I called Dan's Top Notch when my furnace, which is located in the attic, started leaking water through the ceiling. Kyle showed up and after he looked at the system told me he wasn't certain what the issue was. He called someone and sent pictures of our furnace then told me there was nothing he could do. The system wasn't installed properly and needed to be replaced then charged us $102 for that advice. When I asked how much it would cost to fix it he wasn't able to quote me a price but told me someone else would come out to give us a quote for a new system....By the way that's $102 for the advice. This was a service call and even if the system should be replaced either fix the system or tell me you'll have to come back to finish the job with additional parts. There was no other option because he told me he couldn't do anything else. We started talking about payment and it became pretty obvious that it was going nowhere fast and Kyle was nothing but the unqualified guy in the field and arguing with him was pointless. The funny thing is I had Dan's Top Notch out the preceding 3 years in a row to conduct annual maintenance/service and cleaning of the system which according to them includes checking that the system is running at peak efficiency. Nobody ever mentioned the system was installed improperly and nobody ever told us the system needed to be replaced even though they were looking at the furnace which was what ultimately failed. I will never use Dans again and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND AGAINST ANYONE EVER USING THEM!!! TERRIBLE SERVICE AND THEY HAVE ZERO INTEREST IN DOING RIGHT BY THEIR CUSTOMERS!!! BUYER BEWARE

Was able to get in on special, $69.95. Kyle called to let me know he was on his way. Arrived on time and did a thorough check of both heat pump and furnace. Replaced a capacitor in furnace, which was extra. Showed me what to do to clean heat pump when it gets warmer. Also told me about using emergency heat setting when it gets really cold so as not to strain heat pump. Professional and courteous service.

They were able to set an appointment within just a couple days. Mike arrived after a long journey from the Vancouver, WA area to our home in the Beaverton/Aloha, OR area which is quite a trek. Had the issue identified in minutes, fixed the leak, added new refrigerant, and tested everything out to make sure there were no more leaks. He was done in about an hour and a half or so. The AC blows cold like a champ now.
Description of Work: AC was not blowing cold. Needed the system problem diagnosed and fixed.

They were prompt with estimate and appointments, very polite, informative and clean. David Simms and Son were the electricians and did a beautiful job as well. Kyle gave a detailed explanation of the new WiFi register and use without WiFi. They were done in about 6 hours. They were unaware of their listing on Angie's List as we could not contact them through the site, but called their business and went in to request a visit to give us an estimate, so called them at the business for a quote.
Description of Work: Installed air conditioner for a 2900 sq ft home that was A/C ready. They were going to book us 4 weeks out but had a cancellation and it was installed in 1 day, within 2 weeks of contract.

"Our furnace was 19 years old. It still functioned fine but I knew it was only a matter of time. I contacted Dan's Top Notch for a quote. Jake was extremely professional and kind and did not try to upsell me. The two guys who did our installation were friendly and polite as well. They took time to answer my questions and were very considerate of their noise level because we had a napping baby. New furnace seems to be working great!"

The unit had the wrong size motor. Our service guy, Mike, did an outstanding job of diagnosing the problem and his knowledge of Carrier products helped him figure out the issues (previous owner installed the wrong motor and it wasn't matching what Carrier said should be installed). He's going to come back and finish the repairs, but we couldn't be happier. I called yesterday and they showed up today, exactly on time. Excellent service, very professional and we know we're in good hands. The service call is all we've paid for so far....

They were excellent. Dan's was up front about costs and let me know what the fee would be to evaluate and diagnose the problem. I met Ray, I hope remember his name correctly, at my house around noon. He opened up the AC unit and diagnosed the problem very quickly. It was a bad capacitor. Ray was great, very direct and straightforward. The AC was up and running in no time, making my family very happy!

As I stated above, everything was handled, from start to finish in a most professional, courteous & timely manner. No complaints, just compliments to the great folks at Dan's.
Description of Work: Dan's performed both an A/C & heating system tune-up on our units & identified more than a few problems. They later came out & changed out our A/C unit's cracked drain pan. The leaking problem was solved, for far less money than if I'd believed the man that came out from Advanced Air Systems last fall & told me that the problem was that the entire furnace needed to disconnected from all its ducting, removed from its place & the garage & then re-leveled...which, of course, wasn't the problem. Dan's was absolutely professional & timely in every way, shape & form. I will not be using any other company for my home's needs if Dan's is able to provide them. Give them a try - you won't be sorry. They're the very best there is out there!

