I bought this "deal" because I was hoping to get some new ideas for refinishing our basement. All I got was an email of a drawing with dimensions. I was not impressed - no originality, no creative use of space, etc. Perhaps my expectations were too high, but I can use a tape measure and graph paper myself - I don't need to pay someone to do that.
Description of Work: Not much of a service. He sent me a scale drawing over email.

Response from American Home Remodeling
I met with the home owner and after listening to her wish list and observing the severe limitations available in the space pertaining to locations of plumbing equipment, load bearing walls and the odd shape of the space in general and where the stairs came into the area there was very little that could be done without major and very costly construction. She kept mentioning that she wanted to spend as little as possible to add things such as a full bath and sauna and several other living spaces. I always try to look at how to acomplish things without going overboard with the costs associated. She mentioned that I offered no creativity, but with what she wanted to do and spend, I came up with the lay out that added all of the spaces that she was looking for and drew them within the unusual configuration that the design was limited to. As I figured once we priced it out we never heard back from the home owner. I'm not sure what type of magic she was hoping for for $99. What she did receive was an in home consultation, where I pointed out the limiting factors, a floor plan that can be used to obtain building permits and comparison pricing. Angie's List offering that service for $99 is a very good price since if someone were to contract with an architect / designer the fees can get into the 1000's. If you are reading this we ask that you take the time to go through some of the many fantasic reviews we have from Angies List members that we have actually worked for, and provided a high quality remodel for. Thank you

Ultimately, we decided to hold off on doing the basement since the estimate to have the whole job done for us was a lot higher than we were interested in spending - not necessarily by any fault of American Home Remodeling, just more than we wanted to spend. We decided ultimately to try to do a lot of the work ourselves but it was great to have a drawing to go off of and have an idea of what we wanted to do.
Description of Work: We wanted to get ideas for remodeling our basement and American Home Remodeling had an Angie's List special where you could pay $109 to have someone come out, draw up a floor plan to provide to you, and get an estimate. We were in the beginning stages of deciding what we wanted to do with the basement so it was great to be able to get a drawing/ideas for only $109.

We did speak several times to [member name removed] trying to coordinate a time to meet. at the time we were very busy with several projects and it was also around the holidays adding to the time constraints. [member name removed] was very interested in starting right away, which we had explained from the very begining that it would not have worked timing wise with our current work load. She said she understood and that she would just prefer to start on her project with someone that had the ability to get there right away.. I mentioned that I could appreciate that and thanked her for her understanding and for contacting us in the first place. I also wished her well with her project and to contact us back if she ran into any trouble obtaining a contractor.

Ok. It was hard to make an appointment or get a hold of him. Returning phone calls wasn't always happening. The bottom line is that I paid for and what I received wasn't worth the money. I guess I expected more. Perhaps some design help or consultation. Probably my fault for wanting more.....

I was very up front with the customer explaining that I was extremely busy and that it would take a while to be able to set an appointment for his design. I'm not sure what design help he is refering to since the basement space we were designing was a small rectangle approx. 13' x 20' with 1 closet as this was the only available space for his rec. room. we discussed electrical layout for lighting and TV location and the possibility of using studs flat to gain a little space with 1- 1/2 " rigid insulation. Had the customer hired a designer or architect for his basement plans he would have spent anywhere from $500 - $1000 to have his drawing completed. For $109, which is paid to Angie"s List, not us, he received a consultation ( albeit there isn't much to discuss with a small rectangular room ) and a drawing that can be used to obtain permits, quotes and complete the process, which he said was a do it yourself project.

Scott Cimler and his team of experienced professionals made us the envy of all our friends who have ever hired a contractor. Scott's estimate was right on, his design was perfect and the execution by him and his team is beautiful. He (or his team member) arrived when scheduled, were respectful of our home and were not intrusive into our lives in any way. If Scott was not on-site, he was in contact with his team member to ensure all things were going well. We'd never had success with a contractor before - most wouldn't even quote a job! - so as a last-ditch effort, I joined Angie's List to find someone to install our fireplace surround. Scott responded immediately to my request and quoted the job within days of our initial contact. He and his team worked out their schedule around ours (!) and we had little to no inconvenience during the construction. Scott and his team were mindful of the details and helped us make the right choices for our home. They suggested additional details without expanding scope of the job because it was the right thing to do. Would I use them again? You bet! If you're looking for a remodeling partner, rather than a jobber, contact American Home Remodeling. You won't regret it.

