About us

Father Nature Landscapes is a design, construction & maintenance company based in Pierce County and we have been in business since 2006. Our process begins with a visit to your property where we discuss what works, what doesn't and how you would like to use your land. We'll discuss the possibility of a design, quote a price on site making sure your goals are met and follow-up with a landscape design! During the design, we will create the yard of your dreams; then in the construction phase seek to provide amazing service, proactive project management and clear communication. Once the project is complete, we complete a final walk-through with you and will correct anything that doesn't meet agreed upon expectations. Description of Work: We are redoing our landscaping in the backyard and previously had an excavator in clearing areas and they also built the existing retaining wall. We paid for an hours worth of consultation and were wanting some ideas for planting areas. Arrived on time and spent approximately an hour. At one point I asked what the average price of their designs would be and was told $750 - $1,500. Granted, our area is large, but I was surprised when the price for a design came back as $2,500. We also asked for any recommendations on moving an existing structure and we contacted that individual who came out and basically demolished the building. We didn't get any recommendations for our planting areas. They probably would do decent job, but imagine when fully priced out would be very expensive.

It went spectacular!!! They were almost too quick, if that exists. We would come home to find significant amounts of work done in only 8 hours. They completed the work early and on budget!! They were always friendly and courteous also. If we ever need to do some more work or if we purchase a new house, Father Nature will be the first people we call.
Description of Work: We had them extend our irrigation system, from the initial work they did on our front yard earlier in the year. they built large 16x18 deck, with a beautiful awning and a trellis around a hot tub. They also surfaced a visuall dull cement retaining wall and faced it with a nice stone facing and created an amazing waterfall on the wall also. They also created a more stable walk path in the place where loose pea gravel used to be. Last, we added on a beautiful cedar fence to separate our new spectacular yard from our neighbors unsightly one. Instead of feeling dull and overwhelmed with the bland yard and non existent back yard, we now have our own little private oasis which is now almost resort-like!

They were timely and efficient on the day of work. Up until work was to happen, follow and responses were quick and accurate. Great customer service.
Description of Work: We wanted to create a "tree fence" to block out the yard below us. We determined the best tree for this job and Chris and crew went out and found them at the best price.

Chris responded promptly to my email, came out to walk property and discuss job, provide bid. Workers arrived on time and stayed until it was complete (6:30 pm). All was done as requested. The invoice matched the estimate -- no surprises or haggling. It couldn't have gone more smoothly. Very pleased, will use them again and would recommend them.
Description of Work: Landscape maintenance including freshen rocks on pathways, spread mulch on +/- 1/4 acre, replace 3 plants, build small retaining wall at heat pump, replace damaged landscape light.

Overall, they were timely, responsive, open to feedback, friendly and pleasant to work with. I am so happy we chose them! We will use them going forward to complete irrigation in our back yard and to build a deck and reface a wall in our back yard.
Description of Work: Father Nature transformed our drab front yard into a beautifully landscaped oasis. They installed a new deck, installed irrigation, faced a drab concrete wall, contracted out tearing up and relaying our driveway which was improperly sloped, installed landscape lighting, laid new sod, a stone pathway from the driveway and the street. We now have curb appeal!

Overall, we were extremely impressed with Father Nature - their professionalism, responsiveness, and willingness to go above and beyond to make the landscaping look great. Their bid was very reasonable among the four that we received. They were prompt, and very easy to reach by phone and via email. They were working with an outside concrete group which made for some difficulties getting info to them about when they could work, but they were flexible which we really appreciated. We worked with them to make some changes to the landscaping at the end (switching out some plants, building a trellis) and again, they were very responsive, friendly, and professional. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Father Nature Landscapes landscaped the front of our parents' house. We worked with a separate concrete company (Concrete Impressions) who removed the grass that was there. Chris and his team started from there and removed or transplanted the shrubs in the front, including transplanting a huge 20 year-old camelia that is doing very well a month later. They regraded the lawn area and brought in a large amount of topsoil and sod. The plants they chose and layout looks lovely, including a 6' tree. They also brought in and spread out gravel and mulch. Finally, they manufactured a large trellis and added a large pot with plants for the porch.

