaned up thoroughly at the end of each day. Our house is much more comfortable and did very well on the post test by the energy auditor. We waited 3 months for the work to be done since he is so popular and the Green Madison program was ending with a lot of publicity. The wait may be less now. My wife and I felt it was well worth the wait considering the quality of the work.

When we first met with Rich we did a walk through of our 1950s tri-level home. He described the work he recommended and suggested we consider the Focus On Energy program. That led to a pretest home energy audit by Scott Sailor, very thorough, precise using an infrared camera. Throughout all the insulation that Rich installed, he did an extraordinary job on everything - including the whisper quiet bath fans. The post-test done after completion confirmed much improvement due to the air sealing that had been done. Both Rich and Deb were very helpful throughout the entire project. I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Installed blown in cellulose R-60 in attic, 2" foam to walls, floor and sills in crawlspace, dense pack cellulose in garage ceiling, spray foam to basement sills, knee-walls and kitchen vent, 2 new bath fans w/ humidistat and motion sensor, sealed top plates, plumbing, electric, bath fans, chimney chase in attic, built retaining wall for attic hatch and air sealed to R-50.

I hired Rich through the Green Madison program. He was really helpful in understanding the building codes for insulation in the attic, which I was also renovating into a master bedroom. He did the work quickly in two phases: outside walls and then attic. His prices were very reasonable and he even matched a bid from another larger insulation company. He and his wife were easy to work with and helped with all the necessary paperwork too.
Description of Work: Insulated attic joists/walls to R-40 with spray foam, cellulose and rigid foam insulation. Blew in cellulose insulation in exterior walls. Sprayfoamed basement sill boxes.

Getting the time scheduled to get the quote was a little tricky, but he once he came out, the quote was provided promptly. We did not end up going with them due to receiving a better price elsewhere but would consider in the future.

I had several larger companies come out and bid this job. Rich had very good Angie's List reviews and his bid came in slightly lower than his competitors. Rich performed the bid and completed the work by himself. The work was outstanding. My air leaks were reduced from 1500 cfm to 500 cfm (that was confirmed by a third party). I can already tell my house does not heat up on warmer days like it used to...looking forward to a cozy warm house next winter!

What a pro. He called right back to schedule the bid tour. His bid on this Green Madison project focused on our two priorities: (a) provide the most noticeable comfort improvement and energy savings and (b) reduce the amount of ice dams. His project plan also addressed our expressed desire to do it right, not just the cheapest way. When asked what he would do if it were his home, he included both cost and quality as part of his response. For example, instead of punching holes and forcing in the insulation, we ended up pulling the drywall off some interior walls to make sure we could see where the insulation was going to end up rather than just guessing. He worked closely with the roofing contractor to assure they both scheduled a safe window of time to have the roof open to the elements. This was a key aspect of the project. It's hard enough to get one contractor scheduled, but even with two contractors on this project, there were no scheduling headaches. We always knew when he was coming and going. Work started on time and the project was completed within the project window. He is pretty much an insulation geek in every good way that could mean. He worked soooooo h****** our home. Best of all, our house is noticeably less drafty, and based on recent the snows, the new insulation has made a significant impact on heat loss through the roof. We're happy. Hire him. You will be happy, too. What a pro.
Description of Work: Insulate flat roof, sloped roof and knee wall areas in a cape cod-style home. Knee wall work included remove and reinstall drywall panels. Roofing work included coordinating with the roofing contractor to assure roof areas are open to the elements for as short a window as possible. Inspect and and adjust four exhaust fans and associated duct work. Also apply spray foam to exposed basement sills and install LED light fixtures.

This is a local, husband and wife team. Rich does the insulation and his wife does all the scheduling and billing. They are both very helpful, concerned about doing a good job and wanted us to be happy. They even applied for the rebated for us from Focus on Energy and deducted it from our bill. This was especially appreciated because we are "buried" in renovation tasks and short on current cash flow.Rich has new equipment and cleans up very well after each step he does. Renovation is never easy, but Rich made this step quite painless for us. We would highly recommend him.
Description of Work: We had gutted our upper level living area and Rich sprayed in 5" of closed cell spray foam in the entire ceiling as well as all the box sills in the lower level. He also installed dense pack cellulose in all the walls in the upper level.

This job took about 3 days, and I'm sure Rich was completely exhausted at the end of each day because he worked so hard. The results have been noticeable in how much more comfortable the house is now. When Rich came to give an estimate, we asked him a question about the original energy assessment and one of the recommendations in it. He knew immediately and exactly why the recommendation was given and what would happen if we didn't follow it. His explanation was completely understandable; he's a real pro at understanding how a house uses energy and the importance of how air sealing, insulation, and ventilation work together as a system, but more importantly, he's able to explain it to people (like us) who have never dealt with this stuff before. When Rich gave his estimate, he did not realize that the eave over the garage door was completely wide open to the outside - no insulation at all! (There was no way to know about it beforehand - no one else had known that it was open, either.) He went ahead and blew insulation in anyway, even though he hadn't included it in his bid (we asked him to be sure that he included the cost in his final bill, though), and he came up with a better way of insulating the crawlspace, and asked if it was OK to go slightly over his original estimate since it would cost more, but would give a much better result. The marginally extra cost has been well worth it in the long-term comfort we'll have. Not only was he extremely thorough in completing the job, but we were also very comfortable with having him around the house. In fact, the only disappointment we have is that we are not likely ever to have this work done again so we won't have another opportunity to hire Cellar to Attic. Every aspect of the experience was very positive, and we would not hesitate to recommend Rich and the quality of his work.
Description of Work: Through the Green Madison program, we learned that our garage might as well have been wide open to the outdoors - in fact, in some ways, it was. We learned that we also had other air sealing and insulating improvements we could make. We hired Rich and Cellar to Attic, and Rich did a phenomenal job of insulating the garage ceiling, first putting up foam board and then blowing in insulation, in addition to insulating the wall between the house and the garage, insulating all the basement sills, insulating and sealing a crawlspace, air sealing the attic, insulating the attic, and building a storage platform and a new hatch around the dropdown staircase, complete with insulated cover

Cellar to Attic, owned by Rich Buchli, performed the follow-up work on our residence in March 2010 resulting from our Focus on Energy home performance evaluation. Some of the work they did included re-venting and replacing the upstairs bath fan, adding insulation in the attic, insulating the basement sill boxes, and insulating the crawl space underneath our dining room. Our home was already pretty well insulated before the job, but even so, our follow up blower door test showed a 200 cfl improvement. What's more is that the work was done promptly and for a reasonable cost, and work on the bath fan revealed a defect that caused over a gallon of water to build up over the ceiling in the bathroom, which would have caused serious damage if left unchecked. At the end of the day, we were only charged about $2000 total for materials and labor for this job by Cellar to Attic, and we will be getting around $900 back in rebates from Focus on Energy for making our home more energy efficient. Because the work on our residence was so successful, we hired Cellar to attic again to insulate our rental home. Rich fixed a serious issue with the bath fan there, added insulation in the attic and basement (sills), and generally worked to make this old leaky house more efficient. This job cost us $3,700, but it will qualify for FOE rebates, save on energy costs and encourage the great tenant we currently have not to move out of our property. I would definitely recommend hiring Cellar to Attic for any insulation or ventilation work you have. They are enthusiastic about their business, top of the line when it comes to knowledge about energy efficiency, and they will do the job you hire them to do at more than a fair price.

I'm very pleased with the results of this project. Our house was extremely drafty and performed terribly on an energy audit. After this project, energy audit results greatly improved (plus we can feel the difference). Best of all, no ice dams or other nastiness this winter.
