Paul and his assistance did a very thorough job with the assessment, explaining in detail the work they were doing, showing me the cold spots where I was losing heat. Moreover, they did a thorough analysis of the attic and identified issues that need to be fixed to enhance the energy efficiency of my home. Paul provided a detailed write up with pricing and work necessary. I have since hired him and his company to clean my attic and re-insulate my attic.
Description of Work: Complete home energy assessment, temperature reading, heat loss assessment, crawl space and insulation assessment.

Paul came on a weekday afternoon to do the initial energy audit. The main reason for me being interested in this is that for a very little house (800 sq ft), my electric bills are very high. At least that's whas Seattle City Light keeps telling me in mailings comparing my usage to my neighbors'. They probably have non-electric heat, which I do not, but what the heck. Paying $400 bills in the winter is getting old, and I knew my house, built in 1954, had no insulation in the walls. I was very impressed with Paul, his communication skils, knowledge and professionalism. He explained everything and took pictures with his iPad in the attic and crawl space. I'm arthritic and can't get into those spaces myself. I was already sold on Air-Krete insulation for the walls after having researched it and the estimate he gave for that, plus adding blow-in green fiber cellulose to the existing attic batts (not up preferred R-value) was very doable. He provided me with a very complete list of all things that would be done, going over each item thoroughly. Paul is probably the best marketing tool this company has. He does a great job! Scheduling the day for the work was handled very well through Jennifer and she was responsive to my timing needs and provided great follow-up. Juan arrived on time on the appointed Friday and immediately set to work pulling strips of vinyl siding and drilling holes. He was friendly and sang as he worked, and promised to be careful with the 13-year old siding. I was nervous about that, and was very pleased after all work was done that no siding was damaged. Yay! Big relief! In the afternoon two other guys arrived to do the attic and crawl space work and insulation, and then they helped Juan with pumping in the Air-Krete into the walls, plugging the holes and replacing the siding. It was a long day for Juan, getting here at 10am and not leaving until after 6pm. All the crew worked steadily and efficiently. There was one little wall in the washer/dryer cubby hole in the garage that I had discussed with Paul during the estimate phase. Homeowner is to move everything away from the walls before the crew arrives, and I knew I couldn't move the stacked full-size washer and dryer and we'd decided to skip adding insulation to the one little wall there that backs the pantry, which is kept closed all of the time. I was extra pleased to see that the crew managed to move the washer/dryer a few inches so that they could install the wall insulation there, too. Nice! I'm sure they were eager to end their long day, which was evidenced by a less-than-stellar clean up, and by having forgotten to put the washer/dryer back to its original spot. It's usable, and eventually my handyman boyfriend will remedy that. I'm going to have to ask him to clean the Air-Krete splatters and streaks off the siding, too. Maybe it's not realistic to see/rinse it all while it's still wet? Not sure. I know they did use the hoses to do some clean up, because they left the water turned at at both faucets. And one of their hammers in the garage. :) I'm also going to have my handyman boyfriend check out the crawl space and attic soon, just to double-check that everything was done. Overall I'm impressed with this company, but because of the little things I've mentioned, I want to make sure. So I'm reserving judgement on the quality rating for that reason. Because I did like my experience with this company and wish I could give them solid As everywhere, I'm going to offer my suggestions to earn an A in professionalism: 1) When crew foreman arrives, spend five minutes with the client going over the work order, making sure everyone is on the same page about what is going to be done. I noticed that Juan's list was condensed and summarized, instead of the detailed one Paul had left me when estimating, and I needed to remind Juan at the end of the day about one hole that needed expansion foam. Also check in with customer once or twice during the day for a quick progress report. 2) Advise customers that drilling and foam expansion can cause things like expensive paintings to fall off the wall. I should have thought of that myself, but didn't. People who do this work everyday should, in my opinion, be more aware of these possibilities and go the extra step to warn customers. The day after the install, my favorite piece of art dropped to the floor, breaking the frame, and I'll have to have handyman boyfriend repair that too. I recall my favorite plumber who was here last fall to fix clogged pipes. He had to do some wall cutting and before he started he not only warned me about noise that might disturb my dog, but also advised me to removed my grandmother's things from the shelf on the wall he'd be working on, just in case. That kind of consideration and thoughtfulness goes a VERY long way with most customers. 3) Even if it adds to the cost, or perhaps offer as an option, take post-work photos similar to the ones Paul did during the audit to show that work has been completed as promised. Not every customer is capable of checking the work personally. Do a walk-around with customer for the areas they can get to. Just a tip on good customer service. I did go ahead and write the check for the balance, and am pretty confident we'll find all work to be up to snuff or that the company will take care of anything that might not be, but having proof in hand before the crew leaves is a much more professional way to do business. 4) Don't skimp on clean up. I'm accustomed to the aforementioned plumber and my handyman boyfriend who tend to leave places cleaner than they found them. I don't expect that, but I do expect things not to be considerably worse, either. On the whole, I recommend this company. We've had some chilly spring weather and I believe I've noticed that the heaters aren't working as hard as they used to and the heat seems to stay inside much longer. The Air-Krete is definitely a good sound-proofing agent, too. It's noticeably quieter in here. I'm glad I had the work done and feel much better for it, even if I don't end up living here long enough to recoup the cost in lower electric bills. I'm almost looking forward to winter, to see how much cozier my space is. But wait, first there's summer in Seattle, and I don't want to rush that. Thanks again for not damaging any siding, for having friendly crew and staff, and providing quality at a great price. *** Adding comments and an A for quality 10/17/13 I've had occasion to have someone check out the work in the attic and crawl space, since I cannot get into those spaces myself. The work received kudos from the people checking them out. Now that the weather is getting cooler, I already notice a big difference in the house staying warm through the night. I'm confident I made the right choice to use this company, and choosing the AirKrete wall insulation. My house is quieter and warmer by far. I expect to see less hefty heating bills this winter. Hurrah!