We are very happy with their work. We began working with Andrew. Ours is a small backyard and since I'm not a real gardener I wasn't able to be really specific about what plants, etc that I wanted, but when I said "New Orleans Courtyard" Andrew knew just what I was getting at. He got back to us quickly with a detailed estimate and plan, which we approved, and they were able to start work quickly. Andrew has a great aesthetic and extensive horticulture knowledge, plus a great crew supervised by Chris. The men worked long days during the hottest part of the summer, cleaned up after themselves, and were quiet and well mannered. Our yard turned out great--even better than we expected, the plants are beautiful, and Andrew and Chris were a pleasure to work with. They had a final walk-through, and prepared a good list of plants, care, and other things we needed to know for us to refer to later.
Description of Work: They completely reworked our back yard, including demolition of the patio, taking out overgrown shrubs, planting extensively, installing a new patio with a seating wall, built a pergola type structure, and did decorative lighting.

Chris and Andrew came out to give us an estimate and spent over an hour with us, walking around and offering suggestions (we had some concerns for how water was draining off the property). They also assisted us that day with adjusting our sprinkler system. They gave us some suggestions for directing the water which worked and were much cheaper than having them lay new drainage. They came out in about three weeks to do the landscaping and it was all done in one day. It looks beautiful. The workers cleaned up after themselves. They forgot to trim some low lying tree branches off the garage roof - this was something we had forgot to add into the written estimate so it's not a problem. Chris has offered to swing by the next time he's in the neighborhood to take care of it for me.
Description of Work: beds were cleared of debris. Three additional sprinkler heads were installed. Dead shrubs removed. Ground broken up and amended on one side of the house. fine mulch added to all beds. Front bed re-planted with two cyprus bushes. Side of house completely landscaped with new beds, blueberry bushes, nandina and a few other plants.

An email only takes a few seconds to draft, if only to relate that your company is very busy at the moment. Allowing potential customers to fall through the cracks in this way did not strike us as a good omen of future performance.
Description of Work: Because of the great reviews (and since this is one of the few companies in our area on Angie's List) we were excited to have them come out and help us with our backyard. The only reason the don't have an F for responsiveness is because the owner, Andrew, did email me back when I first contacted them. He indicated they would be back in touch the next week, and I responded with some proposed times to meet. Several weeks have passed with no response whatsoever.

Response from Father Nature Landscapes
Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Chris Scheer and I am the branch manager for the Tacoma Father Nature Landscapes. I was reviewing my account on Angie’s List today and came across your posting. Let me say I am truly sorry. Andrew has moved back to his home in Alabama, this transpired on August 22, 2009. My wife had our first baby on August 9 and we were going through a transition. Not to make excuses but I think your project must have fallen through the cracks. Once again I am sorry for this, as a company we pride ourselves on being timely and responsive to our clients. I would still like the opportunity to speak with you and come to your property for an estimate, if you so choose. Please understand that mistakes are made and please accept my apology. Thank you, Chris Scheer

If not for having to deal with a neighbor of mine who had nothing better to do than to call up every government agency he could find a number for in order to prevent me from getting my yard done, this job went very well. Andrew is very friendly, professional, and is a true landscaping artist. I interviewed 4 different landscaping companies (most found here on Angie's List) and Andrew was the one whose design was the most inspired and creative. We've received so many positive comments from family, friends, and even strangers on the street about how beautiful our yard is. I came in knowing that landscaping our yard would be expensive. I thought to myself at first that I would just hire someone to grade out the yard and just plant grass. I had read that people who spent money on their landscaping often did not get any return on that investment when they went to sell their house. Well I think my case will be the exception to that. Andrew has created a beautiful entertaining space outside. We spend so much time outside now that its like he's added square footage to my house. To me, this $30,000 was money well spent. After having built my house being my own general contractor, I was used to and wary of getting yet another unreliable contractor. Of the 20 or so different contractors I've used during this whole process, I can honestly say that Andrew with Father Nature Landscaping has been the BEST contractor I've used and I whole heartedly recommend his services to anyone looking to beautify and increase the value of their property.
Description of Work: Our yard was basically a blank slate before Andrew and Father Nature Landscaping got a hold of it. Well, a blank slate with an overabundance of weeds, rock and construction debris. After an initial consultation where I expressed my concerns over the drainage of my property, the grade of the existing topography toward my house, the view out of our great room windows (it faces our Glendon biofilter septic pods) and my concern over building in some privacy (I have a side yard that people from the street can see, not a backyard), Andrew created a masterful plan that addressed all of them. He carved out the topography and created a sunken patio area that provides privacy from passersby on the street. He installed a fire pit on a round, cement patio. He created raised planting beds that border and frame the yard. He planted a myriad of beautiful and nice smelling plants, some of which, when mature, will provide more screening from the street. He installed an irrigation system that, at first, I wanted to cut out of the budget, but now I'm happy I went with. It runs itself, has a rain sensor so it knows to turn itself off when it doesn't have to water, and keeps my grass green. He fenced in an area in the back and created another private area, as well as a dog run.

