Work was executed quickly and on time. Weather can be a problem this time of year and care was taken to minimize exposure for any potential damage through careful execution scheduling and some work in the rain. The guys were really flexible to work with and responded to my questions and comments without hesitation. Great care was also taken around our manicured gardens to protect plants and soil from damage and excessive tile grit/gravel. We also have a very small street with limited parking and they brought in a small trailer for trash which was an excellent solution to the tight quarters that we had on this project. I also had a meeting for work one day when a lot of hammering was going on and they worked their activities to allow me to work from home pausing the noisy activities for that period. Small respectful team, low impact and really easy to work with. I really liked their "get it done" attitude. not too much chit chat, just on with the work. .... I was also referred to Amigos Gutters who replaced garage gutters, (small job) very speedy scheduling and execution. nice clean work and drains well. thanks all Stu

I contacted Stout roofing on 10/20/2016 as we had water coming through the roof. The nice lady on the phone asked if I was a former customer (which was a yes) and took my phone number. She then told me that I would get a call back. Nothing happened. As I had such a good experience the last time we had them coming out I thought I would give them another chance and called again on 10/27/2016. I explained that I have been waiting for a call back. She apologized and told me that she would tell the team that this is my second call and they would get back to me. It's been another week with no response. I understand that the roofing companies are currently busy due to the weather. But at least let your customers know. Other companies I contacted were at least honest that they could not take a new job or would contact me once they have an opening. Getting empty promises is really frustrating.

They did a great job. Our roof looks beautiful and the skylight fit perfectly. They did a very good job of cleaning of after themselves. Two years later when we noticed we needed a rain water diverter, they came out at no charge to install it. This is the second time we hired Stout Roofing. Two years earlier, they replaced the roof on our rental house. They did a fine job on that roof as well.

Stout Roofing is exceptionally honest. When I bought my house a little over 2 years ago, a professional roof cleaning company, recommended by our inspector cleaned the roof. I asked about the condition, and they told me I had 2 or 3 years left on the roof. Since it has been over 2 years, I called Stout to get a price this week. Jake came out, took pictures for me and told me I have at least 25 year shingles and that my roof is in great condition. He showed me the pictures and said I have at least 10 years left on the roof. Stout Roofing was also very professional about making the appointment and showing up on time. When I do need a new roof, I will definitely call them again.

Jake was super quick to return my call and come out to look at the roof. We needed some minor repairs (about $2000) worth. He looked at the roof and said he would send me an estimate. He knew I was on a tight timeline due to selling our house. I never heard back. Never got an estimate. I called him 3 times and emailed him once. Total lack of response. No professionalism. Definitely not dependable.

I requested and received four bids for this job. Three of them, including the one from Stout Roofing, were within a few hundred dollars of each other. The fourth was almost $3000 higher and the company that provided it seemed rather shady, so I ruled them out. Of the three remaining contenders, I chose Stout Roofing primarily because I liked and trusted the owner, Jake Stout: He seemed knowledgeable and made confident, matter-of-fact recommendations, with absolutely no sales pressure. I also liked the fact that his company was the smallest of the three that I seriously considered -- only four crews, versus seven and eight crews for the others -- and that they could start the work within a few weeks, versus three months for the runner-up company. His bid happened to be the lowest of the three, but this was a minor consideration because all of the bids were all so close. The tear-off, replacement of underlayment and shingles, skylight installation, and clean-up all went well. The dumpster and materials were delivered the day before the project was scheduled to begin, as promised, and the crew showed up at 8:20 AM the next day, also as promised. Most of the work was completed in a single day. A few small areas of siding were damaged during the tear-off and installation of new flashing, probably in part due to some preexisting weather damage. Mr. Stout arranged for an experienced carpenter he employed to repair the damaged siding for the cost of the materials only, which was quite generous; and the repair work looked very good (fortunately I had matching paint). The new roof, with its ridge vent and clean lines, looked beautiful. The clean-up was reasonably thorough, although I had to point out some remaining debris in the gutters to the crew. The plants and shrubs around my home were not damaged. Two small areas of metal flashing installed on the eaves were obviously the wrong color, but Mr. Stout promised that these would be replaced with the correct color, and they eventually were. The only problems involved some difficulties communicating with Mr. Stout and his employees, which is why I gave them only a "C" for responsiveness. Mr. Stout seemed to take a very hands-on approach to running his company: For example, he personally bid the job, unlike any of his competitors, all of whom used sales representatives. I admired his personal involvement -- this was one reason I chose his company -- but sometimes he seemed to be spread rather thin and unable to devote enough attention to details and timely communication. Things improved a bit when I started sending him text messages rather than leaving phone or email messages for him, but some delays in communication still occurred and occasionally caused a little anxiety for me. A more significant problem involved communication with Mr. Stout's roofing crew. The three Hispanic roofers who performed the work seemed competent and professional, but they were not fluent in English. The foreman, Juan, spoke very limited English. When I asked Juan a question, he would usually give me only an ambiguous, one- or two-word reply, or sometimes just a hand gesture, such as a thumbs-up. Often I did not feel confident that he really understood what I was asking him. Mr. Stout himself admitted that it was not always easy to communicate with Juan, saying that sometimes he had to enlist the help of another Hispanic crew member whose English skills were better. If I were going to hire Stout Roofing again -- which I would certainly be willing to do -- I would insist that the foreman assigned to the job be fluent in English and that this requirement be written into the contract: I want to be able to ask questions and get clear answers from the person in charge of the work being done on my home. Unfortunately, that would rule out Juan, even though he seemed to be technically quite competent. In all other respects, my experience with Stout Roofing was very good, and I was glad to have chosen them.

