Zachow came out an sent a video camera down the drain (pretty interesting, you get a DVD of the journey). The relatively thin cast iron pipe was basically rotten. The solution was to dig it up, something that involves cutting through the concrete slab floor and replacing the pipe.Zachow certainly has some skill with this. A narrow slot was cut in the floor to a point identified in the camera operations with what can only be described as precision sledgehammer work (a concrete saw would apparently raise too much dust). The old pipe was removed and replaced with PVC in a bed of gravel. The dirt replaced an the concrete repaired. Very neatly done, a lot of concrete and pipe had to be hauled up up and down the stairs, with virtualy no mess using drop cloths on the stairs and out off the house. Once the pipe was exposed, some other problems with the T's were noted and these were fixed as well. This is a lot of work, and nothing I would wish on anyone, But the job was nicely done and it was a pleasure to work with these folks..
Description of Work: A problem drain servicing our washing machine and utility tub was periodically clogging--apparently a long standing problem based on the drain snacking tools the previous owner left. I suspected a fairly serious pipe problem and decided to bite the bullet and get this fixed.

I believe Zachow used a sub contractor for this job, but both companies provided great service. I had originally hired another company, but called and canceled after going on Angie's List and reading reviews. I called Zachow and got an estimate and decided to go with them. The first day they showed up about 30 minutes late, which was disappointing because I had to leave work early to meet them. They worked for 2 hours removing roots from my sewer line. At that point they put a camera down the sewer line and discovered the roots were so bad they would have at least 3-4 more hours of work ahead. It was almost 6:00 pm and the line was clear enough that my basement drain was no longer backing up, so they decided to leave and come back the next day. The next morning I spoke with the boss and they agreed to come first thing at 8:30 am. However, when I called my job I could not get off of work that day, so they agreed to come first thing the next day instead. They arrived the next morning and worked for 3 hours and 40 minutes removing the roots. They told me they had never seen it so bad. My neighbor has a willow tree, and I purchased the home about 2 years ago and am unsure if the previous owner ever had the line cleaned out. They believe if it was done, they used a 3 inch "bit" (whatever they're called) instead of a 6 inch in the six inch line, to clear all the roots. Basically they worked a total of 6 hours cleaning my sewer line and I feel gave me a very resonable price. They did clean up the roots and wiped down the floor (with a dirty rag), but I had to actually clean up the sewage around the area they worked. (The basement wall and floor.) Also, the first day they did not completely screw on the cap to the sewer line, so I had to do that myself because the smell of sewer gas was coming up. Overall I was satisfied.
Description of Work: Removed roots from sewer line from house to city main.

They were great. Showed up when they said they would, very polite, got to work right away. The entire job was done in about 3 hours. He showed me exactly what he did when he was done, explained about the new valves that were installed for water and gas, wrote the install date right on the heater, and took away the old water heater. Clean up afterwards and was gone. I would definitely hire them again.

They were great! Randy Jr came out to do the work, was right on time (which was important because I had taken time off of work to have the job done) and explained what he'd do. Old water heater was drained and removed, new one installed, and he cleaned up very thoroughly, even let me know that he turned on my dehumidifier because some water splashed on the floor that he wiped up. When he was done, I asked him how I could troubleshoot a washer hose that was corroded onto the tap (it wouldn't come off despite being soaked with WD-40), and he had the whole tap replaced for me within 15 minutes. I really appreciated the extra effort and his willingness to do the quick job without another trip out.

We have used them before. They charge $120 for an hour. They start charging from $70 for a service call and then the hourly rate. They use a certain tool and we have to pay for that. The price was terrific. They cleared our drain with a big machine, and roto-rooter and everything else. They cleaned everything out. Just as they left, the drain was stocked up again because it was below our garbage disposal. We threw an orange peel in it and they said that's what did it. They said we shouldn't throw an orange peel in the garbage disposal. Their conclusion is that our garbage disposal doesn't work, which I guess might be true and I am not going to check out again because I don't want them to come out again and do our drain. As they did for the second time, they have to go and grind it out again with a long tool at $120 an hour. They were here for two and a half hour. They were very responsive. I am going to check out around the prices.

