We contacted several companies for estimates for our interstate move. Although Jacobson's wasn't the lowest estimate, we chose them over some other local movers because they represent a national company and had experience with long distance moves. After a representative toured our house and we discussed our moving preferences they provided an estimate of $8500 for a full service move, which was largely based on weight and distance to our new house. In the past we have had moving companies provide low estimates and later present a bill much higher than the estimate. Therefore, since the bill would be based on weight we donated many items to Goodwill and also threw away or gave away many heavy or bulky items between the time of the estimate and the moving date in order to ensure the bill would not exceed the estimate. The day of the move arrived and the movers were professional enough although they were late each day. After the truck was packed and on the road we received notice that our bill would exceed the estimate by $2000. Naturally, we complained and asked for rationale - particularly since we tried to minimize the weight and volume of our belongings after the estimate was provided. The rationale provided was that the original estimate was too low and that there was some miscommunication between the person providing the estimate and the front office - but that we are still responsible for the total bill because of some fine print in the contract we signed after the truck was loaded. After many complaints by email and phone calls and some negotiating, they reduced the cost by $500. Unfortunately, this is still $1500 more than the original estimate despite our best effort to avoid this scenario. We were very dissappointed in our decision to hire Jacobson's Moving.
