Kevin is excellent! I wanted someone with knowledge of flowers, bushes & trees, instead of someone that would just get the job done. Kevin knew all about the variety of plants in our yard. The first landscaper that I ever had an informed discussion with. NOT someone that will do what you tell them to, just to make a buck.. Knows when it is the right time of the year to trim back plants or bushes and can identify them. He was right on time for the estimate. Got back to us with the estimate very quickly and stayed in touch with us regarding the time line. He gave me a date when they would begin and called me that morning to tell me they were coming. Outstanding job! His crew was right on time and went above and beyond what we had asked them to do.
Description of Work: Trimmed back all of our perennials, trimmed bushes, pruned trees, removed existing plants and relandscaped that area.

Really well. One of the most professional companies I have worked with. Responsive on phone calls. Showed up exactly when stated and kept me informed of anything regarding the job. Worked with me on my questions and thoughts and was respectful to them. Not one complaint from me. Cleaned up beautifully and followed up regarding satisfaction of the job.

The owner of the company came out to give us a plan to alleviate that. He went above on beyond to get the issue resolved. He did a marvelous job. We can't say enough about this company. He even did an entire evaluation of the property to try and convince the city to fix our problem without even thinking about himself getting paid. His crew was extremely professional and they were on time with deadlines.

HILL & VALLEY LANDSCAPING LLC's estimate was very good. They were very detailed and straightforward. Their price was a little higher so I went with the low bid contractor and regretted it later. I wish I would have hired them instead of the people I did hire.

The job went very well. The men arrived on time, worked consistently through the day. We needed about 30 yards of fill to level a low spot in the yard, needed to have that pitch away from the pool area. We also put stone around the pool area. The men verified what needed to be done, and checked with us periodically to make sure the job was going the way we envisioned it. Kevin also stopped by to make sure everything was going as planned. The job site was left clean. We are very pleased with the work done and would hire them again.
Description of Work: We recently put in a new above ground swimming pool. We had a very large area that needed to be filled in, a new pitch created and reseeded, and landscaping was needed around the pool area. In our front yard we needed an area by the front sidewalk re-pitched and new sod put in.

They were very thorough and easy to work with. They cleaned up after themselves, and when they were finised, it would have been difficult to guess that they had been there
Description of Work: Hill and Valley took out all of the rock on two sides of my house and built up the soil underneath that had begun to settle, added new weed protector and replaced the rocks. They also added a very nice border around one of my beds that was looking pretty shabby.

Kevin's crew was on time, the job went well. The two men were friendly, took the time to answer questions and did a great job. The front landscaping looks terrific and the pitch going away from the house is now correct. The men worked steadily and efficiently. They had to remove alot of topsoil and replace it with the proper fill, as well as remove & replant old plants and put in new plants. The weather has been a challenge for landscaping this year. The rainy, resulting in muddy conditions made scheduling the job more difficult. Kevin kept in contact with us to let us know when his crew would be here. The communication was very much appreciated. We will be hiring Kevin to do more landscaping in our back yard. We are very pleased.
Description of Work: We had a drainage issue with our landscaping in the front of our house. Hill & Valley had to remove bark, landscape fabric, topsoil & plants. New fill was brought in, landscape fabric replaced, new plants put in and bark replaced. Last year we had some new landscaping done in our front yard by someone else. It was done incorrectly, the wrong fill was used, improper pitch; caused some major problems. Kevin knew exactly what needed to be done.

They called on a Friday to let me know they'd be working on our front bed the following Monday. Kevin and his workers showed up around 8:30 to begin. We briefly talked about how the bed would be shaped, then the guys went to work. They arranged the shrubs and bushes and asked my opinion about placement, which was perfect. They installed the plants and watered them. Afterwards, they cleaned up everything, which included all the excess dirt they poured on the driveway to begin the project. It looked pristine. The guys were competent and knowledgable, and took the time to explain a few details to me. Within a few days, Kevin called to ask what we thought about the project (we love it), and to say that he'd be checking in every 7-10 days to see if the plants were getting enough water. So far, he's been here twice that I know of. Of the 10 items we had planted, 2 knockout rose bushes have been eaten by rabbits - something I didn't know they ate. The only other one is thriving as is everything else. I contacted Kevin about this and when he came to take a look, he was surprised. I guess in his experience that hasn't happened before. While there is new growth on both bushes, they are much smaller than the other one, so it looks a little odd, but nothing we can't live with and a temporary fence can't fix. Overall, our experience with Kevin has been very positive plus the overall cost seems competitive with other quotes we obtained.
Description of Work: They cut out the crest on the front yard planting bed to lower the grade, spread ground to create a positive pitch away from our home, and cut a natural grass edge to shape the front bed. They installed several bushes, shrubs and a tree to anchor the bed. They also spread mulch throughout, and planted grass seed.

