We had great communication up until the contract was signed. After that it was poor. I feel like I was managing the construction, constantly having to contact R Tews to find out what was going on. It appeared to me that we were only scheduled after I made contact with them, week after week. We had many things go wrong, some things were fixed after I pointed the mistakes out. Some of my largest complaints are the flooring, ( the contractor mis calculated the tiles needed to repair an area that was going to need replacements, causing us to have to tear out all of the kitchen and dining room flooring that we had just recently installed) Windows ( the top ones were framed 3 different times, only to end up with a design that I did not contract for) foundation, (they tried to repair our foundation, they did a terrible job, months later the repair failed and we had water in our basement?.We have never had a wet basement before) the lack of communication, ( I can't begin to tell you how horrible it was, I truly believe the construction manager had too meanprojects going on and we were not a priority. They also demanded payment in full, prior to repairing many things that they had promised to fix.

We had serious problems from the beginning. The GM did a terrible job communicating with his sub contractors and us. They had to do a lot of things 2 and 3 times before being done properly. They damaged our foundation and are refusing to make good on it. There were many miscalculations costing us more money than we had planned ei: flooring and windows. They also tried to charge us for equipment we did not have. The finishing guys did a good job.

Response from R. Tews Construction & Design, Inc.
Concerns & Resolutions For over 25 years, we at R. Tews Construction have built our relationships and reputation on high quality materials and service. We greatly appreciate feedback, as it gets absorbed internally – throughout the company and the sub-contractors – and we use that information to do better. Any experience that is less than ideal is of high importance and concern. R. Tews addressed and resolved these customer concerns in reference to the addition/remodel project: 1. Patio door: The weather stripping at the junction of the latch was gapped 1/8” from the frame. Under warranty, the Anderson service technician disassembled the door, installed all new weather stripping, and made necessary adjustments for a tight fit. The customer acknowledged being 100% satisfied after the service. 2. Yard work: The addition was on the back of the home, which required construction vehicles (concrete truck and excavator) to travel across the side lawn and into the back yard. At the end of work, black dirt was brought in and hand-raked to smooth out the areas where the construction vehicles traveled, at no charge to the homeowner. R. Tews Construction adheres to all construction and remodeling laws, including the Right to Cure. Details of this law, and others, can be read at: http://wisbuildblog.org/right-to-cure-law-use-it-or-lose-it/

We had this done about 14 years ago so some of the details escape me now but after investigating and talking with several remodelers we decided to go with Randy Tews. We had a ranch style house that we had him do an addition to the front and a 3 season room on the back. We also essentially gutted the main floor of the house and rebuilt it with larger rooms and a new kitchen/dining areas. 14 years later we are very happy with the quality of work that was done. There was lot of reinforcement of new foundation done when as they were digging for it small amount of water was found and we have not had any settling of that new portion of the house. My only complaint at the time of our project was timeliness of the progress. At times a week or two would go by with nothing getting done on our house. I think that they were also doing some work for RCU at the time and if that project needed more workers then we did not get anything done on ours. We were living in our basement when the remodeling was going on in relatively cramped quarters so we were anxious to have daily progress and communication about when things would be going again were limited. There were a couple items where we wanted something done a certain way and changes made along the way so some cost overruns but nothing that wasn't explained ahead of time. Overall we were very happy with the quality of the finished product and would recommend R.Tews for anyone thinking of remodeling.
Description of Work: We had an addition to our house put on and interior remodel done, essentially gutted the main floor of our house and re did it.

R Tews Construction and Design were lower than I thought they were going to be. Their offices are beautiful and they have lots of samples of stuff that they've done. They were here when they said they were going to be here.
Description of Work: They gave a quote to remodel the kitchen and do some exterior work on my windows. I'm having an induction installed and a new microwave too.

It could not have been a more positive experience. They listened to our ideas, made helpful suggestions, revised plans as we revised our ideas. They provided a detailed and accurate estimate of the cost as well as a reasonable timeline for the actual construction. R. Tews own employees are terrific. They are precise and take great pride in their work. They are polite, neat, respectful of our time, and inevitably clean up before they leave for the day. They are not happy until we are. In addition, the subcontractors R. Tews uses adhere to the same standards. We could not be happier. We had used them for an earlier, larger project, and after that experience didn't even consider another contractor for this project. We would recommend them without hesitation (and have done so). Some of our friends who had previous remodeling experiences with other contractors had warned us that the remodeling would try our patience and be a generally unpleasant experience. Nothing could be further from the truth with R. Tews. From the planning through the construction to the final walk-through everything went extremely well.
Description of Work: We remodeled a rather nondescript hallway, laundry area, and coat closet as well as a master bedroom walk-in closet. R. Tews staff helped us refine our ideas to create a more open and usable area including a laundry sink which we hadn't had. They also designed extensive custom cabinets which one of their subcontractors built. We did much the same thing with the master bedroom closet. We added considerable storage in both areas.

