Carl Newton and his company has done nothing but cause us problems from the very beginning. We contracted him to build our dream home in North Dakota and it has been nothing but a nightmare. His "crew" is a bunch of inexperienced people and he was never around to supervise the work they were doing so the result is poor quality work. The house is nothing like we orginally wanted and what we discussed with him from the beginning and has ended up costing us way more money that what his estimate was. We had several meetings with Carl to be sure we were still within the budget and he consistently reassured us that we were right on track. During one of the final meetings, he got extremely defensive when we started asking him about money he had already been paid for work that had not been done. He got very aggressive and got right in my husbands face. He received the money to pay sub contractors and he never even contacted them to complete thier portion of the work. When asked about this, he continued to lie and say that he had it set up to be completed. He even gave us the day that they were supposedly scheduled to be there to do the work. That day came and went and when we contacted the subs ourselves, we were told that they had not even heard from Carl. We had several meetings with Carl at the bank involving our loan officer who is also the VP at the bank. He continued to lie throughout these meetings and even made the statement that "he was just saying what we wanted to hear so he could get more money." When we made the decision to longer retain his services, he refused to return the money that he had received for work that had not been completed. We have since had to pay somebody else to complete the work that he had already been paid for. We were suppose to have a ranch style home with a full basement with a walkout at one end and we were also suppose to have a walk out off our dining room on the main floor. They did not dig the basement deep enough to start so now we have practically a 2 story house and we had to spend extra money to build a deck off the dining room and a raised porch on the front because it is almost 6 feet off the ground. He also refused to pay the company that did the excavation the full amount he was owed and we were threatened with a lean because of this. We had a piece of siding fall off of our house within 4 weeks of it being put on. He was suppose to finish the exterior of the house by caulking around the windows and doors and completing the trim. They did not caulk all of the windows or doors. The little bit of caulking they did do was very poor. They smeared the caulk all over the siding. We also had water coming in under the patio door in our dining room one day when it rained because it was not caulked under the door at all. Thank Goodness that we did not yet have our hardwood floor in or that would have been ruined. In addition to that we had water leaking down through the bathroom fan vents in 2 of the bathrooms because of the poor job they did on the roof. The drywallers had a difficult time hanging the drywall because the walls were not straight, the framing was not square, and the floors were not level. On the wall that is shared by the house and garage, they actually cut the 2x4's and put shims in the cut to try to straighten or level the wall. BEWARE!!! I would warn all parties to think long an hard before hiring this company to do ANYTHING! I would also warn all sub-contractors to think twice before agreeing to do any work for them. For anybody that does decide to hire or work with this company, be sure you have a legitamate contract and be prepared for a court battle.
