We went with them on the recommendation of a friend who used them a couple years ago. Overall, we are happy with the work that was done and the floors came out beautifully. Our only hesitation came in making the final payment. We knew that they required the payment at the time they finished the job, even though we wouldn't really be able to assess the floors for a couple of days. We were fine with that. However, the 2 man team received their payment, left to go return equipment and then returend to say there weren't going to complete the job that day. We were sincerely worried that they were not going to return to complete the work. We felt that if they weren't going to complete the job that day, they should have returned our payment until they completed the job. The team also assured us multiple times that they would clean up after sanding the floors but everything was left with a layer of dust.
Description of Work: They refinished the floors in our living room, dining room, hall, and three bedrooms.

Work was done on time and within budget. Refinished floors were better than expected. Hardwood Guys were great to work with. Only surprise was the that full payment was required at completion of work. This does not provide customer time to inspect work as we could not walk on the floors for 3-5 days after completion (drying time).

This company is extremely unprofessional and difficult to work with. Bid was good, we should have seen that as a red-flag, in that you get what you pay for. But in this case we felt we were ripped off even with the amount we paid. We hired them after our neighbors had a pretty good experience a year earlier and were happy with their flooring install and finishing. What went wrong? The guys failed to do important (and simple) prep work on our stair install that prevented them from doing a correct job installing floors on the stair case. Resulting in a staircase which was NO LONGER IN CODE with poor measuring, and installation. We also had many issues with poor workmanship all over the house - sanding swirls are everywhere, especially in darker areas where we felt they thought they could and quot;cheatand quot; a little. They didn't finish the threshold by the backdoor (which they said it would be no problem, even in the bidding process we asked them to add it on the bid and they seemed to have forgotten about). A few areas that were left unfinished, a lot of stain splatter on the walls and areas well above the baseboard area, on the inside of the front door. Nail heads were exposed and coming up through the floors in several areas less than 2 weeks after install (they were covered with a soft putty like substance and never hardened) Carpet and underfloor carpet bull-nose removal was sloppy (they used only a circular saw) and resulted in them cutting into the wall in our dining room. Finish was splotchy and rough. A part of the stair well was missing floor installation which they thought was and quot;acceptableand quot;, which it wasn't. Jennifer left us very insulting and rude emails in response to our request a meeting so we could show them our issues. Only after we shared several images of the stairwell with out-of-code installation. (Every bullnose overhang on each step was a different length, some were 1/4and quot; some were 1.5and quot;, backboards were crooked from left to right and we saw how easy that could have been prevented once we removed the floor - all very obvious.) She insisted that every issue was a result of prepwork that was to be our responsibility, even items like shimming and measuring during floor installation, and that we had paid them nearly 1000.00 to remove carpet and prep for flooring. They didn't mention ANY of this in person when they met with us, nor did they say anything as they started the work. They asked us to be out of the house completely during the time they installed and finished - so in reality that prep work could never have been done by us. That's why we hired what we thought to be professionals. In the end, when trying to negotiate with this company to resolve the issues so we could move back into our house they finally worked with us after 2 months of going back and forth (and causing us to move back out and find a place for our family to stay while they worked again, a job that should have been done right from the beginning). We had to tear out the bad installed floors on the stair case and my husband laid new flooring on the stairs himself that are IN CODE - new flooring and equipment rental cost us another 1000.00. They came back and refinished the stairway, fixed two of the issues we had in each door entryway which we thought were subject to failure the quickest not having any finish on them, and laid another coat of finish and quot;as a favorand quot; to us... which, by the way, we couldn't say for sure but our floors were very rough and we were certain they went cheap on finishing and laid only one coat of finish. They feel much more like they should have after the final coat of finish. Aside from the stairs we felt there were an excessive amount of issues that required extensive amount of time on our part to fix, such as repaint the walls splattered in stain, remove stain from the french doors and laundry room areas, all thresholds were also splattered with stain, etc. We were never reimbursed for any of the work, nor did the company pay for any of the fixing, even down to the can of stain. Even after we bought the new flooring since they refused, and they requested the old flooring BACK in return - all extremely unprofessional and with the multiple RUDE emails from Jennifer (not seeing the flooring herself) attacking us, I'm surprised this place is still in business and truthfully I'm a little shocked we have floors that are ok now (thanks to my husband for doing the job himself)
Description of Work: We hired the hardwood guys to remove carpeting in the dining room, office, and stairwell. They were to prep the stairwell and lay hardwoods in those areas and refinish the new and existing hardwood floors in our home.

