Fairly small company. From our experience they had more customers than they could handle. We had a bathroom remodel. They were knowledgeable in many areas, they didn’t whine when something went wrong, and were very hard working. We were more than pleased with job. We WILL use them again, Duanna!

Description of Work: Had a stair hand railing with metal decorative balusters, oak newel post and rails Dave did a superb job. His attention to detail is rare. His experience as a detail and mill work carpenter is obvious. We are extremely pleased. I have referred him to others and will continue to.

For the most part, it went great. Terry was incredibly responsive, informative, and thoughtful about extra expenses--as he told us what we could do to help cut down on the overall cost to him. After the last guy came to bid, and talked to us the entire time as if he was trying to sell us a car, this was a welcome relief! There was some miscommunication regarding when he was coming over to start the project, and since my husband and I work in Seattle, we need advance confirmation in order to be home. But we worked it out--and his team got to work the next day. The job was completed in a day, and he even left some leveling material for us to use in the future. Once we got home, he came by and thoroughly walked us through everything his team did. We would definitely hire Terry and his crew again! The only thing I would do differently when paying this much for a repair we can't see, is request pictures of the work be taken from the crawl space to confirm and inform. I can confirm from the upstairs the sloping bathroom floor feels much more stable, and from the crawl space door (away from spiders), the vapor barrier looks thorough.
Description of Work: Stabilized the sloping bathroom floor from the crawl space and spread vapor barrier in the crawl space.

Description of Work: Replaced three rotted support beams ( 4x8x10) over deck area with 3 pressure treated beams in order to have permanent roofing with skylights installed across that area of the deck by a roofing company I had already contracted previously. |Terry gave me the bid on 4/9/14, and knowing the urgency of replacing the beams, completed the job on 4/14. He even gave me Angie's list discount. Will definitely use him again in the near future.

I didn't get to see the changes in person, but the pictures and the reply from the real estate agent looked great. He replaced all of the windows. He painted the entire exterior of the house. He fixed a leak we had on the roof. That leak had caused the ceiling to basically collapse in part of our dining area and so he completely fixed that. Then there were other minor things that he did in the house. He replaced 19 windows in a house that was built in the 1940s. He was quick to go and look at the house, he was quick to give us an estimate. He would let us know whenever he got something done. He would send an invoice and send pictures so we knew where he was pretty much every step of the way. Also, we didn't have to pay it all upfront and whenever he said we were hitting the next step we would pay another bit of the amount.
Description of Work: I last used Tacoma Home Repairs for home repairs in June. He redid my windows, repainted my house, did some other odds and ends within the house.

Prompt and well done. This is verbatim from the invoice. Travel to site, measure vent pipe, travel to store to purchase. Install new transition pipe into chimney. First of all, Terry told me about the issue when he noticed it while he was working on my kitchen. I am grateful for that. In the past Have had other contractors with tunnel vision who did not tell me about serious issues they saw when they were doing other work on my house.

Description of Work: In April '12 I had a fire which destroyed the carport and garage of my home which was built in 1914. Because the company my insurance agent had recommended had proved incompetent during the initial cleanup, I consulted Angie's List and called Tacoma Home Repair. Mr. Hicks, owner of Tacoma Home Repairs, gave me an estimate for the work, complete with very good drawings. He came out immediately as soon as I called him, was creative in his problem-solving approach and thoroughly understood city codes and procedures. This is a very experienced contractor. The signed contract included removing the existing structures damaged by fire, breaking up the existing foundation, removing it and a tree that was encroaching on the proposed foundation, pouring new foundation as required by city, building an actual garage structure, devising a clever plumbing plan and replumbing the garage so that the new structure wouldn't flood (the last one did) and so that my basement wouldn't flood anymore. The team also installed 2 skylights and fold-down stairs in the new garage that they built. Mr. Hicks hired subcontractors to install the garage door, pour the concrete foundation and to do the more involved electrical work, which I think was a good thing. Their price was extremely reasonable.

Terry had done my addition last year and I had called him before I set the repipe date as I kinda knew this would be an issue. Terry came and fixed the floor and reset the shower and shower walls and installed new flooring. There was a small bit of wall patching work to do but Terry and his crew took care of that and I painted as I had paint left over from the addition job. I really love Terry and his crew and think of them when ever I need anything done in my home as I know he is dependable and reliable and will do a good job at a reasonable price. Thanks again Terry!
Description of Work: I was having repiping done and found that part of the bathroom floor needed to be replaced and that the shower needed to be installed properly. Some wood on the outside wall where the shower stand needed replacing too

