The workmanship was excellent. The installation crews clearly identified options as decisions were required and followed up on any questions we had during the job. They were consistently on time and pleasant to be around (we occupied the house during the entire project). There was no unnecesary mess and they took care to clean up. They managed subcontractors seamlessly, and the subs performed to the same standards.
We would recommend Keystone Kitchens without reservation.
We found Keystone management to have serious communication problems. Although other Angie's List reviewers have described having on-site project managers, we did not have one even though one was expected based on design phase discussions. The installers appeared to have little supervision, and their manager, Jim, didn't really seem to know what was going on. The engineer, Mike, did not make clear to the installers what was specified, and we never saw him after the work on the project started. When it was time to put in the dishwasher, it turned out there was not enough vertical clearance and Paul had to remove the underlay from beneath the floor below the dishwasher. In fact, our house is crooked and the kitchen floor slopes, so the designers should have made sure the space for the dishwasher was sufficient. The height of the dishwasher was the only vertical constraint in the kitchen design and it seem obvious to provide enough space.
Some cabinet doors were warped, and the Keystone folks took responsibility for replacing them as soon as we pointed this out. (We would have expected the installers to notice it first, but they didn't.) It did take quite a lot of time and three iterations to get the doors properly replaced.
Our original project did not have the floor or tile backsplash included in the contract. We should have ordered the floor earlier than we did, as there was a dead time in the project waiting for flooring material before the appliances could be installed. When we asked Keystone for a price for the floor, it was twice what flooring companies asked, so we had it done separately. We had Keystone do the tile as an add-on, even though their price was higher than tile companies, in order to coordinate the work with the installers. The tile work was satisfactory but not outstanding.
In summary, in a project of this magnitude it would be remarkable if there were no glitches, but Keystone did a fairly good job of correcting problems. The custom cabinets are beautiful.
"Thank you for the nice comments!"
The design process was fun and seemed so easy. Dennis was always available to answer our emails filled with detailed questions from people who never did a kitchen remodel before. He always answered every single one. We also had a copy of all designs that we shared with family members to get more feedback. At the end, we met with Chris to finalize the design. His experience and professionalism were mind-blowing. We knew we had the right guys.
The construction phase took about 2 months. It was a little bit longer than we estimated (5-6 weeks) but Keystone also oversaw HVAC upgrades in our dining room, lighting improvements in our living room and new floor installation. They even managed everything while we were on vacation first couple weeks. As any project of this size, there were many bumps on the road. Keystone was here to address every single concern we had. When we complained about the quality of the seam on our new white countertop, they took it seriously and even took the countertop off to make sure pieces were glued together correctly and the final product looked good.
I want to say that what we LOVE most about Keystone is that they go above and beyond customer expectations. Since buying our house, we had a chance to work with many contractors and I'll be honest, majority of them do their job and never look back. Keystone is all about making their customers happy. They never let us down. Whether we wanted our drawers perfectly aligned or needed extra shelves for our cabinets, they did it for us. They helped us with every single detail.
Other random thoughts? All their contractors are professionals with great attention to detail. Everybody in Keystone is really nice and considerate of your family needs during the remodel. They clean up after themselves every day. Billing is clear. Cabinets are custom made - maximizing the space and ideal for small kitchens. Any issues are addressed promptly.
The quality of our new kitchen is superior and the look is fantastic. We couldn't be happier. We will definitely recommend Keystone to all our friends and co-workers.
Dennis was great at coming right out to the house and was extra sensitive to my previous situation and understood my hesitation to move forward with any company. He even spoke to the owner who was aware of the "other company" and he was very great about working with my finances. Dennis mapped out a great plan and then Chris Ball came out to do the final measurements with Dennis before the project began. I then worked with my project manager Jim and the onsite project manager, Jody, every step of the way. Jody is amazing! He was so thoughtful about every aspect of the process. I truly trust Keystone Kitchens and will definitely use them once I am ready for a bathroom remodel.
Get on the phone and call them today because you really won't find a better company to work with!
When the Keystone employee (Kelii) arrived on the job the kitchen was gutted. After a couple of days for set up the construction progressed non-stop with only a couple of coordination delays . Kelii always addressed concerns and questions in a professional and knowledgeable manner. All of Keystone's employees that worked on our kitchen were professional and polite.
