Over the Top Roofing & Construction

We did not get any services in terms of a repair. No tarp was laid down even temporarily while we continue to wait for an estimate. This is in spite of rain still occurirng over the last few days.

Showed up on time with huge crew and got straight to work. These guys don't mess around. Old roof was off the house in less than 45 minutes. There were a couple of rotted decking sheets that were replaced, and then they got straight to work on installing the ice guard (6'), felt, valleys, etc. New roof went on wicked fast. Clean up was superb. They were done on 4 hours. These guys are awesome. I know enough to know that they did it right. Not the cheapest, and not the most expensive, but the quality of the work is spot on. Recommend.

The gentleman who does their estimates came to the house and was very nice and enthusiastic. He promised us an estimate by the end of the day. He did not show up. He came to the house again two days later and said that he needed more measurements for the estimate and would have it by the end of the week. However, he didn't not show up once again. The business owner tried to remedy the situation and explained that the gentlemen I had previously been working with was a brand new employee with little experience. He apologized for the inconvenience and did everything that he could to make up for his previous lack of response.

Prior to the start of the project we sat down with Brad James, from over the top, to discuss the responsibilities of the subcontractors. Also, at the meeting, was the architect, electrician, a facility manager, and the owner of the demo company. Brad, in front of all these witnesses declared that once there framing crew started they would be 100% responsible for water sealing the house with tarps. After the meeting, we felt we were in good hands. Everything seemed very professional. The first few days of work I noticed the framers had no idea what they were doing. The "foremen" Kevin at one point asked the architect, "are you going to kick me off the job because I don't know what I'm doing." Someone else on site told me he mentioned he is a finish carpenter and doesn't really know what he's doing. The list goes on, but you get the point. The end of day three there was 1/8 of the new floor in place. I'd say they had a good 2 days because there was a half day delay due to architectural changes. To make my point, the new crew we hired, after firing Over The Top, spent one day fixing what Over The Top did wrong, and finished the entire new floor in 2 days. After the third day Over The Top finished for the day, and put a ripped up, tattered, tarp over our house with no roof on it. I had earlier that day dropped off 3 brand new heavy duty tarps, and told them to use them for sealing the house. I was ignored, and sent a text to Brad claiming we would not be liable for water damage because his crew used the old, visually tattered, tarp. This was confirmed by Brad minutes late, and I was told they taped it and there will be no problem. That night our house was rained into for hours. We have to replace most of the drywall, our hard wood floors, etc. I told this to Brad and he said they would take care of it. After the water restoration individual assessed the damage, Brad began to become visually nervous. After a meeting with the owner of Over The Top, suddenly everything Brad told us weeks before had reversed. Even with documentation, and 6 witnesses, suddenly Brad never said they were to be responsible for keeping water out of our home. The same night of the flooding, he told me he had to leave that day at noon to get his new boat registered for the weekend. Suddenly, that did not happen either, when it was brought up in front of his boss. The lying is the worst part of this whole ordeal. The stress brought my pregnant wife to tears and this for me is unforgivable. It's one thing to make a mistake. We can always repair drywall and floors, being lied to hurts worse, and having those responsible not step up with the insurance claim is ridiculous. I hope this never happens to anyone else. We have a large and complex roof. We were concerned about rotten wood under the shingles. We did not want to shingle over the old (done in 1993). We also needed new gutters and really didn't want to mess with any of this any time in the future. They gave us a fair quote with several options for gutters, ridge vent replacements and other services. We decided, given what we knew about the other homes in the subdivision, to replace everything from the ridge vents and flashing to the gutters. The price was actually right in between two other quotes we got but the deal on the gutters was the deciding factor. Here are the real factors why we are so pleased with Over the Top: The dumpster was delivered the morning they started and removed the very next day, as promised. The shingles were replaced and there was no need to replace any decking (whew!). They do allow a certain amount of replacement costs with the quote. The cost for the seamless gutters was greatly reduced ($2300 for the whole house) because it's easier to add the gutters at the time the shingles are being replaced. The cost was a no-brainer. The crew was quick, professional and courteous. They pointed out issues not related to the roof but ones we should be aware of (dry rot around the dormer windows for example) and gave us advice on replacing it safely. They cleaned up after they were done. Did I mention that dumpster was in our driveway for a sum total of 36 hours? That's pretty cool. Overall, we loved the job they did and have gotten numerous compliments from the neighbors about how nice it looks (the color is so pretty!) and how fast the work was completed. The company went Over the Top with their service, price and quality and we've recommended them to others.

They are very good. They cleaned up well.

I am a busy person. They came when I wasn't home to look at the condition of my roof and give me and estimate. Their proposal was extremely detailed which is why we chose to go with them.

My experience was very good. They were very professional. The technician was very thorough and caught a lot of things that others did not. They were very clean and they did the job in one day. They were great!

