Description of Work: SBI Performed an Energy Audit on our 3500 sq ft home in Kirkland. I was very impressed by their leak detection method, in which they closed all windows and doors, attached a vacuum to the front door, and measured cold air intrusion. They made recommendations for door, window and attic insulation upgrades which I later implemented with professionals I already knew. Our home now feels tight and the gas furnace doesn't cycle as often.

 + -1 moreWas a pleasurable and informative process all around. The tech was running a few minutes late, but called to confirm he was on his way... not a problem at all. Setting up the blower door takes about 10-15 minutes, and then he/she will walk through your home (you get to tag along) with an infrared imager and a hand-held non-toxic smoke generator. These two items will reveal any drafts or leaks coming from window casings, door frames, outlets, light fixtures, etc. The IR camera can also show where wall insulation is missing or displaced. Time was also spent in the attic and crawl space checking insulation quality & depth, as well as ventilation and moisture protection. The tech will give you a multi-page summary of the findings, including recommended fixes, and answer any questions you have. Who process should take 2-3 hours. In my opinion, money well spent to learn the good and bad points of my home's construction that can't always be seen with the naked eye.
Description of Work: Energy audit that included connecting a blower door to the front door to check for drafts, and visual inspections of the attic and crawl space.

 + -1 moreI contacted SBI by email requesting an estimate. I received telephone response within one hour. Scduled appointment for the following week. Paul arrived on time. He spent nearly an hour crawling under our house inspecting the duct system. When he was finished with the inspection, he prepared the written bid. He explained the bid to me using photos of our crawl and answered all of my questions satisfactorily. I contacted the office the following morning. Elizabeth scheduled the work for the next day. I was so pleased to to have the work scheduled that quickly. The technician showed up the next day on time. He completed the work in less than six hours. The job was done exactly as I expected. I was not only completely satisfied with the work, I was impressed with the friendliness, professionalism, and competence of each of the three persons with which I interacted.

 + 0 moreSBI did a fabulous job, both with my energy audit and the insulation and sealing work, mostly in my crawlspace. They were knowledgeable and professional, kept me updated as to status as the work was proceeding, and in general wonderful to work with. The office gave me reminder calls prior to appointments, and also sent a thank you note afterward. The guys did quality work, were careful about my floors and about cleaning up afterwords, and I was extremely pleased with the results - I loved the fact that the estimate was extremely detailed and descriptive about just what they were going to do, the materials used and what the cost was. They use all green materials, which is important to me, and I would highly recommend them to anyone doing a home energy audit or insulation/weatherization work!
Description of Work: SBI first did a home energy audit, and spent several hours doing this work and giving me a verbal and written report, along with photos of the areas I could not see myself. One of the findings was that I had a major rodent problem in my crawlspace, they had chewed their way through the vent screens had torn up a lot of the insulation and made nests. I asked for a written estimate to fix the access points, do rodent removal, redo the insulation and seal the ductwork along with some minor work in the attic area. They gave me a very detailed work description, and I had them come back to do the work. It took 2 full days to remove all of the old material and then redo the crawlspace area with new underfloor insulation, pipe and duct insulation and duct and floor vent sealing and plugging rodent access points along with vent screen repair.

 + 0 moreSBI's salesman and building performance analyst, Paul, is very knowledgeable, and he generously shared his information with us. He patiently explained and answered my questions. We agreed on the scope of the work that SBI would do on our house and on the small remodeling project (a separate tiny cottage). The work was completed in a very timely fashion, less than two weeks from initial contact. The installers stayed late to complete all the work in one day, and cleaned up well after their work. We noticed immediately a difference in the warmth inside the house. We are also pleased that SBI provides a non-toxic alternative to polyurethane foam insulation, and fiberglass batting. After the insulation was installed, we noticed that our telephone service was intermittent, and wondered if it could be related to somehow to the new attic insulation. My husband emailed SBI to ask if that might be a possibility. They immediately scheduled two workers to come and investigate the problem. The two thoroughly checked out the phone lines and fixed the problem even though it did not seem to be related in any way to the insulation. We did not expect that level of service at all! We felt that SBI had gone above and beyond reasonable service to provide us with exceptional service.
Description of Work: Sustainable Building and Insulation provided us with several services. On a small 2-room remodeling project, they installed wall and ceiling insulation before new drywall went up. In our attic, they removed 30 year old insulation and installed eco-batt insulation to bring it up to current code. In our crawl space, they sealed furnace ducts and wrapped all in eco-batt insulation. Their building performance auditor, Paul, also performed a whole house energy audit, giving us a number of insights and suggestions on reducing energy use.