Hello Member, Thank you for your business. With this low score it would seem we should have done better as far as the heating system in your house. I am not sure what the problem is but your business and good reports are very important to me. On the third system, they added a condensate pump which started to fail about 6 months after it went in. It only occasionally made noise, and I waited to contact the company until I had definitive symptoms. When I called, I was told the warranty had expired less than a month prior. They tried to charged me for a "do nothing" service call for $85. They then said it would be over $300 to diagnose and fix the the problem. I had 2 other systems installed by Dan's, and didn't mind paying more because their sales staff seemed very professional. It is still broken waiting for me to find a company that I can trust. They were fine as long as everything worked well, but when it comes to follow up service, they were very disappointing. I would never recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: This company installed a split system upstairs in our older home. The one mentioned here is one of a total of 3 systems I purchased from them on remodeling project. The last one had a condensate pump, while the first two are working OK.

This particular system utilized a mini-pump that is used for the Ductless Heat Pump systems. These mini pumps have a very small water reservoir and components. We provide a 1-year labor warranty and extend the manufacturer parts warranty to what is offered by the manufacturer. Unfortunately this pump failed after the labor warranty and Manufacturer warranty had expired. We intend to provide the highest quality parts and supplies to the homeowner. We stand behind our warranties and products as specified in the contracts. In this particular case it was not something we could get covered under warranty and would cost the owner to repair.

See the story above.
Description of Work: I called Dan's, based on a favorable report in Angie's List, to repair an older heat pump in a rental house I own. The man who came out advised me almost immediately that I needed a new one. There were two reasons, he said, why the existing one couldn't be repaired. The first had something to do with the fact that it required an older version of the cooling gas--I don't recall the details. The second was that a critical electronics board had to be replaced, and the board which was required was no longer available. He also told me that I would require extensive electrical modifications, because aluminum wiring had been used. He quoted me a price for a new heat pump. They I called in another contractor, also well reported on Angie's List. This second company's estimator said that adding new gas was not a problem, and that the electronics board which I needed, although expensive, was available. He also told me that if I opted to install a new heat pump, no extensive wiring would be required. Instead some kind of junction box would have to be installed inside the house, next to the blower motor, and connections from aluminum wiring to copper wiring would be made in that box. I elected to have this second company repair my existing heat pump, and it is now working properly. Dan's sent me a bill, although their man really didn't do anything except make an estimate for a new heat pump--Dan's web site says that all estimates are free. What bothers me more than the bill, however, was the wrong information which Dan's gave me, especially about the non-availability of the electronics board. There's no money involved here, because I didn't pay (and won't pay) Dan's bill--I sent them a letter of explanation instead. Based on my experience, I don't think Dan's deserves its high rating.

Response from Dan's Top Notch Heating & Cooling
Hello to all Angies list customers. I am the owner of Dan's Top Notch Heating and Cooling. It is our goal to have all happy customers and it is sometimes a challenge. The fact of the matter is there is no heat pump made that along with your money we cannot fix. Although as a safeguard of your money some heat pumps should simply not be fixed although that is always your choice. In the case of the member, having a 20+ year old system having a refrigerant leak along with having a bad control board, burnt refrigerant, and acid in the system. Not to mention the many other parts soon to fail that we do not know about. This unit would be a good candidate for replacement and should not be repaired in our opinion. Although, to a landlord this may not be what you want to hear. Refrigerant does not simply disappear, if it is gone it has leaked out. Washington State law will not allow us or any other (legitimate) heating/cooling company to simply keep adding refrigerant to a system and let it leak out damaging our environment without doing a leak search, and doing necessary repairs. My technician was called out to the member's house on a service call. (This is not a free call and he was not called out to do sales, remember it is a rental house and it was simply a service call.) We have a "min" diagnostic fee of $85.00 for any service call. Upon arrival the member signed our work order and approved the work. Our service technician did his diagnostics and reported his findings to the member. He told him what he found and that he should consider replacing this unit and not putting any money into this old system. I have a quote from our website that I copied and pasted here that the member wrote about. The free service the member spoke of in his letter and this can be found at www.danstopnotch.com. "Always FREE estimates for new equipment from our experienced Home Comfort Experts." This is standard industry practice. Diagnostics on repairs are not free. The service report we submitted stated that this unit was very low on refrigerant, it is an R-22 system that is Ozone depleting and has been regulated due to environmental impacts, “global warming” and is being phased out. There was a burnt smell in the refrigerant and it was contaminated with acid. My tech's report: Very low refrigerant, Acid & burn odor. Bad defrost control board recommend replace system. The defrost board that was bad, we were informed by our supplier that this board was discontinued and no longer available. I was told after this problem arrived that a replacement has been found and we will offer that in the future. Although at the time my service manager, my technician and myself were not aware of it. I was told by my technician that the member agreed. That this system being so old it should be replaced and not to put any money into it with all these problems. My technician at that time, also told the member that if he purchased a new unit from us we would deduct the charge of this call from the price of the new unit, and the member agreed. Although we were never paid so it is hard to deduct what you have never received. Now the member has called someone else who I assume has simply added new refrigerant in the old system with the burnt refrigerant and made it work. He tells me he paid over $700.00 dallors to get it fixed. In any event, after we quoted a new unit things changed. I guess the member decided to not replace this unit most likely due to cost, and this being a rental house. He paid someone else he said over $700.00 dollars to repair this unit and neglected to pay his bill with our company. I asked my office to call him and find out why this bill was not paid. Janeanne of my office called him and I am told he was very rude! Hanging up on her saying he would not pay the bill. After that I receive a letter from the member telling me he hired another contractor and that he would not pay his bill. It is unfortunate that this turned out the way it did. Although I am sure you can see what the problem is. Thank you Danny D Reude Owner, Dan's Top Notch Heating and Cooling.