I was blown away by the ideas the designer came up with. She figured out my preferred method of communication (email) and numerous emails were exchanged over the course of our discussions. They were extremely prompt and professional and I never got the feeling of being pushed into something. The designer did a lot of leg work for what I was charged.
Description of Work: I specifically wanted design services for a kitchen remodel so I could get an idea of what my project would cost and I could begin saving for it. I was pleasantly surprised they even offered the service without a firm committment to use their company.

Overall, it was a very good experience. Jessica is second to none at her trade. Together with Randy Tews, they thoughtfully created and carried out a design that meets our needs, desires, and living style. We were always comfortable with the staff of R Tews. They are very skilled at and proud of what they do and it shows. They were respectful of our home and family. I appreciated the and quot;easinessand quot; of having them in our home during the remodeling. In summary, we are delighted with the high quality remodeling work that we had done by R Tews. He has a wonderful and skilled crew who take care of you and your home through the whole process. The end result is more than we could have hoped for when we started the project.
Description of Work: We contracted R Tews to remodel our kitchen, bathroom, and family room. They also rebuilt our deck. This involved the design, demolition, and rebuilding of those areas. R Tews' designer, Jessica, listened to our wants/needs and skillfully came up with a design that incorporated our desires with her design knowledge. The R Tews staff then carried out the demolition of our old kitchen, bathroom, and deck. Plumbing and electrical were updated. New flooring and cabinets were installed. The deck was rebuilt in the same configuration but with composite material. The result is a remodel that is both beautiful and functional.

Because of the openness allowed for creative ideas, this project definitely reflected the clients personality and improved their daily living. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and support during the remodel.

Excellent from start to finish. The men were always on time and cleaned up after themselves. The job was completed early. Randy Tews was onsite on a regular basis. He was very picky, even more so than us in some situations. Always returned phone calls, always came to meetings on time. He followed through on every thing we agreed to and the quality of the work was excellent. I would highly recommend them. We used them for two more remodel jobs on our home after that and then had him build a brand new home this past year( the biggest project time and money wise yet) and couldn't be happier. He has a great website with numerous videos and photos of work done and many letters of recommendation, our being one of them.

The problem I had was to get the work done properly. Things were supposed to be done, that were not done and it cost me above what was estimated; so I don't recommend them to anyone, even though some of the finished product was good. With all the problems I had with them, I don't recommend them to people I know. I had quite a bit of remodeling done. I was without a kitchen for a couple of months. Supposedly, others projects were going on and I would have to call them. They would say that they would come over here and finish this. I actually had to remind them about the things in the original contract. Basically, they had other people doing all the work, but there was no one really managing it other than myself and that wasn't what I hired someone for remodeling. I had enough on my plate. I thought it was his responsibility to make sure his people were doing the job. They cut through the basement to make the window well and the guy almost killed himself because we have gas line engine. I came home for lunch and the outside alarms were going. The guy ended up in ER overnight in the hospital. I had to really watch some of the charges. It was a pretty big job.

Response from R. Tews Construction & Design, Inc.
Our company strives to make sure all of our customers are taken care of and we believe honesty is the best policy. We are somewhat bewildered by this report. R. Tews Construction is very sorry for the way this Member feels about her remodeling experience. We always try to make all of our customer’s remodels goes as smooth as possible. The contract was signed in January of 2005. The work started within 30 days of signing. In addition to the original scope of work there was multiple change orders signed, the last in April. The changes orders alone added 22 days to the project itself which took about 6 months. Every time a change order is signed; new materials have to be ordered. Once the product arrives, R. Tews employees and subcontractors are then rescheduled accordingly. We do perform several projects at one time so scheduling can sometimes come into play especially when customers have additional change orders. The way R. Tews Construction operates its company is that we have our own prep, framing, and finish trim employees. There are licensed subcontractors who do perform work for R. Tews such as plumbing, electrical, and HVAC and this is required by State Law. These are subcontractors that are skilled in their profession, and we have a good working relationship with them. The original scope of work in the basement included saw cutting for reworking the plumbing and egress window. This can be a challenging procedure in a confined environment such as the basement. Precautions are taken for all employees during this procedure. Smoke alarms can sometimes be tripped because of the dust and smoke from the saw cutting. The employee was never admitted to ER as stated nor did he have any ill or adverse effects from saw cutting. Getting fresh air outside would be normal after being confined in the basement saw cutting because of wearing a dust filter mask and the fumes of the saw. When Members’ kitchen was down for her remodel, R. Tews purchased a temporary sink and installed it for her convenience so she would have a working sink to help ease one of the challenges of not having working kitchen. We have an open book policy at R. Tews construction and we do a final job cost breakdown at the end of every project and sit down with the client to review, so every client is aware of costs. R. Tews also will gladly furnish any invoice copies to the customer upon request. We bill invoice plus Profit and overhead so there are not any hidden costs for allowance items such as plumbing, electrical, flooring, and HVAC etc. A customer’s final selections of product can add additional costs for their project. This is an overage for the project and an additional cost to the customer.