Description of Work: Following up on a Big Deal Inspection. I contracted to get the recommended work done. The office staff told me it would be a 1day install. Then I was called back and told me it would be a 2 day install due to the heavy removal work of theold insulation. They gave me a 9-10 start time but actually did not arrive till 1030am. The crew was professional but not very personable, but they got about the task at hand. The fisrt day the removed the old insulation, cut in roof vents and left loose (it rained the next day). The next day they arrived around 1015, having inspected the attic space the previous night I asked them if they were going to continue with the removal and attach and seal the roof vents, they assured me they would. They attached a large vaccum hose and suked out all the old dirt and insulation,they added lower air baffles and sealed the new vents in. They blew in the R-49 insulation to the recommended depth and insulated the roof hatch and they were out of there! I inspected the attice and they left a certificate attached to a joist and a ruler verifing the depth. This will come in hany for a future home inspector should I decide to see the home. My only recommendation is that they try and give the realistic arrival times so you don't have to call if they are not there on time. I live North and they stage in Tacoma so for future travel just give the customer a good time. I understand traffic. This would help and eliminate other reviews mentioning late arrival time etc. All in all a good job and would recommend to others. The insulation has made a difference, the home now maintains a comfortable even tempature throughout.

 + -1 moreOne of my best experiences of any company I have worked with through Angies List. As a real estate agent, I was interested in not only finding out more about my own home's energy efficiency, but I was also interested in learning more about the audit, in general, to determine if it might be of use to my home buyers. The SBI rep, Paul, was so well spoken and knowledgeable about the testing, the instruments used, and the ways in which the audit could be utilized that I truly thought he was the owner of the company. In that I was mistaken, and the real owner of the company should consider himself blessed to have such a dedicated star employee. After running the tests, Paul walked through the house with me, showing me where the areas of leakage were and suggesting improvements and corrections to improve the overall energy efficiency of my older 1920's home. I learned a lot and was most impressed with his professionalism. After hearing of some of his findings in other properties, I am convinced that this type of audit could be very worthwhile for many buyers prior to purchasing a home, much like a building inspection. I will be recommending this service in the future.

Description of Work: Signed up for ''Big Deal'' the attic inspection and it was sheduled and Paul was prompt and professional.He discussed the process and the inspection.He went up into the attic and conducted his inspection.I also popped my head in and he was attentive to my questions and expalined to me that my isolation had servied its useful,life and indicated rodents had been living up there.He explained ways to improve the isolation.The home is over 60 years old and when I bought it 15 years ago the insolation was adaquate but I installed a new forced air furnance and solar tubes and a attic fan.He also looked at the condition of the roof and no leaks were indicated.I am in the Facilities maintnenace field and in my job work with contracters and trades all the time so I can tell when someone is trying to snow you.He prepared the report with photos and recommendations.I responded and asked for a bid for the work recommended and was sent one.I am going to have the work done as soon as I get the money.

The report (including photos of the crawl space) was detailed yet easy to read .We then had SBI do the repairs needed as a result of the audit. They installed insulation, vapor barrier and sealed the duct vents.The installers were also very professional yet friendly. We would highly recommend this company!

 + -1 moreI think it went well. I'm hoping the job is up to current code for insulating attics and ducts. The appointment process went well, they got me in fairly quickly. Two employees arrived on time in the morning and started work immediately there were courtesous but very focused on the job at hand. They prepped the attic and also started on insulating the three solatubes, they removed the two old accordian like plastic bathroom fan ducts and installed 4" rigid metal ducts and attached them to one of the roof vents and insulated the ducts. Capped two can lights. Approx. 10"+ of cellulose was blown into a 1100 sqft attic. The celluslose I was told is a borax based product that helps to resist rodent inifestation. From my research this is a slightly more expensive product if that was actually blown in. I didn't see the brand. The work took approximately 3 -1/3 hours. They cleaned the premises and left. I'm not sure if I'm saving money on my fuel bills, still feels the same to me, but over time I'm hoping the additional 10" on insluation will help in the long run.
Description of Work: Attic and ventilation duct insulation for a 1980 home. Purchased Angie's List Deal, initially just wanted a section of my attic to be insulated with additional cellulose but was told there was an error or ambiguity in the wording of the deal that only applied to the whole attic not a specific insulation job or a section. But had them quote me a price for the whole attic as my insulation was at minimal at best. They also quoted me a price for insulating my solatubes and my bathroom fan ducts that were poorly installed by the builder. Had approx. 1100sq ft of 10" cellulose blown in to achieve a R-49 rating.
