deck cleaning

Description of Work: Cleaned and sealed our deck, which is about 20 x 20 feet with lattice work on each side. We had someone else stain the deck a few years earlier, but the stain does not last very long. Phil came out to do the estimate, which is basically a price per foot. We had our work done in the fall, since they were running year end specials at the time. Danny was the person who did our deck. He was on schedule, friendly, and worked very efficiently. He finished the entire process in about 3-1/2 hours. Their product works from the inside of the wood to seal it. We did not have the deck stained, which was an additional charge, but it still looks great, especially compared to how it looked before. The 30 year warranty is for the sealer, but they do recommend cleaning at least once per year. They offer an annual cleaning for about $300, which is done in the spring. I was concerned about having the work done just before winter, so he offered a free cleaning in the spring to help my decision. UPDATE-8/2011-I tried contacting them in the spring to get my free cleaning. When I tried the phone number it was disconnected. I was disappointed and figured I was out of luck. A month or so later, I heard ads on the radio for SealWisconsin (same name but without the US). When I heard the ad again I wrote down the website. Much to my surprise, the website was almost identical to the one from the year before. The address was changed but it was very close to the prior location. When I called the new number, I was told that this was a different company, but that they would come out later in the week to look at the deck and see what they could do. My intent was to hopefully work something out and then do the annual cleanings in future years with them. We were out of town when they were supposed to come out, but I never heard back from them. I called again a couple of weeks later and was given the same story. I never heard back from them that time either. At that point, I figured I would give up and go elsewhere when needed. I won't be surprised to hear them advertising again next year under another new name. A 30 year warranty sounds great, but it's not worth much when the company isn't around a year later (or is around but works under a new name). Buyer beware!

deck cleaning
+ -1 moreThe cleaning was begun when the employees found they could not clean our deck with the stain that had been applied previously. They had done a very small area and had to stop and not continue. Because they did not prepare the work area completely, some of the stain splattered onto our siding. He did bring it to our attention, told us we would receive a phone call and left. We did receive a phone call but were unable to connect with the gentleman until I finally called the owner of the business. When we notified Christine of the problem, she wasn't aware of the total situation, she immediately sent out their professional painters to assess our problem. They were surprised at the damage that was caused and remedied the situation right away. They repainted our siding on the side of the house where the damage was. They did the entire side of the house, not just repainting the stained parts. They did a fantastic job, and were very apologetic for the damage. They looked at the porch and told us that to do the job correctly, the cedar should have been sanded and properly prepped for the job which would have added to the cost of the work. Had I known this sooner, I probably would have gone in that direction right from the start to have the job totally completed. There was no problem in getting our refund of the down payment. Christine and her husband Phil were very nice people to deal with. As far as the original job that would have been done, Phil was punctual to come and give the estimate and Christine was a wonderful person to deal with on the telephone and was very helpful in getting the situation remedied. I believe I would have been satisfied with their work had I known that they would have had to sand the porch in order for the job to be done correctly. They do have a good reputation, as they also seal cement and do graffiti removal. So I would tell other people to check them out and decide on their own to contract them for a job.
Description of Work: Job would have been to clean and seal a small 2nd story cedar porch. Could not be completed.