Receptionist said they subcontract out for sewer/drain clearing services and would try to get us on the list ASAP. She called me back with a 2 hour afternoon time range of when they would arrive. I appreciated their honesty & timeliness in this regard, I had called two other plumbing/drain cleaning companies earlier in the morning and never heard back from either of them. The service tech arrive as expected and checked the cleanouts of all the main lines and found problem was isolated to only the basement floor drain. That was good news! The floor drain was snaked repeatedly and finally cleared. Apparently dirt & corrosion had blocked the trap over time. When I asked for the bill, the service tech said that the company would bill me; he did not know the cost. I was a bit worried about a large bill showing up, but it was only $126, which I consider fair for the job done.
Description of Work: Had water pooling around the basement floor drain in the laundry room - I was worried that whole sewer system would backup 2 days before Thanksgiving when we would have a house full of guests.

I found them on Angie’s List. The service performed by them went very well and it was a pleasant experience. It was a little bit less than $200 for their services. My overall experience with them was very good. Their price was fair. Their quality was excellent. Their responsiveness was very good. When it comes to their punctuality, they were just here as we set it up. Their professionalism was great. I would use them again.

When the plumber arrived he said that the company did not tell him to bring a faucet. He suggested two stores where Zachow & Sons buys their supplies. I got the measurements from him and went to the closest of the two supply stores. The store has one faucet that would fit my sink. At the time I did not know that this faucet was of poor quality. Had I known I would have gone to the other store. The plumber did excellent work on the nipple. He was very pleasant. He then replaced the faucet. After he left when my wife used the sink to wash her hands she noticed two problems. One, the right faucet handle is not on properly. To get the water to flow the handle has to be turned about an extra 1/4 of a turn before any water comes out. The handle is not centered properly. This is not the case with the left handle with which the hot water comes on as soon as the handle is turned. It is easy to see that the handles are not on evenly. The job looks botched, cockeyed. In the Off position the handles are not turned in the same direction. The work does not look professional at all. Two, the water flow from the faucet is very slow and lacks much force. We reported this to the company. They sent Don out to fix the mistakes. My wife was home alone that day. As Don started to correct the problem a couple things happened. First, he said that the company should have sent someone out initially who carried faucets on their truck. He said not everyone carries supplies. Second, my wife verified with him that we would not be charged anything to correct the poor work done by the company. He said, "I don't know. I have to call my boss." He went outside to call and came back in to tell my wife that there would be a charge. We had already gotten a first bill for $433.30! My wife called me at work while Don called his boss. My wife asked to speak to the "Boss" Randy to say there should not be any charge because they were fixing a job not done properly. This is what they had been told when I called to have a second person come out. Randy was very argumentative, unprofessional in his knowledge about the problem as well as impatient. He did not listen to my wife's explanation with attention. He had his mind made up! He said because I had supplied the faucet they were not accountable and that I had gotten a poor quality faucet. As a layperson I do not know one quality of faucet from another. When I went to the store that Zachow & Sons uses, I bought the only one shown to me. Randy kept repeating that the faucet is cheap & is my fault. I then got on the phone with Randy, the Boss. He spoke as though I had as he said "supplied the faucet". We followed his company's instructions in obtaining the faucet the day the first plumber came came. Randy said that Don needed to leave if we didn't want to be charged for his time as he had other jobs to go to. We had Don leave. There was no resolution. I told the boss I would not pay the bill he submitted until the work was done properly. He said he would take me to collections!!! My thought is to take this to court, but my wife who initiated joining Angie's List wants to try this route to resolution. What we want. We want three things. One, to have Zachow & Sons supply free of charge a quality faucet. Two, to have the faucet put on correctly/straight also free of charge. We do not want to pay more than the initial bill. Three, Zachow & Sons to present themselves in a professional manner. As they are professionals I don't think I should have to explain what that means. I prefer to see INITIATIVE on their part showing us & you(Angie's List) they are a topnotch company that does a job they can be proud of & treat every customer as though they would like return business. But it means making things right: the work itself & an apologetic & respectful attitude towards us. What they would offer any customer they respect! Thank you. I hope you will contact the company to help resolve this. I have been hoping they would do the right thing before we had to take action.
Description of Work: The company sent a plumber to replace broken nipples in wall for kitchen sink faucet and replace kitchen sink faucet. That was what I requested, but Zachow & Sons did not send a truck that carries supplies as some of their trucks do. Therefore the plumber did not have a faucet. Also the plumber did not have an EYE for how the work should look when finished. At a minimum the faucet handles have to look even, both turned in the same direction when off.