I hired Scott (American Home Remodeling ) for a major second floor remodel. Two bathrooms were gutted and rebuilt from the studs up. Walls were moved and opened up to create two separate rooms (an office loft and spare bedroom) out of a very awkwardly shaped bedroom. This was not the first major remodeling that we went through, in fact, it was our third time of going through the upheaval of a remodel. Scott and his sub contractors were pleasure to work with, they were responsive to my requests and very aware of the inconvenience a remodel puts a homeowner through. I found a very unique bathroom faucet online which I absolutely loved. After the sink and granite was installed it was obvious that the faucet would not fit on the counter. We went out of town over the holidays, Scott and his crew worked on Christmas Eve to figure out a way to install the faucet. When we returned what a surprise it was to see the faucet in the master bath. This really is just one example of how Scott went above and beyond. I have recommended his company to many of my friends. The only regret I have is that I did not discover his company when we first started remodeling our home. He is easy to work with, answers your questions, addresses your concerns and responds to phone calls/texts immediately. Would I hire American again? Absolutely !!! If you are looking to remodel, whether it be a small or large project give American a call, you will not regret it !!!

The work absolutely met our expectations. When there were any questions, Scott was super about getting back to us with comments, suggestions, and solutions. He was always courteous, punctual, respectful--professional. We will be doing a kitchen rebuild this coming spring, and we plan on using American Home Remodeling again. I recommend them highly.
Description of Work: We remodeled the bathroom in our master bedroom. The job included new floor, new cabinets, new towel racks, new shelving, new wallpaper, and new toilet. Essentially, the whole bathroom with the exception of the shower, was redone. We negotiated a deal with Scott Cimler, the owner, that included our providing the cabinets, shelving, and fixtures, and American Home Remodeling provided the other smaller materials and did the job. The work was done on time, within budget, and to our satisfaction. I wish that I could find service like this from all contractors.

We had a couple of appointments scheduled but weather and another job that he was doing got in the way. We went back and forth attempting to find a good time for him to come do the plans via e-mail and he eventually told us it was too far away for him to come out. We needed to have the project done more quickly and found another company to do the design.

We Did mention to the customer that she lived out of our working territory but would try to horor the coupon anyway. I told her that we were extremely busy trying to complete other projects and with the holidays fast approaching it would be very dificult to get out and see her for a while. I further explained that I completely understood that if she needed someone to come out in a more timely fashion that Angieslist is very good about offering refunds for coupon purchases. We never had an official appointment set other than me letting her know that I would try to come and see her when I would be somewhere fairly close. I also mentioned to her that if she did obtain quotes from other contractors that I would be happy to look at them and give her my thoughts and see if we would be able to be competitive. We wish her well with her project.

Scott Cimler provided us with a floor plan for our (finished) basement, which we want to remodel at some point in order to get better use out of the space. He accepted our Angie's List coupon that we had purchased without any problems even though it was past the expiration date, and was very professional when he came to take the measurements and discuss the future use of our basement. That gave us at least an idea of the possibilities, although the final floor plan was not in perfect alignment with our own ideas. I suppose we could have had further discussions with him about potential changes and rearrangements, but at this point we felt we had enough information and obtained the service that we had paid for.

I was initially asked about what I was looking for in a design. We normally would have scheduled an appointment to measure the space and snap some photos, but I already had this available. There was a bit of communication lapse / technical problems when I emailed photos, but we worked through this without too much trouble. A few months later, I received a drawing of a well-designed attic space. I was pleased with the final result, and the price was excellent. The only negative comment is that the design took several months before complete. I also requested an estimate to build-out the design but never received any follow-up on that request.