It took them a month to finish something that should have taken a week. We were given a wrong estimate. They butchered part of our roof so we had to finish up some of the work ourselves. I am glad my experience with them is over. When I called repeatedly to get them to come out, they said they had other bigger jobs to worry about.

My experience turned out great! They did really fine work. They did send me a receipt that looked very legel and it was a little odd to me.

They seemed thorough and I had a good referall. I felt their price was fair. They did not seem to seal the roof off completely. I had to have somoene else do the work. However, I did not give them a chance to come back and fix the work.

I wouldn't recommend them. They did a shoddy job on the roof, and it continued to leak. They had horrible customer service, and they basically lied to us several times, it was almost to the point that we were suing them. They then came and fixed it but after many fights. It seems to be working fine now. Their pricing was pretty comparable to everybody else.

They were here at 11am-by 2pm they were done, he looked at it, didn't like it, and redid it. I had a flat roof to beginning, the one they put on was a 2-3 dimension roof, so I thought there was something wrong with it, I called him and they came out, and explained to me from going to a flat to a 2-3 dimension is going to be a little higher.I was very impressed, very comfortable with them.

They were done in one day as they stated. They were very courteous and did a very good job. I am very pleased with their work.

They were here on the day they said they would be. They seemed to have done a pretty good job on the roof but there was one part of the job they said they were going to do but then he said he wasn’t a carpenter so he wasn’t going to replace some rotten wood that was up there. So they didn’t do that part of the job and I never could understand why because it was supposed to be part of the job and they had a list of things they were going to but when I pointed it out to him, he said he wasn’t a carpenter and that was it. They weren’t the most expensive or the cheapest. I would use them again knowing that I would really have to watch what they are doing and make sure that they are doing everything that they said they were going to do.

We asked several companies for an estimate on replacing missing shingles on our roof. This company was prompt and professional with their response. It was a tough decision to select a company based on cost and availability to do the work. We chose another company, but would consider this company again if we need work in the future.

In September of 2010 we solicited several bids for replacement of our roof because of the curling shingles. We chose Over the Top Roofing because of their lower estimate for the job, and because they were the only one who recognized that the curling problem was because they were CertainTeed Organic Shingles, and they advised us that they could help us get a settlement from CertainTeed. They replaced the roof was rather quickly, and communication by phone and e-mail was good most of the time. During the project I did have some difficulty getting an answer to a question about the chimney design, and our request to keep the stones from the old chimney was not communicated to the workers in a timely manner. Clean-up around the house was very good, except for a handful of nails that were left in front of the garage door on the first day. Our primary complaint about the project is that WE HAVE NEVER RECEIVED ANY SETTLEMENT FROM CERTAINTEED, even after four years. We submitted the claim form to CertainTeed with some help from Over the Top, and they assured us that they submitted the required pictures of the roof and the shingle sample. When CertainTeed requested a second submission of the claim in mid-October, 2010, I contacted Over the Top and David Mattheis told me he had hand-delivered the pictures and shingle sample to the CertainTeed representative. Since the claim form stated specifically that "claims take time so please be patient" we did not follow up on the claim after the second submission for about a year and a half, during which we heard nothing from CertainTeed. My electronic inquiries to the CertainTeed claims administrator were ignored over the next two years, so I finally sent a certified letter to CertainTeed asking about the claim last May (2014). They responded with a boiler-plate form stating that they had not received the required pictures or shingle sample. I then contacted David Mattheis about CertainTeed's reply. He responded by telephone and again assured me he had hand-delivered the pictures and shingle sample to the CertainTeed representative. I mailed him a copy of the relevant documents a week later, and he says he passed them on to the CertainTeed representative who promised to "see what he could do." He also has not heard anything from CertainTeed for five months. Bottom line, the work was good and communication was fair until after the job was completed, but we have not gotten the warranty for the shingles that were installed or any settlement from CertainTeed, even after four years! The reason for the lack of any settlement is likely that of the CertainTeed representative who apparently lost the submitted documentation. David says he has not had trouble with any other settlement claim with CertainTeed, but they continue to deny our claim unless we can provide a sample of the defective shingles from our roof. Note: Updated 10/13/14 after a follow-up call from David Mattheis @ Over the Top Roofing Note: Update 11/06/14 -- David Mattheis came to the house and delivered the warranty for the shingles they installed. He is again working with the CertainTeed representative to expedite a settlement on the defective shingles.

I was very happy with the work that they did and their estimates were in line with the other estimates that I had received. He was prompt and showed up on time. He was considerate and checked on his employees often. They completed the work quickly, the whole job was completed in just a few hours. He told me before he started the job that it might be necessary to change some boards on my roof if they were related to my leak issues, but as it turned out he was honest with me and said that the replacement boards wouldn't be needed. I would recommend them to anyone.
