They did a good job packing and repacking before the move. Smart Moves used a lot of packing paper in drawers and around items so things wouldn't moved around. I thought the cost was a bit high at first but they did come in under the estimate. They took extra care to make sure everything arrived safely including my china and other fragile items and I am not sure other movers would have been so careful. But I do have one problem that has not been resolved and it has been around 5 months. Some of my furniture pieces have drawers and larger spaces in them that are not obvious right away until you point them out. When I had Smart Moves come over to give me that estimate for the move, I pointed these out. The one in question I cannot be 100% certain that I did point it out. On the day of packing, whoever packed my bedroom did find one in another piece of furniture. Regardless, some items fell out of the drawer as it was up-ended and tipped on it side. The main moving man, as the piece was coming in from the truck, stated that someone did not pack the drawer correctly. He then handed me a tangled collection of items that had fallen out of the drawer. The movers also looked over the furniture piece and noticed that the wood at that end of the piece where the drawer had opened was damaged from those items as the furniture piece sat on top of them in the truck. I put the pieces back in the drawer after I opened it by gentle pulling, noticed it was a bigger tangled mess and checked out another drawer that was in the same condition. I did not have more time to investigate as more boxes and furniture were coming in off the truck. Another person from Smart Moves was there the day I moved in both my old residence and new residence. The Smart MOves owner took the 6 damaged items, 2 were completely flattened, to someone that she knew and had done work for her before to have them repaired. All were repaired within a week except one item. The shop owner had it for 6-7 weeks but couldn't always work on it because of the Christmas and St. Valentine holidays. I finally picked it up because the item was beyond his scope of repair and it turns out that he did not have the correct equipment anyway but is was not longer flat and still not repaired to its original condition. I spoke to the Smart Moves owner and she suggested one more place that she used in the past. During this time I did extensive online research on the item and spoke to several people with extensive knowledge of the item and have expertise in the pairing these types of items. The Smart Moves owner and I met at the second repair place, spoke to the owner who gave us a flat amount for the repair, not an estimate. I questioned him further about the repair and was not comfortable with his answers, so I said I would think about it. The Smart Moves owner and I then discussed the situation in the repair shop's vestibul and I expressed my concerns. She expressed that she didn't know what else she could do and what could she do to make me happy. She did not want to give me a blank check (I didn't either) and I wanted to know that any "what-ifs" would be taken care of. We left without a solution. I then came up with a solution that I though was a good compromise, sent it in am email but it has been rejected. The company claims that I did not tell them about the hidden/secret drawers. The owner was not there but her assistant was. The assistant did start to write down and take pictures of my household items that were going to the new home or storage or eventually be donated. The assistant did stop taking pictures and writing items down during the quote process. She may have not written down the drawers that were termed hidden/secret. Smart Moves did offer to have the jewelry repaired at a place of their choosing the first time. The first jewelry shop had the ring for almost 7 weeks but could not repair it because they did not have the correct equipment to do the repair and may have caused more damage. Smart Moves did know about the lack of equipment before I did. Then Smart moves suggested that I get appraisals for the repairs which ranged from approximately $575 to approximately $1000 due to the intricate nature of the work. I took the jewelry to experts in that type of repair. Those quotes that I received were dismissed out of hand the next time I spoke to the Smart Moves owner. She again told me to meet her at a jeweler of her choosing of which I was skeptical of because of the previous experience and reviews of this particular jeweler online. The meeting with this second jeweler, the Smart Moves owner and I did nothing to calm my fears. I left the second jeweler stating that I would think about this second offer. Before I left, the Smart Moves owner and I had a lengthy discussion about my hesitancy in having this jeweler do the repairs. No where in the moving contract does it state that Smart Moves has to pick the place and the amount for the repair. I did not reject the Smart Moves offer, they rejected mine and did not counter offer. The piece has still not been repaired or replaced as stated in their contract as of 06/01/2015 since 11/11/2014.
Description of Work: They moved me from my old location to my new location I also had items taken to a storage unit.

Response from Smart Moves
This customer hired Smart Moves to move her household belongings from her condominium to an apartment. Prior to the move, the customer did not tell Smart Moves about hidden/secret drawers in her bedroom dresser that contained jewelry. Also, the customer did not remove the hidden jewelry prior to the move. After the move, the customer complained that jewelry had been damaged in the move. Despite not knowing about the hidden/secret drawers and the jewelry prior to the move, Smart Moves offered to have the jewelry repaired at a jeweler of Smart Moves’ choosing, or to pay the customer the amount quoted for repairs. After having the jewelry inspected by the jeweler, and getting a quote for repairs, the customer rejected the offer. Smart Moves now considers the matter closed.

I like them very much they are very helpful people. They are mostly women, but the movers who work on the moving day are men for moving things like a big fridge, other than that everything else is done by women and they do a good job. They are very trustworthy.
Description of Work: I had used Smart Moves for my house moving. They do a variety of things, and they charge differently for different work components. It is intended for people who are older and are leaving a place that they have lived for a long time and going to a smaller place to live. So the idea is, that they help you move, help you sort through everything. Then, they have a pickup, which they use to take the belongings to a good store, where they shelf used things pretty nicely. You could get a little money back from that contingency store. A store where they pay you a little if you are able to sell what you had. They also have somebody come in and help you with your books and records, and the store gives you a certain amount if you are able to sell. Finally, they also help with the actual move and packing. They try to make sure that all your household stuff that you are moving into this next place, will really fit in; so they take all the measurements of the packages and that is very helpful.

The move went very smoothly and it was very helpful to have experienced people organize the kitchen area.
Description of Work: I have used Smart Moves before and am very pleased with their services. In August, they helped move my Mother from her condominium to a senior apartment. One packer helped finish packing and coordinating on the day of the move. Two movers handled the loading and unloading of the truck. Two packers helped with the unpacking and organizing at the apartment especially in the kitchen and bathroom areas.

They have a really nice way of helping me. They help me choose the items I want to keep but are very serious about helping me discard of the things I didn't want. They bring all of the necessary boxes and packing materials. They help with the actual movers and even help unpack my items and organize them (this is what the cost was for).
Description of Work: Smart Moves helped me downsize. They helped me organize my possessions and take things I didn't want to appropriate places.

A lot of seniors have to move to a smaller place and need help getting organized. They are helpful in getting rid of the things you don’t need and keep what you are attached to. She was along with someone else helped me move and she works very hard and fast. The other great thing is that she is allowed her husband’s pick-up truck, so she has taken a lot of weight and I appreciate that. She will also take some of the things to consignment shops and sell it and get the money for you.
Description of Work: used Smart Moves a year ago and she helped me move. The last time I used her was in March.
