EARTHWISE EXCAVATION

Septic Systems, Excavating, Drain Pipe Installation,

About us

Since its inception in 1987, Earthwise Excavation has built a reputation for service, innovation, and workmanship. We also strive to follow the path of an evolutionary corporation with sustainable business practices, employee ownership, community and philanthropic involvement. Customarily business and corporate ideologies have viewed environmentalism as a threat to the bottom line. We regard the sustainability imperative as an opportunity to gain competitive advantage, reduce costs, increase employee and customer loyalty, and stimulate greater innovation while improving the health of both the planet and people. For your information we have listed some of the steps we have taken in our path towards carbon neutrality. BIODIESEL Bio-diesel is a domestically produced alternative fuel that can be made from any fat or vegetable oil. Biodiesel can be used in any diesel engine with few if any modifications and has achieved a full national standard. (ASTM D6751) 100% Biodiesel reduces Hydrocarbon output by 67%, Carbon Monoxide by 48%, and particulate matter by 47%. When you combine these emission benefits with 100% reductions in other air toxins and potential cancer causing compounds, biodiesel is a very positive step. Currently in Washington State there are few retail outlets with B100's average cost at $3.50 gallon. 100% Biodiesel does at this time have a higher gel factor, meaning that temperatures below freezing will thicken the fuel possibly causing fuel filter problems. We use a anti gel additives during winter months (Dec-Feb). Supporting cleaner air, your health, our farmers, and sustainability. BIOLUBRICANTS Earthwise Excavation is once again leading the industry in implementing agriculture based products that are less toxic, bio-degradable, and out perform comparable petroleum based products. Beginning in 2003, we switched to Food grade grease for daily equipment lubrication. We also began switching over to a canola based biodegradable hydraulic fluid. This was done at scheduled oil change intervals based on maintenance manuals. (Approx. every 2000 hr.) As of Nov 2004, 94% of our fleet has been upgraded to biodegradable hydraulic fluids, with 100% expected spring 2005. GREEN POWER Green power generally refers to electricity supplied in whole or part from renewable resources, such as wind and solar, geothermal, various forms of biomass, and landfill gas. By choosing to purchase a green power product, support is given to increased development of renewable energy sources, which can reduce the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, natural gas, and oil. Greater reliance on renewable energy sources also provides economic benefits and can improve our national security. (over) FSC Certification We use Forest Stewardship Certified wood which comes from sustainabily harvested forests. The forest and harvesting operations are independently certified through the FSC. The availability is still scarce meaning approximate 30% increase in costs. As demand increases so will availability lowering costs by 15%. This step protects forests and watersheds with increased buffer zones and decreased harvesting rates. NIMH POWER The Nimh batteries are designed for effective recycling and provide longer charge/ recharge cycles. They do not contain mercury, cadmium, lead, sulfuric acid or arsenic, all highly toxic materials. The initial cost of purchase is substantially higher but with over 100 plus charge cycles the savings are substantial. Let alone the savings in environmental degradation. MINUMUM 9% NET TO CONSERVATION A minimum of nine percent of our net profit is directed towards Northwest area conservation programs. The Northwest Ecosystem Alliance, the Cascadia Forest Alliance, the Surfrider Foundation, the Friends of the Trees along with sponsorship of yearly conservation messages broadcast during drive times on business radio 770 KNWX are some of directions that we have routed these funds. Conservation and the wisdom of erring on the side of caution serve as a backbone for our philanthropic direction. Permaculture land design, Workplace recycle programs, Oil water separators, Oil spill kits, Stop work oil leak programs, Repair and rebuild preferences, Materials sourcing programs, lessening toxins and increasing recycled materials, are some of our other programs. At Earthwise Excavation we are committed to doing business in a different way. We have provided superior excavation services to the Puget Sound region while at the same time promoted social and environmental causes. We feel strongly that businesses must take the lead by "inventing a future" that gives our children a chance to enjoy a healthy environment. Our activism around this philosophy has taken many forms including campaigns to reduce global warming, promote conservation and support organic farming. All these efforts hav