The cabinets that Keystone installed are as beautiful as any I have seen, and the quality of the cabinet hardware seems superior to what we saw before hiring Keystone - very sturdy and solid.
The installation was no hurry up job. Kelii took the time needed to install the cabinets correctly. The doors, drawers, and shelves close, fit, and pull perfectly. I've put a level on the cabinets and counter tops and the bubble splits the lines.
I spent 4 years working at the old Millwork Supply Company in Seattle with top notch cabinet makers and carpenters, and I feel confident stating the quality of the cabinets, the design, the installation, and the follow up quality control that Keystone supplied were excellent.
I contacted with Keystone based on their excellent reputation on Angie's List as well as their responsiveness during the quote process. They were great through the design process and showed flexibility in cabinet design and kitchen layout. Keystone's granite counter supplier employs software that lets one move and rotate the slab cut before anything is actually sliced allowing GREAT flexibility to match the slabs with the setting and align the stone's grain as desired.
I elected to perform demolition of the old kitchen myself and Keystone and I walked through the unit to mark off exactly what was to be removed, what would remain and how I could keep the place clean during that process. After I completed knocking the designated walls down, Keystone started work on June 9th with a completion date expected in the first week of July. Keystone gave me an absolutely latest completion range of 11-18 July. I arranged for a thorough cleaning of the unit on July 19th followed by my move in over the next two days. Unfortunately, Keystone was unable to meet its schedule and the kitchen was completed on July 29th.
Overall, I found that while the final completed work was of high quality, I had to exercise constant vigilance to make sure that it was done correctly and as I had requested. Much of the work Keystone completed had to be re-visited and this caused a great deal of delay:
- I had specified the position of three pendant lights. The electrical subcontractor installed them in the wrong location and their installation was never checked by Keystone. After I mentioned the incorrect installation, Keystone was able to correct the situation.
- Similarly, the position of three electrical outlets, the disposal switch and the type of two of the light switches was incorrect even given the explicit directions I had left. Keystone did not inspect their subcontractor's work and it was left to me to find these errors. Keystone did make sure all these mistakes were corrected after I noted them.
- Preparation for the installation of the over-the-stove microwave / vent unit was incomplete - bare wires were left instead of a standard 110 outlet to receive the unit's plug - with the result that the unit installer was unable to place the unit until he called Keystone. The micro-vent had been in the unit from the first day of Keystone's work, so there could be no confusion as to what it required for installation.
- After installation of the granite, I noted that there was no caulking to seal the granite to the counters. Keystone was able to fix this fairly quickly.
- The unit counters required about 1-1/2 slabs of granite but since I had to purchase 2 full slabs, I requested that sections of the remaining material be delivered to my unit for future use. I discussed this with the granite installer, the granite cutter and I showed Keystone where I had set aside a place for the granite to reside. After the counters had been installed, I noticed that this extra material was nowhere to be found. Eventually, these sections were located and placed where I had requested.
- While I had specified that the wood grain on the cabinet fronts should be vertical, all were fabricated by Keystone with horizontal grain and had to be re-made. Similarly most of the shelf doors were warped on delivery and also had to be remanufactured by Keystone.
- After the work was largely completed, I was shocked to receive a line-item bill for $665 for demolition. When I contested this, it was explained that this additional work had been necessary but not communicated to me. When I noted that I had NOT authorized this work and in fact could have completed the effort myself, this item was removed from the bill.
- Several punch lists (the list of items still outstanding when the work is mostly done) were generated but there was no effort to consolidate them. I had spent a few hours to create one with about 30 line items. Two Keystone reps had also been on-site and each made his own hand-written list. When the Keystone craftsman was onsite to make the final changes, none of the lists could be found. I happened to have a copy of my own list and one other had to be called in. The third list Keystone compiled was forgotten at that point.
- No written care instructions were provided initially, so I could not tell what chemicals could be used on the counters and cabinets. I requested the instructions 4 times from 4 different people at Keystone before I received them.
To be fair, each and every person at Keystone I spoke to was personable and responsive to my concerns and no additional cost to me was incurred by any of the above. My "C" rating for Keystone is based on both the lateness of their completed work and their lack of coordination which required my constant vigilance and attention.
