We are so impressed with the skills and professionalism of the Classic Nursery Team. They do the things that don't show but make all the difference in the long term. We received big customer treatment even though we had a small job. I think that design and installation for this project was especially challenging because our front yard is so small. Sam worked closely with us by making two design revisions and written proposals before work began. Ken and Guillermo did a flawless installation of the paving stone walks and replacement landing for the porch stairs. They built the new landing so precisely on grade that I was able to reinstall the stairs without using shims or making any adjustments. Wow! They carefully graded the ground beneath the flagstones to assure proper drainage and made sure the walkways and patio abutted evenly and beautifully. These men were on time, every time. After the job was complete Sam returned to ask if everything was Okay. We confessed that we were not quite happy with how the flagstone had been laid out. The job was completed per specifications and it was really a matter of taste. Sam said he wanted us to be happy and literally pulled up two-thirds of the flagstone and started over. It took him all afternoon. That is what I call integrity! Now we have the front yard of our dreams and new friends at Classic Nursery. Thank you Classic Nursery!
Description of Work: Classic Nursery installed two paving stone walkways which meander and converge to form the landing under existing porch stairs. A flagstone patio extends from the walkway and forms a garden "room". Beautiful!

I contacted classic nursery and received a prompt reply for Alan letting me know he would have Sam contact me, I emailed pictures to Sam so he could get a vision of our existing landscape. Sam contacted us right away to setup an appointment to visit our property to learn more about the site and the project details. The first plan Sam developed was a pond and I was not sure if this is what I wanted so Sam recommended a pond less waterfall, after much thought Sam came back out to the house and we decided to go with a pond less waterfall. Sam developed a thorough and detailed estimate. Communication was timely and responsive throughout the process. Prior to the planting we met with Don, the landscape nursery manager. Don helped me decide on the plant choices and made recommendations. Juan and Arturo the workers who did the work were very professional, hard working, and friendly. They were on site for about three weeks and we were excited each day to see what they had completed each day after work. We were very pleased with their craftsmanship that they put into their work. The only issues we had were a portion of our contract that was for the driveway curbing. The initial contractor Sam had quoted a price from was unable to meet this estimate. Sam contacted a new curbing contractor that we were very happy with. We agreed to take on the curbing portion of our contract ourselves as this was a win win situation for both of us. Sam recently came back to finish a few remaining 'punch list' items and gave tips on maintenance care of the water feature. We are extremely happy with our new landscape. The fact that the quality work came with great customer service and clear communication throughout made it a very positive experience. Sam, Juan, and Arturo did a wonderful job. We are very happy we selected Classic Nursery.
Description of Work: Classic Nursery did a re-landscaping project at our home, landscaping two very large existing flowerbeds, adding a large selection of plants to intensify color year round, and extending an existing flowerbed to enhance some screening of distant neighbors. They also reworked our roundabout in our driveway, added several plants, and reworked our dry bed stream area. In the back of our home, set out from our kitchen window they installed a pond-less water feature with two falls, a small pooling area with a flagstone bridge and walking path leading to a circular sitting area of Montana slate flagstone with a flagstone fire pit. They transplanted the existing plants in this area to a new location on our property and planted new water feature plants.

This was an outstanding experience from start to finish. 1) when I called expressing interest, they sent me a questionnaire on email asking me details of what exactly I wanted, what types of plants I liked and disliked, etc. ] 2) Alan Burke the owner, came out to our house, patiently went over the entire yard. He was respectful of my wishes, and that I would have a budget. He gave me a range of options that would fit different budgets, from $3000 to $7000. I wanted to have a complete more mature yard, so I opted for the higher budget. Alan was incredibly responsive by phone, by email. He sent me sketches of his ideas, modified things per my requests, etc. He was really wonderful to work with. I had asked two other companies to submit bids. Both took to insulting the existing landscape so they could "dramatically" change things. They also kept emphasizing that this was going to be quite expensive. One had a bid come in $3000 higher for less work and one hasn't even gotten back to me. These were also fairly highly rated on Angie's list. 3) We were able to expeditiously schedule the start of our project. A few days before the start, we went up to the nursery in Woodinville where Don, the manager of the nursery, had pulled all the plants ahead of time so I could see what was going in my landscape. He also showed me varieties of said plants that I may like better. He patiently went over many options so I was very happy with what was going in my yard. 4) The entire project was complete in 4 days. Alan's workers were respectful, knowledgeable and helpful. They quickly made little adjustments if I didn't like something and just did amazing work. They also fixed our temperamental irrigation system that many others had not been able to. The end result is nothing short of gorgeous in a very short period of time. My yard is exactly what I have always wanted. I would give an A+ if I could.
Description of Work: We had Classic Nursery and Landscape basically design a landscape for us, using plants, rocks, etc, not modify the existing hardscape. They also added landscape lighting and fixed our existing irrigation system. They also reseeded our back lawn that wasn't doing so well.