If I could put our experience into one word. It would be "OUTSTANDING". I met with the designer and I instantly felt confident that my one shot at landscaping my new home would be great. When the project was finished, I did not ever expect it to be that beautiful. They started the job during the winter and the crew worked everyday, all day and on time. It rained a good half the project and I watched the crew work and work. The project manager was easily approachable and great to work with. There were many changes that I decided to do during the project and other recommendations that they gave me. Changes were expected and not frowned upon. I had many experiences with contractors and this was truly the only great experience I've had. Our landscaping was featured in 2 magazines an we've been asked my another to have pictures taken this summer. I highly recommend Father Nature at doing any part of landscaping to small jobs to large jobs. Great warranty as well.
Description of Work: Father Nature did an outstanding job at building the entire landscaping around my waterfront home. They built beautiful retaining walls, laid concrete pavers, on multiple levels that tier down the slope. The design was way less expensive and way better than the Landscape Architects that I met with. They did everything including outdoor shower, outdoor kitchen, BBQ, firepit, spa, steps, electrical, gas piping, retaining walls, circular zen garden, lighting, fencing, gates, and amazing plants and gardening. My home increased by 4 times what I put into it. I feel the best way to increase your property value is by doing the right landscaping.

I called Andrew because of the ratings I saw on Angie's list. He was very pleasant. He came out and made suggestions for how to best utilize our back yard. I had had two other landscape companies come out and give an estimate. Andrew came in under both. He suggested we go with hydroseed to cut cost, which I appreciated. He also suggested we put in an irrigation system. I wasn't going to because of the cost, but Andrew was able to cut the cost by installing only in the back where it was most needed. Even though the overall estimate was lower than the other two I'd gotten, Andrew did not cut corners on quality. We got a cedar fence. The hardware for the gate is top-notch. Andrew suggested we go with a meandering walkway rather than just a straight one. We were well pleased with the results. The concrete guy, Joseph, did a fantastic job with that and the patio extension. Carl and Chris did a great job on the fence. The other two guys worked hard moving rocks, putting together the sprinkler system and prepping the ground for the topsoil. Andrew said the job would be done in four days and it was. We will definitely use Father Nature again if we have the need.
Description of Work: Transformed our back yard from a haven for rocks to a nice place to enjoy. Removed two or more truckloads of rock, leveled it out, installed irrigation, installed topsoil and hydroseed, put in a fence, expanded our patio & added a walkway to the front of the house.

I specifically chose this contractor based on Angie's List reports. Initially, my experience was very positive. Andrew was responsive, professional and prompt. I agreed to draw up a contract based on these good attributes. The work wasn't to take place until 2 months later, so he said he'd get back to me with drawings within 2 weeks. After 4 weeks had passed, no drawings. I emailed him and said that if we couldn't stay on schedule, that I'd find another contractor. He replied with a VERY unprofessional email. He eventually got a rough drawing to me. I didn't want someone around my home that replied in such an unprofessional manner. He called to apologize, but in his apology he blamed me for not asking for the drawings. I provided the documentaion to him proving that we had mutually agreed to have the drawings ready within 2 weeks. It appeared to me that he was most focused on large scale jobs. He didn't seem very interested in a small back yard project. I was very dissappointed.

I really love the work that Andrew does. He landscaped and installed an irrigation system in my back yard one year ago. We were so happy with his work, that we decided to have him landscape our front yard that was done prior to buying our home. I met him for an initial consultation to review what we didn't like about the current landscaping. We discussed a few of his ideas and then he came up with an initial sketch to work from. A few weeks later he was back with his crew to do the installation. We met to look at the plants and pot he brought to make sure I liked them. The final product is outstanding and we are extremely happy!