Scott was very patient with us during the project. We started discussing a larger project with him nearly 6 months earlier and ultimately decided to just focus on the outdoor work this year. Scott was very flexible with our change of plans and our long delay in deciding what we wanted to undertake The bidding process was smooth. Scott is not the least expensive provider but his team does high quality work and the price is well worth the value. Once we signed the quote it took about a month to get materials in and commence work. Work took a bit longer than anticipated but poor weather was a contributing factor. The crew performed high quality work and Scott was on site often to check on progress. We are very happy with the end product and have received a number of complements.

We've turned to Scott Cimler for a number of projects around our house, including a kitchen remodel, egress window and painting -- and we've always been pleased. So when we needed a new roof, we included him when we sought out bids. He was able to match the price of our lowest bid. The work was done quickly and cleanly. They even fixed some issues with clogged bathroom ventilation tubes that went to the roof (thanks to birds! -- the new roof vents will ensure that won't happen again) and attic insulation that was blocking proper airflow in the attic. Overall, very pleased with the work.

The project went great and our new kitchen looks fantastic! Scott Cimler worked with us from the early design stages, helping us consider options we otherwise never would have thought of ourselves, including an above-the-cooktop cabinet arrangement that really serves as a focal point for the kitchen. The overall cabinet design is very functional and meets our needs perfectly; the custom cabinets were reasonably priced and make perfect use of our kitchen space. During the project, Scott kept us with a working sink and stove for as long as possible (as much as I enjoy eating out, it gets old (and expensive) after a while, so having the kitchen basics for all but a few weeks of the project was great.) He always kept us informed of developments and kept things on track, making sure things were done right. I've had Scott perform other work on the house and he always goes that extra mile, and the subcontractors he uses seem to have that same mindset. We're very satisfied with the work, and we'd call upon Scott Cimler for any other remodeling work for the house.
Description of Work: Complete kitchen remodel, including removal of old soffits (and moving electrical and plumbing inside) and closet, removal of half-wall to better use the space, replacement/new style windows and door, new siding where needed from new window/door style, installation of new custom cabinets, granite countertops, light fixtures, backsplash tile, etc.

The cedar trim on our house has become a problem point -- gaps were growing between the trim and the siding, creating a risk of water penetration (some water was already penetrating on the east side of the home around some windows and a faux attic vent.) Scott Cimler got us connected with All Seasons Painting in Germantown. P.J. Malloy came out, gave us a reasonable quote to caulk and repaint the trim. They had to replace some rotten boards on that east side, but did so at a reasonable cost. The gaps are gone and the new paint job looks great. I would use All Seasons Painting again.

We hired Scott for to finish our unfinished basement. He was the first of three companies that we had in for an estimate. After spending about an hour with him discussing with him what we had in mind and various options, he said he'd have a drawing (we used a coupon that he had available through Angie's List for the drawing) and estimate back to us within two weeks. During that time, we had a number of e-mail exchanges discussing additional thoughts and details about the project, and Scott always responded in a timely manner. I am a fairly detail-oriented person and had a lot of questions to ask prior to making a decision on who to hire for our project, and Scott was happy to answer any and all questions that I had. We received the estimate within the time frame Scott gave us, and it was very comparable to the other two estimates we ended up receiving. We ultimately decided to go with Scott because of his great communication and our belief that he understood best what we were looking for and how to best get us there within our estimated budget. We were definitely not disappointed in our choice. Scott continued his excellent communication throughout the project with almost daily e-mails/calls as to the status and upcoming schedule. As the project developed, he had a number of great suggestions on how to improve certain things, not to add cost, but to add value to the project. Scott and all of his subcontractors were all very courteous, respectful and great to work with and you could really tell that they all took great pride in their work. We felt completely comfortable having them in our home whether we were present or not. The workspace was kept as clean as possible and Scott was frequently on site even when he was not participating in that day's work to check on his subs and to make sure things were proceeding according to plan. Scott even adjusted one of our kitchen cabinet doors that he noticed wasn't straight on his own. He kept the final costs within his estimate - no surprises - and completed the work within his estimated time frame. The only minor cost increases were for a few additions that we requested after the original estimate. The final product actually exceeded our expectations and our family absolutely loves the added space. And while we thought everything was top-notch, we were especially impressed by the custom cabinetry that was installed in the play room and bedroom. We have already recommended Scott to neighbors and friends and would certainly use him again for any future projects.