Thank you [Member Name Removed]! I hope all of your landscaping is doing well. Warm wishes to you and your family.....Alan Burke...
Classic came out to discuss the addition of a stone path at the side of our house. The area has quite a slope, and this is the only way I can get a lawn mower from the front yard to the back, so there couldn't be steep steps, or slippery rocks. Classic suggested some very gradual steps separated by areas of compressed gravel. They came out on schedule, did a great job putting in an interesting and functional path. We were extremely pleased with their work.

Staff spent considerable time with me to determine what trees I should use to replace the ones I had removed. They were very helpful and patient. In March 2012, Classic nursery came out, dug and prepared the hole for the dogwood tree, which was subsequently planted. Cleaned up nicely after the work. I look forward to the blossoms in the spring! In October 2012, I had dug the holes for the 8 evergreen thujas myself to see how the spacing would be and actually how many trees would be needed. Turned out less than we had anticipated, so I got a credit for the ones not needed. I also removed all the roots and rocks, so when they came out to plant these trees, they had minimal work to do. Everything went well, cleaned up nicely again and so far all trees are thriving! .

We had an aging pond and waterfall system. The pond consisted of two pools connected by a waterfall in the middle and was constructed of large boulders and cement. Over the years, the cement had broken down and was leaking water into the landscaped area requiring constant water refills to keep the pond filled. We had had two different water feature specialists look at it and was told that it could not be fixed and would need to be totally replaced (for a large sum of money of course). Classic Nursery looked at the pond and determined that they would be able to fix it. Fixing it involved breaking up the concrete basins in both pond pools along with ripping out a couple of the large boulders in the waterfall area. They lined the pools with a waterproof membrane and replaced the concrete with small, round, natural looking rocks (cobble). They re-set the waterfall rocks to create two smaller waterfalls and replaced our pump with a pump/filter system which helps greatly in the upkeep of the pond. They also added plant material around the ponds that tied everything together in a natural looking way. We are beyond happy with the results and the work performed by Class Nursery & Landscape and would not hesitate to use them in the future. They were prompt, conscientious, and hardworking. Also, our designer, Guy Feldman, did an amazing job with the design work!

They worked efficiently and fairly cleanly. The grass was installed well and the plants they supplied were top notch. The team even helped me transfer a heavy evergreen (that I got from another source) from my car. There were some issues with the initial zone layout that crossed sunny and shady areas because things were worked in place rather from a zone plan, but they came back this year under warranty and resolved them based on their knowledge of the system requirements and my knowledge of the micro-climates and existing zone coverage. We had some back-and-forth about what the plan needed to be so I would recommend working from a sketch or plan if you can - pictures always make things clearer. There was one other point of concern when for one zone they had to cut through an existing compacted, crushed rock storage area. When they did this they did not put down plastic to keep the rocks and dirt separate and we had to come back later, remove the area they dug through and repair the storage area. When they came back to triage the zones this year, they did work a lot cleaner and everything was back where it had been when they were done.
Description of Work: There were three parts of our project: 1) Remove grass and replace based on existing plan. 2) Provide plants based on a specified list. 3) Remove existing sprinkler system and replace with zones based on landscaping plan. We chose Classic Nursery & Landscaping because they could cover all three aspects of our project and could design the sprinkler system to suit the landscaping plan.

