Emerald City Roof Cleaning & Surface Restoration

I have used Emerald City Roof at least 9 times since 2007, both for cleaning and repair. His most recent visit is a good example of his skill and integrity. We have an old cedar shake roof that was put in incorrectly, with low-quality tar paper, by, at least partially, the original owner who preferred doing things himself to save money.... So we have had a lot of repairs done over the last 8 years and had two roofers (one who "certified" the roof for the house sale and never was able to fix any of the leaks, and another who was written up by Angie's list to be one of the worst contractor's ever, and a criminal!). Then I found Steve Emmert who cleans roofs, but seems to have a genius for fixing them as well. This last time he was out, he was nice enough to go up into the crawl space to track done a new leak. He shoved something up through the roof to mark the spot. When he started working on the area, he found it started leaking next to the large area he had repaired the winter before. His previous repairs have held great; it was the old tar paper in the adjacent area that had leaked again. So he tore out that section and redid it with new material and two weeks later, and a lot of snow and rain, that leak is fixed. For this, he charged just $200. (In comparison, another company fixed a hole caused by a branch harpooning the roof and charged me $750. See my report on EcoRoof for that review.) I cannot recommend Emerald City Roof highly enough. A good roofer can be so hard to find, since leaks don't necessarily show up until after several days of rain, and very few homeowners are willing to climb up on the roof to inspect the work done on it (or, in my case, even know what to look for). Steve has always been able to fix the leaks and he does a great job cleaning roofs, too. Two more things about Steve. 1) He always comes out as promptly as he can. This latest repair, I called him that morning, hoping to get him out between the holidays, but he actually managed to get out that very afternoon and had it taken care of in a few hours. He calls ahead of time if he has to reschedule. 2) He's the only guy in the company, no subcontractors, which means the buck stops with him.

They cleaned the cedar roof. However, they were supposed to replace at least 2 cedar bundles and only replaced one. They were on time, but the price does not seem fair for the work they provided. They were not very professional. They used staples on the cedar and left the staples on the lawn.

This is a one man operation. Steve Emmert is the owner and may have moved the business to 18721 Woodinville, WA. The owner's estimate was higher than every other reputable roof cleaning company that had placed a bid. I chose him because he was a referral. He came to clean my cedar roof and cleaned the gutters. He stripped house paint & left dirt everywhere in the process. He estimated one bundle of shake but called to tell me he ran out with a couple of questionable shakes remaining. I asked to purchase another bundle but he stated he didn't have one with him and didn't want to have to come back. I told him to go ahead and finish up. He called me the next day asking for payment. I told him I'd like an invoice/receipt. He said he doesn't work that way. Large staples were left in the grass and found their way in my dog's mouth. Shingles are loose & the roof exposed. I suppose we'll see the next time it rains. But for the price, there's far better with improved customer service available.