"I would like to thank the client for taking the time to leave a review. In any business there is always room for improvement and we strive to achieve 100% customer satisfaction every day. However, I think the grades the client provided are inconsistent both with his own written review and with the actual quality and completeness of the beautiful kitchen that we built for him. The client had some unorthodox design ideas which we were willing to try to accommodate but in some cases were not viable and had to be revisited. The client also failed to complete the demolition of the kitchen prior to our arrival per his contract. We went ahead and completed the work for him but he refused to pay for the extra labor. I truly believe that this client had no experience with remodeling before. It is unrealistic to expect not have some small hurdles along the way on any remodeling project. What sets us apart is our dedication to making the finished result beautiful and complete. There is always some inconvenience to having your home torn up and having workmen in your space and we try very hard to minimize the impact, but we never lose sight of the goal of creating a quality finished product that you can enjoy for years to come. If you are looking for someone you can trust to provide you with a lasting value for your home we are going to be the right kitchen remodeler for you, I guarantee it :)"
From day one our project manager was present on the job every single week day. He not only did a wonderful job installing the beautiful new kitchen and baths, but also made sure the other vendors involved were there when they should of been in a timely and effecient manor. Our friends and new neighbors were amazed that there were no lags when nothing was happening
"Thank you for your feedback. I am very concerned when a client is less than 100% percent satisfied and I will take a close look at what we could have done to have achieved a perfect rating so that we can better serve all of our valued customers. I will also revisit this project to see if there is anything currently needing attention. Our clients are our most important resource and we very much want to be the best in the industry for quality, value and service!"
"This person is not a client of Keystone Kitchens. We have neither done any work for them nor given them an estimate. I am forwarding to Angieslist customer service so they can determine why they have a glitch in their computer system."
From our first meeting with Susan it was apparent that she was a knowledgeable designer. Her counselling and suggestions were practical and appealing, and in a very short period of time we were able to finalize a design. The finishing design details were suggested to us by Chris, after he completed his detailed measurements. Susan further assisted us in sourcing hardware that we chose to purchase separately. Even though it was not Keystone's responsibility, their project manager, Jim, came to our assistance with very sound advice and an offer of advocacy when we raised questions about another contractor that we had hired.
Without diminishing our appreciation for those that we have already mentioned, we have to say that star of this project was Keystone's cabinet maker, John. We have never been so comfortable with a contractor in our home as we were during the time that John was renovating our kitchen. We have never seen anyone produce such high quality work, so quickly, and with so much concern for the household where he was working. We are sure that Keystone Kitchens is already aware that John is a talented craftsman and a great corporate ambassador, but we feel that this cannot be overstated. We enjoyed having him in our home, and will always be grateful for how he addressed all of our questions, the excellent advise that he offered and the beautiful, well-crafted kitchen that he built for us.
It was our experience that everyone at Keystone Kitchens is totally committed to care and quality. This became evident during our initial meetings and continued to become even more apparent during the construction and final inspections that completed our project. In the future we would never consider using anyone else.
From the first meeting with the designer to the last meeting to go over the project we were beyond pleased. The work was outstanding! They showed up when they said they would and they left when they said they would on a daily basis. They cleaned up every single day and were very aware not to leave anything on the floors or where our dogs could get hurt.
They helped us with every single aspect of the design, we could not be happier with the results.
Keystone did a great job with the remodel, on time and on budget and we are very happy with the result.
Especially our project manager/installer (Tom) was outstanding and a pleasure to have around. On time every day, responsive, very detail oriented, left the site completely cleaned up every day and he did excellent work installing the new kitchen and working around obstacles like walls that were not completely level.
Cabinets are very high quality and we feel that we got real great value and high quality craftsmanship. The stand behind their product, we had two doors that were not completely level, got those exchanged without any questions.
The process for the complete demolition and installation of the new kitchen went smooth, a bit over four weeks from start to finish which was significantly faster than the initial estimate of six to eight weeks... great thing when you are without a kitchen.
Would go with them again without hesitation.
Update... one thing that bugs me is that actually nobody ever followed up after the job was complete, would expect that as a courtesy.
"I'm not sure why the client added an update that we did not follow up after completion. I actually did do a thorough inspection with the client present at the end of the project and sent my installer back to take care of a few punch list items. I typically would not re-inspect unless specifically asked to do so."