After receiving several bids from landscapers, we decided to go with Hill & Valley because the price was competitive and we like the owner who met with us. We had to put off the work due to other projects that had to be completed first, so it was several months between the initial meeting and having the work done. This became a problem because we had planned on meeting with them again before having the work done to be sure we were all on the same page, but instead they decided to just come and do the work going off the notes from the initial meeting. We should have insisted that we meet first, but we were anxious to get the work done as it was already into fall and we had other projects being held up until we had this work done. As a result, we were disappointed with the placement of one of the walls and with the fact that the tiered wall was not installed the way they had described in the contract. They decided to forgo digging a more stable foundation for the tiered wall which may mean that the wall will subside sooner than it should. The foundation they laid for the patio was not to the grade we had agreed upon and they had to come and correct that. They left the areas around the work unfinished. They did come back and finish it off better after we complained. They also raised the cost of removing the tree debris after the work was complete despite the price he already had quoted us. All in all, we are happy the work is done and it all looks really great, but we wish the process would have been better. We will not call them again.
Description of Work: Filled and leveled area around garage and installed stone wall on one side. Installed tiered stone wall and stairs into hill. Filled and leveled foundation for stone paver patio. Put down grass seed.

Overall the project went well. It took the estimated time of two days and no extras were added to the estimated costs. They even extended the crushed stone walkway to two garage doors, which were not part of the original project discussion. They were very cooperative about working around an underground electric line, and saving and stockpiling the existing stone and recycled asphalt materials that had been in the project area. I had requested that they stockpile the stone on a mulched area and they layed down thick landscape cloth beneath the stone so it didn't get mixed with the mulch. The only negative comments would be that I thought the trees were planted a little too deep and they didn't appear to have been watered; it didn't look like the crushed stone had been compacted (at least at the surface); and no one contacted me during or at the conclusion of the project to see if I had any questions or issues. Although this project was very small a short call to let me know it had been completed and that there were no problems, etc,. or to see if I had any questions would have been appreciated.
Description of Work: Hill & Valley Landscaping reinstalled a catch drain and drainage pipe that had been incorrectly installed by a previous landscaper. They also extended the drainage pipe to provide for adequate pitch; installed a crushed stone path; removed topsoil, and graded and installed a crushed stone patio approach; and transplanted three dwarf evergreen trees.

The landscaping was good. They did an excellent job removing the old bushes and bed. And a good job planting the row of arborvitae. So I was satisfied with the main part of the job. The details did bother me. The old, over-grown bush bed was on a slope. They were supposed to cover the grass seed with ground cover. But apparently they didn't bring enough. So I had to go to Stein to buy a roll of ground cover (and install it) to make sure the seed didn't wash out. My biggest issue was with the tree trim. I expected a complete tree trim. Including all the under-growth. I let them know that I wasn't happy with the tree trim. He said he would come out and look at it. In the mean time, I sent a second email with pictures of my trees. 3 weeks later he showed up to inspect it. A couple weeks after that, his crew came back and trimmed a little more. But all the under-growth is still there. I suspect he came back only because I was holding my check. I went ahead and paid him, but I'll need to have a good tree trimmer come out next year. They did a good job on the landscaping, and I will enjoy it for many years. But I don't recommend them for tree trimming.
Description of Work: They removed a large, overgrown bed in my back yard, and put in a row of arborvitae to screen from my neighbor. Also trim and ring with mulch my 2 large trees, grind a stump of a previously cut down tree, and trim my lilac bush.

The removal of shrubs around the house went OK except that the crew left a hole in our composite siding behind one of the removed trees, which was growing right up against the house. The owner argued his crew could not possibly have done this; I argued that there was an 8-foot shrub there before, making the siding inaccessible to us, and that since it was composite siding, the gouge in it was clearly a fresh one. He eventually came out and patched/repainted but this took several calls. The bigger problem is the shrub bed. The crew did not remove rthe stone mulch, which we did not discover until I had already started planting. This was just a few days before I was to have surgery that would lay me up the rest of the summer, so I just wanted to get stuff planted. I never realized what a huge problem this would be. It is now four years later and I am frustrated every time I try to plant anything; I cannot get a trowel more than an inch into the dirt without hitting rocks. Every hole dug is an exercise in picking rocks. This morning it took me half an hour to dig a hole big enough for a plant in a one-gallon container. I filled a huge coffee can with rocks just from that hole. Having such a rocky planting medium also has cost us money because we never know what plants will thrive in this lousy medium. Many of the plants we've chosen have died. I am resigned to picking rocks from here to eternity. My only consolation is that Angie's List gives me the opportunity to let other people know about my experience. I wouldn't hire HIll & Valley to so much as dig a hole.

