Jan fit this major deck/patio repair into his schedule when things fell through with another contractor (I preferred Jan, but the other bid was lower - turns out, it was an unrealistic bid and the guy kept putting off the work for 8 months before I realized that he was never going to do it!). Jan, Randy, Dan (the concrete guy) and everyone who works with?this company?was very pleasant and professional - and they got the work done when they said they would!? This is the second job that Jan has taken care of for me and I am very pleased with the work he has done.?Would hire him again in an instant.?
Description of Work: Second level wood deck had raised up due to frost heave on the supporting posts. The posts had been installed through the first level cement patio and when the posts raised through the concrete, the patio had cracked. Jan Borgwardt and Company removed the cement patio, replaced the posts and re-leveled the deck to the correct position and re-poured the patio.

+ 2 moreThe time to start the work took a few weeks longer than promised, and only got kick started when we inquired about the start date after the promised date had elapsed, but once started, it was completed within a two week period, which would have been one week, weather permitting. Prior to the work starting, we had some leakage occurring with one of the areas that were to be repaired, and their team were responsive and came out the same day and temporarily fixed. The team was capable and handled water damage found upon replacing the windows without any problem. Cost was 30% higher than what was estimated. Although, there was damage that would not have been known, when asked to provide an itemized invoice, it simply identified "Replaced a lot of rotting wood and insulation". My opinion was that the total should have been lower but without any itemized details as were requested,it's impossible to know. The payment was made promptly, yet took a month to process, and that was after inquiring after two weeks. In general the work done was excellent, but more than was expected, even given the additional work that was needed. I would consider these folks again, but given the cost overruns, lack of details provided, and delay in starting the project, I will definitely consult other contractors first.
Description of Work: 1. Replaced 4 windows and rotting framing, set exposed exterior areas with alumuinum shielding, and sealed/falshed windows 2. Removed vinyl siding and replaced water damaged sheathing and insulation adjacent to windows and replaced vinyl siding 3. Repaired / replaced wood of rooftop areas for windows, installed rubber topping, and sealed appropriately 4. Repaired rotting framing underneath one window 5. During the period waiting to work to begin, sealed the roof top area for one of the windows that was leaking into the attic

+ 0 moreJan Borgwardt was super professional from start to finish. Prompt with the estimate and responding to emails, phone calls, and requests throughout the entire time. His recommendations for the layout of the finished space show the expertise that comes from years of experience. Once the project started, everything progressed smoothly and very quickly. His crew (Randy, Mike) and other people he brought in to work on the project (electrician, plumber, drywall, carpet) were all polite, professional, and left everything very clean and orderly. I asked if Jan would make the lower level "look like the rest of the house" as far as molding, closet doors, texture, paint, flooring and he really came through. The finished product has received rave reviews from family and friends who have visited over the holidays. They are also amazed at how quick and hassle-free the whole experience was for us. I highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: Very pleased with our new finished lower level! It expands our living area by about 800 sq. ft. and also adds a 4th bedroom and bathroom with shower.

Description of Work: We called Borgwardt because of his reputation on Angie's List. We did not have time to shop around for estimates as we needed a staircase rebuilt immediately (broken treads). Mr. Borgwardt responded right away, and made an extraordinary effort to squeeze us into his busy schedule, to help us prior to having guests at holiday time when the stairs would be in greater use. His crew rebuilt the treads and risers to a better standard than the original construction. It was done timely, neatly, and exactly as promised in the proposal.

+ 4 moreWe wanted to get two projects done simultaneously (living/dining room downstairs with new walls, windows, doors, ceilings, and then an upstairs bathroom remodel). Hoping to have both done within three months of the initial consult, we hired Borqwardt for the downstairs and Home Depot for the upstairs. Borgwardt performed flawlessly and completed the downstairs (except for finish work done after our planned event-as worked out between us) quickly and professionally, with perfect coordination among their subcontractors and flexibility to the problems of the job (keeping me informed so that I could get the electrical and heating work done that I was doing). For comparison, Home Depot didn't even get started until AFTER 3 months (except for some rough plumbing that we had to get them to show up for while the downstairs was open), and then they screwed up, including leaks that ruined the beautiful work downstairs (which Borgwardt is NOW repairing properly and quickly.) THANKS JAN!! Dos and Don'ts : Do hire Jan for any job you want done right. Don't ever do an upstairs bathroom AFTER remodeling the downstairs, regardless of what parties the spouse is planning to have in the downstairs. Always do the leak-prone bits first, and DON'T hire Home Depot.
Description of Work: Tear out, modification, insulation, drywall replacement, primed, new doors and windows of two rooms in an old farmhouse. They also came in to do more work upon request to replace another door.

