Description of Work: We contacted a couple of contractors for estimates for standing water in our backyard. We thought putting in a french drain would be the answer and JP Stone had the same plan. The price is very reasonable so once we can get the money together, we will have them come out and do the job. It was hard to get a call back initially and they were booked out several weeks for the estimate which is why I rated them lower for responsiveness.

 + 2 moreOutstanding. John and his foremen are total professionals. They are knowledgeable, hard working, prompt, reliable and really seem to enjoy what they do. The foreman takes personal ownership of the work, even years later. When the city of Portland recently ripped out our crosswalks and put in new handicapped ramps, they ripped up the irrigation system on our sidewalk strip. They did not mark the tubes properly and had no idea how to fix it. I called Mr. Stone and he was there within 30 minutes--and he met with the city crew, figured out how to salvage things and gave them his number in case there were problems. JP Stone provides the best customer service of any contractor I have every used, bar none. I highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: Complete renovation of front, back and side gardens in two separate projects, 2006 and 2011. This involved tearing out existing lawn, installing irrigation, hardscaping, and extensive landscaping, all coordinated with our garden designer. He also installed a new fence, and a french drain to keep water away from our house. Ongoing maintenance of our irrigation system since then.

 + 2 moreOne of the things that struck me most about the experience of working with John Stone was how frank he was about the uncertainty inherent in attempting to deal with yard/basement drainage issues. He spent a lot of time trying to help us understand what he believed was the problem, and why his (less expensive) option would probably be enough to address it. He was also very emphatic about the need to get multiple opinions on the work - he was NOT someone who did a hard-sell. His work to improve the landscaping, improve the drainage, and limit/reduce flooding in the basement appeared very successful so far. We're overjoyed with the quality of the work, the improvement of our landscaping, and the relief we feel at having improved drainage around the house.
Description of Work: We asked him to analyze the root cause of and come up with proposals to address some moisture problems in our basement, prior to renting our house out. He did a thorough walk-through of house and yard, and provided a couple of options (one less expensive which would probably address the problem, and one more expensive that definitely would). We ended up going with the less expensive option (french drain in two places, change in landscaping/grade of the yard and driveway). He also added fresh sod to improve the grass quality and landscape of both the front and back yards. After the work was complete, he came by to provide some follow-up analysis (due to a mistake we made), and he graciously helped us understand the issue without making us feel like idiots.