A bit of a schedule mix up at first for the estimate. Once I contacted Andrew, he apologized and came right over to do the estimate. We discussed the options for the drainage and the patio surface. Andrew was very easy to work with and knew exactly what we needed. The bid was sent to us via email later that evening. The price was a little higher than the others but due to his professionalism and knowledge we decided to hire Father Nature for the job. The day of the work the crew was right on time. They had the plan for what to do and began working right away. The drainage was completed quickly as was the gravel patio. They were finished within 5 hours and left before we could even pay them! I contacted Andrew later and thanked him for the wonderful work. He also wanted to do a follow up visit after a heavy rain to make sure the drainage worked properly. Unheard of! It is the attention to detail and superior customer service that makes businesses like this succeed. Hire this one with confidence.

When I first made the appointment for a bid with Andrew I warned him that our backyard was in terrible shape and would take all of his creativity to make it look nice. He was a little late to that appointment but called to tell us he was stuck in traffic on the interstate. At that meeting he asked us what we were looking for, discussed some options we hadn't thought of and then made a sketch of his vision. We told him we hoped to finish the landscaping in the two-week window between when we closed on the house and when we wanted to move in, and he thought that seemed possible. We asked if he would consider giving us a military discount and he said he would give us a discount of 5%. He gave us a rough estimate there and emailed me an official estimate by the next morning. Before we hired him we spoke with him on several occasions about how we might be able to compromise to bring down the price a little and he was always helpful and willing even though we did eventually decide it was worth it to spend more and get everything we wanted. We hired Andrew with the goal of having the project finished by Memorial Day weekend. He started the Monday before, telling me he hoped to have his crew at the house between 8 and 9am. When I arrived at the house at 8:15, he was there with 4 men and a very large truck full of the rocks for the retaining wall. They had already taken down the fence for access, had started re-contouring one of the planting beds, and he was giving them instructions on getting started. Throughout that day his men worked tirelessly. They never came inside the house, they never asked for anything, but if I had questions they were very prompt and polite. At one point during the day the equipment they were using to haul away the dirt stopped working, but they had another delivered and were back working within an hour. (I still don't know how they did it - the town we live in is so small we don't even have a grocery store, much less a construction equipment rental.) The rest of the week we were not at home but my husband stopped in to check progress. We were both impressed by how much progress they made in such little time. By Thursday they had the wall, stream and waterfall finished and all the trees planted along the top of the wall. On Friday Andrew came out to rearrange some of the smaller plantings because he felt they needed it and the guys installed the sod. The leader of his crew stayed around until I got to the house about 6:45pm to show us both the finished product and how to take care of the lawn and the plants until they were mature. We spoke with Andrew a few times after the project was completed for minor repairs. He was always quick and responsive and took care of everything we needed. The finished project was amazing, even better than we had hoped for and has added a lot of value to our new home. It's also really nice when the neighbors come over to comment on it and ask who did it for us!
Description of Work: The lot of the home we recently purchased was oddly shaped with a significant slope in the backyard. It is a pie-shaped corner lot that backs against the 90 degree angle of another property, which gives it a strange little niche in the fence line. Also the previous owners had mulched over the slope instead of landscaping it, so there was only a very small area of grass. We hired Father Nature Landscapes to hall away most of the dirt on the slope, install a rock retaining wall, a stream and waterfall that leads from the weird niche (making it look like it appears from the woods on the adjacent property) and falls onto a rock bed at the bottom of the wall, plant the area of top of the wall, re-contour and plant the planting beds on the main level of the backyard, and place new sod on the larger grass area.

The overall experience was great! I first met with Andrew for an hour consultation that was $65 dollars. I bounced ideas off him for the new back yard area and he gave input as to what he felt would work best for the space. I was really impressed with the initial meeting and after interviewing other landscapers felt he was the most knowledgeable. A couple of months later he was on site with a crew and finished the project in about a week. We met half way through the project to go over what was happening and also to look at the selection of trees and shrubs he brought before planting them. There was a window broken during the project, which was replaced at no charge to me by a window company. The mortar in the flagstone patio was also replaced once as Andrew felt it didn't look right the first time around. The yard and landscape has really taken off and we are enjoying the new space this summer!
Description of Work: Andrew designed and installed a new irrigation system, flagstone patio, sod, landscaping, regraded the back yard, moved an existing drain and installed a new gate to create a dog run.
