Technically, these guys were pretty good. Our client wanted programmable scenes and moods, which required a complicated installation of high-tech wiring and switching. Honestly, I had no real complaints with the quality of most of their work. The first problem was that Erwin did not supply standard insurance paperwork that we require of all subcontractors. We requested it well before they began work, and informed them that payment would be withheld until we received the paperwork. Two months later, we had not received the insurance documentation, and the owner called about their invoice. Things got ugly. Long story short, the owner called me a liar, and told me that he "knew" that the insurance was just an excuse not to pay them. That's BS, as we pay quicker than almost any other contractor - as long as our subs have their paperwork in order. I let the owner, John, know that I did not appreciate his accusations, and re-stated our requirements that he have his insurance company provide an insurance certificate. John eventually made the two minute call to his insurance agent, got the required forms to us, and we paid that day. But from that point on, we were treated like deadbeats and a nuisance. Erwin scheduled electricians and then cancelled them at the last moment. They had two days of rough-in work for two people, and only scheduled one, then pulled off to serve another client. They showed up to work, then left after two hours to "get materials", and wouldn't return for days. Erwin always had some excuse for what ended up being over two weeks of delays, but it was clear that we were being punished for the earlier disagreement. I don't know if I was more unhappy with Erwin Electric's unprofessional conduct, or the knowledge that it would have been SO easy for them to just take care of business from the beginning and avoid any unpleasantness. I recommend that clients stay away from this contractor. You may find yourself in a real life "Jekyll and Hyde" situation. Buyer beware!