Albert and I immediately hit it off as we started discussing permaculture and other natural gardening and food cultivation topics (swales, food forests, hugelkultur). He is extremely knowledgeable about not only septic systems in general, but also about how it might affect the surroundings, placement of future fruit trees and gardens, etc. He suggested a genius idea about something unrelated to the septic that had my wife and I scratching our heads with, 'why didn't we think of that?' Steve the foreman and crew came out on the scheduled day and immediately began the excavation work. He and the other operator were *arteeeests*. Amazing control of that heavy machinery. Everything went very smoothly and all the while they were very open about any questions I had and about the process, maintenance steps, etc. Albert did upsell the final soil type but he only suggested it after I expressed interest in planting fruit trees in between the drainfield pipes (apparently this is fine to do with LPD systems) and was very upfront on what that would do to the final price. I found Albert and Earthwise Excavation to be very reasonable, upfront, and professional throughout the entire process. I have no qualms about recommending them, and am actually speaking with them now about some unrelated excavation/permaculture work. I also can't imagine them giving anyone anything other than an A+ experience. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Our 1959 house was on the original gravity septic system and failed a couple of years after we moved in. Time for a new septic system. This is a very busy time for all the septic and excavation guys so it was difficult trying to get companies to even come out and do a consult. I did finally get a provider to come out and on his recommendation, we hired a septic designer to come and design a new septic system. After getting the final permitted design back, we called a handful of companies to get some quotes. Earthwise came back with a reasonable quote and after several calls, we scheduled a date for them to come out. The old septic tank was pumped out, demolished, and buried, new septic and pump tanks were brought in and installed, a new drainfield was excavated and LPD system with pump was installed per the designer's specifications. After final county and designer approval, topsoil was brought in and everything was leveled.

Steve, the foreman, and Victor, his assistant were great, very professional and hard working and they paid a lot of attention to fine details. We have worked with Earthwise before and had no doubt that they would be the crew we would ask to do the finish work after our yard settled from the construction. They recontoured the yard and it looks GREAT!!!! The grass seed is sprouting and the yard looks even better than it did before we did the construction.
Description of Work: Removed rocks that rolled into the the yard as a result of the excavation of our house foundation. They also graded the yard, put down topsoil on the yard and seeded it.

Albert knew a lot about our very complex septic system, and was able to offer suggested design alternatives that the prior installer (and the design engineer) hadn't known about. The two employees were very courteous and professional and did a good job. Albert was a little slow to return phone calls and stay in communication, but the work happened as scheduled and turned out well.
Description of Work: We had a problem with our septic installation from another contractor, and chose to hire someone new to come out to fix it. Albert came out to consult on the repair, and then sent a crew of two back to install a vent and below-ground void space for our septic tank, and also drop the air compressor blower unit below ground.

Project went well, we were pleased with the work. But we were surprised by the final bill. We had agreed upon a lot of job change requests, but we (and Albert) had glossed over the estimated cost of those items, and they were more than we were expecting, and we probably would not have added them if we understood the full cost. We should know to put all change orders in writing, to be sure everyone is on the same page with the add'l cost, and we'll manage that more carefully in the future. We were going to ask for a discount, until a few days later a break was discovered in our septic line. We had originally instructed the crew to dig near where we knew the tite line was located, and they did hit it and repair it then, but none of us were aware of a 2nd break in the line, which manifested days later. The repair for that was about 2 man days of work and an extra trip with a mini-excavator, and they did not charge us for this, and handle it with a calm, can-do attitude on a couple of late evenings after their regular workdays. So, we ended up figuring we were even and paid the bill. We would definitely manage and supervise more carefully in the future, but they did do good work and we'd hire them again.
Description of Work: Cleaned out drainage ditch & graded spoils, graded farm road, trucked in & spread gravel, removed trees, smoothed hillside, installed French drain, processed wood from fallen barn. Four day project w/ two machines, plus a laborer.

Non responsive, non punctual, non professional., over budget. The county health department put him on probation as a result of his botched work. And he blamed others for this (general contractor, engineers, designer, etc). Come to find out that this person has been involved in numerous law suits in the last decade. Steer clear.

Response from EARTHWISE EXCAVATION
This job has not been paid for and property liens have been filed. The numerous lawsuits that we are involved in are sadly due to non payment of services. The probational action that the King County Health Department took was in regards to moving tank locations without proper authorization. Both the homeowner and designer were involved in the decision to move tanks to a better location. Proper paperwork procedures were not followed in that decision making process. King County Health Department agrees that the changes were made to to better the system. The probation was in regards to not following proper procedures. Questions regrading this probation, please address to Mark Allen, SKCHD, 206-296-4932. Additional site work involving a days rockery work, as directed by the onsite foreman, turned out to be not aesthetically pleasing to the homeowner. This resulted in another days work to correct. Neither of which has been paid for, or even the materials cost of importing the 4 loads of 2 man rockery rock. We refused to complete the final inspection of the septic system till we recieved payment. Homeowner hired another liscensed contractor to perform inspection and backfill. As of 21 September 2010, we still have not been paid for our services to the tune of $15,527.63. October 2009 was our last time onsite.

Two guys came out to do the work and I was amazed how quickly it went. They finished the work in a day and I liked that. They use biodiesel in their tractors which was one of the reasons I picked them. We ended up paying more than we expected.
Description of Work: I used Earthwise Excavation 2.5 years ago to dig for the foundation.

Description of Work: HAD THE SEPTIC TANK HOLE DUG UP AND THEN PUMPED OUT. BROUGHT THE HOSES ALL THE WAY AROUND THE HOUSE.