Again, I am very happy with Classic and highly recommend them to anyone who is looking. The team is professional, friendly, helpful and communicates well. There were some delays with our sod due to there being too much rain, but Guy kept me up-to-date with the situation and the schedule and was apologetic. No problem. When it finally was time, the sod was installed quickly and looked great. I received maintenance instructions shortly after and it still looks great. They cleaned up after themselves and managed to do this installation without damaging some newly emerging bulbs/flowers that were very close to the edge of the sod. Time will tell whether the sod will last, but it seems to be very healthy. They checked the irrigation system and fixed one broken head. Later I had them move a couple of heads that were in poorly placed areas, but that was charged separately. I also had them fix a leak in our backflow prevention assembly; also charged separately. They were also superb in scheduling and following through with these projects. I feel confident in hiring Classic, not only because they do such a good job and are so easy to work with but because I feel that if there are any problems (and things happen), they will take care of it without a fuss.
Description of Work: We used Classic to help us relandscape our backyard after purchasing a new house. This report is about "phase II" of the project which included new sod, checking the irrigation system, and adding a few plants and replacing a few that hadn't made it through the winter after "phase I". You can see my comments about "phase I" in an earlier report.

Classic visited our property to learn more about the site and the project details. They developed a thorough, detailed estimate which was several thousand dollars less than the competitive bid we got. They came back to meet with our landscape designer once we had selected them. Communication was timely and responsive throughout the process. The crew that did the work was very professional, hard-working and friendly. They were on site for about 3 weeks and we saw first-hand the craftsmanship they put into their work. We requested a few changes along the way and they were good listeners and implemented the changes very effectively. The only issues we had were relatively minor. One day the crew didn't show up because their truck broke down, but they were good about letting us know what had happened. Some of the trees weren't staked and blew over in a storm, but they came out and staked them as soon as I contacted them. A few new plants didn't survive the winter but they were covered under the warranty and were replaced for no additional cost. We recently had them come back to finish a few remaining 'punch list' items and they were very thorough and helpful. The most important thing is that the quality of work is very good--we are extremely happy with our new landscape. The fact that the quality work came with great customer service and clear communication throughout made it a very positive experience. We are very happy we selected Classic Nursery.
Description of Work: Classic Nursery did an extensive re-landscaping project in our front and back gardens, including hardscaping additions (a ledgestone dry stack rock wall, dry stream bed and flagstone patio). They removed sod and some existing trees and plants, prepared the beds and planted several dozen new plants according to our plan.

The bad: * The sod was to be removed as specified in the design, and the ground prepped for easy planting. I was expecting, soft, rototilled, amended soil. Instead what I found was a layer of compost on top of a bed of sod clumps that had been rototilled in. I needed to get the pick out to dig holes for the plants. We have a baby, so time to do house projects is precious right now, and this was more work than I intended on doing. Part of this redesign was to make the yard a little less maintenance intensive. Now, the grass is coming back up not only in the areas we plan on seeding in Spring, but also in the beds. We don't use pesticides, so there's a lot of weeding to do now. Owner said this shouldn't have been done (sod left), but didn't offer to remedy the situation. * When I noticed one of the gravel sidewalks was shaped incorrectly, it came to light (near the end of the project) that the owner had not made sure the foreman had the design plans. He'd verbally walked him through it and then never checked back. This was poor communication and indicates to me that the owner did not take our project seriously. With a phase 2 to cost 2-3x what phase 1 did, I'm a little surprised at this. I wound up reshaping the walk myself. * The owner sent 2 emails saying we owed him more money, and both times I cleared it with their accounting department that we had paid the total bid amount plus the addendum work. She thinks he was looking at a version of the bid that we didn't sign off on. He never sent an email to simply acknowledge this, much less apologize. The good: * A much more detailed bid was provided than any other contractor. * The crew was professional. * They came out as soon as they could (about a week later) to do some addendum contract work. * They cleaned-up the job site well. * The foreman on the job did a great job cutting the asphalt, making the curve perfect. This was an area we were worried about, since once the cut is made, it's a done deal. * The owner gave some good suggestions on moving some pieces of the two phases around, which made the yard look complete even though there's another phase (irrigation, fencing, pavers, etc.) * Everything looked very nice when they left including the dry stream bed. They reshaped it with a good attitude when I told them it was back too far and didn't leave enough room for the plants. I had originally said I wanted it back a bit from the road, and that obviously was too subjective. Even though most of the work was great, I gave a B grade on quality due to the sod and lack of going by our plans. Other than the grass issue, we're very happy with how the yard looks. Update 6/25/2012: Classic Landscaping is correct. They did do some complimentary items for me, and I appreciated that and the other areas pointed out. I've since worked with other contractors on non-landscaping work, and have come to appreciate that these projects don't always run as you envision them, and as such am learning to roll more with things. While I've left the details in, I've upgraded some of the earlier gradings I gave to better reflect how I now feel about the work.
Description of Work: We hired Classic Landscaping & Nursery for the demolition and heavier work of our front-yard landscaping. We already had a complete design from a landscape designer. I wanted to do the planting and barking in order to save money, but also because I enjoy it. Classic placed existing plants into containers for temporary storage. Remove street asphalt to broaden yard size, remove a brick garden wall, planters, cement sidewalks, and sod. Grade yard and rototill in compost. Add river bed. Create new, curving sidewalks and broaden driveway (both done with crushed rock.) This is phase 1. There's still another phase to go.

