The house project was a disaster. Paul made three major design errors that cost us an obscene amount of money. Expensive design elements that no one will ever see, a completely unnecessary layer of outside insulation in addition to the substantial interior insulation, and a chimney design that defies physics and common sense.
Description of Work: Paid to design a custom home.

As smoothly as building a house can go.
Description of Work: Paul and his staff are fantastic. We definitely have the house of our dreams. Paul is calm, creative and a just plain, all around good guy. Designing a house is a stressful process, and we hired the perfect firm to walk us through the ups and downs.

We researched multiple architects and talked with 3 in depth, and by far Paul Whitney was the most impressive. He did a great job talking to us, understanding our needs, and providing lots of detailed, high quality information about his services. Of all the architects we talked to, he was easily the most prepared, professional, and just plain nice to talk to. From all the research we did we were expecting Paul to be the most expensive, especially after meeting with him. However, when we got his estimate via e-mail, we were surprised that he was actually the *least* expensive. We ultimately decided to move to another house instead of do the remodel, but had we chosen to remodel, we would have hired Paul in an instant. If you are researching architects, you should absolutely talk to Paul.
Description of Work: We were considering a major remodel to our current home (new addition plus a major reworking of the existing area). Paul met with us to understand what we were trying to do and provide us with an estimate of how much his services would cost.

Paul met with us at no charge two times to discuss our remodel project. His bid was significantly lower than others we got. He was a very good listener and thoughtful. He tailored his presentation to our needs. Although we ended up selecting a different firm (based on style), Paul was a very close second choice and I think working with him wouldv'e given us a great house. All his references I spoke to loved him as did several builders. Definitely check him our if you are looking for an architect.
Description of Work: Informational meetings for remodel project, free proposal estimate, home visit.

Paul is a great architect and very easy to work with. He is very friendly and worked with us to achieve what we wanted. Our contractor had never worked with Paul before but hopes to work with him again because he provided just the right amount of detail in his plans and was easy to get along with. He was genuinely interested in our project, but he didn't "take over," as we've been told that some architects do. His price was reasonable (higher than some "design-build" architects), but lower than many other architects; he was definitely worth the extra cost.
Description of Work: Paul helped finalize our design and created plans for 2nd story addition with 1st floor modifications and new porch.