When Terry first bid on the job I was undecided about a lot of the details. We had to make decisions as we went. There were little detail problems I didn't recognize and for the most part we were able to work them out. Some other things were overlooked and could have been done a little more to my liking. But again, I was making decisions as I went and in some cases, I changed my mind and asked him to wait until I could decide. I was ill prepared and I should have worked out the details prior to them starting the job. But even so, the completed project turned out very nice. The only thing that I would recommend is to work out as many details before the work begins and that all materials are chosen and that they are included in the bid along with clean up and removal of debris. Once the bid is submitted, and any changes occur, get the cost in writing prior to the work being done. We went back and forth with the amount paid and the balance owing and it became confusing and frustrating for both of us. Because of this I rated him with a B for professionalism.
Description of Work: Terry and his crew first put in a bay window in the bedroom and did a nice job (after correcting some initial mistakes). From there they went to work on tearing out a wall in the family room, moved the utility room to an old attached garage, closed up a closet door and opened it on another wall. The new opening was finished by Ray and he did a wonderful job with the arch. They also removed an outside door and installed, into a larger opening, a vinyl sliding door from Pella. They added a utility sink to the rest of the new utility room, moved and installed cabinets. We wanted a large utility sink but all we could find were the double basins. He routered out the separation in the sink so now we can clean our 30# salmons and the whole thing fits! He and his crew were always on time and worked full days.

We are very satisfied with the work done by Tacoma Home Repairs. The project began about a week later than we had expected, but there were three workers on the crew so it went quickly once they began. Demolition of the old bath tile and shower fixtures took only a day. Construction of the wall separating the tub and the shower and installing a new shower light fixture and a new bath fan was finished the second day. The tile installation took most of the time because we chose to use porcelain tile which is much harder to cut and drill. The cutting work took place in our garage and on our front porch, yet each day there was never a sign that the work had been done there as the clean up each day was very good. The work was done before our frameless glass door had arrived at the store so the crew left for a few days. The crew returned within two days once the door was in hand. We had a couple of follow-up issues that were not unexpected for a job this size, including a minor leak in the shower drain. Terry was here the morning after we reported the leak to get it fixed and then once we had made certain the leak had ended, a week later to repair the minor wallboard damage it had caused. Terry was in touch via phone or e-mail once we agreed to hire him through the end with the final repair. We never wondered where they were in the days before they began or when they would return while we waited for the door. The courtesy shown in Terry's treatment of us was appreciated. The job was completed for the price we had agreed. I would certainly hire Tacoma Home Repairs again. Update: A few months after the work was completed, we experienced some cracking in a seam in the wall Tacoma Home Repairs built between our shower and tub. Terry came to our home right after we called to see the problem. He asked that we wait for a bit to see if the crack grew or if the problem had ended. We agreed to that and after three months, the crack had not grown either in length or width. We called Terry with this news and he returned right away to patch this crack and repaint. We certainly appreciate his attention and promptness. Later update: About 18 months after the remodeling job above, I am forced to lower the grade and report that I would not hire Tacoma Home Repair again. It turns out that while remodeling our master bath shower, installing a light, new fixtures, a seat, new porcelain tile and floor and a frameless glass door, the contractor installed a drain pan in the floor that was not designed for use with a tile floor but rather fiberglass. Because of this, they also didn't install a membrane on the drain that is supposed to also run up the walls for several inches behind the wall tiles. We discovered all of this when a leak appeared in our family room ceiling, which is directly below the shower. Our new contractor removed a portion of the drywall and found that there had been a rather slow leak occurring for some time. The top side of the drywall was badly stained and there were stains in two locations on the floor joists as well. It took all this time for the drywall to get saturated enough for the leak to show through into the family room. Checking further the contractor found water between the shower floor tile and the drain pan that couldn't even reach the drain because the pan was angled improperly. We are now faced with having the shower floor and the lowest row of wall tiles all removed. Thankfully we have enough tiles left over to replace them because who knows if we could find the same color in these tiles all these months later. We are without use of the shower for two weeks. We have a hole in our family room ceiling that will need repair. And we are out another $1500 for all of this work. I can understand a problem developing in any big remodel. That happened to us and Tacoma Home Repair handled that just fine as I described above. What I can't accept is a firm installing the wrong type of fixtures in working on my home, and either not knowing they were doing it wrong or knowing and just hoping it might work. I just can't forgive that.
Description of Work: Tacoma Home Repairs was hired for the biggest job in a major master bathroom remodel that we have done in phases over two years. Terry Hicks and his crew removed the original 4 inch ceramic tile from around our built-in tub and our shower, installed new waterproof backing board, new shower fixtures, built a wall where an inexpensive glass shower enclosure had separated the shower and bath, installed a new frameless glass shower door, a new bath fan and a new light fixture in the shower ceiling plus a lot of new 12 inch porcelain tiles and some decorative glass tiles as well and then painted the whole room. The floor and bath vanity and tub and sink fixtures had been done by someone else in the earlier phases.

