Description of Work: I called Skip's Awnings in September for an estimate to install quality railings on my front steps. They arrived promptly and discussed the issues involved. A couple of days later I called them was a change to the original job and they agreed, saying it would be two or three weeks before they could do it. It took several calls and a couple of quick drop-by visits before they actually did the installation. The two or three weeks turned into nine weeks before I had my railings. | |They did a quality job and used excellent products. I'm very happy with the appearance and sturdiness of the railing. However, they do need to be more prompt in meeting their self-imposed schedule or should attempt to keep the customer better informed when they can't make and agreed-on time frame. I plan to use them in the future based on the results of this job, but I now now to expect a variable time-frame on their schedules.

We didn't get started very well. I was working with the contractor who did the walls and he was going to oversee having the railings done also. The idea was that the wall contractor would pay close attention to what was required for the railings since he was responsible for them and being paid an administrative fee. For the most part, he did a good job on the walls, but seemed to flounder around in making arrangements for the railings. Since he still didn't have arrangements made for the railings when the walls were done I took that responsibility away from him and proceeded on my own. I had the owner of Skips, Rick Jenkins come out and go over the whole project and quote it. I also had another contractor who was recommended come out. He turned out to be overbooked and eventually declined to quote. I contacted a neighbor who had Skips do his railings. He gave them a good recommendation. Based on the good recommendation and what seemed to be reasonable pricing I went ahead with Skips. The railings are attached to the top caps of the walls. The top caps are glued to the blocks below them. The glue job is very critical! A few days after the walls had been completed and the glue had a chance to set up I checked and found about a third of the caps were not glued down. I contacted the wall contractor and he came out and redid the glue job. Just in case, I bought a tube of the glue and had it available to Skips if they encountered a loose cap. Sure enough, they found one loose cap and glued down so there was no delay in doing the railings.
Description of Work: Skips Awnings put powder coated aluminum railings on the tops of two new landscape block walls and on both sides of an existing 13 foot concrete stairway. One of the walls was curved and stepped which required considerable ingenuity. On top of that they incorporated a gate into the railing. Rick Jenkins had some good ideas on how put the railings on the stairs and get maximum utilization of the stair width. This required some concrete work on my part which I was happy to do. He had a way of getting the width I wanted without the concrete work, but I felt it would be a nicer looking installation with the concrete work so went that way.

We called Skip's twice to install an awning. The first time, they said they needed to check their calendar to schedule installation of one awning and give us an estimate to repair or replace our other awning. They didn't call us back. The second time we called, same response from another representative of the company. No call backagain! I'm looking into other companies.
Description of Work: We called Skip's to install an awning that we already own and give us an estimate to repair or replace a second awning that is in disrepair on our house. They answered the phone... that was the only service we could get out of them.

Response from Skips Awnings
We removed an old awning for her back in 2008. We never put up another one. No one hear recalls speaking to a Member. I do not know where she bought the awning from, but we do not install or repair other companies awnings. Maybe she called one of the other awning companies here in town.

The railings Skip's installed four years ago have all lasted well. They use powder coated aluminum, which is a good value. They can do a lot of custom work with it. That why I used them, and because I have noticed that the "subs" my builder uses (Ted Miller) have generally been very good for price, follow-up and quality. By this I assume the price was good, don't really know. I do know the materials are better than the ones at the Big-box stores. On the other hand they are not especially organized. During the housing boom, I twice tried to get them to bid this. So with the recession, and all other backyard projects completed, I went after that gate again. Its a small job, but it needs 2 guys - so I understand its often hard to get these things done. I had looked at an iron gate, big bucks. This time I got a bid, and on it was on time, and they had a good suggestion and spent quite a while going over options. Getting them to complete it took some time, and many times they didn't show when expected. I called to office and they seemed to not have the information centralized. After that first call, everyone knew who I was and what the job was. I work from home, so it's no big deal. 2 years earlier this would have been unacceptable, I would have called it off or took a pill or something. It turned out they didn't know they were out of stock on the right metal. Apparently materials are tight, to make it harder on them. When the arrived they forgot a part and had to come back yet one more time. BUT, it came out looking pretty good. Better than I expected. It looks strong too. Clean-up wasn't perfect, but good enough. No plants damaged or other problems. Once again, they spent quite a while discussing the issue of which way the hinges go. I think he (Dave) knew I had something wrong with my plan and was being polite. That turned out to be important, I could have made a big mistake with the way the gate opened. So I have to say the service itself was very good - they definitely wanted to satisfy me. I have a sturdy little two leafed gate, a pretty good looking gate, that is a custom solution to a problem that cost less than half or a third of what wrought iron would cost. But if I was planning a wedding, We'd give them a long lead time.
Description of Work: A large stairway to the basement needed a safety gate. We added a railing to the other side. The first railing, as are all my railings, were installed by Skip's in 2006.
