Dr. Decks

Jason is a perfectionist when building decks. Our job turned out beautifully and perfect. He may be hard to get a hold of/ or maybe not the quickest response but he is well worth the wait. He is intimately involved in every aspect of the deck building and runs a very small crew. Awesome guys all. I would heartily recommend to anyone. Plan and schedule your project well in advance as Jason is a busy guy. Again...well worth the wait. You will be happy that Dr. Decks is the business you chose. We have loved our deck every day for the past year when it was replaced!

Jason and his team were first rate and I couldn't have been more pleased. Jason designed and created beautiful decks, one with glass panel railings, and a very attractive and useful bench area around a raised concrete deck above our pool area. The previous structures were unsafe and poorly designed. Jason's work totally transformed my backyard. At the time we hired him we were on his waiting list a few months but it was totally worth the wait. I have recommended him many times and will continue to do so. He and his team are very professional and attentive to the tiniest detail.

Jason and his team were true professionals from day one through the entire project . They had to deal with some of the worst weather we had in late 2015 building over 800 square feet of deck, all of which is elevated from 3 feet in front front of the house, to the majority which is elevated from 6-9 feet on the side and back. Jason always kept us informed on progress, explained how he was doing things and asking if we had any questions. We asked for a stronger deck then normal for a greater level of safety because of having a family member in a power wheel chair. The composite decking will make for easier up keep,and the heavy construction makes for a very solid surface. We are very pleased with the covers installed over the back deck and spa area and the way they follow the roof line of the house, making for an enjoyable outdoor living space.

Because of the large size of our deck this project took 4 weeks to complete and during the entire time Jason and Phil showed up on time each morning and worked an entire 8 hour day. They never stopped for lunch but just took a short break and then continued working. Each day before they would leave the work site they cleaned up the area. They were very professional and I never once heard any bad language from them. Jason did everything we asked of him and was the easiest guy to work with. I trusted him and never worried that the end result wouldn't be what we wanted. He is a perfectionist and cares about doing good quality work and wants to make sure you are happy with the end results. I wish he did other things besides building decks because I would hire him in a flash because of his high standards and his quality of work.

we found another contractor

It was very expensive but, very good. They were timely and worked very well. They are a small company. There are two people and they do outstanding work.

He came out, and he was very personable. He builds decks and he also does the covers for deck. I didn't want the very dark covers, I didn't want to block out light. I wanted it lighter, but the new material stuff is expensive, and so I don't think we will be doing it this year. I am sure he does a good job, with the pictures that I had seen on the web, and on his site. It looked really good. It took several weeks for him to come out, appointment wise.

It was fine but I went to someone else as that business was more responsive.

My husband and I started replacing our porch, thinking it would be easy to replace a few boards. As we demolished it, we realized there was a lot of rotting wood underneath. By the time I started calling contractors, we were knee deep into the project. Jason came over and my husband and I were in the middle of working on our porch. After looking at what we were working on, he was very honest with us and explained that he probably couldn't be of any help due to the style that we were working with and how far into the work we had already into. He asked what we planned on doing. We explained and he proceeded to spend almost an hour making suggestions about the types of materials that would be helpful to use and how to make our porch as sturdy and strong as possible. This was extremely helpful as we have limited knowledge about how to go about building porches. We both have full time jobs in career paths not at all related to construction! He explained that he prefers to use high quality materials and ensure that he will not cut corners. The materials he recommended were a little more expensive but when you're talking about a place that you walk on every single day and it has to carry heavy loads including furniture, we would rather work hard now than work more later. If we needed to rebuild our deck, we would definitely call him and let him do all the work! He even returned with a sample of a material that he uses, so that we could see how it might work. Who does that? He didn't have to do that. We asked about him at the local lumber yard and they had nothing but good things to say about others that have used him. We appreciate the time, energy he spent with us. He had a pleasant personality, was funny, yet professional. Thank you!

I called and left a message on the phone for Dr. Decks from their website. My call was returned 1 week later and Jason's wife scheduled a date to come give an estimate for our deck. She called back in a few days stating she lost the date that her husband was suppose to come to our house to to please give her a call to reconfirm the date. I called and left another voice mail and go no response back. On the originally scheduled date, no one showed up from Dr. Decks and I called and left another voicemail to let them know they were no shows and STILL didn't get a response!!