The quality of the service I have received from Tacoma Home Repairs has been outstanding. From the initial estimate through all the work, to correcting immediately any tweaks or problems- Terry Hicks (the owner) is always there. He and his crew are punctual, polite, professional, and skilled at their work. Additionally, and I might say most importantly, they are trustworthy and honest. I never had any qualms about them working around the house whether I or my wife was home or not. Having worked with lots of contractors getting my house remodeled, this has been a welcome trait of Tacoma Home Repairs. I would highly recommend their services to anyone.
Description of Work: Starting when the interior of my house was demolished down to the studs, Tacoma Home Repairs did a lot of the work to get it looking beautiful. They started by moving some walls around in order to free up space, added some beams to support new walls, and they also leveled out the house which it needed after 100 years. At the same time they leveled the house they replaced the front porch and replaced the front door. Inside they installed new cabinets in our kitchen, tiled 3 floors, and installed a bathtub. Tacoma Home Repairs also refinished our hardwood floor, and installed stone to the fireplace mantle.

They told us ways to do preventative maintenance and the right tools to use, which we completed this week. Over all, they they brought comfort to our home with their quality work and their wisdom in building a foundation toward future projects. This company is a diamond amongst the glass. Highly recommend.
Description of Work: We started out bidding on 2 window replacement and siding replacement due to water damage. Upon changing windows they noticed further damage due to previous contractors faulty work. He showed us what needed to be repaired and after ok'd went to work on the spot. As they were working they found other damage that could be easily fixed on the spot and made time for the repair after we ok'd the work. They used quality materials keeping in mind of future obstacles.

We bought a house that had a bonus room built in the garage. The room had been built at house floor level. The entry was from the dinning room. Since the room had been built without a permit and was not up to code we wanted Terry to bring it up to code. Terry went to the city planning department and received all the required changes that had to be made. All of the wood under the room that was touching cement had to be cut out and replaced with treated lumber. The insullation had to be replaced. That was difficult because of the lack of space in the ceiling. The cost to bring the room up to code was prohibitive so we choose to tear the room out. Terry had a good idea, instead of putting the washer and dryer on the garage floor, where they had been at one time, he said we could keep part of the existing floor and make a deck overlooking the garage with the washer and dryer on it. The design was great but then after further inspection we found out that this was bad work. After the work was completed, we started to notice squeaking when we would step on the platform. I have had two other contractors look at the work and point out the things wrong with it. The main support beam is not attached to anything which is why it is squeaking, he did not ancor the 4x4 post to connect them to the cement flooring and after this experience I would never hire him again.

Once ground was broken the addition went along rather quickly. The foundation and framing was completed in the first week. I was surprised at how fast it that part went. The weather didn't help much either. They had gotten the addition fully enclosed with the windows and doors before taking out the wall to the existing kitchen. So I did have kitchen use for a few weeks before the old one was torn out. There were a few bumps which I expected since it is an older home and you never know what you will find when you do something like this. Namely the truck got stuck in the mud out back and part of the fence had to be removed. They fixed the fence before the project was done. I was pleased that great effort was made in connecting the new to the old. It can be trying to get the floor level to match up. The roof and siding were matched exactly so the new addition looks like it always had been then there. We were quite fortunate that the cabinets we ordered came in early so there was no work slow down. They did all the painting before installing the cabinets. They installed the flooring as well. The window and door trim was also very nicely done. We are still waiting on some of the light fixtures to come in and had to buy some others to use until then. Terry said he will come back then to install them when they arrive. The deck is great and I'm very pleased with it. We let Terry choose the color of it and the railing he did a fine job with that We went with composite so we won't ever have to paint or stain. It is really a lovely space and done very well. I can hardly wait for sunny weather to fully enjoy this space. Terry and his crew are great to work with and do a good job of cleaning up after themselves. When they say they will be there at a certain time they are there. He did sub out the electrical and plumbing part of my job. While they did do a fine job they however did not clean up after their work. I like working with Terry and his crew and we did consult on some of the things I had in mind for my new space. They do listen to what you have in mind and do the best they can to make it happen. I do intend on having more work done on my house and look forward to having them back for that. I really appreciate all the hard the you guys did. Thank you so very much! Ray did an especially fine job on some of the little details of the project. He is stickler for the finish work and takes pride in his handiwork. I really love my new kitchen and dining room. It turned out beautifully.
Description of Work: We had a 12' x16' room added to the back of the house off of the kitchen and then tore out the old kitchen. Also added a 14' x 16' deck off the addition.