Tried for months to get the someone to schedule a meeting. I left many phone messages and sent emails. I even gave them a rough set of measurements by email. Steve would contact me and say he needed to get it scheduled but it never got scheduled. This was a bad purchase as I was making a decision on a new roof or bathroom remodel and we eventually went with the roof as we could not get the estimate for the bathroom. 07/14 - update - after I posted the review the company called an apologized for not getting back to me. We got some design drawings but at this point we will probably not use this company.

I recieved an email from Member dated 3/13 stating that he had a coupon that was about to expire. I responed back the same day and mentioned to not worry that I would honor the coupon without expiration. He had said that Friday afternoons would be a good time to meet. I mentioned that I was quite busy, but that I thought that I could make an upcoming friday work as well. I didn't receive a response, or so I thought. As with all of my prospects and clients I never pressure or push. Everyone is busy in life and I let people get back to me at their leisure. After reading the review I went back and did find an email from Member dated 3/17 that somehow found its way into my junk folder. He mentioned leaving voicemails of which I didn't receive and I do check my voicemail regularly, I either save the message until I'm able to respond to it, or I take notes on it prior to calling back. He also mentioned talking with someone named Steve, and we have no one named Steve here. I'm very proud of the ranking I have earned on Angies List and ask that you please read all of my other reviews. I contacted Member immediately to appologize for the mishap and to offer him a refund of my portion of his coupon purchase and also offered him a free construction consultation for any project he would like to do, for the inconvenience to him. I earned the Super Service Award in 11 categories of construction. I have many clients that I'm happy to have available for anyone that wishes to talk to regarding the quality of my work and my professionalism. Thanks for reading my response.

We had an idea of what we wanted to do, but needed some advice/guidance to make it work. Scott was very easy to work with and had some great recommendations where we needed them. The work was done with care as if it was being done in his own home. The result is an area we are very happy with that blends nicely into the space/decor we had.

Scott and his crew installed two sets of french doors into an open-concept dining room in order for us to be able to use that room as an office/den. Additional work included the installation of four can-lights with a new wall switch, and installation of cable and telephone into a single box on the wall. Prior to the installation of the doors, the walls had to be rough-framed, drywalled, and texture sprayed to the new door's rough openings. The drywall extensions are imperceptible from the existing drywall finishes. In fact, the member of his crew who did the drywall did the original drywall work in our four-year-old home. The electrician was top notch also, and I am still in awe how he was able to run the electrical from the new can lights to the wall switch-box without any damage to drywall. That's why I hire professionals. I probably could have done everything, but it would have taken me all summer. Scott and his crew finished up in a few days work. He and his crew were always courteous, and always cleaned up after a day's work. Awesome work. Highly recommended. ********** I wish I could post pictures, but Angie's List doesn't seem to want to make it easy for review-writers to do that even though Angie's List says that's one of their suggested "Do" items. Minus 1 for Angie's List for making that task difficult. **********

Since the weather was starting to turn they organized it to ensure it was done before the ground froze. We confirmed we wanted the egress done the Friday after Thankgiving and they had it organized with permits and ready to put in within weeks. Then with a crew of about 5 they worked 12 hours to get the egress done from start to finish in one day. They did a wonderful job and the window looks great. I liked working with this contractor because they were very helpful with all of the decisions that needed to be made. It can be overwhelming with the endless choices out there. They were very budget conscious when it came to selections of out materials. While taking on a project like this we knew it would be a disruption to our daily lives being without our kitchen for a period of time, but our contractor worked hard to complete the process in a timely fashion and the end result was well worth it and we love our new kitchen and are very pleased with the work done.

Our bathroom was in need of updating and we decided to start from scratch. We had a beautiful new cherry vanity installed. The tile work really looks great and adding it to the ceiling in the shower with a recessed light was a suggestion from Scott which we really love. Our bath accessories now match our new fixtures and also look great. The room is so much nicer and we couldn't be happier with the job done.
Description of Work: Bathroom remodel: This was a complete gut remodel of our main bath with a new double vanity with a solid surface top, new fixtures and a custom tiled floor and shower walls.