Paul has done a great job performing the energy audit. During the whole process, he nicely explain what tests he is performing, what kind of issues he is checking and give me lots of tips (such as simple caulking, etc) to address some of the issues he has found. At the end, he gave me a detail reports for all his founding and also give me quotes on some of the works they can do to improve the insulation in my house. Their quote is very competitive and I do plan to hire them to do the insulation works they suggested later this year.

I've wanted to have an energy audit done for years, and I'm so glad we finally did it. We had new thermal windows put in several years ago when the house was rented during my job transfer out of state. When we returned, I could feel drafts coming through the windows on windy days, uneven heating and cooling, frequent cycling of the furnace, and higher than expected utility bills. I've always been suspicious about the quality, or even presence, of insulation in the walls and ceiling because the house was built in 1967. We had an evaluation from a local insulation company and were informed that there was some insulation in the walls and that the attic space was up to code, but things didn't seem right, and I remained suspicious. In fact, the representative of the local insulation company only poked his head through the opening of the attic, unlike Paul who donned a suit and mask and spent about 15 minutes up there actually looking. This energy audit revealed leaking around the frames of every single window, the absence of wall insulation in the lower half of the south wall, some gaps where the walls and ceilings adjoined (which is allowing cold air to enter the living space through a dropped ceiling in a lower lever hallway), gaps in the attic insulation, and covered rafter vents which has allowed moisture to accumulate as seen in some rusty roof nails (no mold, though!). Our stove vent is not insulated where it passes through the attic and the plumbing vents end in the attic rather than being ducted out through the roof. Paul showed me the photos he took and later sent them by email for download. On a positive note, the chimney flue is in good shape. The experience, overall, was fantastic! I learned what simple actions could be taken by the DIY homeowner, which actions needed a little more work (either by DIY or professional) and which things might not be cost effective unless incorporated with a planned renovation such as re-siding the house. Paul filled out a report which he left for us. He had a wonderfully calm demeanor, and his explanations were thorough. Paul mentioned several times: "start with the low hanging fruit first" when it comes to rectifying the air leaks and energy gaps. We will do that, and should we need to reach a little higher, we will certainly use this company again!
Description of Work: We purchased a Big Deal coupon through Angie's List for a home energy audit from Crawl Space Cleaning Pros. The technician, Paul Reinking, set up an exhaust fan in the front door and, using a non-toxic smoke stick, checked to see if drafts occurred in common areas such as widows, doors, light fixtures, utility connections, etc. We went room by room where he used an infrared camera to determine which areas of the ceiling and walls were colder than the surrounding areas, indicating leaks or absence of insulation. Paul finished by going up into the attic crawl space to look at quality of insulation, airflow, and presence of moisture.

Description of Work: The company had a different name when I used them. The name and address was: Sustainable Building & Insulation, 10721 'A' Street South, Unit D, Tacoma, WA 98444. Two men completed a thorough evaluation of my home including cold spots, insulation in the attic and crawl space. I received a very detailed report with pictures and specific prices for the services they'd perform. They were polite, one time and respectful. They followed up in a timely manner with a report and a week later, an e-mail. Working with them was easy.

Description of Work: During remodeling of our livingroom and kitchen, our contractor suggested we have the crawl space under the livingroom and kitchen insulated for warmth. Also, it was noticed that the original construction workers back in 1974 had left cigarette butts, beer cans and other garbage in the crawl space. We needed to have all the garbage removed. .