Response from THE HARDWOOD GUYS LLC
First, the contract clearly outlines in detail what our company is responsible for and what our company is not responsible for. Preparing the staircase for tread and riser installation was the responsibility of the customer, and he chose not to properly prepare the staircase so our company worked around the skirts and existing structure, to produce the best results possible. Customer was unhappy with the end results because his existing staircase structure was not square or straight, and having left the skirts in place - resulted in less than perfect results. The "back and forth" was our explaining the contract to the customer, including the condition of the existing structure and surface provided for us to work on, (which he already signed before we began the project - indicating he had read it). Regardless, our company did accept his proposal, returned to re-sand/ stain/ finish his newly installed treads and risers (even though he still did not properly prepare the steps for the sanding and staining), AND applied an additional coat of Swedish finish over the entire floor. We first received the customer's complaint July 3rd, and arranged a visit to his home for on site inspection and discussion within the week. We immediately offered to re-install the entire stair case treads and risers - IF he would simply prepare the staircase according to our contract and code. He declined, so negotiations and discussions followed about what would be fair and how he wanted to proceed. We accepted his proposal by July 26th. Obviously this timeline is very different from what the customer outlined in this review. As far as our returning to do the additional work we agreed to do, we accommodated their schedule, and allowed the customer to pick the time most convenient for him - which was the end of August as they were going to be out of town. We actually had great communications with them throughout the entire project, from bidding to scheduling to progress, to completion - in addition to returning to re-sand/ stain/ finish the steps, and performing additional work (third coat to the floor). It was even fairly smooth in coming up with agreeable terms for both parties - and we did fully accept his proposal on what would make him satisfied. So I am unclear on the "unprofessional" or "difficult" aspect he is referring to in working with us. Our company is committed to quality work, clear professional communication, and customer satisfaction. We stand behind our work and we stand behind our contract, which is designed to fully inform our customers of what to expect during the course of work, and how to best prepare for the work. Making sure our customers are fully informed is important.

They refinished my oak hardwood floors. Price looked good and they seemed to know what they were talking about but the overall experience and quality was unprofessional and disappointing. When they arrived they forgot some of the materials which immediately meant the job took longer to complete. The problem came at the end when they had missed a few spots in some closets and around a couple of corners and wanted to be paid in full before they would come back and finish. I refused and said that I dont usually pay the final bill until all of the work is complete. They threatened to put a lean on my home which seemed odd since all they had to do was stop by and finish the job. When they grudgingly came back I paid on the spot and reminded him that he still needed to finish putting back on the trim which he said he would do as part of the job and he said that he was not going to do it and left the job unfinished. I would highly reccomend not doing business with this company. The floors had some areas with higher shine then others and my floors still look blotchy.

Our company does hardwood flooring installation, sanding, and refinishing work. Our company does not offer mill work or trim work. We do not tell anyone otherwise, and our contract very clearly outlines this as well. Molding and trim work is not part of the hardwood floor. We believe in making sure our customers know what to expect 100% throughout the course of the project, which is why our contract acts as a guideline - and is very clear in addressing base trim, and much more. He had no right or reason to have that expectation. As far as his concerns around corners, yes we addressed his concern and fixed any issues he pointed out. Our contract outlines that we be paid for our labor after the labor is performed, and also protects our customers stating we are obligated to address/ correct any issues or concerns regarding our work, however it does not allow for a customer to not pay or withhold money owed. We worked to make sure the project was completed satisfactorily for our customer. Unfortunately he expected we would do work outside the scope of bid work - in addition to being offended when we required payment after finishing the work we bid to complete. We did address his concerns and corrected them immediately - even after he withheld payment. Unfortunately, according to this, he was obviously still displeased.

I really wanted to get a quote because they seem to really know their trade, but they failed to follow through so many times that I gave up. About two weeks ago I tried to use their web form several times to request a quote; it was broken. The same day, I left a phone message asking for a quote and saying the web form was broken; my call was not returned. A week ago I sent an email requesting a quote, and got a response. Jennifer sent a long email with detailed information about some options and prices, and asking detailed questions about the job so she could try to do a quote via email. Since the job is fairly complex and she hadn't read my email correctly about the work I needed done, I requested an in-person estimate. It took two more days (and another email from me) to get an answer with potential times. The next day I replied that I was available both of the times offered. I never heard back and nobody ever showed up to do a quote. I sent Jennifer an email telling her how disappointed I was with my experience. She apologized, which I appreciate, and said they are a small company and have been unusually busy lately. It showed. I certainly felt like they didn't need or want my business, so I'll be giving it to another company.

