I had Able bid on this work based on some work done for a neighbor. They quickly gave me an estimate and made it both with and without removing my old fence which had blown down. Their bid was competitive with others and I liked Jack's idea for how to install the new fence given that there was an old concrete mow strip to deal with. After acceptance, the work was scheduled quickly and they arrived on time. The two installers were very good. The took care for our property and cleaned up well. They pointed out some of the details of constructing the fence such as gap between the boards and clearance from the bottom prior to installation so there were no surprises. I would not hesitate to recommend these guys!
Description of Work: Installed 65 feet of cedar fence with steel posts, set posts in concrete mow strip, installed top cap

We moved into a new house with lots of acreage and needed the back yard fenced in for our dogs. Jack, the estimator, came over right away to give us a bid which we received in an e-mail within 24 hours of his visit. Unfortunately, even though we thought the bid was reasonable, they were so busy that we had to wait about 2 weeks for them to get started. However, while we were waiting, Jack took care of contacting the power company to find out if any of the post holes they would be digging would interfere with the power or water lines on our property. When the power company forgot to inspect a particular area, we called Jack and he took care of arranging for the power company to come back out to take care of it before Able Fence started the work. Everything went really well despite the fact that we were having a horrible heat wave and conditions for digging holes and putting up fencing must have been the worst possible. They were going to put us off another week due to their schedule, but because they knew that we desperately needed the fence for our dogs, they came out to work on our fence in between other jobs they were doing. Except for leaving a little bit of the dirt dug out for the posts, they did a terrific job. I would definitely use them again for future fencing needs.
Description of Work: Installed 337 feet of 5-foot no-climb horse fence and posts with 2 4-foot gates and 2 6-foot gates, including all hardware, materials, and labor.

The estimator brought his young son who was running all over the place. Then they emailed me their pricing and I emailed them back with some questions to which they never responded.

I called Able fence and left a message. I received a return call in a timely manner. Jack came out shortly thereafter to check out the problem and provide us with a bid. He was professional and timely. The crew showed up when he said they would and completed the work quickly. They did a very nice, high quality job of matching the existing fencing and we are quite pleased with the work. I've already provided their contact information to a relative with a fence project. I would absolutely hire them again.
Description of Work: Approximately 32 linear feet of 6' high cedar privacy fence blew down in our last windstorm. They replaced the fence and added a gate, matching the style of the rest of the fence that didn't blow over.

This is a nightmare story, with unusual aspects. They have still not billed me, or properly finished the job, so it is difficult to be too angry. The bid was done on 5/12, for 3 segments: 1. A new segment (22.5') extending an old out front. 2. A replacement of an old segment way in back, which was totally dilapidated, and falling apart. including cross beams (7.5') although not posts. 3. A new post between the neighbor and myself. They turned up on 5/26, after one postponement. Discovered the next post was rotted out as well, and I gave them permission to replace that post as well. They also discovered the Quest terminal box would need a 5' free space, so they shortened the new fence to be built out front by 5'. We agreed that that unneeded portion would would make up the cost of the new post in back, so the bid remained unchanged, but altered by that verbal agreement. The problem began when I came home and discovered a brand new section of beautiful fence between the two new posts (segment 3 and the verbal agreement). Unfortunately it sticks out like a sore thumb, since the rest of the fencing is grayed over the years. Both my neighbor and I agreed we preferred the old fencing, which was quite usable, and we weren't interested in paying for a new section on top of it all. I contacted the owner (who had done the bid, but not the work), who insisted that they never put up fencing that isn't new. I reminded him that I had agreed to a new post, but not new fencing. After going back and forth with attempted compromise solutions a couple days--which included my discovering that Segment 2 above actually DID include mostly reused slats(?!)--we finally agreed he would replace the new fencing (Segment 3 above) with the used slats from segment 2, adding from other sources any needed used slats, so that Segment 3 would look as it did before they replaced the posts. (I think the used slats present now Segment 2 were taken from Segment 3, since Segment 2's previous slats were quite rickety.) Dave turned up the following morning to view the situation, and insisted they'd get right on it. Be that as it may, today is June 21, and nothing has been done, and I have heard no further communications. One further irritating detail: All the new slats still have labels stapled on their bottoms, which I will have to remove as they are clearly visible.
Description of Work: Construction of a 16'+ segment of fence, extending an older portion, to the east of our house. (Segment 1) Replacement of a 7.5' segment of fence, at the very back of the above-named older portion. (Segment 2) Replacement of two posts in the backyard fence (south) and construction of new fence crossbars, and slats, between those posts (this latter, not requested). Note: I have entered a date for the work performed, although the job is not completed according to agreement.

Response from ABLE FENCE CO INC
Able Fence Co., Inc. strives to complete all jobs on time and with the highest quality products and workmanship in the industry. We have been doing this successfully since 1997. Our business is obtained, and has continued to grow, through word of mouth, our reputation and return customers. We are saddened that we were unable to satisfy "The Member". We made every effort to make things right and complete the job with the upmost integrity. Although "The Member" feels that we were not upfront with him about always using new wood when completing a repair and/or replacement of a section of wood fence, "new" is our only option. The wet weather in the Northwest often leaves the boards too damaged to reuse and often they break when the nails are removed. We are then unable to purchase "used" boards and replace any broken boards with "new" material. The fence board's will eventually weather to match the existing fence and everything will blend, unfortunately, this was not acceptable to "The Member". Eventually, we removed "used" material from one of our employees fence lines and installed the "used" material at "The Member's" home. Ultimately, we went back to the job site a handful of times to correct any issues that "The Member" brought up. The Member was also told not to pay until he was satisfied with the work. When all was said and done, the member paid for the fencing, which told us he was satisfied with the work. In the future, we will communicate more effectively so that customers are fully aware that when repairing a weathered wood fence, new materials have to be used and the repairs will be noticeable but will weather to match the older sections over time. We wish the best to "The Member" and use this experience as a learning tool for future projects. Thank you for the opportunity to learn and improve from this project.
