He is excellent, very responsive, came right out. Gave me the estimate when he said he would. He called me to tell me he finished the work. He was just a really honest guy who was also a hard worker. He really knew his business and was very thorough and even worked on Saturday and Sunday.

I purchased a late 1800's foreclosure two story home, which i will use as a rental, with two chimneys, that needed some work, were visually unappealing, clogged, and one was taken out of service. John, who did wonderful work on my personal residence in the past, was my first choice when i needed chimney work again. John came out the next day, looked over what i needed, took pictures, explained the problems, and reviewed the estimate with me. Because the chimney was leaking and causing drywall damage, he promptly fit me into his schedule, before the spring rain began again. When the house was changed over from coal to a gas furnace, one of the chimney was closed off and turned into a closet, John removed the no longer needed chimney, and roofed the hole. The Job site, which gets pretty messy, was cleaned, during the project, and left very clean after the job was done. The remaining chimney was reduced, to a functional size, which John pointed out was an option vs repairing a big chimney which was considerately more expensive. I like the fact that he offered me options, on the visual aspects of my house, and cost options. When It was noted the chimney was plugged with 3 feet of suet, and causing a heating problem, and needed to be fixed right away, John was on site with in 1 hour. His promptness is incredible. John is amazing, My chimney looks great, no more sloppy tar, and crumbling bricks. John again made me happy. He is my Chimney guy!! If my next forclosure purchace, need help, he will be my first call. I also am proud to recommend him to everyone!!
Description of Work: Removal of a chimney that was no longer being used. Repaired the roof, where chimney was. Reduced a chimeney that was about 8 feet high, but no longer needed to be that high, as the house no longer uses coal for to 2 feet high

My fireplace was leaking. I called John and he was very responsive and came out for an estimate within days. He went up on the roof to access the problem. He took pictures of the cracks up there and showed them to me on his camera. We arranged a day the folowing week for the work to be done. He removed all caulk on the chimney cap, and sealed them all with mortar. He removed 2 fake flues and replaced the center one. He removed all caulk from the joints from the roof up and tuck pointed from the roof up, bringing the mortar flush with the stone. He tarred the flashing and other areas on the roof behind the chimney. I didn't like the height nor orange color of the flue so he shortened it and painted it black for me. I didn't like all the tar around the chimney as I could notice it from the ground so much. He, then, spray painted it stone color for me and everything looks great. John goes out of his way to please and is very patient. He's extremely professional and knows his stuff.
Description of Work: John did chimney repair and Tuck Pointing.

Great. Initial meeting determined that leakage problem could be fixed with simple caulking rather than cap replacement. Really liked that 1) he took a picture to show us -only one of the repair companies that we contacted that took a digital picture of cap top so we could actually see condition of the cap without climbing ladder and 2) didn't sell us something we didn't have to have -other companies had said cap replacement was necessary and their estimates ranged from $750- $1800.

They were very prompt and courteous. The estimate was more than what we wanted to pay them. They came out about 3 days after we called them. The estimate was around $8000. They had a very elaborate system. It was probably a fair estimate for what they wanted to do. We weren’t willing to pay that much amount. They came when they said they would. If we consider doing the expensive repairs, then we would use their services again.

Very prompt response. Particularly appreciated the extensive time spent at our initial meeting for an estimate. Walked around the house, detailed how he would proceed, took multiple notes, answered all my questions. We got 3 estimates. One company assured me I did NOT need to be there when they did the estimate (?!) and gave a higher price. The other was responsive and gave a lower quote, however we chose John Schrank because of his level of detail beginning with the estimate. We had no timeline and obviously this work is weather-dependent, so it did take several weeks to complete. John was responsive to calls and emails (which was particularly helpful). He and his cousin were very professional, respectful, detailed, and impressed us with their meticulous work. They are clearly skilled artisans who take pride in their work. We felt the cost was well worth the work.
Description of Work: Fixed multiple missing/degrading bricks on cream city brick chimney and cleaned it. Poured new cement cap on chimney. Repaired several crumbling bricks on window sills around the house, in addition to a decorative brick wall. Cleaned, then water-proofed all the brick work.

John and Joe were great with daily communication concerning arrival time and progress throughout the day. They were professional and very knowledgeable. I thought I had to replace the window and they found out what the problem really was thereby saving me money for a replacement window and having an unnecessary expense. Every day they cleaned up their working material, neatly coiled the hose, and took away the trash. The caulking around the whole house looks fabulous, I did not realize what a difference it would make to the attractiveness of my home. He assisted in the decisions as to the color of the caulking in the different areas to best match each different part of the house. I also was happy with the energy savings and insect control that I now have. I was pleased that not only did he accomplish the work in his original proposal but went the extra mile and did more work as other small problems were discovered.
Description of Work: They removed and repaired leaking tuck pointing on my chimney, stone masonry on the front of the house, resealed windows and joists all the way around the house, He went into the attic and found and repaired the inadequate studs and siding that were causing a window to leak.

My voice message about request for an estimate wasn’t returned but an associate of the company was sent to our house without notifying us about the visit, to provide the estimate. The associate arrived when we weren’t home and somehow decided that we need our chimney repaired, which was a wrong assumption, and started climbing the chimney. A neighbor knowing that we aren’t home found it suspicious and called police. As a result, the associate found himself in a very stupid situation. After the incident, I finally got connected with the owner and we agreed on face to face meeting for the estimate. However, nobody showed for the appointment.
Description of Work: I had very bad and ironic experience with setting appointment for estimate of the job.

Response from Schrank Restoration
It's not unusual for an estimate to be done while the customer is not home when 95% of our work is on the outside of home. I did talk to the neighbor and the police and they both confirmed that it was the member who called the police. We did setup another appointment and it was the member who was not home once again. We don't blame him, I'm sure it is a common problem with his broken English and heavy accent.

Mantle was separating from the wall. John caulked the fireplace mantle to cover the separation from the wall. Anchoring the mantle with more screws turned out not to be a good option. John took off $70 off on estimate because anchoring was not needed. Price was very reasonable. He had to come out twice. Once for the estimate and offered suggestions and once to do the work.

The job required selecting stone that would be a good match for the existing exterior, replacing the wire mesh that held the 'brick' exterior in place and rebuilding the corner where the damage occurred. John kept in steady contact with us. He made more than one visit to select the best matching stone. Once the stone was selected and ordered he completed the repair in half a day as he had said he would.
Description of Work: John repaired a roughly 2' by 8' section of the exterior of our house where the 'stone'(our house has a concrete facade that looks like stone) had been knocked off.

It was great. John was fast and very helpful. He explained why the leak had occurred and how he had changed the existing flashing to fix it. He did let us know that since the flashing was not his own work that he could not guarantee it. Which seemed reasonable to us. He called the next day (from his vacation) to ask how things had gone with the rain we got after he fixed the flashing. I was very pleasantly surprised that he called to make sure everything was fine. It was! No leaks! No problems!
Description of Work: We had a leak due to the flashing on our chimney. When we could not get the original contractor to fix the mistake, I had John give me an estimate on the repair. He was prompt and professional. He fixed the flashing before the rain the following day so that we could avoid further damage inside our house.