Response from WM A Zachow & Sons Inc
The member called our company on the morning of 10/14/11. I took the call and he had told me that he hired a plumber the day prior. The plumber busted the piping in the wall and couldn’t make the repair. His water was turned off at this point. He told me his circumstance and even though we were totally booked that day, I pulled a plumber off a job and got him to his residence within 1-1/2hrs from the call. We gave him good service and got the water back on in the house. He had an old fashioned cast iron kitchen sink that hangs on the wall. We might put a kitchen sink faucet like that in every 5 yrs because there are not that many sinks like that around anymore. My plumber informed him that he did not have a faucet like that on his truck. He said he would run to get a faucet while the plumber was making the necessary repairs that the other plumber could not make the prior day. No time was lost and when he returned with a faucet he picked out and it was installed immediately. After the plumber installed his faucet, everything was working fine and water was back on in the house. The next day, he called that no water was coming out of the faucet, so I sent my repair man back to see what the problem was. Sometimes in an older home with old galvanized lines, rust particles can get stuck after water has been turned off. Everything was working fine the prior day. My plumber informed his wife that the lines to the kitchen would need to be blown back in order to open piping. The plumber informed her there would be a charge for this probably 15 minutes labor. She told my plumber to wait and called her husband who in turn called me, discussing the extra charge involved. Mean while as this was taking place, my plumber was standing there for 1/2hr which I’m paying him for. Pg 1 or 2 In closing, He was a first time client which I will not do work for again. Our business was started by my grandfather Wm.A.Zachow 1938. My father and uncles ran the business and now I am and 2 cousins. Fourth generation is also aboard with my son and nephew. We have been serving the Metro Milwaukee area for a long time and have been Angies #1 plumbing co for many years. I think nothing would make him happy thus that’s probably why the first plumber left the job and left him with no water for his household. Sincerely, Wm.A.Zachow & Sons, Inc. Randy L. Zachow Randy L. I thought their proposal price was very fair. We also got a quote from someone else but these were cheaper. We liked the plumbing part a lot because the plumbers were professional and did a great job. They installed a new bath tub for us and it went very well. As part of the service we actually had a tile put in as well around the tub and that we felt took a bit longer than it should have. It ended up spreading out over a week. A few points that they said it would be done earlier had ended up being delayed but it was the sub contractor of WMA Zachow who did that.

The three toilets in our 74-year-old home no longer worked properly no matter what minor tank repairs we made, and all or them used a lot of water. At Randy Zachow's suggestion, we selected and bought our own replacement toilets. We bought three American Standard Cadet water-saving toilets from Home Depot. (Randy had suggested Kohler toilets, but we were unable to find any with the 14-inch rough-in we needed.) Zachow responded promptly when I called for installation. The plumber picked up the toilets from Home Depot, came on the date and time planned, and took only about four hours to remove the old toilets and install the new ones. He cleaned up after himself very well, too. The whole operation went very smoothly, and the new toilets are perfect. We've used Zachow as our plumber for many years and have always been more than happy with their work.

Called the night before and asked them to come in the morning to address the stopped up kitchen sink drain and they confirmed. He arrived at 7:45 and was finished by 8:15. I called several places for an estimate on a new water heater. Zachow was right in the ballpark and could do the work right away. They came that afternoon to look at the job and were back the next day with the new hot water heater. It was installed with pipes and connections updated. When they came for the estimate, I asked about different types of water heaters, specifically the new tankless type. After asking about the water usage in the house, they said it wouldn't be the best use of my money. I appreciated the honesty. The water heater I ended up with was less than the kind I inquired about. They were professional, on time and on budget. It was a great experience and I have recommended them to several friends.
