We had the fan installed. I think my husband was the one here when it was done. It was pretty simple, they just came in and installed it. We were happy with them and were thinking of having some other work done by them. The price was slightly lower than other prices I've seen, so it was a little bit of a deal but it wasn't huge or massive.
Description of Work: We used a Big Deal with ecoInsulate Northwest to have a solar powered fan installed in May of 2012.

The service we received was not even worth the $99.00, because they were confirming what we already knew - our house was drafty and we lack insulation. We were looking for a detailed report of what was right or wrong in all areas of the Energy Audit and how to go about fixing these and the cost.
Description of Work: We paid $99.00 for the Whole Home Energy Audit that was valued at $350.00. What we would get was: Air Leakage Testing Insulation Analysis Thermal Envelope Mold Growth and Ambient Carbon Monoxide Thermal Imaging Scan Blower Door Testing Report give upon completion with suggestions to maximize your home's energy savings and increase comfort level He did the Blower Door Testing and walked around with a camera that showed in black and white if we needed insulation. However, we already knew that we had air leakage because we had drafts and needed insulation because it is a brick home. Thank goodness we did not pay $350.00 for something we already knew was happening. However, he never went up in the attic or addressed the moisture in the ceiling in the bathroom that started after remodel, never spoke of mold or carbon monoxide and I do not know if he performed the other items listed. But I know that we did not get a report of the information. They were swamped and he would mail it to us within a few days, but almost 7 months later have not received any information.

We purchased an Angies list coupon for installation of a solar powered fan/roof ventilation. The first appointment to inspect the attic area and plan installation was very satisfactory, and there were other energy saving assesments that were compared to current building standards; ceiling insulation, floor insulation, re-sealing heating ductwork, etc. These services were estimated and offered (and considered by the homeowner). The scheduling and installation went very smoothly and we are very happy with the work product and result (a cooler attic in the summer months). My husband met the installer reported that the installation was efficient. I was not at home during installation. Because the work took place on a second story roofline, I would like to offer other homeowners a helpful tip.. Safe work is everybody's concern. ENSURE THAT WORKERS ON ROOFS USE FALL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT. EcoInsulate did a fine job. Safety is number 1.

I hired Ecoinsulate to sound-proof windows between myself and my neighbor (complicated) and manufacture and install four sets of french style doors to hide and sound-proof existing elevator doors. Brett, the owner, showed great promise ... creative solutions and design. However, they have failed on execution. The window sound-proofing went relatively smooth, but the finish work - though effective - was tacky. It's easy enough for me to do some additional painting so no huge complaints with that. However, the elevator doors turned into a nightmare. I am in the process of vetting and hiring another company to finish the work started by Ecoinsulate and also to build out the other three sets of insulation doors. Delay after delay after delay with every producer-focused excuse you can imagine ... they finally hung one set of doors, but they've never finished the insulation work. On installation day, I pointed out to the installer that I could see gaps where light and sound could easily travel, including a big gap between the door and floor. The installer replied ... "that's how all doors are" and dismissed my concerns. One french door was slightly warped, which created a gap where they meet in the middle. His solution was to stick a piece of scrap wood between the gap at the top thinking eventually the warp would correct itself, which it did not. Keep in mind, these doors were designed for the sole purpose of seriously dampening elevator noise. Someone from EcoInsulate did stop by the next day and confirmed further insulation work was required and they would follow-through. I haven't heard a thing from them since. Not a returned email or phone call from anyone. Since it's been a month and half, I assume they've written this one off, and I am writing them off. In the end, despite their creativity and knowledge, they could not get the job done and I don't have the impression they care. Perhaps the scope of the work was beyond their expertise and they simply gave up. I'll never know.
Description of Work: Sound-proof windows between neighbors Install four sets of french style doors to sound insulate existing elevator doors on each floor of townhome. Other miscellaneous insulation and wall patches Potential to be $13,000 for all projects.