Thanks you for the comments. It is correct to note that the sod was tilled in in some locations. Please note that this is NOT our standard procedure and I was appalled to find this had been done and noted this to the client at the time. In all instances we remove sod, rototill, fertilize and lime prior to sod installation. Regarding the path alignment, this was a minor change and would have easily been handled. As such it was a tempest in a teapot could have simply been a comment in a phone call or email and would have just been taken care of - even after job completion. It is important to note also that this was a budget-based bid (we met the tight budget) from an outside designer supplying conceptual plans and that there were quite a few 'complimentary' labor items that were done at the owners request which are not mentioned here. We performed additional work at the owners request after the work was complete, did significant transplanting not in the estimate and did additional hauling, hand cut concrete and provided additional soils in excess of the estimate. We also suggested significant savings in select areas as part of doing a phased installation and all consultations were done by a licensed landscape architect at no charge for the client. With regard to the billing, this WAS our error, as the client's invoice was not cleared on our weekly aging report and it appeared (twice!) that she had not paid in a timely manner. (Our bookkeeper got an earful over this - Sorry!)... For a more representative sample of our referrals, please refer to a full range of comments regarding our company at classic nursery.com and on Facebook.

The experience with this company was excellent. I would happily hire them again and would recommend them to my friends and family without reservation. When problems arose, they were dealt with cheerfully and immediately. Guy was very patient and always happy to answer any questions or make changes. The landscaping team, let by Eric, was friendly and helpful and courteous and a joy to work with. They were careful to clean up after themselves each night and everything that they did was done well. If we had anything we wanted different they were quick to make those changes. Guy would come by often to check on their progress and our contentment at how things were looking. They were never pushy or grumpy. It was just one of the best customer service experiences I've had in a long time. The yard looks so much better and I look forward to using it. As I said before, we will have them come back in the spring to install the lawn. Thanks!
Description of Work: The yard of our new house turned mostly to mud when winter arrived. There was too much shade for the grass. Also, there were large swaths of land with nothing planted. We hired Classic to put in a flagstone patio with a firepit, plant and mulch the bed areas, and to solve the problem with the shading mud/grass. Guy listened to us and walked the yard with us. He came back with a plan and described what he thought was best. He also spray painted the yard with the location of the patio, flagstones, paths, and plants so I could see what he was describing. He met with us several times and we decided to go ahead with everything except a new lawn which we will wait to put in after spring arrives.

The process was incredible. The designer was responsive to our preferences and took us to visit the rock quarry to pick out what we wanted. We were also able to go to the nursery to review plant choices. The two installers were true craftsmen: extremely professional, detail oriented and showed a real attention to detail. Their work was absolutely excellent. Every day was like Christmas. We couldn't wait to see what had been done that day. The space is incredible. So much better that we imagined. This team was truly a pleasure to work with from start to finish.

Everyone at Classic Nursery was extremely helpful right from the beginning when I first made that call. They advise me that the Project Manager would call be back to set a date to come to the house to discuss the design and planning. Guy Feldman was the Project Manager. Guy was fabulous. The one main thing I liked about him is he "listened" to what I wanted. He made suggestions and didn't try to sell be something I didn't need or want. I find this offensive when company's do this. I wish all company's had a "Guy Feldman" to work with! The first visit was alot of information. He gave me time to digest what we discussed and then came back in a timely manner with the quote, time frame, etc. Guy was also there on the first day to review the plans with the gentlemen that did the work. Both gentlemen that did the wall were excellent also. They were very caring of my yard and plants and also cleaned up after themselves. Guy also did a follow-up after the job was done to make sure I was happy and if there was anything else they could do. I wish all home projects went this smooth! I only wish Classic Nursery did electric, plumbing etc...they have great people, which makes them a good company. I rate them high on my list! Lastly...Guy Feldman is the best!
Description of Work: I requested a 3 foot retaining wall for my back yard to define my backyard space from the protected wetland area which included a small set of stairs to the wetland. The project manager Guy Feldman suggested a certain style of brick and flagstone topper after seeing my garden. The retaining wall was simple, however, still labor intensive due to the smaller space and then cementing the flagstone on top of the bricks. In addition, they did a beautiful job with 2 foot wide stairway topping that with flagstone also. The wall is exactly what I wanted including the stairs. It is very sturdy and it also helps me with easy planting.

