SPS Roofing Systems

This company charged an elderly couple that lived in a different state $44,000 to replace a flat roof in Two Rivers. After inspecting the roof for a few minutes it was clear that none of the decking the customer paid for to have replaced was actually replaced. It was still spongy and rotten under the new membrane. Unfortunately they lived in a different state and were unable to see the finished product before they paid their invoice.

A couple of days after a tornado did major damage to our community including some major tree damage and minor roof damage to our property, I called SPS Roofing and told them of our situation. I was told on the phone that someone would be out to take a look within a few days. As promised a couple of days later someone came out and spoke with my wife, and told her that it was a relatively small repair and should only cost a few hundred dollars. He did not climb on the roof to inspect but said he would send an estimate within a few days. It is now a month later and we have yet to hear a peep out of SPS Roofing. What upsets me the most is that they didn't have the courtesy to tell us that apparently this job was too small for them to bother with. They will not hear from me again, and plenty of people will hear my story!

A few years ago, I had used SPS Roofing on a commercial job, and was happy with the finished job. Recently, I called them for my own house which required replacement of shingles. It was a smooth transaction. I selected from a sample of shingles. The crew arrived within two weeks, removed the old shingles, and replaced with new more attractive shingles. The job took two days. They did a complete cleanup leaving no trash or debris. Two sattelite dish antennas had to be repointed, which was professionally done, and at no additional charge.

Great job. They also fixed a few boards with no charge. Very happy with them.

They did an absolutely outstanding job replacing my roof during the cold. The workers were personable, reliable, and efficient. When the job was completed the cleanup was exceptional. I couldn't have been happier with the results. If you are considering SPS for a roofing job they are exactly the folks that should be hired. Even when the workers needed to go to another flat of shingles over what was estimated, my final price was no higher than the estimate I was given. That doesn't happen very much in this world anymore, most places would have passed the additional cost on to me and just said that an estimate is just that an estimate.

They responded promptly to our phone calls. Called before arrival and were flexible with us when we needed to change the installation date. Completed the work quickly, professionally and cleaned up the area very well. The worker was professional, confident and experienced.

This job was done because of hail damage in my area. SPS installed a completely new roof for our house and our shed. They also opened the soffits and increased the venitlation. SPS provided a good quote, worked very well with the insurance company and made the entire installation and installation process easy. They showed up when they said they would and completed the job on schedule and budget. Contacting them has been easy and they stand by their work. It has been a few months since the roof was installed. During the first rain storm, we experienced leaking around a vent. SPS came out and fixed it and the damage to the wall immediately. Now that it's winter, we have had 2 more leaks appear (one in the front and one in the back of the house). Both are minor damages along the outer walls. SPS has come out without complaint to investigate these leaks as well. So far, SPS believes they are due to the ice damming from the slush storm we had earlier in the winter (we never had leaks with the previous roof during storms). I will agree that we have a fair amount of ice damning in the gutters and on the lower portion of the roof. However, we had this with the previous roof as well and never had leaks. Due to the leaks, I am unable to provide SPS with an A. I am happy with their service, but I am very dissatisfied with the leak issues we have experienced.

They were eager and great to speak with initially and were quick to come out and do the estimate. Then there was just a drop off with the communication after that. I don't know if this is typically how it works as I have never gotten an estimate on my roof before. But I did not get to look at any shingles or anything, it was all through the mail and phone calls. Just based on this small interaction with them I would rate them a B overall. There was no follow-up or face-to-face. I wouldn't hesitate to get another estimate from them in the future but don't think I am going to go with them because they are a little higher in price.

Nick was very attentive and helpful he answered all of my questions during the quoting process, but he seemed to become less attentive as more work kept him busy. Most of the workers did not appear to be local, and/or were not a part of the regular sps crew based on a comment from one of the crew members. Regardless they were all courteous and professional. They were fast and worked through some poor weather almost finishing in one day. They were a bit messy leaving many roofing nails on our lawn, which I had to call them to come back to clean up after getting a flat tire in my riding mower. Nick quickly paid for the tire. Overall their roofing job looks great and no issues so far. If it were not for the clean up I would have rated them higher. They also were not the cheapest, but I chose to go with them based on their warranty. The downspouts they used are a bit flimsy.

They were very upfront with their estimates. He did not go up the roof at all; he used a GPS sort of technology. It was quite remarkable, but they came up with the same estimate as the others. I had no issues at all. They were not pushy. They gave us the estimate a week later. I thought they were professional.