Like many service providers who participate in Big Deal offers, ecoInsulate was overwhelmed by the response and associated scheduling crunch. This isn't a huge problem, and is generally expected. The problem is that our installation was scheduled and rescheduled several times, often with last-minute notice. This led to us making arrangements to be home for the installation several times, to no avail. Communications were friendly and apologetic, especially once the owner (Brett) followed up directly. The fan installation was eventually completed, but the scheduler indicated that the in-home insulation consultation would be scheduled separately. We never heard back with final confirmation that the installation was completed, nor to schedule the consultation. Overall we would likely not use this service provider again for more comprehensive work.
Description of Work: Purchased a big deal for solar attic fan installation and insulation consultation. Attic fan installation was performed (eventually). Never received the consultation.

I purchased The Angie's List Big Deal. It was $500 worth of insulation for $149. The salesman came and took measurements and gave me a quote to insulate my attic. Several phone calls and a few emails I got a quote (3 weeks later). The price was reasonable and even though the salesman was slow to respond he was always polite. I ended up having to get a unexpected surgery and could no longer afford the whole package. They said not to worry because they would honor the coupon when I could come up with the money. I asked if I could just get the amount of insulation I paid for in the deal and was told what I purchased was just the bare minimum to get the truck to the job site and was only used towards the cost of the whole project. When I came up with enough money to complete the project I could not reach the salesman. I may consider these guys for future projects but will definitely consider other options.

To make this a fair review - the saleman / maybe the owner and the job forman were real professional and did alot to keep everything running smooth throughout most of the job. With that said the "crew" that did the attic were top notch at what they did. I was off work that day so i could keep an eye on what they were doing. I could tell they knew what they were doing. The job under the house is another story - maybe the crew didnt want to be under the house that day. I was not there (had to work that day). The crawls are suppose to be somewhat cleaned out and reinstalled with new vapor barrier, The vapor barrier was cut short so there were small bare spots left open, most of the junk under the house was still there with the vapor barrier unstalled over the top of it. AT THIS POINT I WILL TELL YOU THIS IS ONE OF MY RENTAL HOUSES - so I bought the house with the junk under in the crawls. The rest of the job I thought was done until my renter told me the water took a while to warm up in the bathroom, with further looking the water pipes at the end of the house buy the bathrooms was left out in the open without insulation. The insulation under the floors looked like it was done correct to me the untrained eye. I called the salesman and told him the pipes were not insulated about 3 weeks ago - and this last weekend I crawled under the house and the pipes are still not insulated. :o( Also at this point I cleaned out all the junk myself and recut and moved the barrier around to cover most of the crawl. Above I put I wouldnt use them again because their wasnt a maybe, so if they get all my issues taken care of I could try them again for some more rentals. I had Clean Crawls do my own house and did not have not one issue to screw around with!!! ps - They are more exspensive than Ecoinsulate

EcoInsulate Northwest were really trying to upsell us to do 2 which we didn't need because our house. It took a couple of times for the to schedule and it took 3 times for them to reschedule, twice was because of a ladder, they needed a higher ladder. Beware of your own needs based on the footage of the roof area and not necessarily be talked into needing more than one. They did the work but it was a bit of a hassle but the end result was fine.

The exterior walls of my house still feel cold to the touch and the overall objective i was hoping to meet was not met. I definitely would not use or recommend them.
Description of Work: 1.) Company installed solar powered attic fan. 2.) Company installed insulation to exterior walls. The installation of the insulation did not go as well as I would have liked. Some of the siding they removed cracked and was repaired with caulking. Installers did not check for opening in the wall that led into the interior so some of the insulation leaked inside the house. The siding that was removed to allow them to inject the insulation was not placed back on the house the way it was before they removed it.

I signed up for their big deal whole house energy audit. I contacted them and was able to schedule an appointment within just a few days. The technician (sorry forgot his name) showed up on time on the day of the appointment and got right to it. The good: my husband accompanied the technician throughout the house while he used his thermal tool to point out cold, leaky and uninsulated areas in our house. He also offered some great ideas about things big and small that we could do to improve our home's energy efficiency. We asked for estimates from the company to do some of the bigger insulation work with the idea of doing it in a couple of passes to keep the costs affordable. The bad: we never heard from ecoInsulate again. No written report of our energy audit, no estimate for recommended insulation work...nothing. My husband called and left a message asking for the written estimate...still nothing. So for $99 we did get the audit and the information we were able to remember from the visit but we were disappointed with the lack of followup.