The guys who did the rock wall were amazing. They had to make it hang together so it doesn't wobble. I was pleased that they were able to use plants that I already have and incorporate them in the landscaping. The work was expensive, but it was worth it. They said the work would take three days, but it ended up taking five. They were there when they said they would be there, but it took longer than they thought it would. I am setting up another project with them in two weeks.
Description of Work: They pushed back a bank that runs across the entire backyard and built a capped rock wall, which is actually like a retaining wall. The wall is 120 feet long. They also built a drainage system, including a French drain and a sump. It also connected to the house drainage system to take care of a water problem in the back yard. They also planted trees and replanted some plants they had to move. They used some plants in pots that I already had for the landscaping.

I was pleased with them. It took a while to reach to an agreement in terms of meeting of the minds but overall, I would rate them high. My husband is extremely picky and he had some complaints about the clean up but the owner was extremely attentive to our concerns. He listened to us and talked things out. Basically, I was pleased with what I have got. I paid around $7000 or $8000. I was slowly moving towards getting the house ready to sell and they came in. They did a lot of cleaning up and re-did some things that needed to be done. They gave me their expertise in what would look good and all that. I received many compliments on the work that they did. I would probably use them in the future.
Description of Work: I have used the services of Classic Nursery and Landscape Company in October 2010 for landscaping.

Alan came to my home to review my yard and to discuss my interests. He focused on price early on to ensure he would quote something that met my financial expectations. He did not do any sort of design or drawing but did give details in the proposal about how many yds etc and types of materials the quote covered. I expressed my concern that I was having trouble visualizing the project he would create and felt I needed a design to make my decision. He told me a design would cost $1200 and I said that would be okay if he took that off the fee if I hired him for the entire project. He declined stating that he would never do a design but just "draw" on my lawn to show the workers what to do. I felt comfortable enough with him and his company to hire him but without any sort of a visual I had no idea if the project implemented would meet my vision. I hired another vendor who did design sketches (at no cost) before a contract was prepared. This is precisely what I needed to feel comfortable. I am spending a lot more money than Alan and I discussed but I know I am getting what I want for my home.
Description of Work: A quote/proposal was prepared for landscape on my entire home; front and back; hardscape and planting.

Response from Classic Nursery & Landscape Co.
Member, Thanks for your continued consideration and your kind words regarding our on site meeting. Regarding the plan, I guess I misunderstood our discussion. I had noted that you didnt necessarily need to invest in a plan and that I thought that we could proceed more accurately by spraying the layout of the elements in survey paint on the ground. This helps to actually "see" it. With your general approval of the complimentary attendant estimate, this could then be followed up with a plan and, at that time of year, credited back to you at the end of the job. That noted, our plans tend to be more accurate cad/pdf plans that are coupled with estimates. In addition, I was surprised to see the front wall and steps removed and replaced, as we discussed this needing a permit to build higher than the 4ft limit. You noted that you were not interested in pursuing the effort at that time, otherwise I would have included that in my proposal. (I assume that in the end, it may not have been permitted, as the steps don't have the required handrail that code requires.) In the end though, your project looks pretty good. I especially like the lighting. It's disconcerting to have not done it, as I drive by it every day and want to tweak the planting! Best of luck to you as you continue remodeling and please don't hesitate to call if we can be of any additional assistance...

Guy came to our home for the initial complementary consultation. He listened to my desires, and provided great suggestions for the design of the project. The detailed estimate allowed us to envision and understand the full scope of the proposed project, and to make changes as needed before the project got underway. Guy was always available to answer questions and to quickly address concerns. Don met with us at the nursery to provide suggestions for plant selections, and gave us online resources. Finally, the labour was done by Juan and Carlos who were pleasant, professional, courteous, and hard working. At the end of the work day, they left everything tidy. We are very pleased with the end result, and we are happy to recommend Classic Nursery to others.
Description of Work: Placement of a french drain, rain garden, paver brick patio, and new garden beds with plants installed.