I did receive feedback from a member at this address (must be the wife or significant other, as she had been the person communicating with me regarding this property address), and I did sincerely apologize and did my best to explain that we were in fact very busy during that time so I did have a difficult time arranging the free on site visit immediately - and to be clear - we had not confirmed on any particular appt. time to "no show". I did receive her feedback and responded immediately to tell her that I was very sorry we would not have the opportunity to work for her. Obviously our loss is that we did not get the chance to work for her. I cannot however understand her drive to try to deter others from working with us on top of that loss. Regarding our web form - yes I appreciate being made aware that the form was not working (one other gentleman also told me the same thing was happening on our web form at that time). Unfortunately during the short period of time that it was malfunctioning, I did not know. It was due to our comcast email address sending "bounce back" responses through their server. Once I was made aware of the problem, I promptly revised the website so that all of the quote requests are submitted to us through a different email address - one that is working properly. We have been in business for five years, and produce very high quality floors and are proud to offer affordable and competitive rates. We have a great many happy customers and receive many referrals from them. I am sorry and surprised to have to write a response to a complaint from a stranger that we never actually performed any work for whatsoever, nor provided a bid for. I do hope that any potential customer that reads this complaint will still request a quote from us, and give us an opportunity to work for them, and produce a high quality and affordable hardwood floor for them.

The Hardwood Guys were a pleasure to deal with. They were prompt in setting up an appointment to come check out the job, and showed up on-time. They quickly responded with a very professional quote with full disclosures, etc. A week later they delivered the wood, and a week after that the job was finished. It looks fantastic! There was no collateral damage whatsoever (scratched walls, etc.), and the final price was exactly what they quoted with no surprises. To tell the truth, their website is so good that I actually suspected it might just be a front, and that they would sub out the work. But it is truly a family owned business that reflects pride and professionalism in all aspects of their operation.
Description of Work: Purchase, installation and Swedish finish of 507 square feet of Brazilian Cherry flooring on the main floor of my home. They also removed and stacked the existing Pergo flooring, which I am going to re-use in my downstairs apartment.

The bid was made via email. Jennifer gave me extensive info on how they charge for such jobs, I sent here measurements and some photos, by email. 2 other companies bid the job based on and on-site visit. They were significantly lower that the other bids, particularly the stairs and repair work. They came when scheduled, began work immediately. The sanding took two full days, with a crew of 1 to 3. One worker was left alone for the first afternoon, when I stopped by, he was ill from fumes and apologized for it. They had a difficult job with the stairs, it turned out taking about 20 hours alone. By the end of the 2nd day, it was clear that the stairs would not clean up very well, (top nails, deep paint). They put on the two coats of finish, but I wasn't happy with how the finish looked. There was some missed/light areas, some areas looked like washboard, this may have been from sanding, but it has improved with time. They reassured me that with time the flaws resolve over 60-90 days.
Description of Work: They sanded and refinished 700 sq ft plus 13 stairs, both treads and risers. The floors were old fir, never before refinished. They also patched an area (about 6 boards) that had been removed. They applied 2 coats of polyurethane finish. The stairs had been stained very dark or maybe painted. The job included an area around two rows of railing, with square pickets.

Excellent from start to finish. They showed up on time for the estimate, gave a detailed estimate with several options, spelled out each option and how long it would take. Ordered the wood (had to be custom ordered due to it's width). Wood showed up on the date they said it would. All the installed went smoothly, they worked for 9 days straight with no days off to get it all done. Every single worker was courteous and paid attention to every detail. They cleaned up everything everyday, put all the tools away and left it clean all the time. We had them take out a few bad looking boards and they did it with no hassle at all. It was the best experience we had with having work done on our house. I called several other flooring companies, all listed on Angie's list and none of them came close to the price or follow through like The Hardwood Guys did.
Description of Work: Installed 4,200 square feet of solid, 4 inch wide x 3/4 inch Oak flooring. Filled, sanded and applied 2 coats of Swedish finish. Installed 39 Oak stair treads and 37 risers as well as 12 inlaid floor vents. All in 9 days!

We called them about a week before we wanted the work done, and they were able to accommodate our rushed schedule. They were on time, on budget, and we are very happy with the results. They were very knowledgeable, and answered all of our questions. They were more responsive via email, then over the phone.