I recommend doing this during cold weather...the camera really made it all worth it...it revealed air leaks and heat leaks I never imagined. I plan on using the time to fix these leaks and request a revisit. The tech was very pleasant to work with being very knowledgeable with helpful suggestions. I do plan on them for future projects.

I asked them to do the floor insulation and weather stripping for two doors. First of all, the person who came to my house to give me a bid promised to do two things they could not even follow through. I didn't like the attitude of the technician who came to do the actual work. He was kind of upset when I brought up these two things supposed to be done. He said he could not do these two things. Also, they charged $100 for a very basic weather stripping (non-professionals can easily do this kind of work.) for just for one door. They didn't even check if the lock would work after installing the weather stripping. After they left, I found out that I could not use the deadbolt lock on this door. I complained and told them that I didn't want to pay $100 for such a sloppy job. They quickly gave me a credit for this which was good. I ended up having the weather stripping for just one door. (I had to replace another door.) The floor insulation didn't make any difference. The bid they gave me for the wall insulation was $3000. I thought it was pretty expensive and decided to ask another company to do the wall insulation. They only charged me $933! The owner of this company looked at the floor insulation done by ecoInsulate and said they did a really bad job. He showed me how bad it was. The insulation was not attached to the floor (there is a huge gap between the insulation and the floor.), so the cold air still comes through. They also left some insulation unwrapped. I feel like I wasted a lot of money. I don't understand why this company gets good reviews.

The company was responsive, the installation went smoothly, and we are pleased with the results.
Description of Work: We purchased the deal for an installed attic fan and they called and were on site the next day to see our attic and to do an energy analysis. They determined that our heating bills were quite high considering we have a newer, energy efficient furnace, and they recommended installation of attic insulation at the same time as the fan. We purchased this as well, and the job was completed within a week or two. Our heating bills have been remarkably lower ever since, and our house stays at a more comfortable temperature regardless of the season.

Ordered a solar powered attic fan (Angie's list promo). Scheduled an installation date in September, but they failed to show. Rescheduled for early October. I had been informed I didn't need to be home, so I wasn't. Unfortunately, I was not told the installer needed to use my electricity, so I didn't provide access to any. Then had some email snafus when they tried to reschedule during the first part of my vacation, when I'd be out of state, but I called them on the phone and learned they were aware of my request to come later. Finally had the installer come out in late October. Installation was quick and it seems they adequately sealed the hole they cut in the roof as the rain isn't leaking in. Unfortunately, the purpose of the fan was to cool the attic in summer, so I really don't know how well it will do that yet.

Was proactively called for appt by compnay. Unfortunately they kept sending emails with repeat delays due to the high demand and issues with the supplier. They were very polite and professional so this didn't bother us at all. They were exceptionally good about keeping us informed. One thing however, is that they didn't leave any information regarding the operation or maintenance regarding the attic fan. Just something similar to a package insert with a picture of the fan on it was left showing that they had been there.

I can understand that Ecoinsulate northwest was trying to break through into doing a new service to bring in more jobs, but they should have the certification before selling the job. I bought the Big Deal from Angie's list to get the oil tank decommissioned. I called and got tentatively put on the schedule for the next week. I was not contacted to be told for sure if they could come. I called back got put on the schedule for 2 weeks later and they didn't come. I was told numerous times they were scheduled to get certification and was put on the schedule for the following week. I waited once or twice for them to come. Finally, I was told they weren't able to perform the job and I should contact Angie's list for a refund. I found the people at Ecoinsulate easy to talk to and they seemed professional enough over the phone, but they definitely dropped the ball on this one.
Description of Work: Ecoinsulate does not perform oil tank decommissioning. Yet, that is the job I bought through Angie's lists Big Deal.