When I first called about an estimate for repairing my storm damage, the company rep immediately asked for the insurance report with dollar amounts. My insurance adjuster and other articles all say this is a big red flag. When I mentioned this, the rep acted like this was a very strange claim. But to compare, a second company I called specifically said they didn't want to see the insurance numbers until later, but would help if I provided the report with the dollar amounts blacked out (so he could use the same measurements). A third company I talked to never even asked to see the insurance report and took his own measurements - even though he knew it was an insurance job. I declined to provide the insurance papers to SPS and asked for someone to come estimate the damage so I could compare SPS with other companies' bids. Again the response on the other end was one of confusion, but they did agree to send someone out while I was at work. When I returned home, there was an SPS sign stuck in my front yard. I thought this was a little rude without asking first, but figured maybe it was common practice. Turns out this is not common practice. Out of the army of storm chasers who knocked on my door and left door tags, not a single one stuck a sign in my yard. Overall this is still minor but adds to the list of oddities. SPS never called me back after their visit to my house - I waited over a week before calling them. When I finally reached someone, they had no report or estimate for storm damage for my address. This was another red flag - obviously someone stopped since there was a sign in my yard. This led me to wonder how the office handled other, more important material logistics, billing, and records. They offered to have an estimator call me to set up another home visit. He only tried calling once. I left him a message but he never tried calling me (This time I only gave him a day before I tried calling again - I'm sure he was busy but it's still odd for a sales team trying to make an impression). When I reached him, I asked about their workmanship warranty terms and if he could bring a copy when he stopped over. He said it was the company's policy to NOT provide this in writing until at the contract signing, and without signing I couldn't keep the copy. Very alarming considering the other companies I've talked to have readily offered this without me even asking. This is another red flag that 'contractor hiring' articles will caution you to watch for. At this point I told the estimator I wasn't interested in hiring SPS if he couldn't provide the warranty terms - and he simply wished me luck (genuine but he didn't try to make this "right" by offering to talk to a supervisor about making an exception). To put this into context, all the companies I've talked to are LOCAL shops with very good BBB and Angie's List ratings, who have been in business for longer than 15 years. I was very surprised SPS responded the way they did... certainly out of line with the other companies. They seem more interested in the insurance money than anything. I can't blame them really, and maybe their construction crews are better than sales/estimating. I've roofed a few houses and garages myself and it isn't rocket science, so I would think the best area to differentiate a roofing company is with their sales team - which SPS has done but in a negative way. But that's my opinion - feel free to form your own but pay attention to these red flags and don't just look at the Angies list rating. Contrary to Angie's List's concept and policies, it's not very hard for a company to have a few friends or vested employees write positive reports in an effort to put it at the top of a ratings list. As proof of my claim that SPS cherishes their AL rating, SPS may respond with a request for a better grade as they have with their other negative reviews. I feel the best way to address a review like this is to improve in the areas mentioned to avoid future negative reviews.

I did not know who to call for my roof project. I heard about Angies list and gave it a try. I picked SPS roofing because of the good reviews that I saw and because they were a local company. When I contacted SPS, Eric gave me an estimate within 3 days. As soon as I accepted the quote, Eric stopped by and we went over the colors and type of shingle. Eric was very courteous and asked if there was anything else I needed from him. Because I had a lightning strike I wanted the roofers to save the drip edge where the lightning struck the roof and check for damage. He said there would be no problem for them to do that. The roofers showed up in the morning and were very quiet. They put tarps down to protect my deck and my wifes flowers. My house has different levels and valleys and the roofers only stripped what they could get done in a day. (possible rain storm) The roofers were very polite and would ask if they could park in a certain area, use the hose to cool the roof, unload the shingles in a certain area - they only slowed down because I would keep asking them how it was going. After they were done they cleaned all around the house, checked for nails, pieces of old roof, wrappers ect. After completion they wanted me to walk around and check to see if there was anything I did not like and that they would fix it right away. Eric stopped by after and also asked if there was anything that I did not like and that he would get it fixed right away if there was. The drip edge from the lightning strike? The roofers saved it for me without even asking. I would definately use them again as well as recommend them to my friends and family.

After the quoting process was completed, we mutually agreed to delay the start of the project until the winter season to allow the company to keep its workers fully employed, instead of having a layoff as is so common in this industry in the upper Midwest. Once the crews had begun the equipment delivery process and setup, they were at the house daily for the entire day, even through a stretch of below-zero windchills in February! The men on the crews were always professional and most willing to accommodate us and explain the details no matter how busy they were. They were very conscientious, courteous, and proud of their work....this was evident by the almost seamless way they worked together and supported each other. They did an excellent job of minimizing the amount of debris that was generated, thoroughly cleaning the worksite daily before they left. A couple of very minor damages to the house (an inevitable thing on a job our size, in our opinion) were promptly addressed. The final result exceeded our expectations, and we would recommend SPS to anyone.

