Black & Sons Furniture Makers is a family-owned and second-generation woodworking company based in Columbus, Wisconsin. Since 1968, we have been designing and creating custom furniture, custom cabinetry, and all kinds of custom woodworking and finishing for private clients, contractors, designers, and architects. We also refinish, repair, and restore furniture and antiques.
We were doing a addition to our house and I had them build a vanity that I designed for our bathroom. They were great. Terrific communication and quality. I always felt I was getting a quality product and craftsmanship. They delivered the estimate when they promised. They had the vanity completed when they promised and installed promptly. I would highly recommend them to anyone, even my friends.
Description of Work: They built a custom vanity for our bathroom addition. Would highly recommend again.

We were first time homeowners with no knowledge of remodeling whatsoever. We had interviewed a few other people for the job, but had not found anyone that inspired confidence. We initially contacted Black and Son's about the woodwork only, but we had such a positive interaction with Andy that we asked him if he would take on the whole project. His company has only recently started doing full remodels - previously they focused on cabinetry. We had an entirely positive experience with Andy in spite of some fairly stressful circumstances. (Our son was born prematurely in the midst of the remodel!) Andy is someone who exudes competence and inspires trust. He was very patient with us and helped us define the scope of our project and make several important choices. Other contractors we dealt with were quick to tell us what we should do (i.e., "toss that old woodwork and get new"). Andy always gave us the information we needed and respected our decisions. As it turned out, having him strip our beautiful old woodwork was actually cheaper than replacing it! Andy subcontracted out the gutting of the upstairs, the electrical, the insulation, the drywall, and the floors. He has lived and worked in the area for most of his life and has an excellent knowledge of local contractors. We were very satisfied with the work done by all of them. Andy pulled the whole project together on fairly short notice due to the impending birth of our child. He was incredibly prompt about sending us quotes from the various subcontractors and answering any questions we had. Much of our correspondence was done by email which I found very helpful. The contract he drew up for us was very clear and spelled out every expense. Andy was on-site for an hour or two each day and did a good job of overseeing the work. He always made sure the subcontractors left everything tidy (we were living in the house at the time) and he kept us updated on progress. We were most impressed with the work that Andy and his team did stripping and refurbishing all of the original woodwork (windows, molding, paneled doors). Due to the sagging of the house over time and a change in the thickness of the drywall, there were lots of alterations to the woodwork needed (e.g. a cabinet rebuild and reframing doorways). The woodwork was all painted (lead paint). Andy and Aaron took out all the woodwork, stripped it, refinished it and attached the original fixtures. The craftsmanship is fantastic and turned out better than we had hoped. The project ran only slightly over on time (although we had a very aggressive schedule to begin with) but came in right on budget. We would highly recommend Black & Sons for any woodwork and also for contracting. We had a very positive experience.
Description of Work: Andy and his team took on the remodeling of the entire upstairs of our 1915. We had the ceilings and walls gutted and replaced, the electrical updated, the walls and attic insulated, the lead paint stripped from our windows and doors, and the 100 year old windows repaired. Other than the woodwork, this was done by subcontracters that were selected and managed by Andy.
