Work was supposed to be completed by June 1. (Unfortunately, It hadn't even started at that time.) We were given "bid specifications" detailing work to be completed and the cost. Later we were given additional bills for hourly wages of $85.00 (including time spent in the car!) never addressed at the time of acceptance of bids/employment. The island was actually built backward from the drawings that Carol had given us and when it was delivered to be installed the mistake was realized and it had to be taken back to the shop and corrected, causing more delays and costs. Shower doors were to be installed on the bathtub and when the workers first attempted the job they were not observant enough to realize that they needed additional materials, so when they went back to finish the job they were without all they needed to install it. Further delays. In the middle of the job she asked us what we planned to do with the existing sink and countertop that were being replaced. In all other remodel jobs we have been involved in the builder has included these types of attentions in the bid. Our assumption is that either Carol did not think through the entire job process or else is just in the habit of pulling a fast one on her clients. Carol charged us several times to take measurements over and over for closet inserts and tile work giving us the impression that she really doesn't know how to measure! Her tile installers left a huge mess of grout and dried grout water all over what had been beautiful curly maple kitchen cabinets and newly painted walls. It took us several hours to clean the mess! Then we discovered that the dishwasher and garbage disposal had not been hooked up after the installation of the new sink and faucet. When we informed Carol of the mess her response was that we should have contacted her so that she could come and take care of it. She never returned to the job site when the tile work was completed to inspect it. And there was no way we were going to have her charge us an additional $85.00 and hour for her to come and clean something that should have been taken care of as part of the job bid! We figure our cleaning charge to her is $935.00. At the least we feel we were overcharged $1210.00. As we initially encountered problems with Carol and her lack of professionalism, we thought we were working with someone new to the business. Later we learned that she has been in the business a long time. Amazing!
Description of Work: We used Carol Palm Interiors out of Hudson, WI to do some remodel work this past summer at a loft purchased in Minneapolis. The job involved installation of a kitchen island with cabinetry, granite countertops, cabinet hardware, slate and tile backsplash, stainless steel sink and faucet, wine fridge, closet inserts and closet door. Carol's final charges far exceeded the bid specifications she presented us at the begining of the project. Additional charges were added during the project making it appear that she had given no thought to the entire job process. We were never given a contract to sign. We faced exorbitant charges, timely delays due to inaccurate measurements, double charges when she needed to return to the site to re-measure, filthy messes left after work was supposed to be completed and "turn key ready", failure to hook up dishwasher and garbage disposal correctly after installation of kitchen sink, etc. We were charged for her mistakes. Examples of exorbitant charges: She charged us $127.50 to deliver $19.20 worth of cabinet hardware to Menominee WI and then later charged us $255.00 to be at the job site (in Minneapolis) when the installers installed the cabinet hardware on site. She inaccurately measured the amount of slate and tile needed for the backsplash and charged us an additional $170.00 to go pick up the additional materials. Then she charged us $127.50 to deliver those materials to the site so the installers could finish the job. We tried to speak with Carol regarding her business practices but she would not accept our calls and threatened to sue if we did not pay by a certain date. In the seven remodel and four major building projects with both major building contractors and small business contractors and remodelers that we have done business with over the last 32 years in ND and MN we have never encountered such unethical business practices.

Response from Carol Palm Consultants
I'll start by asserting that the member was not my client. Her son was. My initial meeting with him was 4/18 in which his parents were present. In the discussion I was asked if it was possible to have the job completed by 6/1. I said it was possible. However I was not given access until after the closing which was 5/15. The specification sheet that I gave him was for exactly what it stated. I did not have any line item for demolition because that wasn't discussed in the initial meeting. Neither the son nor the member asked for a price for the demolition and failed to mention it when the specification list was approved. I received a check from the member in April for a down payment. The son was billed on 5/21 for paint selections, cabinet and closet drawings, and my time to attain bids for closets, cabinets, countertops, blinds, and backsplash options. This was all billed out at $85.00 per hour, which is my standard rate. I had a conversation with him after this bill was paid. He commented on my charging for my time each time I came out. I told him that this is how I make my living. I pass on my costs to you and you pay for my time. At this time he was well aware of how I structure my billing. I also made him aware that he could meet with the subcontractors and acquire materials instead of having me do it in order to save money. He stated that he was not interested in doing that. The complaint states that the job did not get started until after the 1st of June. This is not true. I had already billed them on 5/21 and was paid by the member on 5/29, with no questions or concerns. The mistake on the island was both mine and the cabinet maker. We were there to install the island on 6/10 and back on 6/15 with a corrected island. This time frame included a weekend. He was not charged any additional expense as stated in the complaint. The shower door was one of a few items that were added after the fact. He purchased it and it was defective. I returned it for him because he did not know when he could have that done. The complaint about not having the right tools was understandable, but it was out of my control because it was a result of poor tub and tile installation from the builder. It was not a standard shower door installation so the tradesmen had to improvise and in some cases, go out to get appropriate tools. In the process of the job, he requested other options on the island as well as additional items to be built that were not on the original specification. These requests required more time and expense: It is customary for designers to receive commissions from tile and material outlets. I passed all my "trade" savings on to him as a courtesy but kept my hourly rate the same. I do need to make a living. Because of the time frame complaint, I told him that I did not know how to proceed and I was told just to get the work done. I would like to add that none of the member’s complaints were brought to my attention until after my final bill. I was there when the plumbing was installed in the kitchen, which I may add was on the 4th of July. The only thing that may not have been done was to plug them in. Again there was no mention of this until after the final bill. If I was going to the site they complained about paying me and if I did not go to the site to save them the expense, I was unprofessional. Working with the member’s son was a no win situation. The statement regarding their attempts to speak to me and my resistance to taking the calls is not true. I did speak with the member and she was quite rude and accusatory. This is when the complaints were brought to my attention. This was well after the job was complete on 7/23 not 7/29. It is my opinion that she had every intention of being dissatisfied in order to get a break on the work that was done. I have had all of the communication reviewed by my attorney. It was her opinion that my fees were fair and just. I am sorry that the member was so dissatisfied with my work but I also realize you can not please everyone. In my 20 years of experience in this business I have never experienced such a blatant attempt to bully me into reducing my fees as I have with the member. She knew she could not win a law suit so she is now attempting to disparage me in other ways. Thank you for the opportunity to share my side of the story. – Carol Palm, Owner