PHENOMENAL, FANTASTIC, TRULY ELOQUENT We had decided to have a deck installed that could be accessed through the patio door. Since we had seen many styles, designs, themes and materials to choose from, we wanted to find a company that could help lead us in our decisions. It is difficult to fully express how completely happy we are to have had the opportunity to work with a contractor that is just as much as a true artist. We contacted Dr. Decks to prepare a proposal for a new deck. Jason, the owner of Dr. Decks came by at the appointed time and day. We basically showed him where we wanted to build the deck and size. He prompted us with various questions, for example in regards to type of material we would like, railing, and when we would like to begin. We told Jason that we were unsure of most of his questions but had asked if he could provide a bid that would include the cost for a deck to be built from Red Cedar, PVC, or Ipe, a sustainable tropical hardwood. During our meeting, he had asked if we had viewed is website, of which we had. He also explained to us that he does the sales, design and the construction himself and has only one other person to help him. In addition, he noted to us that he does not ?subcontract? any portion whether it be sales, design or the actual construction. In this way he has complete control of the quality of the product. A bid was received from Jason a few days later and we chose Ipe as the material to be used and scheduled a construction date. A simple but concise contract was signed and construction began on the day promised. As construction proceeded, we were in complete awe with what we saw. For example the joists were set at 15 inch centers. He said when he started he was going to set them at 16 inch centers but that aesthetically it would look better when the deck was fastened down since the rows of fasteners would be equal distant from each side of the deck. Another example is his ability to acquire full lengths of decking material to have as few butting ends. As a result, over a 17 foot depth we have only 7 butted boards. As the project continued, a short rail was installed but with a top that would also provide seating (almost 19 inches wide!). We had not even considered this as possible. He also decided that it would look better with evenly spaced vertical slats below the rail/seats; leaving a 3.5 inch gap between the floor of the deck and the bottom of the slats so that sweeping leaves or deck maintenance would be easier. Again, we never had even thought of this. In the end, every exposed area of the deck that can be seen is Ipe. Even the ends of the treated support beams were capped with Ipe. The fastener holes that the rail posts are installed have black caps to cover the fasteners. Most of the pieces of wood that comprised the project were cut/milled with such precision that the joins were seamless. After the project was completed and even though the material was pretreated, Jason treated the entire deck with an oil base finish specifically developed for tropical hardwood deck. As a final word, there are many fine deck contractors available but if you want a beautiful, truly high quality deck, give Dr. Decks a call and give them a basic idea of what you want and just let him go. As he told me "YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!".

The best experience I've ever had with a contractor. He can use me as a reference anytime

I like their creativity. I had several people come in and give me ideas; I just said here is the canvas and asked them what they would do. Jason Russell, the owner has great vision and is extremely meticulous; he showed me a lot of pictures of what he had. I am just absolutely thrilled with what they are doing. They were outstanding. Their price was comparable. I would recommend them to anybody. Anybody who wants to take a look at this job can call me and look at it.

He paid close attention to detail and we loved his creativity where there was flexibility in the design. The other builder was very cookie cutter like and we wouldn't have gotten the detail that this guy has.

I didn't feel it necessary to get more than two estimates. After realizing the design I envisioned: 500 sqft over 3 levels (each level with multiple angles), Jason (the owner/builder of Dr.Decks), was the one contractor who best understood what I wanted. He turned out to be an easy choice, and the best choice. His 3D rendering of our deck design was amazingly dead-on. Once he and his co-worker Phil got started, we were amazed by their attention to detail. You?d think they were building our deck for their own families. Jason is a perfectionist and worked hard to ensure that what he built was exactly what we wanted. And he had some great ideas we hadn't considered. The finished deck is so much more impressive than we ever imagined. The entire project took three weeks. The price paid was more than we anticipated but we really didn't have anything to compare it to. But when we realized during construction how much effort went into putting the deck together, we realized we were actually getting more than our money's worth. They are obviously very good at what they do.

He was wonderful and very professional. He was very knowledgeable. He did a drawing of the plan and emailed it along with the quote. He had pictures to show us about his work. He was good.

I needed three decks. Two of the decks were a kind of difficult as it was very high and needed to be supported with a beam because it could not have any support underneath it except on the ends. In the two decks, one was about 15-feet high. He came to our house. I was very impressed with him. I saw some of the work he had done and they were beautiful. I was very much interested in getting the deck done by him. He went into great detail. He had materials. He was very professional. He could show me a lot of things so that we can make some decision and he would make a note of it. We had a nice conversation. Two weeks later, he did not followup and I had to e-mail him asking for a quote. He did send me a 6 lines long quote through an e-mail and it had a total with no details. I did not respond to his e-mail and he never got back to me after that. I was disappointed with that. Then, I got a quote from another deck builder and they are very highly rated on Angie's list. I was impressed with him also, but I cannot say more impressed than the other guy. I really do think that he probably does an excellent work, but I think he mainly needs more help or something. He was on time. He took so long to get back to me and I had to actually contact him. This made me wonder what happens next if he does not show up. This was my concern. I would consider using Dr. Decks LLC service to give me a quote in the future too.

Jason did the work himself and the workmanship is top-notch. Curteous, cleaned up daily, even took a long lunch one day when we had a luncheon guest. A pleasure to work with.

First off, the response to the initial contact was slow. When Kim finally did respond, he rescheduled the estimate a couple of times. When Kim arrived at our home, he noticed it would not be a big job, so his demeanor changed immediately. He was far more curt with us. He took measurements and talked about how great his designs were and how he had been featured in a book, but spent far less time on what components that he suggested for the deck or other information concerning our deck project. Once he left, he promised to have designs and estimates to us within a day, but it took closer to a full week. During the discussion, he had talked about all sorts of features that would improve the deck, but the final designs were quickly generated computer designs of a square deck with none of the nuances that he had talked about or in which we had shown interest. Even with the very simple square 10'x10' deck, he wanted to charge over $15,000. His demeanor onsite and language in the email indicated to us that we were not worth his time.

Kim has built 2 major decks for us in the last year on two different houses. On the first one, he took us from a standard flat deck to multi-level connected decks. He is full of good ideas and practical solutions to existing problems. On the second one, he was constricted to a specific design on a storm-damaged deck; but he managed to improve on the original design with good ideas and imaginative use of space. Kim is honest and thorough. He sticks by his bid. His crew is small, but excellent. We just had a huge party this last week on the first project, and the guests raved about the beauty and workmanship of the decks. Both jobs involved other construction work on the house, which was done with highest quality of workamanship. Kim is not a low-budget, quickie contractor, but you definitely get your moneys worth!