Our new roof looks beautiful. The roof work crew removed existing roof and did a great job of cleaning up afterwards. A neighbor had a reroof at the same time by a different contractor and complained about all the old shingle pieces that littered her property -- Stout left us NO mess. We're pleased with our gutters as well, which were installed by a subcontractor. They look good. Punctuality: only minor dings on this point, which really has to do with communication. The large waste bin was delivered one morning, and we were not expecting it, as we hadn't been informed when it would be placed on our property. Luckily we were home and able to move the car that we park in the area needed for the bin. Also we thought the work was completed after the roofing crew left, but when my husband went up on the roof the next day we found a section that hadn't been finished and when we contacted the contractor, found that the crew needed additional material and would be coming back to finish it up. So, as I said, very minor complaints. We had a slight problem with the roof months later and called Stout and he came out that day and fixed the problem immediately. No problems since.

There was a five-year warranty on the roof which applied to defects in workmanship only. It has only been six years and I have had numerous issues with leaks around the flashing. - Started calling Jake June 2011 regarding a leak/ water damage on the wall of family room fireplace. He agreed that the flashing was not done properly but did not set up a date to fix it or return my calls - He came over 9/15 and I showed him the pictures that a home inspector took of the flawed flashing work. Jake admitted to the mistakes and said that he would fix it the week of 9/19 - I called them on 9/21 and 9/22 after not showing but they did not return my calls. I called them early on 9/23 and begged them to come back to fix the shoddy work. A day earlier, I had a skylight person come out to re-flash the roof using metal because I was waiting on Stout and did not want further damage - They finally came back out to look at the interior ceiling and walls because it had been going on for so long/ was never done correctly in the first place. The first person they sent out did not fix the problem so by the time someone put in new wallboard and paint it was a year later. The roofing material he used had a limited warranty of 12 years so that was not the issue-- the problem was that they did not do the flashing correctly in the first place. Last week week there was rain coming through the bathroom skylight so I called him in hopes that he would come fix it. Instead, he responded with a verbally abusive message. I then called another roofing company who specializes in roof repairs. They not only fixed the flashing around the skylight but also found 14 other areas that needed to be re-flashed as well. The damage has been done to me but I wouldn't want anyone else to go through this either Update 10/26/15: He recognized there were issues with his workmanship and resolved it amicably. I appreciate his willingness to resolve the issues.

Get a bid from these guys - they saved us thousands, and did a great job! Our roof is very large, and has several very steep sections. We knew the brand of roofing tiles we wanted (Certainteed), and got bids from three of Angie's List's "A" roofers, including one that came highly recommended by a friend. Stout's bid was more than $5,000 lower than the other two...for the exact same tiles and installation!! Stout Roofing did a great job, and we feel like we got a really good deal. Jake Stout was very responsive via email, and got me a bid quite promptly. We wanted to see some of the actual roof tiles to decide on a color, and he had one of his men drop off a sample board. The crew showed up on the agreed upon start date, and cleaned up each night. We also got to see how they dealt with something going wrong; some tile bundles slid down one of the steep roof sections, and tore off a section of the gutter. Jake said they would have a gutter company fix it (at their cost), and suggested that we withhold $1,000 from our final payment until it was fixed. As it turned out, however, Stout's crew took a few days longer than planned to finish the roof, and the gutter people got the gutter finished the same day the roof job was done. All in all, we felt like we got a quality roof installation at a VERY good price!

At first it went quite well. As others have commented, Jake did not put on a big sales pitch nor try to convince me to do anything that wasn't necessary. He seemed to be pragmatic about the work and focused on getting the job right. It was this approach that got us to select him to do our job. They wanted to get started right away in order to fit into their timing, and everything went very quickly at first. The roofing team was very professional and appeared to do good work. Their clean-up was OK. They cleaned up most of the debris, although we are still finding nails and asphalt in our yard two months later. The debris appears to be dropping out of our trees. They were pretty rough with our camellia bush, which will take a couple years to recover, and they scuffed up our new deck. Jake replaced one of the worst dinged railings, which helped. Considering all they were doing with our roof, they did pretty well overall with the mess. Our trouble with Stout Roofing was communication. I had to stop the roofing team at one point to tell them about how the job was to be staged in order to fix rotten shingles we had, and I only knew this because Jake had told me the plan. I tried to call Jake to confirm with him but I wasn't able to reach him. His crew was able to reach him and get confirmation on what I was telling them. After the roof was done, his carpenter fixed up all the wood trim and cedar shingles on an hourly rate basis and that is when the poor communication started to really show. It became very difficult to get a hold of Jake to discuss little details and choices. It became a problem when the carpenter did some shoddy work and when we wanted to discuss whether we'd like more shingles replaced than what the carpenter did at first. It was very hard to get a hold of Jake. When I talked to him, he admitted that the work was improperly done, promised to take care of it, and said he would talk to the carpenter about replacing more shingles. However, Jake never got back to me about fixing the shoddy work or the shingles and did not return the subsequent phone calls and emails. To this day, the job is not complete.

They tore off our old cedar shake roof and replaced it with Landmark TL shingles. It was a little tricky at first to get hold of Jake when we were in the process of getting bids, but he and his team were very communicative once the ball was rolling. We needed the roofers to coordinate with another company doing some insulation work, and the roofers were very helpful in working with the other company to get everything done.