We recently moved into a 1978 home, and noticed from the first night that we would not be able to sleep due to excessive popping/banging sounds coming from the ductwork located in the floors below our master bedroom and bath. The noise is most prominent when the furnace is heating up or ramping down, as the metal duct expands and contracts (pops). We had a new high-efficiency furnace installed but that did not eliminate the banging sound, it only reduced the severity by having a more even heat flow through the ducts. We finally agreed that we would need to call a specialist in ductwork, and finding one is no easy task. There are a million "HVAC" companies, however most that we found are limited to furnace/AC installation or duct cleaning. We stumbled across Dan's Top Notch, they've got sheet metal in their name so we figured they would be a good bet. They sent a team out to our house for an inspection and to do some work to address the situation. They pulled drywall off the garage ceiling to access the ductwork, and they found some areas where the ducts were not even connected, and loose fitting in other places, causing the metal to bang against itself. The ducts were not properly sealed or insulated either. The team sealed and insulated the entire main run above the garage, and at the end of that day of work we were fairly confident the problem had been corrected. However in the ensuing nights, my wife and I again could hear the unwanted noise; it was quieter this time but when you are trying to sleep, even the smallest noise is quite disturbing. We called Dan's back again, and had them come out to look at the duct lines leading from the main run to the bath and master bedroom. They pulled off more drywall and discovered even more sloppy ductwork installed by the home builders. The builders used the wrong type of ducting on the main run (heavier duct meant for vertical runs was used horizontally), and the sub runs had just metal sheets wrapped into a tube with a single screw every 2 feet to hold it together - none of it had been sealed or insulated. Heat had been escaping through these malformed runs and heating the interior floor instead of our living space, as well as allowing for the torturous expansion/contraction sounds. They replaced two sub runs with flex duct to eliminate any possible noise from these runs. Again they tightened more loose areas on the main run, and secured the vent piping near the furnace from possible vibration. The popping noise is now reduced greatly enough through the master bedroom and bath vents that my wife and I can sleep through the night. Dan's technicians were able to look into the duct soffit and see that the rest of the main run on the other half of the house has similar issues, and indeed we can hear the same noises in the office and family room. At some point we may need to repair or replace the entire ductwork system. But the work that these folks did has allowed us to rest a lot easier and we are very thankful for their expertise. Joe in particular was very professional and extremely patient in listening to us and with us to isolate the taunting noises. I will definitely be calling Dan's Top Notch in the future to remedy the remainder of our duct issues.
Description of Work: Remove drywall from garage ceiling, and inspect and repair faulty ductwork to reduce unwanted duct "popping" noise.

The technician Kyle arrived early for the job and was very personable. He did an excellent professional job, explaining how setting the thermostat in a certain way would actually make the A/C system work a little easier. He also showed me an air filter location I didn't even know about and removed the filter, which was completely clogged. He also disassembled the gas fireplace, cleaned the class, and re-seated the ceramic logs in the positions they should have been in originally. Overall, the service was money well spent and certainly worth the price. We would definitely recommend this company to anyone else seeking HVAC service.
