Description of Work: John initially repaired my chimney, but when it continued to leak, he delved deeper and found that the previous owners had used the wrong kind of bricks(they used indoor, quite porous bricks, which they used to encase the original chimney), we decided it was best to remove the chimney all together as it was no longer truly needed (traditional wood-burning fireplace had been convereted to gas), and it was impossible to keep it from leaking due to the wrong bricks being used. So, he removed the chimney and only charged me for materials for doing that. He could have charged me for the labor involved in the second procedure (removal of the chimney), since it was not his fault that the wrong brick had been used, but he did not. He also cleaned my gutters and applied moss killer to my roof. He is a very kind and professional man, as is his assistant. I am very please with the work performed and would not hesitate to use his services again or recommend them to others.

+ 2 moreHe replaced the shingle, cleaned the gutters and plugged downspouts and while inspecting the roof, which was fine, noticed damage and deterioration of the chimney and its cap. He repointed and repaired the brickwork in my chimney and replaced the cap after attempting to mend the old one failed. He even took the time to patch a leaking spot in my foundation. I really appreciated his expertise, thoroughness, professionalism and kindness. He went above and beyond what I had previously experienced at a very reasonable price.

+ -1 moreWith the nice weather on Saturday, 10/4/14, John came on his day off to repair the chimney and wall. As always, he was personable, professional, punctual and conscientious. He showed me all the parts and materials he was using for my project, discussed the procedure and asked if I had any questions or concerns before he started. He took pictures of the before and after work on the chimney for my review from the safety of ground level. It was a wonderful job and I feel safer without the worry of winter winds knocking my chimney down. John also did much more than I expected with the basement wall. It was well beyond just the cost of materials he charged me. I also appreciate that he made sure the products he used to repair and seal the cracked mortar was paintable.
Description of Work: While cleaning my gutters and treating my roof for moss on 9/21/14, (at a very reasonable price and not charging for a cleaning I did not need), John McDonald noticed the terrible condition of my chimney. The brick work was crumbling, the flue had a hole in it and the cap needed replacing. Since he does masonry work. I asked for an estimate and had him check the chimney in the basement and another masonry concern about slight water leakage in a outside wall down there too. After checking the basement concerns, John gave me an estimate of $350 to repair and seal the chimney and replace the damaged flue and cap on the roof. He did not notice any water damage from the chimney in the basement and that it didn't need work at this time. The mortar and slight water leakage in the basement wall did warrant attention but he thought the gutter cleaning should also help so he estimated $25 for mortar repair and sealant materials until more was known after the rainy season.