Response from Hill & Valley Landscaping LLC
The members are valuable clients just like any of our other clients. It shocks me, to hear about the planting bed being an issue, over four years later. We were contracted to remove timbers and decorative stone from a raised bed . We did as stated on our quote and tilled the bed and spread soil throughout it. Over time stone does rise and since we weren’t contracted to remove the entire raised bed this may have happened. There are too many variables to determine what happened four years after the work was completed. This matter was never brought to our attention and if it was, we would have addressed it. The siding was the only issue brought up, which was fixed promptly. Hill & Valley strives to go above and beyond our customer’s expectations, and it shows with being named an Angie’s List Super Service provider multiple times.

We would highly recommend Hill & Valley. We had a lot of drainage issues in our yard, as well as an eyesore for a deck. Our trees & plantings were out of control. We had no idea where to start or what to do to make it a useable yard. We could not picture what we wanted. Kevin came in & met with us several times. He really listened to us & came up with a wonderful plan based on our needs. I've never worked with a contractor so attentive. ALL of my calls were answered promptly.... and I called a lot with many, many questions. As the work started, the team was just as great. I couldn't believe it! They showed up on time, they were very attentive, clean, professional, had great ideas, were hard working, & really treated our home like it was their own. Everyone at Hill & Valley cared about their work & really put in extra effort to do a good job. One nice surprise was that all of the trees & bushes they planted were larger than we thought they would be, which is very nice to get a head start on the growing curve. I was also very impressed with the team's precision. When installing the patio, they were constantly checking their work with levels & grading tools. They water tested as they were working. Mother nature also tested their work with 2-3 inches of rain & there wasn't even a puddle! Now as our grass is starting to grow, they still stop by to ensure it's growing well. That shocked me, but shouldn't have since their service has been unbelievable the entire time. We now sit out on our new patio & can't believe it's our yard!
Description of Work: Hill & Valley removed our deck & 4 trees, regraded our back yard, installed a patio & walkway, and a retaining wall, finishing up with plantings.

Kevin was very much concerned with making sure we understood how the project was to proceed. Initially, he heard our design ideas and gave us a recommendation based on the fact we had some buried cables and a tree nearby. He then came out to the house to show us the pavers we had picked out. From the time I had first contacted Kevin to the finished patio took about 2 weeks. After the patio was finished, the grass was graded and reseeded. Kevin said he'd check back over the next few weeks to see how the grass was doing. Overall, best experience ever.
Description of Work: I called Kevin about installing a patio (approximately 12' X 15') near our sunroom. I initially thought of concrete, but asked Kevin to prepare a quote for pavers as well. The concrete would have been approximately $3,000, but we opted for the pavers and we are very glad we did. The work performed was excellent, better than we could have ever imagined. And it only took them two days! The workers were very professional and even though the yard was torn up a bit to get the dirt out and the pavers in, the areas of the yard disturbed were cleanly graded. I'd almost say the yard looks better than before they started the work. My wife and I had only a vague idea what kind of patio to put in. We described it to Kevin and he designed a beautiful walkway that curves naturally to our kidney bean shaped patio. Incredible workmanship!

Overall, everyone was very nice to work with. They arrived at the time and date they stated, both for the estimate and when the actual work was done. During the estimate Kevin Sannes suggested different mulches that could be used and actually stopped back a day or two later with a variety of mulch samples labeled in bags (thanks again!). My wife and I searched the internet for ornamental grasses that we liked and came up with a Top Ten List... Kevin was able to find our top three picks. The crew was hard working and thorough... even lifting up overhanging bushes to add mulch beneath them (not something other landscapers have done). The PVC downspouts that were added went smoothly and they even added clean out spouts with a strainer cover - great idea. Excellent clean up job as well. We're very satisfied and would definitely have them back for future projects. Great job guys.
Description of Work: Added ground in certain areas to correct grade; added mulch to all planting beds (apprx 20 yards); replaced existing below ground downspouts with PVC (the black corrugated pipes were constantly getting clogged); planted a few ornamental grasses.