Excellent experience with SPS. Not everything went smoothly. A sudden rain storm hit after shingles were removed, but before the tar paper was replaced in one section of the house. The damage was very minor thanks to quick thinking and it was the recovery from this mishap that was legendary. The crew was always upbeat and gave the impression that they enjoyed working on our house. After removing two layers of shingles, they described the freshly cleared surface as their canvas to paint with new shingles. It looks awesome. The gutters were replaced very quickly, in fact we missed the actual work time and some minor adjustments to the down spouts was needed, but that was done quickly and efficiently. Overall, a satisfying experience.

Nick from SPS sent out Erik to look at the roof and give us an estimate. Erik was very professional and provided us with a variety of options for our roof replacement. He explained the job in detail regarding SPS procedures for roof replacement and was up front about any other problems which may occur and costs once the roof was removed (such as finding rotten deck boards, etc.) The estimate and quote were very detailed, so we knew exactly what was entailed with the costs. We received the estimate in a timely manner, and work was scheduled to be done in 1-2 weeks. The crew at SPS were excellent! They arrived promptly each day and worked extremely hard. The weather was very hot (in the 90's), and the crew kept working taking very few breaks. They made sure our roof was secure each day of the job in case it rainned, which was a concern for us. We found the crew to be very professional, and they answered all of our questions about the materials, work being done and any other questions we had. It was refreshing to see the crew of SPS take such pride in their workmanship! You certainly do not see that everyday. The crew also kept our yard extremely clean during the job. They treated our home as if it was their own, going out of their way to make sure the job was done right, and experience for us very good. We are very happy with the job SPS Roofing Systems did with our total roof replacement. The quote that SPS provided us with was exactly what we were charged for the job. No hidden costs or surprises. SPS takes pride in their workmanship and are true professionals you can trust. We definitely recommend them to others.

A couple of months after the roof was put on I realized they routed an exhaust incorrectly from my furnace into my attic. They didn't take anything off my bill but they did fix it. It caused other problems though.

Lost a dozen roof shingles due to a storm. Another roofing company (recommended by a neighbor) claimed they would do the job but a week later hadn't shown up - and refused to predict when they would. Clearly my small job wasn't a priority for them! I called SPS based on their Angie's List recommendation. They assessed the likely cost of the job over the phone, and their friendly crew was there the next day - and appeared to do a very professional and complete fix of the problem (replaced missing shingles, checked for any other damage, etc.). They left us a bill and were fine having us send them the payment by mail (didn't take credit card and we didn't have a check handy at the time). Great experience. I specifically called to compliment them for the service, and they indicated if they took care of me on a small job, their hope was I'd think of them for bigger jobs. Great philosophy, and reflects excellent customer focus. Really appreciate this!

I chose them because they had a really good rating and the people who gave them poor ratings didn't even use them. They were very knowledgeable and any question I asked they had an answer for it.

This company is great! Another roofer began the project then disappeared creating a mess with our family and our insurance company. SPS knew the history and stepped in anyway without reservation. Their estimator is intelligent, professional, and funny, and the entire team was great to work with. They warned me ahead of time about potential problems so that I wouldn't be blind-sided by additional expenses (fortunately none developed), and they kept on a strict schedule. The crew worked hard with few breaks and were polite and pleasant. I have only good things to say about this local company, and I recommend them without hesitation. If you ever need a roof, this is the company to contact.

The price was fair and the work was done in a professional manner. We did get delayed a couple of months because they were backlogged with emergency work (which is understandable) however as some polite feedback for them I had to call them and ask, they did not call me to inform me of the backlog. A small hassel that is meant just as some constructive feedback to help grow the SPS business. I would use them and their services again. The crew was so nice, I even bought them lunch everday for how hard they work. The work was done on time and within budget. Thank you SPS. SPS also worked out a reasonable payment plan with us.

I would use SPS Roofing Systems again.

Failure to provide promised quote. Did not return calls. Main office would not forward info to salesman. Don't waste your time

The flat roof on our sunroom was wind damaged in the fall. We requested estimates from other roofers, with very poor response. After checking Angies list we contacted SPS Roofing systems. They sent an estimator right away. I was impressed with the estimator throughout this process. When the work was started the crews appeared skilled and knowledgable, and did a fine job. I recommend SPS Roofing Systems and would use them again.