I worked with the owner; his name is Richard Harron. He was very flexible and they did a good job. They went beyond the norms; they did not just blow in insulation they sealed all around my lights with metal dams so the insulation would get on them, even though the insulation can. They did go above the mark. They put in insulation around the lights themselves so that cold air would not go up. They did just extra stuff. Then I had rodents and they figured out with that and I think they solved that for me. They definitely helped. They were very competitive. They figured out ways to do a good job and be competitive, and take advantage of any energy discounts or rebates. They examined all of that stuff. I could not use all of them, but they looked at every possibility for that for discounts. I had some extra screening work done for rodents and stuff like that and the price they charged for that was really competitive and the work they did was above and beyond what any other company I have used even came close to. Like any business, consider what they have to say and make your own evaluation, is what I would say to anybody, but personally I was happy with them. I had a big rodent problem and if you live in the woods you cannot say everything is installed, but they probably did more to abate that problem than anybody else that has come in here in 10 years. They put effort into it and I am not catching rodents or seeing evidence now since they came through here. They knew what they were doing, and they looked in places no body else would ever look. They just did things no body else has even talked about. All those other companies just put traps around and take money, but these guys actually crawled through every space and sealed stuff up and showed me where I could access trap holes to check and stuff like that. They were professional. I would like to give them an "A," as that is tough stuff and they came in here and they did it, and they did screw around.

Showed up and explained what he was going to do. Then proceeded to seal up the doorway and hook up the blower so the house was pressurized. When through the whole house with me using his thermal gun to point out where we might be losing heat (wall corners etc) and a smoke pencil to show where we had air leakage. Wrote up recommendations as to how we could reduce our losses and went over that with me as well. Very professional, friendly and informative.

I was very pleased with the energy audit; it started on time and took almost 3 hours to complete. Paul was very knowledgeable and came fully equipped. He was also happy to have me shadow him as he performed the audit and to answer all the questions I had regarding what he was doing. When the audit was done, Paul gave me a list of everything he found and a list of what he recommended we do to improve the energy efficiency of our house. A few days after the audit, Paul emailed us with the photos he took in our attic and crawl space, and a quotation to correct the deficiencies he discovered.
Description of Work: I watched Paul Reinking perform a blower-door test which checked our house for air leaks, and an infrared scan of our complete house. He showed me where we are losing heat and we discussed how these areas could be mitigated. The infrared scan also indicated where wall and ceiling insulation needed to be improved. Paul also checked the condition of our attic and crawl-space insulation, air vents, ducts, and for signs of rodents. He took many photos which he shared with me before he left.

Wow, what an eye-opener! I had no idea that our house was about as well-sealed as an outhouse in the deep woods. The tech went over every inch of the place with a thermo-imager and found many, many places where heat was escaping. He made sensible suggestions of what to fix (recaulking windows and baseboards) and what improvements weren't cost-effective (adding another inch or two to our attic insulation). We could have thrown buckets of money at all the wrong places, trying to make our home more energy efficient. I'm so glad to have their report in hand so we know what exactly we should do. The tech, with his thermo equipment, was also able to detect sloppy workmanship in many areas of our home that aren't visible. I will never buy another home again without having these folks out to inspect it first. It will be great information to have.

I recently bought a house and wanted an energy audit to use in planning repairs (now) and future remodeling projects. I set up a time to meet the auditor at the house, which I have not yet moved into. He was late but phoned to let me know. The audit was thorough, and included a blower door test and infrared check of heat losses through all walls and ceilings, with a written report of the findings. While I am satisfied, and would use this company again if the occasion arises, I think the service could be improved by 1) an infrared meter that saves a copy of the image for future reference, e.g. to tell future repair persons where the worst air leaks are so they can be repaired and 2) computer generated report rather than handwritten.

The energy audit was eye opening. I did it after I bought a new (30 year old) house. I wish I had done it earlier to that I could have lined up more work prior to move-in. Paul was very patient as he walked through all of his tests. It clearly showed me where I need to put effort to seal air leaks, add insulation, and replace vent fans. As a result of the audit I was provided with an estimate for adding insulation to three areas. I had ductwork from my furnace going through the garage. Their were vents in the ducting for when the garage was a workshop and the ducting was not insulated. I sealed up the ducts and insulated all the ducting. The team was there fore a full day....they showed up on time and did a great job. The one constructive comment I have is that I probably would have put down some tarps or removed more items from the garage. They were careful but it's a messy process. They did their best to clean up but I probably should have prepared better.
