This project took over 5 weeks start to finish - significantly longer than expected or quoted. Even with weather delays, there were days when we just didn't know if Dave and his crew were coming to work that day. The communication was poor - with one exception: when he wanted to get paid he was a great communicator. At the beginning of the project, he dropped a Bobcat off in my neighbor's backyard and left it there for 1.5 weeks. After Kettler began to rip out the driveway, and after several days of not seeing Dave, I called and asked for a project status. He said he had been in an accident. I asked if he was ok. He said yes, but his truck was totaled. I asked if he was able to work, and if he had the equipment he needed. He said he would have to let me know. He came by two days later with a huge rented dump truck which he left parked in my ripped out driveway for 2.5 weeks. Another time, I was working from home with my kids when they had a day off school and I was on a conference call. I had no idea he was coming that day. He knocked and knocked on the door and called my phone a number of times. I whispered to my son to go outside and tell Mr. Kettler I was on a call. Dave told my son that I needed to move my car so he wouldn't "lose time." This after not coming to the job site for days! When I noticed that after the first part of the driveway was poured, during a rainstorm, water at the top of the driveway near the garage was draining toward the patio, Dave told me they had read the topo survey, but had decided on a "happy medium" instead of following it to the letter. He had not spoken to me about any changes to our original agreement to follow the topo survey I had paid for. Finally, when I received my final bill, Dave added $225 to the invoice for "Village Permit Fees." I called the Village and they told me the permit fee was $25 and that there was a $200 refundable inspection fee that Kettler would receive after final inspection. They said this was not the first time they had received feedback about this contractor. When I passed this information on to my neighbors, I learned they had already paid Kettler the additional $225 for "permit fees."
Description of Work: Remove existing 1100 sq. ft.driveway from garage to city sidewalk and haul away. (City sidewalk and apron had just been replaced by Village) Poured 6" concrete driveway over 4" stone. I had paid for a topographical survey from a separate surveyor before the work began and asked that the grading on the driveway follow the recommendations of the topo. We have a shared driveway with the neighbor, so we had Kettler do both jobs at the same time. Their job was similar but with the addition of a poured concrete patio in their backyard. For comparison purposes, we each have a single side of the driveway, so it would be the same as a typical suburban 2-car wide driveway. They contracted and paid Kettler separately so their comments are not included here.