+ 0 moreJan and his crew were very friendly and communicative. Jan was very conscientious of the overall appearance and functionality. When he saw something he didn't think looked right or would not be very functional, he talked to us about it and together we came up with a mutually agreeable alternative. During the remodel process, there were unexpected issues but Jan worked through them all until he got the work done to our satisfaction. Jan made sure during every step we were happy with the work and if we changed the plan, he was okay with it and adjusted accordingly. We had some issues with the dumpster and city ordinances, but Jan took care of it all. All building permits and inspections went fine. Can't say enough good things about Jan and his employees. We are very pleased with the workmanship and overall finished product. They worked through some extremely hot & humid weather and got the job done. It was a great experience and would certainly hire them again for any other projects.
Description of Work: We had a porch on the front of our house that was pulling away from the house. Several years prior we had another company look at it and told us they could jack it up and make it level which would correct the problems. Because it was pulling away from the house, nothing was square so windows and door would not close properly, leaving big gaps allowing insects and weather into the porch. Each year it only got worse so we finally decided we had to do something more drastic like replace or eliminate the porch. We called three companies from Angies List; one never gave us the quote they promised, one was extremely expensive and didn't appear to know what we really wanted so we didn't feel comfortable with them. Jan gave us a fair quote and appeared to have the knowledge necessary to accomplish what we wanted. And he did just that. We had the old porch completely removed and rebuilt. We changed the design of the roof and instead of windows with screens and a totally finished, all-weather porch, we had it turned into a screened in 3 season porch. Jan was able to design it in a way that blended into our existing landing including extending the roof to cover the entire front of the house. They constructed the porch with treated lumber so we could stain it rather then paint. We also have 2 big dogs and were concerned about them breaking through the screened windows. Jan was able to design it in a way that reduces the probability of that happening, even reinforcing the screened porch door so strangers wouldn't have to worry about the dogs breaking through the door. Jan's workers were extremely friendly and helpful, discussing options as we went through the process. They cleaned up after themselves and did NOT leave any mess. They exceeded our expectations and we would definitely recommend them.

+ 1 moreIt was an excellent experience from start to finish. We cannot say enough how well the jobs were done. I don't know if they could have done a better job. Jan and his crew were so respectful of our house and property. The roof was done in 2 days and that included the removal of the old roof. They took such care with every detail of the project .The siding job is so well done, no seams can be seen when looking directly at the house. It looks like a different house now. At the end of each day, they cleaned up and had their equipment neatly placed on the side, out of our way. When we needed to talk to Jan about the project, for any reason, he called us back that same day and usually within an hour. The cost of the project came in $250 above the estimate because we had rodent damage that they had to repair-which we feel was a very fair price. The siding project took a reasonable amount of time to complete-work started May 11th and completed June 11th. We do have more projects to do, and they will be the only call we make.

He brought a wide variety of samples into our home to give us a good idea of what we were buying. He suggested that we look at review on angieslist ourselves and was willing to provided other references. In the beginning there were several delays due to weather, but Jan kept us informed on how long that would delay our start date. His crew showed up at between 7:30- 8am the days they were scheduled to work and would work till about 4 everyday If for some reason they were not going to show up, we did receive a call from Jan almost every time. Being a 130 year old house there is nothing that is straight , even, or level on the house. With the work than Jan's crew did every line matches up and appears straight and level. The crew cleaned up everyday and did not leave messes lying around. His crew was very friendly to have around. The facia that was provided kept the existing crown molding look to the peaks of our home, even though it was done in aluminum. Not only would I use BORGWARDT CONSTRUCTION again, we recommended him to my in-laws for their upcoming kitchen remodel. Thanks Jan and crew for all the hard work they put in on this old house.

+ -1 moreWe called Jan to inquire about replacement windows after a frustrating experience with another contractor who was more interested in clearing his inventory of replacement windows than working with us to find the right replacement window for our old farm house. We were pleased to learn that he does replacement windows as we have used his services for help with restoring our 110 year old barn and were happy with his work. Jan reviewed options with us and helped us select a product that we felt would complement our old farmhouse. We were especially pleased with his taking the time to search for aluminum trim that was almost an exact match for our existing paint scheme. Also pleasing was a job proposal that was less than that given by the other contractor for his product. When the windows order was ready, Jan called to schedule delivery by the manufacturer as well as the date and time to begin work. As was agreed, Jan and his crew arrived early in the morning and, despite cold weather and snow, were able to install the windows in two days. They were able to minimize heat loss and did not bring much snow into the house. We have been enjoying a warmer house with far fewer drafts and are already seeing savings in our energy costs. Most of all we are also pleased with the appearance of the replacement windows in our 1885 farm house. We will be calling Borgwardt Construction again when we are ready for our final round of replacement windows.
