Thirteen years later we found some water damage in our basement and when sourcing the problem identified it near a sliding glass door and also notice a basement window was turning black. I called my insurance company and another custom home builder (a different one) for advice and inspection. This builder removed the window, then another window and another. Then removed doors and siding and the findings were astonishing. The plywood under the siding and around the doors and windows, the studs in the walls and throughout was covered in black mold and rotting. In places some of the plywood would actually crumble in your hand. My house from the studs out was rotting away and only 13 years old. I called the original builder and he looked at the house. He declared it wasn't his fault. The insurance inspector along with a new window and door company, a new siding company and the new builer I'm consulting with were and were surprised at his response. The house had not been properly wrapped in Tyvek. It was exposed plywood behind the siding in many places. The house had to be stripped and I've had to hire another builder (a good one this time) to rebuild my home. I sent the original builder a bill for the new Tyvek and other supplies at the tune of about $600. We requested he provide and deliver sheets of plywood and rolls of Tyvek. Whether we see reimbursement is yet to be seen. I'm already rebuilding at a cost of $30,000. These sad findings about our house provided an explanation of multiple problems we'd had in the prior 13 years but we had no idea it was this bad. Floor sagging, chimney problems, construction errors, a collapsed closet ceiling, improper piping, driveway problems, no insulation, and so much more. Beware of this builder.
